First sprint in years. Remembered why I don't like my Alinco HF. It's power settings are 100/10/1-W and for all the bells and whistles my TenTec is just a nicer radio with 4-W out and a smooth full break in.

August 2023 CW Radio activities. Adrenalizing Morsecode.
QSL-Admin: Last update on received QSL cards and Honour Roll results were from Januari 2020, so lots of work to do. My Logbook is Excel based from 2008 until today. 1978 - 2007 is a paper Logbook.
Status HR January 1st 2020 was 257 CW 9B DXCC.
Lots of New Band and 6 new DXCC (VP8, FR, Z6, XZ, XT, JX) until sofar it brings me to 263 DXCC in CW.
Pfft...
EU HF contest: Last time I Joined was 2009! No good condx I noticed, 10 was dead, but 15 - 40 were ok for 101 QSO,s and just when I wanted to try 80m, a thunderstorm came accross my QTH. I had to disconnect and lower my antenna's. Exchange was snr and year of first licence. Good to see there are lots of new entrants in HAM-radio. (doing Morse-code!)
Surplus Radio Society (SRS): A former boardmember, sent a strange mail, in a very un-usual way. Hmm, that's not the way it should go, in my humble opinion. OK, we have some "after-Corona_struggles" in this strange "social-media-oriented-society" but we have to solve this struggles with vision, organisation and avove all: Passion for Surplus Radio. It could be that we have to review our Vision and Future plans, so I was happy to read the boards' future plans in the March Surplus Radio Bulletin (P3). Upgrading towards more modern technology feels strange, but I was (again) happy to read some nice articles about Homebrew AM tube TX, AfterWW2 equipment from Drake and Collins, besides lots of inspiring Surplus oriented articles in the last two bulletins # 109 & 110. Last thing I would like to mention is activity, and at this point I can improve myself, and maybe some other members as well. I will start with more activity on 3.568MHz CW. The GRC 3030 is my best performer here, or perhaps the "modern but "all-tube-Drake TR4"?
Saturday 12th, TR4 on air, after trying some crackling switches it came alive, so QRV at 3.568 tuned it at this frequency with 100 Watts output, using the Vibroplex Standard LH from 2004. During the following QSO's I had severe switch-contract-problems so I will have to open the cabinet and clean the sitches in a proper way.
Last few days in August: Another Antenna experiment/modification is changing the feedline of my Sky Wire antenna. It was an open wire feedline, 28 meters long, slooping towards my shack, which is in the basement of our house. All Coax cables are led into my shack via an underground 250mm PVC pipe with an length of 21 meters. I made my own type of Twinax by taking two lengts of 23m RG11 A/U 75 Ohm coax to make a 150 Ohm Shielded parallel line. The last part of the feedline is stil open line, ca 17 meters up from the outdoor patching cabinet upwards to the loop connection point. RG-63 125 Ohm is probably a better alternative, but was not available here, so I decided to make it this way. First results are ok for 30 to 80 meters. The only difference is a smaller bandwidth when tuning. 160 meters is not OK yet, as I cannot tune the Loop on the TOP-band. Something to investigate in September.

6/18/22: The strange device in the photo is another thing that rolled out of my visit home. It is a telegraph key. A telegraph key is used to send Morse code. This particular model is known to its users as a “speed bug” or a “speed key.” Through an intricate set of levers, fulcrums, springs and weights, it allows extremely fast dots (short clicks or dits) in Morse code. Just as importantly, an equally intricate set of adjustments lets the user match their dot speed to their dash speed (long clicks or dahs) so that the code is “readable.” The ideal is to send dahs that are three times as long as dits. Without that flow(1), you could have the Morse code equivalent of stuttering. Or, worse, making dahs and dits indistinguishable would result in a totally garbled message.
My father had one of these because he was a telegrapher on the railroad. Telegraphers were key people in managing rail traffic, which in the United States was based heavily on schedules and rules. When he started with the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in 1949 or 1950 he was probably dealing with operators who could send over forty words a minute. That required a tool that let you match that speed. More importantly, sending code for hours at a time is fatiguing. The speed bug is not only fast, but requires less physical effort to manipulate the key. So dad bought one of these.
He still had it—and it was still widely used—when my brother and I would sometimes go to work with him in the late 60’s and early 70’s.(2) In my mind I associated it with his nearly 50 year career with the railroad. So it was the one thing of my father’s that I wanted when he died in 2018.
I learned from mom on my trip home that toward the end of his time with the Chessie System his speed bug had been stolen. It would never be mine.
The story takes a turn there though. I found out that Vibroplex is still in business. They still make the Standard S model! Because of the low energy required, Morse code is still in use by ham radio operators. And the speed bug is still sought after by operators who send a lot of code. So I bought one. (And this being 2022 not 1952, it arrived home the day after I did.)
Other than the wear and tear, and a different serial number, this bug is the exact item my father used. It reminds me of a stand-up comedian back when metaphysics became popular in the 70’s. He said that he had the hatchet George Washington used to chop down the cherry tree. The head, he said, was different. And the handle had been replaced. But, he quipped, it occupies the same space.
In that spirit, I am happy to have this reminder of my father and a life well lived. Love you, Dad!
(1) This is so much a thing that experienced operators can tell who is sending code by its rhythm.
(2) This was a tower on the east end of the Connellsville Yard across from the Anchor Hocking plant (where my aunt and uncle worked).

