Different anon, reading your Delicious in FE asks had me and my partner wondering how you'd cook Mila because of her weird hair wings. So I guess: Mila and Duma? Can't have one without the other.
felt a little under the weather sorry for the late reply!!
i have in fact answers for this.
mila
id imagine tastes a lot like mossy chewy veggies and vermicelli and tofu. she looks almost like what i would think of dryad if less leafy and woody, and is responsible for her people never going hungry ever again (tm). so mila probably touches the ground and an apple tree grows, touches a person wishing they have a pair of mega melons instantly have a pair of mega melons
but bc she technically isnt a dryad and more of a dragon, parts of her are going to taste like meat even though its veggies. which is. cool actually! that means its vegan time!! 🍽️🍽️
i actually have a cooler idea than lab grown meat though: mianjin! or seitan. mila is probably just full of this. dont even have to wash or pound her to get this labor intensive vegan food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so these things are actually gluten, processed from wheat and the likes. their texture is super duper close to chicken, and are extremely good at soaking up whatever juices you throw at it. fry it, steam it, they can take it. monastic buddhist monks have been munching on these things since 6th century in china, and ive even eaten once prepped to look exactly like sashimi
its fucking play dough faux meat.
anyway! so with parts of her being mianjin, her hair part would probably be like long beans or even moss. theres one particular Black Moss that i ate a lot as a kid being served it, but apparently have been over harvested due to. dumb shit culture reasons. (eating it is believed to bring fortune and money. they kept feeding me that shit.)
so! my recommended milla prep method is vegetable stir fry, actually! make sure to grab all the veggies like carrots and brocolli and mushrooms and plenty of oyster sauce, mirin, vinegar, and ginger and go to fucking town mixing her in. :3
Tumblr media
shit so good it can be eaten as finger food >:333
Duma
id imagine duma would be some creature thats really hardy and built to survive in places with lots of prairie and plains. but hes ripped as hell, strong as a tank and has the mentally of strongest means bestest
so. maybe hes like. a bison. the king of bisons. the biggest beefiest gym bro who somehow converts his gains from fats and protein non-existent.
i know the duma we know in fe:echoes is a dippy sad mess but imagine if that was bc he lost his way in the mountains without cell reception bc he made a bad investment, lost his house, drank too much, got into a couple of fights with cars and trains, lost, and mila took off with his $60,000 car he paid off by running some crypto grift and got mega cancelled for it
regular duma is a bona fide bison. the duma we saw is not.
step 1: get his ass. step 2: shred his ass into thin slices. step 3: dry his thin ass and then grab a bunch of berries and then recook his ass in his own fat. BAP BAPABAPABABBABABABP done.
with regards to regular duma, the only way to pay proper respects and follow his path imo is to become one with him so thoroughly even nature shakes upon our footstep as we train in the wild. see what he saw. fend of cars with our bare hands and pecs. eating him. slowly. bit by bit....
because duma has become... the ultimate survival food.
Pemmican. ✌️
combined together they are a force of nature. we shall become as gods. can't go wrong with ultimate survival meat and ultimate veggies

Homecookings [Dec. ed]
Oh look! It’s the end of 2020 already :O
This yr has been a disruptive one for most, so I’m hoping 2021 will be better *fingers crossed* December was a bad month, overall, for me. I wasn’t stressed but I think I suffered a minor PTSD in regards to a student. It was more frustrating/annoying, if anything. As a lead student person in the department, I have seen a lot of students but this one was special. .. There are so many things that I don’t understand about ppl, in general, in addition to why some regulations are in place. (lol makes me sound like a rebel, but I’m not)
... At the end of the day, my expectations are high. That’s all. :D
Alrighty, my December homecookings & things~
Tumblr media
CURRY! I love this brand of ‘instant curry’!! You guys should all try this. There are several types/levels of spicy. This medium one was mild to me, but there is a mild one that’s like. .. very, very mild.
Tumblr media
The package looks like this inside. Several options to heat it up... you can put the silver pack in a pot of boiling water; you can pour out on top of your rice or whatever & heat up (in microwave/oven), or what I like to do is actually squeeze out contents & cook.
Tumblr media
I made curry chicken over rice; topped with chili flakes & furikake.
Tumblr media
I like this green grape candy. That’s all. Can be purchases from Hmart~ haha I saw this for the 1st time back in 2014, when I was traveling in Korea. It was just. .. casually in a convenience store. Now we have it here!!! Only took like 5 yrs. .. -.-’
Tumblr media
Remember I told you one of my staple lunches/dinners for work is pasta? Well, sometime earlier in the month, I had a little bit of the rosee sauce left (wasn’t enough) so I looked in the fridge to see what else I can add.... I settled on cheddar cheese lol turned out great!
Tumblr media
Singapore laksa paste by Asian Home Gourmet~
Tumblr media
I added about 2/3 of the pack in; diluted with water, of course. Holyyyyy it was spicy! But it was very delicious!
Tumblr media
Doesn’t look great. .. this kimchi jjigae but I needed this, I really did.... haha
Tumblr media
So satisfying~ I added kabocha squash to it so it was a little sweeter than usual.
Tumblr media
Banana Chocopie topped with condensed milk. Who could resist? Everything tastes better with condensed milk!
Tumblr media
Seafood pancake + kimchi pancake to go with my chestnut makgeolli.
Tumblr media
This was interesting!! My brother dropped off some mini soft taco shells for me & this was what I did with them. I put in some cream of mushroom soup & Swiss cheese, then microwaved them till it become one homogenous mixture. & then I put them into my toaster oven so I could ‘brown’ the cheese. The cheese-containing filling didn’t turn brown but the taco shells started browning lol fail! But it was good!
Tumblr media
Following the success of the cream of mushroom soup + Swiss cheese combo.... I applied that to penne pasta!
Tumblr media
I drizzled some of the olive oil on top for a ‘smoky taste’. YUM!
Tumblr media
Chicken thigh with Korean rice syrup + gochujang. I normally do a saucier version of this, which also contains soy sauce, but I decided to make a grill-like chicken thigh dish so the rice syrup + gochujang is more like a glaze than a sauce. Turned out well!
Tumblr media
There was an evening where dinner was delayed, & so I ended up cooking a quick rice noodle dish for myself. This was thin rice vermicelli with oyster sauce-cooked tofu + a braised Chinese mushroom condiment + soup scallops. (The broth was chicken broth my mom had made with the Instant Pot so I just poured that over top.) So yes, this was a vegetarian dish haha which is unusual but it was getting kinda late for dinner so. .. less is more :P
Tumblr media
Spaghetti with rosee sauce (+ tomato + beef)
Tumblr media
Onion + herb seasoning chicken with carrot & onions~ Chicken is my family’s favourite protein & we have a LOT of it. Well, for me, it’s a lot haha our freezer is mostly chicken....... need more ways to make it. Suggestions, pls!
Tumblr media
Guksu noodles with Korean seaweed soup (miyeok-guk), & chicken & napa cabbage. I felt fancy so I added seaweed snack to it.
A year-end wrap-up post is coming. Pls come back soon!

Sanmao’s “Stories of the Sahara”, 《撒哈拉的故事》, 沙漠中的饭店 Restaurant in the desert, Tâm Anh translated.
My husband, very unfortunately is a foreigner. Using words like these to mention own husband, I sound apparently anti-foreigner, however apparently language and customs of countries have big differences; because of these, our marriage life indeed also has a great deal of unbridgeable gaps.
