Go Watch the Venture Brothers

So just heard the complete and utter Bullshit news that Adult Swim has cancelled one of (if not the best shows) they have the Venture Bros. This series is one of those shows that for WHATEVER reason never got to the level of fandom Rick and Morty has even though they’ve been at the genre parody game longer and in my opinion better.

The series is about Rusty Venture former boy adventurer and failing super scientist who in an attempt to keep his head above water in debt goes around with his two boys Hank and Dean, and bodyguard Brock on misadventues while various legal archnemisis go after him, such as the Monarch.

So if you never watched or never heard of this 7 season series let me give you a break down on why you should,

1) Art Style & Animation

Venture bros is one of those rare Adult aimed animated series that that really truly tries to utilize their medium to the best of their abilities. Season 1 had like such a small budget and corners had to be cut so it can be a little hard to watch at times.

But with each passing season they get a little better, a little more fluid, go just a little harder and it truly feels rewarding to watch. Like seeing an artist you follow online improve over the years. Like they COULD have stayed with the choppy and stiff animation from season 1 it fit right in with its fellow adult animated shows but it didn’t. They strove for quality to have something that matched the story they were telling.

2) The Writing

Venture Bros has some of the tightest and consistently great writing of ANY serialized show I’ve seen, adult, animated or other wise. Wanna know why? Cause it’s all done by TWO people (save for like one ep each season where one other person is allowed to touch their baby). Yeah TWO people and they work their asses off every season to interject, humor, refrences, parody, plot and character development in equal measure.

3) Character Development

Um yes in case you were wondering that’s right an adult animated show has CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT that holds as the series goes on. Not to give spoilers but characters will go through changes in alignment, relationships will develop and change, some characters will go through negative arcs where they are straight up unbareable for a season before coming out the other side even better than they were before. There is no end of epsiode or even end of season reset. Characters, settings, and dynamics all change over the course of the show and it feels just so god damn good.

4) Story Development

Just like the characters the story of the Venture Bros grows and changes each season. Things that are set up even as early as season one are paid off as the series goes on. Like not to be that bitch but you know how RIck and Morty teases an overarching plot ALL THE TIME but like will often just spit in the face of fans hoping for more than like one episode a season addressing it? Yeahhhhhhh that doesnt happen here, fans are consistently rewarded for putting the time in to rewatch and really think about what happened in the series. Characters that are seen in the background or are just referenced by other characters will be brought in to be recurring characters, things that start off as a small detail or gag will be given larger relevance and each time they do this you get that “OH I remember that from last season! So thats what it was!” The writers WANT you to rewatch, they WANT you to analyze and they WANT you to theorize, and they give you a show that gives back the time you put in.

5) Parody & Reference

This series does a great thing with parody. They make real characters who are just as enjoyable as the characters they parody, they make story lines that both poke fun at the absurdity of the media but shows the writers love for it. So often parody and references are just used to mock the thing but with Venture Bros you feel the love and care so when you know the thing being parodied you can laugh but feel good about laughing cause they are never laughing at a thing maybe you cared for in your youth but rather laughing with it.

And it’s never just one thing. When they parody a thing its often layered with other things to make it even more unique. Scooby-Doo is overlayed with famous criminals, Laura Croft is mixed Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, GI Joe is given the look of the Village People and so on. They never go for the easy joke or reference. Hell theres an episode that starts with them reciting the lyrics to David Bowies Space Oddity for really no reason other than they could. They weave these things in naturally with their setting and characters so nothing feels out of place. Like if you dont catch a reference or parody you dont feel like “I think this isa reference to something?” like a LOT of things do not just adult animated shows. You arent taken out of the moment cause it all feels so natural.

6) The Characters

God damn these characters, I could go on for hours about these characters. From main to one off these are some of the most likeable characters you can find. I mean it when I say I can’t think of a single character I wish they had cut cause they are all so well created. Even the ones I hate i have fun hating cause they were made to be that way. I’ll be good though I’ll only talk about my absolute top faves.

- The Monarchs

You ever sit and wish villain couples could have functional healthy relationships? Well look no further than Malcom Fitzcarraldo aka The Monarch and Dr. Shelia Girlfriend (yes that is her last name). The Monarch is a high strung impulsive saturday morning cartoon villain whos tendency to over react is only matched by his unspecified hatred of Dr. Venture. And Dr. G is his nonsense partner in crime who will cut a bitch if they don’t play by their admittedly weird rules. Both characters are great on their own but are better together. Though that doesnt mean they always get along. Like a real couple they have their ups and downs they fight, break up, make-up and grow stronger in their relationship with each season.

- Shore Leave

Ok ok so I want you to imagine James Bond, mixed with GI Joe simmering in a cocktail of the most flamboyant gay men you have ever seen and you have one of my favorite gay characters/characters in general. Shore Leave is a member of OSI (the shows SHEILD/GI Joe parody organization) he’s loud, brash, flippant, sassy and highly competent at his job loving every second of getting to beat bad guys down within an inch of their life. I love seeing him play off the stoic Brock and the two have this great brotherly dynamic that’s never called into question. He also gets to have a very cute romance with Al the Alchemist (who is also great). I could talk about this man all day.

