JJK-Nobara

JJK is well known for well written and non-sexualized female characters. A lot of people point to the fact that they don’t wear super revealing clothing, or have giant z cup tiddies. This is true, but I think the bar is absolutely on the floor, and doesn’t appreciate Nobara, one of the best written female characters since Riza Hawkeye. 

The first reason is that she is explicitly against the normal tropes female anime characters are often pigeon holed into. She is the woman with two men on the team, but doesn’t default to either healer who needs protecting or feelings no jutsu for the main character. Sure, she supports Itadori, but it’s as a friend, not an emotional doormat. (JJK also does a good job with the “female in the group is the healer” with Shoko, who isn’t the cutesie defenseless love interest in waiting, but instead an exhausted temperamental smoker whose time around dead and dying colleagues seems to leave her pretty dead inside but that’s a different topic.). Make her a male character and call the anime “rise of the hammer hero” and it would totally fly as a shonen anime. 

She also avoids both the “women are weak” and what I call the “kill bill feminism” tropes. She’s obviously pretty strong, but she isn’t just masculine violence, but do it in a tighter outfit. Look to her speech in the school competition, where she basically shoots down the idea that her being a woman means that she has to look cute all of the time while also being strong, but ALSO refutes the idea that being strong means that she can’t be feminine. She just doesn’t have to play male gaze respectability politics as well as being strong. This scene basically seemed like a total callout to most manga artists (and frankly writers in general) for saying that a woman has to choose between being a cute girl who happens to be strong, and being strong while happening to be female. She is one of few characters who actually is a strong female character. 

She also doesn’t fall into the very easy trap of the Mary Sue either. A lot of writers will create a character that isn’t like other girls and it ends up being more Not Like Other Girls. But Nobara has well written and subtly shown flaws as well. 

For one, she says that she cares about very few people, saying that Yuuji is one of them now. This gives her the flaw of being quite closed off and even cold hearted, without her just being the stone cold bitch or worse, the tsundere who doesn’t mean it. She’s careful with her feelings, because she’s been hurt before. Not by some ex boyfriend or abusive father, but by the circumstances of the world, outside of her control. She exists in a world and acts on it as well as being acted on by it. She doesn’t exist as an NPC for the male characters to click on when needed. This shows why she would adamantly defend Maki and cry over Yuuji’s “death” but have no problems just roasting the fuck out of Mai on sight.

Now, you might be saying, What about the “woman dies/gets hurt for man pain” trope huh? The fact that she gets got by Mahito to make Yuuji sad isn’t very subversive is it?

Well, here’s the thing. I don’t think she does get hurt to make Yuuji feel bad. She gets hurt for her own character arc. Nobara’s a little in her own head, meaning she can be inattentive AND a little egotistical. In her first introduction, she looks down on Yuuji, but overlooks that a city curse may not be the same as the ones she’s used to in the country and needs him to save her. Not because she’s a damsel in distress, but because she needs to start to learn the lesson of being more cautious. When Mahito gets her, it’s not because she’s too weak, but because she gets overconfident after hitting him the first time, and doesn’t notice that it’s a different Mahito than the one she was fighting. (Side note: I really hope she survives and learns this lesson. Maybe her unique ability to link cursed energy to the user lets her even manipulate souls like Mahito does in some way?)

Overall, she’s written to have detailed reasons for her personality, that personality isn’t just “have boobs and inspire the men to do all the work” as many anime trio girls are, and even in her flaws she has chances for growth, some of which she takes and some of which she doesn’t. She’s a complex person whose motivations lay in herself and her interactions with society, not just her interactions with the male characters (like some female characters who control gravity and wear pink we could mention. “What would Yuuji do?” would never cross her lips.)

I would even argue that she’s more well written (which does not mean that I like her better or prefer her or think she IS better) than Maki, but that’s another post.

Original title of this post:  End of Supply Chain = End of Feminism? Another COVID-19 Post. Discuss.  It won’t publish under that title.  Hmm.