At beginning when making decision to marry Jose, I clearly told him, we are not only from different countries, personalities are also different, if married in the future may quarrel, even fight. He replied: “I know your personality is not good, yet overall is a very kind person, quarrels or fights may occur, however we still need to get married.” Then, we after 7 years acquaintance, finally got married.
I am not a feminist, however I will never accept after marriage losing independent personality and spiritual freedom; therefore I again and again emphasized to Jose, after marriage I would still “do my own way”, otherwise we would not get married. To this, Jose said to me: “I indeed want you to ‘do your own way’, losing your personality and way of doing, then why I get married to you then!” Good! Words of great men, I was really relieved. Becoming wife of Jose, on language matters I surrendered to him. This poor foreigner, “人”[ meaning person ] and “入”[ meaning enter ] these two different Chinese characters I taught him how many times he still could not differentiate, I had no way but to speak his language, this matter I let it his way then. (However, in the future once having children, no matter what, children still have to learn Chinese, to this point he agreed. )
No fiddle-faddle, now be a wife, the first thing is right on doing kitchen. I have always hated housework, but in cooking I am nonetheless very interested, how many onions, how much meat, once cooked become a dish, I very much enjoy this kind of art.
My Mum in Taiwan, knowing I after getting married to Jose, because of his job, had to move to isolated wild Africa, was exceedingly heart-ached. However, because our little family income is all on Jose’s paycheck, I had no choice but to follow his job requirement, there was no leeway. After we got married and I started kitchen work, our family meals were all western dishes. Then air-packaged aid sent from home in Taiwan arrived, I received a great pile of vermicelli, sea-weeds, mushrooms, dried instant noodles, dried fried pork, all kinds of valuable ingredients, I was so glad, to add on female friends in Europe also sent canned soy sauce, my family-based “Chinese restaurant” is at no delay open, unfortunately customers there is only one who does not pay. (Later on, coming to our “restaurant”, there is, however, a long queue then! )
To be true, with ingredients Mum sent to us, to open a “Chinese restaurant”, it is not sufficient, but fortunately Jose has never been to Taiwan, he looked on to this vigorously established “big kitchen” of mine, also started to have confidence in my cooking.
The first course I made was “Vermicelli with chicken soup”.
Jose comes home from work always high voice yelling: “Meal be quickly ready please, I am hungry to death now!” In love with him for so many years, now every time coming home knowing just to yell meal be ready, not even a look on this wife, no worry this “yellow faced old wife” role [*translator's note: 黄脸婆 “Yellow faced old wife”phrase is used to describe a woman who has married for a long time. The (face) color indicates that she has aged with the burden of housework. Someone says, in ancient China, to cover the aging face, women misuse the cosmetics with lead and make their face getting yellow. The elder, more yellow. It's a negative term. Husbands use this term to describe their wife as love is fading out. Wives complain the houseworks and the relationship by calling themselves as "黄脸婆"] I do so well. The first course I made Vermicelli with chicken soup, he tasted a little of the soup then asked: “Yí, what’s this? Chinese spaghetti?”
“Your mother-in-law from thousands of miles away sent you spaghetti? Not spaghetti.”
“What is that then? I want more, very delicious.”
I used chopsticks to pick up a thread of vermicelli saying: “This is, called ‘Rain’.”
   “Rain?” He was puzzled.
Above I already said, I am a free-spirited married woman, words naturally come according to my state on a whim, “This, is springtime the very first rain, falling on mountain top, be frozen one by one, wombed and brewed well on the mountain then be brought down to mountain foot bundle by bundle, be sold with rice wine for drink, not easy to buy ah!”
Jose was still puzzled, looked at me, then looked to study “rain” in the bowl, then he said: “You are making fool of me?”
I did not remark on this. “You want more or not?”
He replied: “You are the Queen of boast, I want more.” From then on, he often ate “spring rain”, till today still does not know what it is made from. Sometimes I think Jose is so unsmart, because of this feel a little disappointed.
The second time we ate vermicelli was when I made Sichuan dish “ants climbing a tree”, that is vermicelli put in the pot stirred-fried, then sprinkled with minced pork and sauce.
Jose came home from work was always hungry; he chewed a mouthful of vermicelli then, “What is this? Looks like white woolen yarn, also looks like plastic thread?”
“Both are not right, it is a kind of nylon fishing line you know, Chinese people has processed it to make it white and smooth.” I replied.
He again ate a mouthful of it, then smiled, saying: “Really, so many weird names, if we indeed open a restaurant, this dish can make big money, darling!” That day he ate a lot of nylon processed white lines.
The third time we ate vermicelli was when I made Chinese north-eastern region traditional “Chive pocket cake”, which is in fact fried pie, inside filled with vermicelli, spinach, and minced meat.
He said: “This little cake, inside you put sand-fish wings, right? I heard this kind of thing is very expensive, no wonder you put just a little.” I fell in big laughter. “Later this very expensive sand-fish wing, we should ask Mum not to buy, I should send her thank-you letter.”
I replied to him in big laughter: “Quick, you go write to her, I will translate your letter, haha!”
There was one day he came home from work early, I took the chance he forgot having seen Chinese pork jerky (Bak Kwa), quickly hid the pork jerky away, and then took it out using scissors to cut into square pieces, put these into a pot, then hid the pot in the blanket. Right that day he had a blocked nose, when going to sleep he needed the woolen blanket, I in a moment forgot this hidden precious pot of mine, was lying at one side, feeling at ease reading Chapter 1000 of the “Water Margin” a Chinese classic novel.
He was lying on bed, in hands was the pot, he looked then looked to study it, I raised my head, so bad, he found out this“King Solomon’s treasure”of mine, I quickly grasped the pot from his hands, saying: “This is not for you to eat, is medicine, is Chinese medicine.”
“My nose is blocked, right on I should take Chinese medicine.” He put a handful of it to his mouth, I was tempered, but could not ask him to spit out, just had to stop voice. “So sweet, what is this?”
I unhappily replied to him: “Throat lozenge, to give coughing person to smooth the throat.”
“Throat lozenge made from meat? I am fooled?”
The following day waking up, I found he had taken a big half of the pot to give away to colleagues; from that day on, whenever his colleagues saw me, all of them then pretended to cough so to cheat for my Chinese “medicine” pork jerky, not exclusively non-eating-pork Muslim ones do. (Later on I did not give these to our Muslim friends, otherwise that would be lack of moral respect.)
Anyway husband and wife marriage life is always around eating, other time busy is with earning money for eating, was indeed not very interesting. One day I made rice rolls, which is Japanese sushi, using sea-weeds to wrap rice, inside I also added on some pork floss.
Jose this time rejected to eat. “What, you give me to eat printed blue paper, carbon paper?”
I slowly asked him, “You really do not want to eat?”
 “Not eat, not eat.”
Good, I overjoyed, ate a great pile of sushi.
“Open your mouth, let me see?”, he commanded.
“See, there is no blue colour, I used the reversed face of the carbon paper, it could not dye on my mouth.” Anyway often bluffing, I often in that way to make fun.
"You are the Queen of boast, true then untrue, really hateful, to tell the truth, what is it?”
“You totally do not know China, I am quite disappointed about my husband.” I replied to him, again ate my sushi.
He was tempered, use chopstick clipped then clipped one, on the face full of tragically determined expression like a hero heading to battle field, chewed for quite a while, then spitted out, “It is, is sea-weed.”
I jumped up in delight: “Yes, yes, you are so smart!” Was again about to jump, got from him a pat on the head.