- Dr. Rusty Venture

They did such a good job with this man. He’s a self serving, sexist, perverted, whinny, self important asshole and yet you feel pity and genuine sympathy for him and want him to succeed. You can see how Dr. V was given a raw deal by his father who seemed to care more about his adventures than his sons well being and how this molded him into the bitter man he is today, but on the flip side you can see where he chose to use that as a crutch for his worst behaviors and impulses. Seeing him slowly grow and change and be an actual good father to his boys while all the while still be a giant dick is actually really great.

- Dr. Byron Orpheus

Ahhhhh Dr. Orpheus part Dr. Strange Parody part busybody stay at home dad, he’s just such a delight. Dr. Orpheus is a divorcee, with an unfulfilling job of maintaining order to the cosmos (which isnt as hard as one might think), and uses his magical ablities in ways most of us would (ie menial tasks and home chores). Overly dramatic and affectionate Dr. O is a delight whenever he appears, but he’s at his best around his daughter and old friends The Order of the Triad.

Again I can go on but all these characters ranging from main to recurring are crafted with the utmost care for you to want to see them succeed or fail, to see them again even if you know it’ll never happen, and want them to cross paths with other characters.

The Venture Bros is one of those series that I will ALWAYS recommend even to the pickiest of humor tastes. But if you don’t believe its as good as I said or don’t think the concept is to your tastes I’ll recommend a few eps that I think best show off the base idea of the series without giving much away. In terms of plot and spoilers, though somethings wont make a lot of sense.

- S1 ep10 "Tag Sale – You're It!" - Dr. V is having a yard sale so of course all manner of costumed weirdos show up. - S2 ep5 "Twenty Years to Midnight" - basically a fetch quest around the world to save the planet with daddy issues - S3 ep2 "The Doctor Is Sin" - Again daddy issues but with one of the best recurring characters and a great showcase of the series deeper emotional plots - S4 ep6 "Self-Medication" - Really embraces the parody as Rusty goes to a former boy adventurer support group. Anyway the show is 7 seasons with 80 episodes, please go watch it. I will never forgive @adultswim for cancelling what was to be their final season. And in closing GO TEAM VENTURE!

Part 1 🧚‍♀️Hi lily would you mind if I ask you something? so I follow this other writer on tumblr and I really genuinely enjoy their writing which are all reader inserts. But the thing is that they often describe certain physical characteristics in their writing that might not be universal for everyone and reading it makes me slightly uncomfortable. Its not anything major like skin colour but more of "freckles on the cheek" or "blushing" (that dark skinned poc like me dont show) or even ....

Part 2🧚‍♀️ " your long hair tied up messily". I want to inform them of this without sounding rude so how should I do this? I feel like you're someone who would be good at these situations so that's why I'm asking you this but please ignore this if you dont want to answer it 🙈

okay so- I think this may be an issue not of using racially coded language, but of a writer being unable to separate their own personal narrative from their writing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. it’s the same way that like- I tend to write my main characters as being motherly whereas I know a lot of my followers probably don’t ever want to have kids. like- we each have different things that make us human and we tend to infuse our writings with those things. yes. you need to be careful not making things explicitly racist and be wary of color-coded language- but all of those things- besides the blushing thing- don't strike me as racially coded.

My POC followers tell me if I'm wrong but POC can have freckles and long hair- like- jimin has freckles? and from the discourse on the internet, I've seen alot of people consider Koreans in some way POC? (mostly in refrence to how the music industry treats them as non-white tbh) my mixed cousins have freckles? so do my Latina cousins?

on the subject of the long hair thing; In college, I had a Jamaican friend who had dreads down to her ass and would tie it up in a messy bun all the time. but also another thing; I've heard Indian people and southeast Asian people refer to themselves as POC- people who historically don't have the same 4c hair that a lot of African POC have.

its a really interesting debate- whether or not certain language is color-coded or not. the blushing thing is another story- and that is racially coded language. but the other things aren’t stuff that exclusively belong to one race or another. I think you should probably leave it up to one of her Poc followers to call this person out for their racially coded language- otherwise, you might just want to leave it alone Besides the blushing thing- that you could probably safely inform her of.

But as I'm white- my opinion really doesn't matter on this, this is just my gut reaction to your ask, if any of my POC followers want to chime in and educate us! please feel free and do so!

