I think this sport has got a weird tendancy to almost canonize legendary drivers without actually considering the circumstances that make us consider them 'heroic.' Time does not exist in a vacuum - is Niki Lauda brave and heroic for driving six weeks after burning alive during a race or was he just the victim of a sport that has never prioritised safety.

Was senna's death heroic or was he just killed by his own car in an era that saw way too many premature deaths.

It's super fucking shitty to me how many people hail these drivers as heroes and martyrs but never actually consider the enviroment that these people were operating in. Niki Lauda was one of the drivers who led a literal strike in 1982 over unfair clauses of their superlicenses - he forfeited a championship because he deemed his own life more important. The reformation of the GPDA was literally proposed the morning of Ayrton Senna's death, after the death of Roland Ratzenberger the previous day, and was officially reformed the weekend of the following race.

The more we place these drivers on a pedestal and hail them champions for driving in dangerous conditions, the less we actually have to address the conditions in the first place. If we call people like Niki and Senna and Jules martyrs of a dangerous sport and heroes who knew what they were doing and accepted the risks, we can continue being complacement when things go wrong because that's what makes these guys champions, right?

Consistently we have seen rules being changed only after drivers have died (introducing wheel tethers after Senna's crash at Imola, imposing a limit on how long a race can run before sundown - and of course the halo - both being introduced after Jules' crash.) And it's thanks to idiots like Martin Brundle and Will Buxton that let people brush everything under the rug in the name of entertainment until rules have to be changed.