Chinese stuffs we then have quickly eaten up, my “Chinese restaurant” also could not make out any more dishes, Western dishes were again back on table. Jose came home from work, surprisingly seeing I was making beef steak, very unexpectedly, but happily, he called: “Half a life already. Also have french-fries? “So I got him eat beef steak for three days, then he seemed to lose appetite, a small bite not eat.
“Is it that you are tired by work? Do you want to go to sleep for a while then again up to eat?”  This “yellow faced old hateful wife” is sometimes tender.
“Not ill, it is that I do not eat well.”
Hearing this I jumped up. “Do not eat well? Do not eat well? Do you know how expensive is beef steak?”
“Not that, wife, I want to eat ‘rain’, still the dishes sent from your mum are the best.”
"All right, Chinese restaurant will be open twice per week, how do you think? You want how often the ‘rain’ to fall?"
One day Jose came back home saying to me: “Well done, today my big boss asked me to come.”
“To give you a pay rise?” My eyes were lighted.
    “No”
I grasped him, scratched on his skin. “No? You are fired? My God, we…”
“Don’t grasp me, you are so nervous, you please listen, my big boss said, in our company everyone has been invited to our home for meal, only him and his wife were not invited, he was awaiting you to invite him to have Chinese cuisine.”
“Your big boss wants me to prepare dishes? Not do, not do, not invite him, inviting your colleagues I am happy to, inviting boss it is unavoidably awkward, person like me, again need to talk a bit in formal way, you know, I…” I still wanted to loudly tell him about Chinese so-called spirit, again could not explain clearly, again seeing Jose’s facial expression, this ‘spirit’ word is better kept not spelt out!
The following day he asked me, “Hey, do we have bamboo shoots?”
“We have these so many chopsticks, aren’t they bamboo shoots?”
He gazed at me. “My big boss said he wants to eat bamboo shoots slices stirred with mushroom.” Darling, this big boss is really one who has seen the world, could not underestimate him a foreigner.
“Good, tomorrow evening please invite him and wife to dinner, no problem, he wants bamboo shoots bamboo can be grown.”
Jose affectionately looked at me, since our marriage this was the first time he looked at me like a lover such a way, this made me quite flattered, only that day my hair was messy, make-up was terribly like a ghost.
The following evening, I firstly made well three courses, also kept slow fire, arranged table with candles, covered table with white colour table-cloth, added on a red table-runner, everything was extra-ordinarily gorgeous. That meal both the guests and hosts were very delighted, not only the dishes were delicious in all aspects colour, smell and taste, I this wife and host also had make-up neatly, was even wearing long dress.
After the meal, Jose’s boss and wife when leaving for home, still especially said to me: “If in the future our Public Affairs Department has vacancy, hope that you can come to work with us, be a part of our company.” My eyes were lighted. This all thanks to the “Bamboo shoots slices stirred with mushroom”.
Sending off the boss, it was already late at night, I quickly changed from long dress to jeans, hair tied up with rubber band, did the dish-washing, back to my Cinderella nature. Jose was very happy, asked me from behind, “Hey, this bamboo shoots slices stirred with mushroom was really delicious, where did you find bamboo shoots?”
I did not stop washing dishes, asked him: “Which bamboo shoots?”
“The bamboo shoots we had this evening!”
I burst into laughter: “Oh, you are saying that cucumber stirred with mushroom?”
“What, you, you, you fool me that's fine, even dare to fool my boss?”
“I did not fool him, this was his whole life the best one time eating delicate bamboo shoots slices stirred with mushroom, this remark was he himself made.”
Jose held me in his arms, dish washing soap and water all shed on his beard, he said: “Long live, long live, you are that smart monkey, that monkey king who has 72 magical tricks, called… called… what is his name then…”
I patted on his head, “called Monkey King The Great, Sun Wu Kong (*translator's note: Monkey King Sun Wu Kong is a protagonist in Chinese classic novel Journey To The West authored by Wu Cheng'en, is by legend a very smart monkey transformed from a special stone after thousands of years, who has learnt to marvel 72 magical tricks, entitled Monkey King then later on named as Sun Wu Kong who then helped to escort Táng dynasty Táng Xuan Zhuang master monk overcoming numerous challenges on a long journey from China to the west, successfully obtained Buhdism valuable books from Buhdism cradle India transferred to China, then popularised Buhdism religion in China.) This time you could not again forget then.”

Dylan drove over to me last night and we went to sonic, ate some Sonic blasts, shared music & showed some funny Facebook videos while in the parking lot of fitness 19, drove back home and lied down in his car with the moon roof open and continued listening to music and talked some more. Then we gave eachother some amazing kisses while listening to 80s music (who knew that would be such a vibe? 😂) to last until the next time we see eachother. We also took a shower together 😩 2 things... choking and going down 🤭 the best lol also the way he looks once he’s out of the shower with his hair wet and all... 😍 he’s so perfect. Not just because of his body but it all just ties in together. Then we went to eat at Panda Express on base and then drove to Sears at the Shoppes! Had some Haagen Dazs and went to game stop then Barnes and Noble!!! Great way to end the night for me :) today was such a great day. I love hanging out with him and his presence!!! ❤️
Date #13 ❤️ 12/04/19 ~ 6pm-9:15pm
Met up with Dylan at target to get a couple things and then he bought eggnog and I bought sugar cookie milk! It was so good. LOL. And then we went to eat dinner at Pho Ha along Douglas :) I’m glad he liked his Thai tea with boba and his vermicelli noodles with chicken! after we went to Verizon for a bit and then just talked for the rest of the night in my car before having to pick up mama from work ☺️ I love talking and hanging out with him.
Date #14 ❤️ 12/09/19 ~ 4pm to 9:30pm
Mama and I met up with Dylan at Texas Roadhouse and we had a yummy dinner! And then after that Dylan drove us to the BMW dealership in Vista to check out some cars. Him and mama were talking and and it made me so happy! I also got to hug him and hold his hand. He gave me his jacket because I was cold too 😭 then we went go kart racing at K1 speed! It was sooo fun me and Dylan have to go back. 😂 before we left we hung out on the chairs and just talked and laughed and took a bunch of photos. ❤️
Date #15 ❤️ 12/13/19 ~ 5:30pm to 9pm
Met up with Dylan and Camden at Ralphs to get their apartment key copied! And then we had a nice dinner over at Chin’s Chinese food. Camden kept wanting to sit to me but ultimately ended up sitting next to his dad. LOL. He was a bit rowdy today tbh but it’s all good haha. Got some lo mein, sweet and sour chicken and chop suey! Then we went back to their place, relaxed for a second, and then his ex called to let him know that she’s gonna be picking up some stuff at the apartment, so we drove around and looked at some Christmas lights and Dylan got a vanilla milkshake from McDonalds! LOL. He drove me back and I left right away to avoid any confrontation eek.