chalkzone an the overworld are connected by an un-erase-abal portal (dont ask why or how) and some people have chalk others dont,, people who dont have chalk sometimes visit the chalkzone but people who do have chalj usually fuckin LIVE there and are basicially chalk police but way cooler

the chalk police like keeping order and making sure no one causes chaos and can and will confiscate chalk

snap - a challklike hybrid orphan that goes to rudys school. doesnt know if he even has a family, doesnt give a shit. he would be in highschool if he cared abt his grades and was on his way to failing 8th grade AGAIN but then a wild rudy appeared and became snaps best pal and snap was happy cause he met a really good pal!! he hangs out in the chalkzone with rudy and penny alot,, he sees rudy as a little brother and is pretty protective of him,, also rudys sidekick! he doubts himself alot cause hes not full chalk like the others are. he carries around chalk incase rudy loses or runs out of chalk

rudy - a normal everyday human kid. also snaps best friend! hes just your normal dumbass 7th grader,, he also has chalk but his parents wont let him stay in the chalkzone until hes done with school so he hangs out at the cz with snap and penny afterschool when they dont have hw and over the weekends! snap is rudys sidekick when shit goes down in the cz

penny - rudys friend. shes in 8th grade and is in advanced classes so rudy and penny usually hang out afterschool. penny is smart af and could go on for hours about almost anything if you asked her abt certain things. she often tries to help snap find if he has any alive family, but snap is certain hes just a trashbaby, and declines any and all help

skrawl - EVIL MAN EVIL!! he often tries to get snap to join the evil club and is really nice to snap but will not hesitate to call rudy and penny every name in the book. i thought it would be funny to add a vine refrence so guess what vine im refrencing: skrawl will sometimes attempt to put his hand over snaps or try to grab snaps hand, snap will immediently react by jerking his hand away and giving skrawl a free death glare

everytime i learn anything new about ger-. Gerry, about gerry keay, i am reminded that i love him.

Also just, its nice to cathegorise, i find it a bit suprising that jonh hadnt put together that the entities are fears

I am not sure why only fear would have....Hmm i could spin so many theories about that part, there are at least 5 explanations at the top of my head and I feel that if I get into them it frankly would be wilder then This is a horror podcast, and it wants to tell stories about fears, which is the meta explanation, but there are a lot of in podcast possible reasons as well..

Anyway, I really like the colour analogy, especially how you would strech the variations only as much as they would serve you. We dont make different words for colours if we dont need them, and if the differences between two things are important to us, we willmake the necessary words. Anyway pink is a different colour then red because magenta looks quite a bit different then red and like, we still call light red pink, uts actually the definition, but when i think of pink its much more magenta, yeah there is no way to engage me then making it colour theory

Im not sure I personally would subscribe as much to the 14 idea of smirk, not just because id happily punt smirk to death with a pipe (.. i remembered the leitner situation after writhing that one so refrence is partially intentional) but also because i uhh. okay so i see msot of those but also i wouldnt really seperate some of theese from eachother. Like the hunt and the slaughter? From a practical standpoint i can totally see it, and also the hunt, on the colour wheel, is between the slaughter and the eye, somewhere closer to the slaughter. There is of course some of the desolation but like. Hmmm. The colour wheel really needs to be done, ill spend hours just thinking about it untill i do it

Anyway I cant bepieve i kept calling the lonely the blue. Well to be fair i mostly called it the loneliness, but still

Anyway, I had heard of some of them online, like outside of podcast when looking at the fandom, I have seen all the names of the watching. The eye. The beholding. The terryfing ordeal of being known. the creep ass nerd entity (that is why gertrude was so dangerous. she had jock energy among nerds)

Anyway I hadnt even wondered about meat not being a common fear because it frankly seemed quite common to me? Maybe its because my grandmothers brother had a meat factory once, and so i learned at a young age all the shit that can go into one, maybe because everyone I know was at one point unnerved by what the fuck is in processed meat, maybe because i just consider it a common enough fear to be desensitised of it. (no wondering baout the name of that one. meat is meat. and like, isnt the fear of being just a slab of nothing more then a bunch of proteins held together in weird ways a common fear? its not about eating as much as about what you are eating, to me i guess)

and like the hunt also, i just assumed it was the fear of loosing yourself to it. And of course we have so much fear of being prey left over actually, like damn have you never felt like pray? Its such a viseral emotion that i wouldnt wonder for a second if someone gave me proof that it had a physical manifestation beyond a wild sprint around twisting alleyways, to get away, away before someone caught up to you. And like its not often about being eaten, its about being murdered or raped at 3 am on the way to your apartment when someone youre not sure you could take into a fight keeps making the same turns as you and slowing down when you slow down, changing routes to intercept you, persistance hunting

I dunno, i guess i just felt it pretty recently, there was this one occasion a few months back when i was certain this man was following me, made several purposeful changes of pace and direction and looking at car rareview mirrors to see if they waited for me to turn first, and i basically just lucked out that i knew the neighborhood better and can run pretty fast. Its not really a something you can proove or is realy worth going to authorities over, and nothing happened and i had other precautions and all, but the situation couldve taken a turn for the complicated or dangerous, and also I can safely say that humans still very much feel like prey, its just other humans doing the hunting

Aaaaanyway, i guess it can also be said that the spiral is kinda between the web and the stranger. I dont think if i wouldve called the spiral that, I used fractal more often? Because they were often mentioned in podcast and I like, its close to the stranger, i think i might just be forgetting the difference, because well the thing that michael wasnt before, i think its the spiral currently, but also the spiral is a bit of a facet to the stranger, but it does have this underline of lack of control over your actions (and also the wanting to know aspect i guess)

Anyway i really enjoy thinking about this stuff and also i should make a colour wheel