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Dan Robinson who notes that there currently a Squires Sanders SS-1R on eBay. He notes: Ultra rare amateur receiver. The only thing rarer is a SS-IBS, the SW bands version. This is certainly a “fixer upper” in that it will need a re-stringing and likely at least a recapping. […]

Now this is how one does radio. Put the Alinco all mode back in the box and got out my trusty TenTech rebel.
Sold as the "open source qrp" radio this transmitter has a clone of an Arduino computer at its heart. You decide how it's going to operate, you write the programming script and flash it to the radio. In my case I kept it simple if I need to know what frequency I'm on I've got a script that if I hold down the select key for 10 seconds it beeps in Morse code to me where I'm at. Other people have modified them to have display screens. Some folks dress them right up, but I wanted to keep mine simple for when I took it out into the world. Speaking of which first contact in years on this radio was a guy (W2ITT) working Parks On The Air in Long Island, NY.

The left Xograph, Canadian telegraph speed key
- FOTO A - Left Xograph -

_ Subtitle title: When the telegraph keys sold by the necessity of the moment.
This telegraphic key have Canadian origin, built by telegraphist Rolph Brown in 1920, just after the Vibroplex patent decay.
The speed key is Nickel-plated and the base lost this finish at several points highlighting the oxidation, a part this problem the rest of key is complete and fully operational.
Looking at the pictures before buying, I had noticed that it was a "left" bug, then with the arrival at my home, I discovered that the base had holes that served not to stopped the key on the work table. The first thing I thought that it was a change after market, but watching carefully the holes seemed not performed randomly, but instead they could born as a right key.
- FOTO Abis - Xograph versione dx -
Tumblr media
_ When the key arrived at home shortly before the First National Telegraph Conference, year 2013, and so for lack of time I put it in his pack and "hold it".
In 2014 with a little free time I picked up, to clean and restore it and for well understund the motive of this particular holes.
First, I completely disassembled the key to verify the reversibility, from left to right.
The axis isolated was the first part I disassembled, photo 1 (composed of the known three lines contact points, points and hot terminal), I relocated them into unused holes moving the hot terminal to the frame (all matched with the version dx), see under photo B.
Tumblr media
_ Now it was up to check the main arm or pendulum. Given its shape I could just take it apart by unscrewing the only two locking screws, I marched from the side of the operator detecting the pivot folded, possibly for a stroke suffered during the long journey from the USA. I realigned the pivot and tried to add it back into the Main frame to prove it in the right (but he failed, see below) I then moved the contact terminal and found that the old right hole, could not be reused because of the lack of space between the rubber foot and the tightening screw (this has a greater diameter than the screw which clamps the contact pylon for the composition of the lines).
Tumblr media
_ The inclusion of the pendulum arm or in the Main frame, failed due to physical problems. These problems are encountered as the keystone to understand that changing this key isn’t a change after market, but everything is born into the Xograph workshops by Rolph Brown.
The pivot dell'Xograph consists of a solid metal cube, with a notch in C, constructed in a similar manner with the first pivot products from Martin Vibroplex, see photo C.
The result of this massive mechanical increases the overall dimensions, and places the pivot axis with off-center.
This misalignment and his great mole de facto preventing the full motion of the pendulum as it touches against the Main frame already with a few degrees of movement making it impossible to use in the right version.
Also inside the base of the Main frame, there are more holes how to "recover" the misalignment and the large dimensions of the pivot, see photo C. (especially of the pendulum in the left version.)
Another clue, the Main frame in the horizontal portion where is contained the spring adjustment screws and the movement of the pendulum, presents only the hole for the abutment of the non-threaded spring adjusting screw (prepared as pre-hole of workshop for the right version. , but not threaded
Tumblr media
_ We analyze the consumption of the fingherpieces. In the exchange of the arm from right version left version, it is noted that the consumption of the blades are reversed in position, the most worn part, where the operator's fingers have worked for years, moving from top to bottom. This is another sign that the changes are dated over time and does not represent a recent change.
In view of the findings and described what can you conclude?
Meanwhile, remember the situation in North America in this historical period. Telegraphy was booming and semiautomatic keys were now become widespread and useful tools to speed up the transmission speed by minimizing the telegraph operator effort. The Bug that the request was in the maximum rise time, as the development of the same lines. The demand for new keys was so high. In conjunction the first patents Mecograph and Vibroplex had just expired, so this mix development of many manufacturers of key with the most varied projects. Among these new producers, there was also the telegraph Rolph Brown start initially her his production as after work in his workshop located under his home. It then determines a rather limited production (S / N higher I found is the number 830). Probably in the case for this key show here, someone ask to Rolph a left hand key version (out standard). We can therefore imagine that to obviate the production time, in agreement with the buyer, probabily this solution not a burden the final cost of the key ( remember that at that time a key was worth about one or more month's wages) Rolph took a base already prepared for a right key version, will supply the new holes to vary the position of the contacts, it modifies the frame and assembled only in the left version the arm to make to modify a version.
Tumblr media
_ Only for the “collector”, followed by this time the completion evidence for the modify of version of key.
The contact strips, those placed under the base and isolated see photo 1, I placed the "hot" terminal on the other side of the base, the opening where it was intended the Dump, see Simulation pictured F. Then follows the movement of the pylon of the points on the left side of the base. The lowering of the cold end to the mainframe is placed at the same point of the button in the right version. In right version the plate should be the in the midle of two terminals see picture G, while in the left version. the plate is located above the terminals, see photos F.
- FOTO F - tasto versione sx, simulazione standardizzazione versione dx.
- FOTO G - Xograph versione sx, K5VT -
Tumblr media
_ The dump truck was obviously moved to the left side of the button, but here Rolph created his first first dumper "L", similar to that previously adopted an ordinance by Horace Martin in Model-X, while the right version of the key features a dumper "I", similar to that adopted by Vibroplex Champion.
Upon completion all information available, I know to exist another Xograph in "left" version like key here exposed. Owner was Vince Thomposon K5VT now SK.
The need to satisfy the massive orders of telegraphic keys in the early 1920s also led otherfactorys, including Vibroplex to sell "unconventional key", albeit always in limited quantities. Below I've put a photo (H) of a unconvenitional "X-Racer" (So called for mix with Bluracer and Model-X, see the frame is like a Model-X key) compared with a classic Bluracer.