Date #16 ❤️ 12/15/19 ~ 12:45pm to 7:30pm
So I went to church at 11 at St. Margaret and then met up with Dylan and Camden at Barnes and Noble. I loveeeed this time! He got some stickers and then we showed Camden some truck and dinosaur books and he kept showing me these books that have those sound buttons and Paw Patrol. Camden is so fun to be around! He wanted so many things and Dylan was just like “just wait till Christmas” lol. After Barnes we went to eat at Golden Corral and Camden decided to sit next to me again haha. I talked to him a lot and fed him brussel sprouts. Afterwards walking back to the car, he held my hand! I cry. We made our way to the park and let Camden play for about an hour? Weather was beautiful and Dylan and I played too! Dylan was apparently the monster haha. We headed back to the apartment afterwards and we cuddled on the couch and played with Camden and then it got to that kind of moment so we head to the room and yup... dude I had my monthly visitor too, it was wild. But it was 10/10 as always ahhhhhhh. No words. It was amazing. LOL. I then had to go because his ex was coming back at 10 supposedly. :)
Date #17 ❤️ - 12/21/19 from 12:45pm to 3:30pm
So met up with Dylan after my run in Carlsbad (5 miles actually LOL) and then afterwards I drove him and I to get some food because we haven’t eaten! We went to the same That Boy Good barbecue place along Coast Highway and got the same thing haha. I got the brisket with mac and cheese and his was brisket with fries! He was so handsome today. I couldn’t help but hold his arm while walking! Then we drove back to where he parked over in Carlsbad and then talked in the car for a bit, exchanged a few kisses, and then had to go!
Date #18 ❤️ - 12/22/19 from 12:30pm to 10:00pm
Mama and I met up with Dylan at the mall and we kidnapped him! LOL. I drove us all the way to South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa and there we walked around a lot! We got free hot chocolate while doing so, and then went to Ruby’s Diner for a quick lunch. He got this butterfinger milkshake and when we took a sip we could feel our arteries clog omg. Afterwards we walked some more and this entire time I was holding his arm and hand and at times he would have his arm around me too! There was a part where mama was taking our photo and he “sniffed” me LOL but in the photo it looked sweet so I’ll take it. He also gave me a bunch of forehead kisses and hugs :,) After walking around, we decided to move on to Mission Inn!! We walked around and looked at the lights. We bought this suuuper good hot chocolate with a gingerbread man on top. He gave me a kiss with whipped cream on his lips and it was literally... sweet. LOL. Dinner was at The Old Spaghetti Factory! We waited together outside and I held his hand and he gave me a bunch of kisses!! When we were inside he ordered me a Long Island drink but sadly he got heartburn from drinking it afterwards :( I felt so bad huhu. But he ended up being okay. I gotta bring TUMS in my bag now honestly lol. Then we walked back to the car and drove home. Today was amazing and Dylan is honestly the sweetest. Every stare, every wink, every hand hold, every hug, every forehead kiss, every arm hold, I feel something in my heart for him. I like him... a lot.
Date #19 ❤️ - 12/28/19 from 12pm to 11pm
So I met up with Dylan at the park and little did I know he actually bought me flowers and chocolates!!! It was so sweet of him. He told me beforehand that he was gonna stop at the store real quick lol. After that we went to his barracks to put the flowers inside and yup we took a little detour from plans ;) which was freaking amazing!!!! as always!!! he showed me his money collection box too!! and then headed out after an hour or so. We decided to get some Raising Canes over in Vista before heading to San Diego. Afterwards, we headed towards Petco Park and parked in the structure, walked over to where the scooters were and went around!!! I don’t remember exactly where we went but we went pretty dang far, 6 miles of scootering. LOL. Thankfully found a really nice hill (I think it was called Bankers Hill) to catch the sunset and snap a few photos. He then took me to the Altitude Sky Lounge in the Marriott Hotel!!! The view was gorgeous and we bought some drinks. Electric screwdriver I believe. His was hella strong, mine was too but more fruity. Haha. We stayed up there for about an hour and talked by the fire. I was honestly just admiring him here. I experience time flying by and slowing down with him at the same time. Afterwards we headed to Old Town SD where I took him to Cafe Coyote, he got a Cali Burrito with queso on top and I had carne asada tacos. Both of us got horchatas too. We then decided to head back to Camp Pendleton because it was super cold and we couldnt walk anymore. I cuddled with him at the barracks for a while which turned into...yup. LOL. 12/10. oh gah. I asked Dylan what he liked about me while facing him under the blankets, and he told me the most heartwarming answer that actually made me cry and he held me the whole time. I really felt it. I then headed home. I’m missing a lot of little details from today such as the kisses in between, the hand holds, arm holds, little looks of being adored... but this is one of the best days I’ve had with him and I can’t wait to have more days like this... with him. Oh, it was also our 4 month anniversary of talking to eachother... <333

The Koreatown Takeout & Delivery Guide added to Google Docs
The Koreatown Takeout & Delivery Guide
When it comes to sheer volume of dining options, there isn’t a more restaurant-rich neighborhood in LA than Koreatown. And now, most of those spots have transformed into full-scale takeout and delivery operations. From soup specialists to big-plate BBQ spots to decades-old institutions doing delivery for the first time ever, here are 38 great Ktown spots you can order from today.
Featured In The LA Socially Distant Summer Guide Everything you need to enjoy some semblance of summer. the spots  Jakob Layman Myung Dong Kyoja (명동교자) $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3630 Wilshire Blvd
There is no shortage of incredible cold noodle soups to be found in LA, but the ones served at Myung Dong Kyoja continue to be some of our favorite in town. And right now, this Korean soup specialist is running an efficient curbside pick-up system that gets you in and out in a matter of seconds. Plus, they’ve even reserved a special parking spot for those doing pick-up - a true gift if you know how bad parking can get in the area. The spicy cold noodles are a must. Both takeout and delivery are available.
 Jakob Layman Sun Nong Dan $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3470 W 6th St Ste 7
Home to one of LA’s most iconic dishes (galbi jjim), Sun Nong Dan is available for takeout and delivery on most major platforms until 11:30pm every single night. At $84, the galbi jjim might seem a bit on the expensive side, but just know that this giant helping of spicy short ribs, rice cakes, and vegetables can easily feed four adults. The chadol sulung tang (oxtail soup with brisket) should also be on your order.
 Sushi One $ $ $ $ Sushi  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3905 W 6th St
One of the most underrated sushi spots in LA, Sushi One has transitioned to a takeout and delivery menu filled with affordable bento boxes and roll combinations, but it’s the ten-piece sushi platter for $17 that deserves your full attention.
The Corner Place The Corner Place $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 2819 James M Wood Blvd
The Corner Place has been serving the people of Ktown since 1982 (a.k.a. The year Sophia Bush was born), and they owe a lot of their longevity to their excellent dong chi mi gook soo, a cold noodle soup served with vermicelli-like noodles in a clear broth. It’s slightly tangy, refreshing, and, for literally the first time ever, it’s actually available to-go. Seriously, this is huge. Take full advantage. Available for takeout through The Corner Place’s website, the rest of the menu is available for delivery through most apps.
 Ddong Ggo $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 528 S Western Ave
When we close our eyes at night, we dream of the day we can return to Ddong Ggo’s iconic patio, filled with soju bottles and chain-smoking college kids. Until that happens, we’ll happily do takeout and delivery. The large menu is full of excellent Korean bar food, but we tend to go for the kimchi seafood pancake and honey fried chicken.
 Magal BBQ $ $ $ $ Korean ,  BBQ  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3460 W 8th St
Yes, Magal’s takeout and delivery menu is a fairly paired-down version of their regular one, but it still has plenty of highlights on it. The braised short ribs (they come cooked) are a standout, and though its $60 price tag stings a bit, just know that you’re getting a ton of food. They also have some very tasty stews and gimbaps. Available for both takeout and delivery.
Mister Bossam $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 338 S Western Ave
An ordinary-looking spot on Western serving truly unique food, Mister Bossam specializes in grilled pork ribs with cheese. This is by no means light food, but the steamed egg and corn on the side helps balance out the heaviness of the dish. At $44, it will easily feed two adults. Available for both takeout and delivery.
