Groei & het klimaatprobleem

In opdracht van het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu heeft in 2020 een bureau het Gedragsonderzoek kleding uitgevoerd. Hieruit bleek dat de Nederlandse consument gemiddeld 173 kledingstukken heeft, waarvan 50 ongedragen zijn het afgelopen jaar. Hieruit is het doel ontstaan om de kledingconsumptie terug te dringen en daarmee ook de belasting van het klimaat. Het stimuleren van de (ver)koop van tweedehandskleding is een van de aanbevolen strategieën. Uit cijfers blijkt dat 45 procent van de Nederlandse vrouwen dit ook doen via vintageplatforms.

Vinted is DE tweedehandskleding-app van nu. Het platform groeit ontzettend snel en is druk bezig met het overnemen van kleinere spelers in die markt. Niet heel lang geleden heeft de kleding-app het Nederlandse bedrijf United Wardrobe overgenomen. Vinted is al een aantal jaar erg populair in Europa en is actief in dertien landen. De app helpt mensen om op een verantwoordelijke manier te consumeren en wordt gezien als een laagdrempelige manier om iets goed te doen voor het milieu.

De modesite Business of Fashion meldt dat de tweedehandskledingmarkt in 2019 21 keer sneller groeide dan die van nieuwe kleding. Via Vinted worden er jaarlijks meer dan een miljard kleding stukken gewisseld waardoor de waarde van die kleding in 2019 1,3 miljard euro op bracht. Bij iedere transactie verdient het platform geld. Doordat je het geld van je verkochte kleding eerst in je Vinted-portemonnee komt in plaats van gelijk uitbetaald, ga je het ook weer gemakkelijker uitgeven. Op deze manier verdient Vinted nog meer.

Dat is niet de enige groei. Op dit moment heeft Vinted 37 miljoen gebruikers en elke dag komen er 15 duizend bij. Nog nooit zijn er zo veel jonge mensen bezig geweest met duurzaam leven. Maar de realiteit is anders. Vooral jonge dames kopen veel en vaak via Vinted, omdat het voor een veel lagere prijs wordt aangeboden. Veel pakketjes komen uit onder andere Frankrijk en Spanje, en doordat het zo gemakkelijk is om te kopen en verkopen lijkt dit juist binge shopping op te wekken. Op deze manier kun je met een schoon geweten nóg sneller nóg meer goedkope kleding consumeren. Hierdoor worden juist de problemen alleen maar groter.

Tweedehandskleding kopen kan heel goed zijn maar niet op de manier zoals Vinted en andere platforms het stimuleren. De consument wordt verleid om te blijven kopen, wat geen duurzame optie is.

We moeten minder kleding gaan kopen en er langer mee doen. Door de emotionele band tussen jou en je kleding stuk te versterken, ga je er langer mee doen en heb je minder behoefte om iets nieuws te kopen. Ook hogere kwaliteit kleding stukken kopen in plaats van fast fashion stukken.

Vinted is een booming business. Er is groei in de bewustwording van kledingconsumptie. Dit vind ik heel erg goed om te zien. Helaas is het nog niet op een punt gekomen dat de druk op het klimaat lichter is kunnen worden door Vinted en andere tweedehandskleding-apps.