This is the latest COVID-19 video by conspiratard and admitted paranoid schizophrenic* Clif High.  I say that to get the introduction and obvious credibility issue out of the way in the beginning.  I keep my eye on many channels and try to take in as much information as I can and use my own discernment the best I can when trying to figure out just what the fuck is happening.  Clif High has ideas and cites sources that I find interesting.  In this vid, one of the things that caught my ear is his observation that if and when the supply chain ends, and that could happen permanently due to the now-global COVID-19 pandemic, it will mean the beginning of a “male ethos” and the end of feminism, where feminism is more or less completely dependent on the availability of calories (for one thing) and gathering publicly in groups (for another).

He also portends the end of SJWs or social justice warrior type behaviors and activities which are dependent on the same things.  Both SJW and feminist activities are also dependent on the court system, but as he notes, the court system is pretty much shut down right now.  He doesn’t think the courts will come back online anytime soon if ever and he might be right about that.

Of course, these observations have been made by feminists before who have noted that without electricity (for example) modern women wouldn’t have the energy or leisure time to pursue feminism, which for most feminists is basically a hobby they work on when they aren’t cleaning up after, sexually servicing, and otherwise being actively oppressed by men.  In the case of women and feminism, the electric washing machine and vacuum cleaner (for example) have freed up women’s precious resources of energy and time, which some choose to dedicate to the “cause” of feminism.  For women who don’t practice domesticity or who aren’t busy cleaning up after men either personally or professionally or both, it’s tough to argue that the easy availability of calories — meaning food — hasn’t been instrumental in allowing them to choose how to spend their time, including engaging in feminist pursuits, instead of foraging or hunting for nourishment.

Clif High sees the writing on the wall with regard to feminism, if the supply chains are going to be affected permanently or long term.  Time will tell what the effects will be on supply chains, but as someone who has been involved with the radical feminist community for many years I think it’s worth thinking and talking about what the likely effects will be on the movement (such as it is) and on women if things continue down this road.  Of course, it’s possible that things will come back online in weeks to months like we are being told.  Possible, yes.  Likely?  I don’t know.

I’ve thought for a long time that if women didn’t lie to ourselves and each other about men and what they do and what they are, that things would be better for us than they are now.  As it is, we are all bogged down with betrayal-trauma when men rape and abuse girls and women, where betrayal trauma comes from being harmed/traumatized by someone we trust, or at the very least someone on whom we are reliant for care and survival.  Theoretically then, if women did not trust men, and/or if we were not reliant on men for care and survival, whatever they did to us wouldn’t be as bad as what they do to us now.  Their harming us would still be harmful but we would not suffer the additional harm of having been betrayed.  That’s important, I think.

If men were just seen as the violent rapists and abusers they pretty much universally are, meaning, cross-culturally and across time, we would have no reason to trust them.  Being captured and abused by one might be less of a brainstem-rattling life-changing event and more one that was seen as unfortunate but basically inevitable.  Instead of “But I trusted him!” and similar betrayal language, and all the negative fallout from that emotional and physical place of being within striking distance without emotional or physical protection, because we won’t admit we need it, perhaps rape would be more a case of “Damn, one got me!” on par with, perhaps, being attacked by a wild animal.  Maybe the fallout from that place would be less.  Less heartbreaking.  Less confusing.  Maybe if women didn’t lie about what men are, we wouldn’t simultaneously suffer the betrayal of women placing other girls and women in harms’ way by exposing them to men and relying on them for our care and comfort in the first place.

Of course, the liberal feminists Clif High is obviously talking about would never do that, meaning stop lying and start telling the truth about men, preferring to beg men for crumbs in men’s courts for example.  If Western civilization is about to drastically change, as Clif High believes, it’s possible that while liberal feminism and SJWs will disappear, the radicals will have more options.  Possible, yes.   Likely?  You tell me.

*He has said publicly that he “used to be” paranoid schizophrenic, whatever that means.  Personally, I think even if he or anyone is “crazy” it doesn’t necessarily mean they are wrong.

Now it’s time for ep 2. I’m going to try to keep this short, because there’s a lot to unpack here.

Onward!

Opening with the kids plus Qrow arrested, and we first hear the Atlas guards joking around in the cockpit. One phrase that sticks out to me is “nowhere to run to” as the camera pans to Weiss. Totally not foreshadowing! Whew!