 Jakob Layman Myung In Dumplings $ $ $ $ Korean $$$$ 3109 W Olympic Blvd
Three words: Gigantic. Steamed. Dumplings. Approximately the size of a softball, the pork and kimchi dumplings at Myung In are not here to play games. Each order comes with four pieces of the massive mandu (our new Twitter name?), which is the perfect amount for a quick, easy lunch. Or a long one. Even though you’re working from home, you should still take a proper lunch break, you know. Available for takeout and delivery.
 Krystal Thompson Jeong Yuk Jeom $ $ $ $ Korean ,  BBQ  in  Koreatown $$$$ 621 S Western Ave Ste 100
Arby’s better watch their backs, because when it comes to the meats, Jeong Yuk Jeom has definitely got them. From prime-grade short ribs to dry-aged beef, the red meat selection here is almost unmatched - and it’s all available for takeout. Call (213) 384-2244 to order.
 Jinsol Gukbap Jinsol Gukbap $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 4253 W 3rd St
Let’s make one thing absolutely clear: If you’re ordering from Jinsol, you should be ordering the gukbap. It’s a specialty dish that begins with a clear, mostly unseasoned pork broth, then is filled with a variety of sides, like kimchi, salted shrimp, and thinly sliced pork belly. It’s kind of like a choose your own adventure game, but like, a million times more delicious. Available for takeout and delivery.
 Kang Ho Dong Baek Jeong $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3465 W 6th St
Pre-pandemic, the lines here weren’t just long - they were borderline sadistic. We’re talking two hours, minimum. Drunk college students everywhere. And if you came with a group of four, you could guarantee that at least one of you was going to wind up with a parking ticket. So… yeah, we’re taking advantage of this unprecedented time and ordering their massive meat and pork combos to-go. Sue us. Available for takeout and delivery.
 Master Ha Master Ha $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 1147 S Western Ave
The raw crab combo at Master Ha is a truly unique dish, with marinated raw crab served over rice, plus a raw quail egg. You’ll mix it all up, wrap it in nori with some pickled vegetables, and end up with what is basically a really great crab hand roll. You should also go for the sul lung tang, a dense, rich soup made from oxtail bones that’s great for cooler days - and hangovers. Available for both takeout and delivery.
Jakob Layman Chef Kang Sul Box $$$$ 3881 Wilshire Blvd.
They opened just before quarantine began, so Chef Kang Sul Box is still a new name to some people in Koreatown, but this spot is absolutely still worth checking out. The fried chicken wings are excellent (it’s the same recipe from the original restaurant, Chef Kang Food Rehab), but we haven’t had a bad thing yet on the menu. The Spam and tofu-filled army stew is a standout. Available for takeout and delivery.
Sun Ha Jang $ $ $ $ Korean ,  BBQ  in  Koreatown $$$$ 4032 W Olympic Blvd
Sun Ha Jang only has two dishes on their takeout menu (a roast duck plate and duck fried rice) and both of them need to be ordered. The duck is pan roasted and comes with purple rice, pickled vegetables, kimchi, and house salad. The fried rice is cooked in the actual duck fat and is one of our favorite versions in town. Both are $16. Call (323) 634-9292 for takeout.
 Quarters Quarters Korean BBQ $$$$ 3465 W 6th St # C-130
The popular BBQ spot is offering a large takeout and delivery menu filled with Korean tapas, spicy stews, and big platters of meat. You can order everything by cut, but make it easier on yourself and do one of the big combination platters instead.
 Kobawoo House Kobawoo House $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 698 S Vermont Ave
This Koreatown staple is an all-around excellent restaurant, but the name of the game here will always be bossam. The massive plate of boiled pork belly is our favorite version in town, and at $38 (for the medium size), it’s a steal - considering it’s still enough for 2-3 meals. If you don’t feel like going big, there are lunch specials with smaller portions. Available for takeout and delivery.
 Jakob Layman Guelaguetza $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3014 W. Olympic Blvd.
Guelaguetza is an LA institution and home to some of the best Oaxacan food in the city. While a meal from here can go a number of different directions, ordering the Festival de Moles - four different moles served with shredded chicken - is non-negotiable, and the same goes for the queso fundido. They’re available for takeout and delivery on most major platforms.
 Jakob Layman Beverly Soon Tofu $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 2717 W Olympic Blvd Ste 108
Open since 1986, Beverly Soon is one of the most popular and well-known restaurants in Koreatown. As the name suggests, it’s all about the soon tofu (bubbling, tofu-filled stew) here, but don’t skip the stone plate bibimbap either - it’s equally as good. Order takeout here. Oh, and all booze is 50% off at the moment. Do with that information what you will.
 Soowon Soowon Galbi $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 856 S Vermont Ave
Back in the good old days (March), Soowon Galbi was what you would call a “Hannah Montana.” With its short wait times, lively atmosphere, and menu of high-quality meats, to eat a meal there was, simply put, to enjoy the best of both worlds. But just because their dining room looks a little different now, that doesn’t mean Soowon is any less of a rockstar - they now have outdoor seating, and you can order their entire menu for takeout and delivery.
 Jakob Layman Pollo A La Brasa $ $ $ $ Peruvian  in  Koreatown $$$$ 764 S Western Ave
If you’re in the mood for Peruvian chicken, there’s no better choice than Pollo a la Brasa. Because damn, does this place know how to roast a bird. Salty, juicy, and crispy, each piece of chicken tastes like it could be the poster child for rotisseries around the world. Plus, a quarter bird served with fries and a salad only costs $7.99. What’s not clicking here? Call (213) 387-1531 to order.
 Chosun Galbee $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3330 W Olympic Blvd
With their high-quality meat selection and upscale dining room, Chosun Galbee definitely falls on the pricier side of the KBBQ spectrum. But unlike the time you paid for express shipping then realized the address was wrong (five days later), the food here is actually worth the extra money. Stick with the classics, and get the Chosun Galbee prime ribs. Available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 734-3330 to order.
Ham Ji Park $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3407 W 6th St
Unlike other BBQ spots in Koreatown, the two best things on the menu at Ham Ji Park are prepared in the kitchen: The pork ribs and the pork neck stew. That might seem like a lot of pork for one order, but the sweet and spiciness of the ribs complement the fragrant stew perfectly. Portion sizes are borderline insane, so plan for plenty of leftovers and plenty of fights with your roommates when they try to steal some. Call (213) 365-8773 for takeout, or click here for delivery.
Yu Chun Chic Naeng Myun $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3185 W Olympic Blvd
While some turn to ice cream, and others, to removing their clothes (@Nelly) whenever it gets too hot outside, we head to Yu Chun. Why? Their naengmyun. This tiny restaurant on Olympic serves some of the best in town - think giant bowls of thin, handmade noodles, steeped in an ice-cold vinegar broth, then served with boiled beef and radishes. You can also add a dash of hot mustard, if you need a bit of heat… Or you could just put your shirt back on, @Nelly? Available for takeout and delivery.
 Parks BBQ $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 955 S Vermont Ave
Home to our favorite meat in the neighborhood, Parks BBQ is a Koreatown institution and has transitioned fairly seamlessly to takeout and delivery. The new menu includes different soups and stews, bibimbap, and of course, big plates of meat. The galbi, marinated in Parks’ house sauce, is a must, but you frankly can’t go wrong with anything that catches your eye.
 Tokyo Hamburg $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Bar Food  in  Koreatown $$$$ 600 S New Hampshire Ave.
