"Get back here you dirty little-" Part 2.
It had been three weeks since mikey's little prank went horribly, horribly wrong and Donatello was still bitter.
Oh, he played it off well. Laughing and joking alongside his reckless younger brother and the brute who was supposed to take the blunt of Mikey's incessant boredom.
Yes, he had them all fooled. Even their fearless leader had seemed to move on from the whole episode.
Sighing, Donatello slouched back against his chair, rubbing his temples in annoyance. He couldn't get his conversation with the eldest out of his head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back in the lab, donnie tried to gain control of his emotions. He played it off as if he was fine but he knew Leo wasn't buying any of it.
Nonetheless, Leo remained silent, only interrupting the quiet with a low voice when Donnie needed to shift to get that damn purple bra out.
He couldn't be more embaressed. April...his friend...his crush, laughed at him like he was some stupid joke. She didn't seem to care about his feelings and neither did his brothers.
A small voice told him he was being illogical, that if someone with the Leo's self control can't hold back a chuckle at the sight of him, then perhaps he shouldn't be so hard on her...or himself.
Yet, feelings were often illogical as well.
Finally, Don couldn't take the pressure of the deafening silence and the raging of his heart.
"Leo, can you please say something? The silence is driving me up the wall!" Don snapped.
Leo blinked slowly, unsurprised by the reaction.
"The adhesive is settling. You shouldn't move for the next few minutes Don, or we might have to start the process over again." Leo spoke in a neutral tone.
Nodding, Donnie found a comfort in Leo's words, focusing on the task at hand before jumping into conclusions. They were very much alike, in that sense.
"You're right Leo, I'm sorry." Don apologized.
Leo shook his head, a small wistful smile on his face.
"You have nothing to be sorry for, Don."
Don shivered a bit, tears in his eyes.
"I called myself a freak.....and in a sense, I guess I called you guys that too."
Breathing deeply, Leo placed a gentle hand on his brothers shoulder. Don took that as a sign and wrapped his arms around his eldest brother holding on tight.
"D," Leo called out in a small voice, using the nickname Donnie hasn't heard from his leader since they were children. Don took shaking breaths as the tears began to flow heavily now.
"We all have these types of doubts, fears and thoughts. It is normal and it happens. But you cannot let these thoughts take control." Leo's voice was soothing, a whisper against Don's head.
"I know how much you guys want to be human. Hell, I want to be human," Don's eyes widened. Leo almost never swore, only when he was letting his leader role slip. Here, in the lab, in this moment Leo was not the leader of the team, but a brother comforting his heartbroken sibling.
"I know that you want to be human most of all. Mikey wants to make friends and Raph wants to find his passion but you? You can't hide this from me. I see it every time we go topside, like a weight is lifted off your shoulders. I see it when you first met April, the thirst for knowledge driving you to go days without sleep. I see it as you lock yourself in your lab for hours at a time, dreaming to be anyplace, anywhere from here."
Don froze, eyes wide in realization. He had tried so hard to hide his longing from his family, as not to hurt them. Yet, he couldn't deny a single thing Leo had said.
"I am grateful for the life I have-" Don began.
Leo gave his brother a small, sad smile.
"I know you are, but you want so much more. And you deserve it Don. But the world can be unforgiving and fate is cruel. I know Mikey's prank hurt you and I know it's not just because of your feelings for April either."
Now it was Don's turn to be shocked, he pulled away and looked deep into Leo's blue eyes. He could see such clarity, like an ocean gently pushed by waves against the sea, on a bright and warm day.
"April has your heart not only because you have fallen for her, but because she represents your acceptance in society. You feel if she does not accept your advances then you are destined to be an outsider, never belonging. But you do belong, you belong with your friends, your family and your team. And I swear to you this, one day you will find someone who loves you for you, and give you all that you need in life. Just wait, she'll come. "
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don had thought long and hard about that conversation, going days without sleep. Leo was right, as usual but Don didn't realize how deep his feelings for April could get. He had spent so much time trying to please her, he hadn't thought about whether she loved him for him.
As much as it hurt, Don knew he had to let these feelings go. April wasn't the one for him. He had tried to make her happy for so long but all she ever saw him as was a friend, and only a friend.
So when she called next, he didn't pick up the phone.
When she had visited, he treated her kindly, but the glow he used to see around her was no longer there.
When she told them that she was going out with Casey last Friday on a date, he honestly felt happy for her.
In the few weeks since his conversation, Don completely transformed himself.
He didn't need April to find his place in the world. His place was by his brothers side and for now, that would be good enough.
A wicked smile played on Don's lips.
Now it was time for some revenge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"AYE! DON YA STILL ALIVE IN THERE?!" Raph yelled, smacking his fist against lab door repeatedly.
"Yeah dude! You have been in there all day!" Mikey called out, missing his purple banded brother.
Both of the brothers knew that little prank Mikey pulled a few weeks back did not go as planned and as a result, Don got the hypothetical short end of the stick.
That short end of the stick resulted in a sticky, angry, hula dancer of a genius brother.
Most people assume Mikey to be the goofball and therefore, not the sharpest tool in the shed, but if anyone thought Mikey didn't know Don would get back at him, they were sorely mistaken.
Mikey knew better than anyone the wrath of a pissed off Don could surpass a furious Raph any day.
" 'Mon Donnie! Open da damn door!" Raph roared once more, shoving the lab door with his shoulder.
"Raph wait!" Mikey's warning fell on deaf ears, as there was an audiable click.
They tensed.
"Dat can't be good...."
A net swooped down on the brightly banded brothers and scooped them right off the floor.
"Hey!"
"What da-"
Neither brother had a chance to answer as they were thrust violently to left. There was a shift in the air and both brothers turned to be hit in the face with cream pies.
"EW!" Mikey yelped as he got splattered with the fillings.
"Dat's it!" Raph roared, taking out his sai and cutting a hole through the net.
The pair fell with an audible thud on the hard ground. With the wind knocked out of them, Raph got to his feet eyes blaring.
"I'M GONNA KILL DAT BIRDBRAIN!"
Suddenly, sharp and hard small rounds hit Raph's shell.
"Oh what now?!" Raph turned around only to be sprayed in pink paint balls, Mikey yelping out loud as one hit his tail. They both dove for the couch, only to be met with a pile of colorful feathers that sprayed up as the pair fell into the pile.
Five minutes passed and the bullets subsided, losing all their rounds.
Mikey helped pull Raph to his feet. Both of them were a mix of pink, green and white, with feathers stuck in the cream that covered them head to toe.
Click!
There was a flash of light and the pair turned towards the source.
With a mischievous smile, Don stood in the middle of the living room, phone in hand.
"My, my what a mess! I'm sure Leo and Sensei will appreciate this picture as to clear some things up."
Don was running away, laughing before the end of his sentence as the pair came charging after him.
"'RE DEAD DON!" Raph boomed.
"I GOT PAINT IN PLACES NO TURTLE SHOULD HAVE PAINT!" Mikey roared.
The three spent the better half of the day chasing after one another and having a food fight with the remaining cream pies.
I have to say, Don thought to himself, there is no place I rather be!