Next we get the hobo activist guy. I actually liked this dude a lot. His enthusiasm reminded me a little of those progressive dudes who “support!” women but their support is more performative feminism than actual real allyship, but he seems genuine so I’m not going to harsh on him too much. He also gives us our first look at Robyn Hill and her supporters. It’s basically confirmed that she’s a gender-swapped Robin Hood and his Merry Men, so I’m really looking forward to meeting her!

Unsurprisingly, the Team ends up at Atlas Academy to meet with General Ironwood. I figured there was a pretty good chance they’d be shuffled off to him directly.

WINTER!!! Winter’s back! Crazy how popular she was given she only had like 2 episodes and a cameo in Weiss’s v5 trailer, but here she is! And a new outfit! She looks good, and it’s great to see how much unabashed affection she holds for Weiss. Between her introduction and her laying into Weiss for stealing a military ship out of worry, they really drove home how that the love Weiss holds for Winter is a mutual feeling. Winter’s fairly cold outwardly, so it’s probably not easy for her to show such naked emotion. Good for them!

Now onto the hot topic of the episode. We learn that Winter, Penny, and the Ace-Ops all know of Oz, Salem, the Maidens and the Relics. Ironwood asks a few perfunctory questions, and Ruby... lies to him. In particular, she uses the SAME lies that Ozpin does. The ones that drove RWBY, Qrow and JN_R away from Oz. It’s an act of unabashed hypocrisy that is both startling and worrying, and not just from a narrative standpoint. But I won’t get too Doylist with this review. Just know that I am VERY interested to see how things move forward, and how James will eventually react, both to the truth of Salem, and to the fact that both Oz and Ruby have lied to their allies, as well as how Team RWBY are going to address their tense relationship with Ozpin.

Moving on, Ironwood unveils his plan to reveal Salem’s existence to the world at large while simultaneously restoring global communications. If Salem were killable, this would actually be a great idea. There would be initial loss of life due to widespread panic in each Kingdom, but eventually the world could unite against a common enemy and defeat it once and for all. Unfortunately, we the audience know that that isn’t possible, and so all this will do is create unnecessary panic and death. Ruby and co are on a countdown to Atlas’s potential fall, and the deadline is when the tower is finished. They need to make a decision on how to handle both Ironwood AND Ozpin before then, or they’re fucked.

And finally, Watts and Tyrian! They’re already in Atlas! I got shivers watching their introduction this volume: Watts strolling casually through Mantle hacking everything in sight was incredible, and hearing Tyrian slaughtering some poor sod over the phone was so delightfully dark. As if the stakes couldn’t be any higher, now we have two of Salem’s most dangerous and intelligent operatives in the kingdom, ready to wreak havoc! I’ve got a really good feeling about this volume, so I’m very excited!

Okay WOOOO. So hey, I'm here doing a DR pre-season, because? I am cracked, a mess and SOOO EXCITED. Also, I looked up fun words, to find something to use as my confessional codeword, and "brouhaha" means "a noisy and overexcited reaction or response to something" WHICH IS SO APPROPRIATE. So woo, enjoy the brouhaha that is my excitement for this season. I just wanna say a couple of things: 1) Nicholas and Julia posting those clock gifs is gonna make my head fall off, thats so scary. If it means past season twists like someone said in the VL, I'm NERVY. RoseGold POVs are my biggest fear, and I know there was a season where prejury was all about them so YIKES. Calling it now, I'm gonna get sent home by a rosegold PoV. 2) Emily and Lukas was such an iconic F2, no matter whomst the F2 is in Orre, we will never match them 3) I wanna make some pre-season picks of who I expect to see cast, that way if they win, I can take total credit. I'm feeling like Raffy, Sammy and Aren might be in the cast, based on literally nothing khajsdfla. Raffy as a player terrifies me (I was also the person who brought him into this community so whew), but he gets CRACKED so whew! Aren is a scorpio so we stan. ANYWHO. I'm so excited for this season, its gonna be a HOOOOOT.