Though we miss grilling our own patties right at the table, we’ll still happily order takeout from Tokyo Hamburg, because the burgers (they come fully cooked) are simply that good. Throw in a few other delicious Japanese bar snacks, like okonomiyaki and curry udon, and you have an ideal Friday night meal on your hands. Takeout and delivery are available on most major platforms.
OB Bear $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3002 W 7th St
Who knows when bars will be allowed to reopen (we presume it’ll be whenever Eric Garcetti “feels like it”), but in the meantime, we’ve got the next best thing: Takeout from OB Bear. From crispy fried chicken to seafood pancakes bigger than your head, their bar foods are some of the best in the neighborhood. And don’t worry - if you’re really missing a night out, just order a couple of these and blast some sort of sport, and you’ll be back. Available for takeout and delivery.
 Soban Soban $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 4001 W Olympic Blvd
Soban is one of Koreatown’s best all-around restaurants, but when it comes to main courses, the slow-braised black cod and the simple, pleasantly salty short rib galbi jjim stew should be your two priorities. Also, order a few extra sides of banchan, Soban makes some of the best. Available for takeout through their website, delivery via most apps.
 Jakob Layman Dong Il Jang $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3455 W 8th St
Although dine-in service at this old-school Korean steakhouse has been put on pause, you can still get all of their excellent red meats to-go, like marinated short ribs and marbled wagyu ribeye. Sure, it’s a bit of a bummer that you won’t have their staff of expert servers to flip the meat for you, but like the saying goes - flip the brisket for a man, you feed him for a day, Teach a man to - you get it. Available for takeout and delivery.
 Cassell's Hamburgers $ $ $ $ American ,  Burgers  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3600 W 6th St
Though we miss experiencing the retro Americana vibes of their iconic space inside Hotel Normandie, ordering Cassell’s for takeout and delivery is nearly as good. The classic cheeseburger with bacon is a must, but the patty melt might just be the best thing on the menu. Don’t forget a slice of pie and a to-go cocktail, either.
 Wako Donkasy Wako Donkasu $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3377 Wilshire Blvd #112
Wako Donkasu has two locations, but one specialty: A Korean take on Japanese tonkatsu. That means you’ll find breaded cutlets (there are a few options, but the pork is the best), served with shredded cabbage salad, miso soup, rice, and a tangy sauce. Call (213) 381-9256 for takeout from their Wilshire location, or click here for delivery.
 Jeon Ju $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 2716 W Olympic Blvd
Jeon Ju has a large menu full of excellent soups and bibimbap, but the star of the show will always be the galbi dolsot bibimbap. This massive dish comes filled with galbi (short ribs), eight different vegetables, and a fried egg on top. If you want to kick the heat up a bit, be sure to get some gochujang on the side. Considering it also comes with soup and five different plates of banchan, its $18 price point is one of the best deals in the neighborhood. Available for both takeout and delivery.
 Michin Dak Michin Dak $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3324 W 6th St
There aren’t many frills at this fried chicken shack (it’s literally located in a parking lot across from a Chevron), but you don’t need them. Michin Dak is serving some the hottest, crispiest, and spiciest Korean chicken in town. All you need to do is choose between wings, tenders, or gang jung (a.k.a. Korean popcorn chicken), then determine your spice level. And be careful - there’s a “blood, sweat, and tears” option that’s not to be underestimated. Available for takeout and delivery.
Young King Restaurant $ $ $ $ Chinese ,  Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3100 W Olympic Blvd
Young King serves fantastic Korean-Chinese food, and there are a couple of classics here that deserve your attention: the cha chiang mein (noodles in caramelized black bean sauce) and the tangsuyuk (crispy fried pork with sweet and sour sauce on the side). Available for takeout and delivery or you can call them directly at (213) 487-6154.
 Hangari Kalguksu Hangari Bajirak Kalguksoo $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3470 W 6th St
Located in the same strip mall as Sun Nong Dan (and the 7-Eleven on 6th St. that’s saved your life no less than a dozen times), Hangari Bajirak is a Korean soup spot that specializes in kalguksu, or knife-cut noodles. There’s a few broths to choose from, but we always go for the spicy seafood - loaded with shrimp, crab, mussel, clams, zucchini, kabocha, green onions, and the aforementioned noodles. There’s no better way to decompress after a long day of staring at your computer and pretending to be active on Slack. Available for takeout, delivery, and limited outdoor dining.
 Chunju Han-il Kwan Chunju Han-il Kwan (전주한일관) (Chunju Han-il Kwan) $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3450 W 6th St
There’s a lot of budae jjigae in this town, but our favorite can be found at Chunju Han Il Kwan. Also known as “army stew,” this bubbling pot of sausage, Spam, ramen noodles, and cabbage has everything a good soldier - or as they’re called in LA, “Executive Assistants” - could ever need. Available for takeout and delivery.
Han Bat Sul Lung Tang Han Bat Sul Lung Tang $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 4163 W 5th St
You know what everyone’s life could stand to be right now? Easier. So we’ll make this simple - order the sul lung tang (oxtail soup). Served piping hot and filled with green onions, kimchi radishes, plus a protein of your choice (we choose the brisket), this is the kind of soul-nourishing soup you want when you need some extra comfort, stat. Available for takeout and delivery.
 Bonjuk Bon Juk $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3551 Wilshire Blvd
Contrary to popular belief (and your co-worker’s Instagram strategy), sometimes, less is more. Take Bonjuk for example - this quiet spot on Wilshire is as sleepy as they come, but their tremendous bowls of porridge speak for themselves. Our go-tos are the ones made with ginseng chicken and mixed seafood (abalone, shrimp, mussels, etc.). Available for takeout and delivery.
Jae Bu Do (제부도) $ $ $ $ Korean ,  Seafood  in  East Hollywood $$$$ 474 N Western Ave
You won’t find any bulgogi or brisket at this KBBQ spot - Jae Bu Do is all about creatures of the sea. And between the abalone, sea eel, and charcoaled hagfish, their menu is packed with so much seafood, you could essentially Frankenstein together the entire Monterey Bay Aquarium with a single order. Too dark? Available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 467-2900 to order.

We arrived at the city yesterday night around 1AM. It was a really tough road trip. It was raining so hard in Odell, IL., a lot of cars had to stop due to low visibility. It stopped raining when we got close to Springfield, IL.
Tumblr media
On the road to Kansas City from Illinois
We’re staying at Four Point KC Sports Complex. Four Points at KC Sports Complex is a category 3 hotel. It was a bad idea, I should trust the review on the SPG website. It looks like they’ve been working on upgrading the hotel. They look decent when you first step into the room but once you go in further you can smell the dampness. I open my shoes and start walking barefoot on the carpet and then I found my feet soak in the water from the carpet. I look up at the ceiling and I saw a water stain. My son walk-in and sat right away on the sofa and he found himself submerged in the wet cushion.
So my husband went back to the front desk ask for a different room and they only have one left so we just go with it. This time the room was not as wet as the first one but still, you can feel the dampness. My husband and one of my kid have asthma and allergies to mold and dust. We thought we can ignore it but their allergy is getting worst. They start sneezing, coughing, having a runny nose, itchy eyes. And tonight it’s not only them, I also start having itchy eyes. Even Claritin didn’t ease the symptoms.
I called the SPG platinum line to see if I can cancel my reservation for the next day, but they said I have to call the hotel to see if they’re willing to cancel it. Unfortunately, after being transferred to several people from the front desk, concierge and I don’t know who else, we still can not cancel it or even move to a different room since the hotel is fully booked. The only thing they did is providing us with a dehumidifier. In just 5 hours the dehumidifier is full.
