Peter Cushing -- The End of the Affair (1955)
Tumblr media
Damnit, he broke my heart towards the end. William finally has (or at least admits) self-awareness that he believes he wasn't a good husband, in his mind, to Sarah. He was suspicious of her fidelity and when confronted that it's true, he decides not to believe it. When he realises that he could lose her, admits his faults ... and the TEARS. OMG. There's a mention that or hint that Sarah is barren and that actually hit hard knowing his wife, Helen, couldn't have children either. I can't handle when this man cries. He just breaks my heart.
He knows he wasn't good enough for her, and that his wife is most likely in love with someone else, but he still loves her.
Sir, you can't do this to me. I like Van Johnson and feel his character's emotion and dilemma, but Peter's character breaks your heart in the end.
Granted, I'm looking at this man and thinking, damn, you have this loving, maybe distracted by his job, husband... I would be rocking his bedroom every night. It's always the quiet ones that are freaks in the sheets.