Hola, did you miss me? This is going to be me reflecting back on my Johto experience and trying to point out the mistakes I made, and how this game will be different. (this is before cast reveal) The first mistake I did in Johto was go against the premade. I was wary of Connor and Ari, and I thought painting the target on the returnee wouldnt only be easy but would be successful. And then I found out that I couldn't, and then Connor made friends with everybody on my team and fucked me over in the long run. The second mistake I did in Johto was being messy. A prime example was making pseudo "alliance" chats in order to sway the vote for people to keep me. This proved to be unsuccessful. I also had a mental breakdown like every night, so that just buried me more. The third mistake I did in Johto was throw the veto the week I was nominated. I felt like I couldve won it but I decided to study for my test. I didnt compete in the pov that i  shouldve won. SO now its time to do what I need to do for my redemption is quite simple. The last 3 ORGs ive played for BB i have made 2nd, 4th, and 3rd. And I learned quite a lot To negate my first mistake I'm not going to publicly target anbody. I will join the mob mentality to ensure my safety in early weeks. To negate my second mistake I am going to keep all my alliances as 1on1s. No alliances bigger than 3 people, and make sure to keep whatever information I have to myself. I will not snake out any information. To negate my third mistake is to try in all competitions. I will not throw anything I will not submit for anything unless I really cant. If I give it my all and still leave I can't beat myself up that bad. I'm nervous, but I'm ready. These freaks aren't gonna know what hit them.

Okay one hour to premiere! The fact that I've made two DRs pre-season? thats wild. WHEWIE. Okay I tried filming a video confessional, but my thoughts are such a mess, so I've decided writing it out will be considerably more coherent. YIKES SO. This season is already so wild, like this cast.... is gonna be a lot. I already can tell this season is going to have lots of fights and I don't know... how ready I am for that eeeek. But otherwise, my illiteracy means I don't understand the lottery twist so I love that. The returnee twist is fun though, like I feel like at the start of games, I go into panic mode, so having returnees I can go to about that, might make them feel like I'm an easy number and that they want to work with me? The people I knew before this season (like I'd actually spoken to): Bryce, Julia, Ashvika, Autumn & Olivia (I loosely knew Ricky, Blake & Sammy too) Within the game itself, the people I've had the best conversations with are Jose, Kat, Olivia, Ashvika & John. Olivia is like one of my favourite people in the community, and also a super good player so I'd love to work with her. I also think the fact that we are friends is something nobody in the cast should know (I think) so thats fun. Jose was such a big threat/player last season, and the vibe I get from him this time is he wants to tone that down? I'm not good at working with super cracked people, so him being slightly in the middle between UTR and cracked, will make him a super good person to work with I think. He is also the only person I've like...talked game with, even though its super limited, just that I wanna work with him. I'm a weirdo and watched all the Alola cast assessment stuff, and it sounds like Kat was playing really well, but got stuck in a funky position and couldn't recover, so I think she is gonna be a major threat this time and I'd love to work with her too woooo. Ashvika is a queen. Just plain and simple. She is so wholesome and nice, and already seems loosely on the same page as me, so thats iconic. Okay SO. I filmed a video confessional earlier, but its already super out of date so its time for an update! I have spoken to lots of people that I hadn't talked to since premiere night which is good, Alivia & Kat are so nice! Jose is, as always a king, and I think (other than Olivia) he is my closest ally rn, so woo we stan. Otherwise, I spoke to Bryce, and it seems like (praise be), I'm not getting nominated, WOO! He says he is nominating Roxy/Autumn, with Julia getting the future shock thingie. Like I told him, the future shock is kind of like a curse and we know Julia loves a good curse, so its a good matchup aljdfkas. Otherwise, these nominations make sense. I LOVE Autumn, but she has been the quietest person in the cast, so I assume she is gonna go first rip. Roxy I have spoken to a fair bit, but I know she is in a funky timezone, which probably throws off her ability to be active. Bryce seemed like he was being pretty open with me, so I hope I'm not the backup plan if somebody comes off. I'm good with all the returnees at this point. None of them have beef with me, and I made it clear that I want to work with all of them (while this is farther from the truth). I'm just being diplomatic because there's some tension between the returnees that will have to be released soon. With the returnees I connected automatically with Zeezo. Me and her didnt even small talk its was just game talk from moment one. Thats a great relationship to have, and I'm definitely maintaining it. Jose and Alivia have been talking to me more. Jose has been more open with working with me than Alivia so : \\. All the returnees from Kanto-Sinnoh are here because theyre entertaining, the bitches from Unova-Alola would be casted for redemption but don't meet the criteria. I made an alliance with Jelaminah and Ricky. This is mostly because I need to be on Jelaminah's good side because I know the bitch knows how to play. So i would rather be scheming with her than against her. Ricky is just a number. On housecalls I saw that Jela was talking to Julia a lot. So I started talking to Julia a lot more. I surprisingly trust her a lot more than I thought I would. So me and her aren't beefing, but her and Bryce are. HOS20 affects this game because Julia and Saxon are aligned in this game and they're against Bryce and Sammy as of right now. I know Julia can drop a vendetta, but Saxon is just horrible about it. And I hate Saxon so much. He just gives me second hand embarassment and i dont know why. Like I'm so happy I've trained myself to hold my tongue because the shit he wears on housecalls actually make me laugh. He posted a picture of him shirtless and it was literally looking at rotten spam meat. Its not cute, and he is just so prude in pms because he obviously doesnt want to talk to me. With him im trying to show myself as a puppet, or somebody who is very very useful with him. And I actually showed that this week when Bryce won HOH. Won't lie I didnt want but also wanted HOH at the same time. When Bryce won it I was very wary of what was going to happen. Then John comes up to me saying that Bryce is thinking of nominating him. And since I had a decent bond with Bryce I know that I had to save John. So when Bryce talked to me he was dead set as Roxy as the initial nom and target, and Julia for safety this week.  Then he mentioned that he was on the fence because he didnt know if he wanted Autumn or John nominated. So I told him the truth that it would be silly to nominate somebody as active as John. And so John wasn't nominated. I stuck my neck out for John and was one of the reasons he isn't nominated this week. And these game things build genuine trust since I'm not just talking to talk. I'm walking to walk and this game isn't ready for Randyy.