Tumblr media
That’s how much water collected in less than 5 hours.
The dehumidifier does help a lot, but I’m really disappointed with how they handle this matter. They should let us cancel the room for the next day. Before SPG and Marriott merged we never have a problem canceling the room less than 24 hrs. Now they require 48 hrs to cancel the room. We were ok to stay at this hotel if the room is not wet. We don’t know the fact until we arrived which is very late at the hotel and there is no way for us to cancel the next day and the day after. (Since it will be less than 48hrs). Today we have to empty the dehumidifier twice. On the last day, we got moved to the top floor and this time the room is really nice. The manager that work at that day was really helpful and apologized for the inconvenience we experience on the first two days.
The first day at KC was super hot, it was humid and about 95 degree. First stop is Vietnam Cafe. The foods were awesome, price reasonable and they’re really generous with the portion. We order Sweet potatoes and shrimps fries, beef vermicelli, Pho, Spring Rolls and Pork Chop with rice. Everything tastes so good. My husband ordered Vietnamese coffee. I’m not a fan of Vietnamese coffee but my husband said it was a good coffee.
Close to Vietnam Cafe is City Market which is the first stop in the loop for KC Streetcar. We parked the car on the street and it’s free. (2hrs parking on then weekdays but unlimited on the weekend) KC streetcar also free their route is from the city Market down to Union Station.
We browse the City Market and found Dragonfly boba tea shop. It was an OK boba drink nothing extravagant. However, we need to fuel ourselves with lots of cold drink in this kind of heat. We bought Jasmine Milk Tea, 3 Mango Smoothies and Lychee Smoothie.
While we’re there, we also went to Yoki, Japanese based store, Arabic Steamboat, and passing a lot of fast foods, local artists, plants, produces and spices stalls.
Then we head up to the KC streetcar designated area. Oh boy, the place is packed with people. We have to wait for the second car to arrive. Waiting isn’t a big problem for us but the heat makes it very unbearable. We manage to get into the second KC streetcar and stop at Union Station.
Tumblr media
Across from the Union Station is the WWI monument. It was a very fun visit, kids really enjoy running up the hill toward the monument and the view of the city from up there is incredibly stunning. You can enter the WWI museum at about $10-$16.
Kids were so thirsty after a while and so we decided to cool down at Union station and get some drink from PARISI coffee place. We had Vanilla Frappe, Cold Chocolate, smart water, Cherry Mascarpone Frappe, and Stracciatella Frappe. I really like it because they’re not too sweet like other frappe drinks. They’re just perfect 👌
Tumblr media
Kansas City Union Station is a historical building it was built in 1914. It is an architectural masterpiece, living history and a place for a great adventure inside.
Tumblr media
Across Union Station is the Crown Center, Hallmark museum is located on this side and its Free.
Tumblr media
Next is back to where we parked and this time the KC streetcar is pretty empty. We stopped at the “I Luv KC” mural wall but the mural is halfway gone and no more wings. They’re probably going to repaint the whole wall.
Tumblr media
Before we ended the day we stopped at the Country Club Plaza where the JC Nichols fountain is located at. It was a beautiful shopping area, mimicking the European culture. There also a gorgeous Bacchas Fountain in front of Cheesecake Factory courtyard.
Tumblr media
We’re planning to have our dinner at KC famous Joe Kansas BBQ but because the line was so long we end up eating at GUS Famous Fried Chicken right across the street.
On the second day, we decided to see Nelson Atkins Art Museum. This museum is huge and it is free. My kids really enjoy the visit.
Tumblr media
Later that evening we decided to meet up with our High Schools friends (Mine and hubby’s) – We had a really fun time chatting, rendezvousing and eating. Kids also have their own fun time what a perfect thing to end the day. We were the last people out of the restaurant and still hang out in the parking lot til almost 12PM. Kids were running all over the place with my oldest son as their nanny for the night. 😂😂😂
Tumblr media
That’s how we ended our Labor Day weekend @KC.
Kansas City, MO and KS We arrived at the city yesterday night around 1AM. It was a really tough road trip. It was raining so hard in Odell, IL., a lot of cars had to stop due to low visibility.

This is something that was overdue for quite a long time as I have been wanting to visit the Slice of Spice restaurant ever since they opened and I heard about it… The restaurant is located at the same location inside Anna’s Arcade near Spencer Junction where Pizza Corner used to be… Finally after a long wait I got the chance to visit the place for lunch… The exterior looks pretty much the same as how the place looked back when Pizza Corner used to be except for of course the signs… Clearly they are proud of their Al-Ashrouf grills… On the inside however, I was quite surprised to be greeting by a lot of post-it notes everywhere on the walls and even on the false ceiling… If you can zoom into those pics, you can see that many of them are quite funny to be completely honest 🙂

A couple of weeks ago, one of the owners of this restaurant, contacted me and invited me for a private tasting event organised to test out some new items that they were planning to introduce… Unfortunately, being engaged elsewhere, I couldn’t attend the same… Hence, I contacted that owner before going there first of all to confirm the location and also to know if any of the new items are available and which they are… So, he basically informed me about a new series of grilled items in their menu, which they call as Rottsy…  Apparently it has only been a week since they started serving it… From the brief conversation with the owner and. the manager at the restaurant (whom to my surprise is somebody I have met before as manager of another restaurant which was one of my favourites when it existed), I came to understand that Slice of Spice prides itself on the special spice mixes that they have come up with… The one they call Al-Ashrouf apparently was a hit and now the Rottsy is a new one they came up with which they hope will also be a hit… The owner also recommended that I try the leg piece option unless I am a die-hard breast fan… Its not secret that the dark leg and thigh meat in a chicken tastes better than the white breast meat… He also recommended that among the beverages, I try their new Expresso Milk Shake as well…
Hence, I decided to try a piece of the Rottsy Grilled Chicken as the appetiser, while leaving the Al-Ashrouf for next time and along with it I had the Smoked Chicken Balls Soup and for mains their Malabar Dum Biriyani and for dessert, tried their Rabri Falooda… I first didn’t plan on getting the dessert and so ended up ordering an Expresso Shake as recommended by the owner at first… The decision to order dessert was made in the last minute… However, to my surprise, they made the Expresso Shake as complementary and let me express my thanks to the owner and manager for doing that…

Now, coming to the food, the first to arrive as expected was the soup they call their Smoked Chicken Balls Soup… It came as shown in the pic… From the outside, it pretty much looks like any other non-cream Chicken soup, but on the inside are two chicken meat balls, that appear to have been grilled because of the grill marks as can be seen in the pic below…
Other than the meatballs, the soup is a thickened chicken broth with eggs and green onions and cilantro… My only problem with the soup was that the broth was made too thick with starch, which I believe is completely an unnecessary thing to do… Leaving that aside, its definitely one of the best tasting chicken broths I have ever had… The meatballs made up of smoked chicken was also incredibly flavourful… The soup was also perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper… Great tasting soup that I’ll recommend to try at least once… 🙂
As I was almost done with the soup, the starter that I order, namely the leg piece of the Rottsy Chicken had arrived… They served an entire leg of the chicken that was grilled in their charcoal grill as the manager informed me and it came with some spicy mayonnaise dip and some salad… I must say that this turned out to be one of the rarest of rare instances when you get grilled chicken thats not dry at all throughout the piece… Usually if a restaurant doesn’t make it completely dry, only the parts at the centre and nearby are somewhat moist… Here on the other not only was the entire piece moist, but it was really juicy with the meat simply falling off the bone very easily…