Review of CW Morse Paddles with weighted base
“CW Morse (cwmorse.us) makes a variety of inexpensive, 3D-printed Morse code keys. They’ve now added paddles for iambic keyers to their line. This review looks at one of their newest paddles, and reviews a bit about Morse code timing, standard (up and down) keys, sideswipers (cooties), Vibroplex bugs, and then Curtis-style iambic keying. This is a great key and can be obtained from cwmorse.us. “

May - July 2023 CW Radio activities. Adrenalizing Morsecode.
May: Samos Island Greece, no Radio, just relax & romantic manifesto.
Tumblr media
June Radio-activities:
Antenna-Chorus, (preventive) maintenance on Rotor, Cable-dispatch, Install Antenna Switch in tower, modify feedline Sky-Wire, etc.
Get WS-19 ready for Fielddays. (Solar Powered)
Unfortunately I had to cancel my attendance at the Fielddays: June 9th to 12th Veron/VRZA A49 in Ommen.
Tumblr media
Key Test: I was able to lend and test the just acquired ON4MAC-Paddle Keyer from Herman PD0HF, see for more info of this key also  https://pa0fri.home.xs4all.nl/Diversen/Paddlekey/paddlekey-eng.htm
I did a triple test in order to be able to compare. The MAC (Middle) is the most heavy and stable one, The Begali Travel Keyer (left) the very comfortable Leightweight, and the Becher (Right) is the easiest one to adjust. MAC and Begali work with magnets, when proper adjusted, this is fantastic to work with.
I have the MAC  adjusted now to my own preference and its needs just a little bit more force to key in comparison to the Begali Travel Key, but it is as stable as a piece-of-rock on the table. Congratulations Herman with this fantastic and very good-looking key! It will soon return to your shack!
Aktio40: July was good for another 103 Ragchew CW QSO’s, 20 DXCC, 4 NTC and 4 SKCC members. Thus good for requesting sticker #6. Halfway!
IOTA contest: Joined for a short moment, did 25 CW QSO’s. NTC invited me to work IP1X, which I did on 15,20 and 40M.
1A0C: wkd on 6 bands.
NTC QP: Joined again in August, 25 QSO in Mechanical Bug section with my Vibroplex Lightning Bug from 1954.
Antenna Experiments: Recently found back an old CB GPA antenna. I purchased it on the radio Club auction 10 years ago and as far as I know it came from Dick PA3CDH (SK). After a short assembly it seemed mechanically OK, I connected a 15M Coax cable and tested it with my MFJ 269 Antenna Analyser, It was OK for CB and by just adjusting the length it came towards an SWR of 1:1,2 on 28.500MHz. Thats one-band (although 1:1,4 in CW part) and I would like to test it when it is just above ground level. I would like to use it on a camping or elsewhere outdoor. Next step would be to make it multi-band, but “first things first” as practice is the teacher of all things.