okayyyyy so this is definitely something different like bb is hard tbh. there's too many people to talk to and i just really don't care about continuing to keep up a convo with some of them but you have to or bye bye. i have definitely not been as social as most and that is def scary but the people that i have talked to and made connections are super nice. so that's why i was so glad when the people that won HOH and POV are people i talked to. uuhHHuh i have no fucking clue who i want to evict tonight so that's fun! ya know autumn is super nice and chill but she did go dark for a while and roxy is super fun and i still haven't heard ANY singing and i want to and she is campaigning really hard so she really wants to stay BUT since she's campaigning so hard to stay and kinda saying anything to EVERYONE who knows what she'll do to stay in the game later on. idk is it too early to be thinking about later in the game?? idkkk thanks for coming to my rambling ted talk. find out next time on if i've decided.

OK SOOOO the eviction is coming up tonight and its either going to be Autumn or Roxy! NOw autumn is a super sweet queen but i feel like she will kill me if need be! but i still lvoe her! now roxy she is fighting for her life like she is making me promises i think she will not be able to keep. bc ive heard form other hosue guests she is making the same promises to them. NOW i love talkin to her about food and cooking but i feel awful that im most likely going to evict her! but o well it has to be done im glad its not me

i feel like i should give like a summary of like where i am with everyone and how i feel about them all before the first eviction! ALI: Well i first knew him because he reached out to me about a game he is gonna host. He like doesn't talk to me much which makes me nervous... I like him a lot but looks like we are just acquaintances atm. ALIVIA: OK I FREAKIN LOVE HER! SHE IS HILARIOUS! WE STARTED A ALLIANCE CHAT CALLED SCAMMERS R' US AND RICKY LEGIT FREAKED THE FUCK OUT AND WE WERE ALL LIKE WTF JUST HAPPENED HE IS INSANE! i hope i get to work with her a lot during this game and talk about ice cream! But i do see her stabbing me in the back later on so ill prob strike first. LOVE YA ASHVIKA: now this girl is a goddess she is beauty and she is grace! we talk like avg and stuff we have small chats nothing about gamewise. I see her as not being a threat as in targeting people or winning HOH i see her as a social threat. I think she will go far but not win she will def be jury. I think she is amazing tho and shes a model soo like i want to be her. AUTUMN: Now Autumn is a delight to be around so sweet and seems so pure but she will kill me i just know it.