Regarding its taste, I found it to be an incredibly complex taste thanks to their top secret marinade on the meat… But from what I could understand, which could be completely wrong, it kind of felt like the Chermoula spice mix combined with smoked paprika and black pepper and then cooked with butter if I am not mistaken… I am not 100% sure, but I think I felt a slight hint of cardamom in it as well… Anyways, its their secret… The mayo dip appears to have been spiced with smoked paprika as well and the salad appears to have been seasoned with salt and red chilly powder and it was exactly like the salad we get with tandoori items usually in most places… However, one thing I can confirm is that this Rottsy Grilled Chicken is the best grilled chicken that I have ever had so far… I’ll definitely will be getting it again in my future visits… I almost ordered some more to be taken as takeaway, but since I was not going back home directly, I left it for my next visit… 🙂
Next came the Malabar Dum Biriyani… The waiter had informed that its a Thalassery Style Biriyani, which being a Thalassery guy who has had whats called “Thalassery Biriyani” from some of the other restaurants, made me a bit skeptical but since I was really hungry, went for it anyway… So, the biriyani came in a bowl that sort of looks like a spoon as can be seen in the thumbnail pic :),  served with what I consider an unfairly tiny cup of raita (I can never understand the idea behind such severe rationing of the raita in most restaurants) and dates pickle… The biriyani came with two pieces of chicken with one of them being a drumstick piece 🙂
Unfortunately, the only part about this that I liked was the dates pickle which was awesome… Great flavour of dates and spices in it that I wish they would actually sell bottles of it as its way better that the ones we already get in the supermarket… 🙂 The raita, well, is as good as it can be… However, the actual biriyani was not as good as I had hoped… I guess it was a bad day for the chef who made it… On the positive side, the pieces of chicken was cooked perfectly and by themselves tasted good enough… However on the downside, the rice felt to be overcooked and I am not sure that actual Jeerakasala rice was used or not as I couldn’t detect the fragrance of that rice in it… The rice and the masala felt like it needed more seasoning and more spices in it… Also, one of the most important thing is the presence of the fragrance and flavour of ghee which I felt was completely missing from this biriyani… However, what amazed me is that the dates pickle that was given ended up compensating for the pitfalls of the biriyani… I say this because, when I mixed in the pickle with. the rice and the masala, the whole thing tasted quite nice… So, if you are having this and find yourselves having the same experience as myself, just make sure to ask for extra pickle and it will be fine… 🙂
By this time the expresso shake had also arrived and I really liked that one… Good taste of the coffee in there…
Having skipped breakfast, I felt like having a dessert as well and so in their menu, the Rabri falooda caught my eye… Because that reminded me of the faloodas I had in Mumbai and got it hoping to get something similar… It came as can be seen in the pics below… It had vanilla ice cream, fresh fruits, the rabri, vermicelli, cashewnuts and some blobs of butterscotch, which I think are attempts at making the English Toffee and topped with caramel and some cashew nuts…
Rabri Falooda
Rabri Falooda
Rabri Falooda
I had mixed feelings about this one… Let me tell you why… As you go from top to bottom, first you get the scoop of vanilla ice cream with roasted cashew nuts and caramel, which is great… Then as you dig further, you get the first wave of the English Toffee attempts, which are ok but I felt that they could be better… Then when you hit the fruits, then also its great… However, what all comes after the fruits in the problem… The vermicelli definitely needed some more time being cooked and since this is a falooda, I expected a lot more of the rose flavour in it… Then below the vermicelli were the 2nd wave of the English Toffee attempts and then there was the Rabri and some more ice cream at the bottom… Honestly, I felt that the flavours of the butterscotch blobs (English Toffe attempts) and the caramel didn’t quite work with the Rabri and the vermicelli and that was the problem… I mean I think if the vermicelli was properly cooked and the butterscotch and caramel was replaced with Kulfi, this would have been an excellent Falooda… I say this because I liked the taste of the Rabri used… Overall, I believe that this recipe needs to be redesigned…
After leaving the restaurant, I contacted the owner and discussed about the negative aspects of my experience… After apologising for it all, he informed me that he’ll talk to the chefs and fix them very quickly… Apparently they are in the process of completely revamping their menu… That is, more new items to be added plus, recipes of existing dishes revised and corrected if needed… Once everything gets implemented and ready, I hope that this place flourishes and truly be one of the best eating spots in Trivandrum… I for one will be eagerly waiting for it…
Slice of Spice – First Visit – New Rottsy Grill This is something that was overdue for quite a long time as I have been wanting to visit the Slice of Spice restaurant ever since they opened and I heard about it...

dinner @ Syphay
. . . I swear Syphay has become a go-to spot for my family & I haha for those who hasn’t been here before/yet, come give this place a try! It will not disappoint :D
Every time we come, we’ve been trying to order diff things & taste our way thru their menu. All the dishes from last night’s meal were a new experience for us (minus the soup for me as I’ve tried the soup before).
Tumblr media
Meat spring rolls. Each spring had rice vermicelli, pork, some carrot & cabbage (very thinly spiced), & I think. . potato? I liked them, but realistically, spring rolls are spring rolls, they’re pretty hard to mess up :P not great, not bad - good for sharing!
Tumblr media
Tohm Kha soup, which is a light coconut soup. My sister-in-law said it reminded her of the soup base of MAMA brand instant noodles + coconut milk haha come to think of it, it kind of does. I’ve had this before & I didn’t get that impression but now that she’s mentioned it. .. You get a choice of chicken or shrimp (extra $1 for shrimp) & we got shrimp. Generous amount of ingredients & the soup was flavourful with a tinge of spiciness. We didn’t order plain steamed rice, coconut rice, or sticky rice, but I think the soup mixed with the rice would taste really good.
Tumblr media
Pad Kee Maow. This is a stir-fry egg noodle dish with vegetables & a choice of protein (chicken, beef or tofu; extra cost for seafood options); we ordered it with beef. I was mostly interested in the sauce, which was a spicy shrimp paste. Personally, I love shrimp paste, but a lot of ppl probably don’t - the smell & flavour is quite strong, & when I do eat it, it’s usually with Chinese spinach, which has a “leafy” flavour to it so together, they complement each other. Anyway, shrimp paste is popular in Asian cuisine, in particular, southeast Asia, so it’s no surprise it would be on the menu of a Thai & Laos restaurant. The photo of the noodles does not look spicy but man. .. it was probably the spicicest item I’ve had from Syphay thus far! Super addicting & excellent choice for spicy food lovers (it also contains jalapeno peppers!).
Tumblr media
Gai Muk Kham. Again, the sauce attracted me haha this was a stir fry chicken dish containing a lot of veggies, pineapple & tomato in a chili tamarind sauce. I’m not familiar with the flavour of tamarind tbh; however, the feeling I get from this dish was that it’s very sweet + sour. It reminds me of Thai chili sauce + ketchup. Additionally, the spiciness was very, very mild.
Tumblr media
Syphay has 2 fried rice dishes: pineapple fried rice & Khao Pad Mun Poo. We got the latter. This was excellent! It comes with chicken & shrimp (no other options available). What I liked about it the most was the loose-ness of the rice & flavour. In short, it was well-fried, & well-seasoned!
*meh* about the spring rolls but everything else was good, esp the fried rice - it was my favourite of the evening!
