queendom episode six!

i'm just gonna do a short review for this episode since it was just the vocal stages this week. it was about what i expected from the vocals, and there wasn't anything that was egregious, so all in all i liked all the stages!

minyoung + hyolyn

i would die for them. i love to my youth and it's such a good choice for the two of them. mnet don't think i didn't notice that you changed the stage AGAIN, but i like the lil extended platform so i will not complain. even though it was a vocal stage they still included a bit of staging, by having the two of them start in different places and then meet up in the middle, in a multitude of ways: physically meeting with a hug, the projections 'walking' towards each other, and also the streetlamps lighting up down to them! very simple and neat attention to detail that adds to the stage without distracting from the vocals. very limited palette across the board, and their outfits are very simple as well, which really adds to the 'stripped down' atmosphere. hyolyn can absolutely body ballad stages in the same way she can body a dance stage (see this stage from double trouble as another example) so i'm not surprised about all the little details. my fave from this round easily.

wjsn + viviz

they've got the most set going on and i'm not gonna lie that flower swing is gorgeous. and i liked that they drew the theme up into the mic stands as well. it was a good choice that they all went to the extension as opposed to falling back to the main stage, it makes it feel like a more intentional focusing of the energy because there's just the three of them. i liked soobin's dress the most, but no complaints about the others', they're all on theme and no one looks out of place. once again the white balance is suuuuuuuper fucked and they way overblasted with the lighting, but this does happen when you have very pastel/lightly saturated colours (the higher percentage of white in the colour -> the brighter the light)

loona + kep1er

again a big white balance issue; this stage felt especially glowy. i could barely see any details on their dresses, even in the closeups. i also wish they had moved around some, because having the six of them just standing on platforms looks very static and it felt a bit unnatural to me. i'm trying to figure out why they brought in all those lcd tvs to be on stage with them....? especially because the stage literally has projection screens built into it. i didn't even notice they were there until my third watch. it's a very strange and unnecessary choice to me, and it also does not look very good. if they were older style crts, then i could understand there being an aesthetic choice to it, but mid 2010s tvs don't really mean anything visually yet so again. strange and confusing choice. it's not a bad stage though, just my least favourite of the three.

The Dawon/Yeonjung song sounds so good! My WJSN knowledge has grown so much after Queendom 2, and this will be my first comeback as someone who cares about the group, not just someone who’s curious about their music. I’m excited!

Queendom 2 FINAL Performances Review

the previews were enough to tell me that this will be an underwhelming finale, and unfortunately, i was right. for the most part, i can't say i really enjoyed any of the original songs. now, what's the point of becoming Queens of K-pop when, your talents and skills aside, you can't make a banger K-pop record?

what's going on with the titles btw? this is what caught my attention first-hand. Red Sun is a Brave Girls song, performed literally last week, Whistle is a Blackpink song, WJSN's song also involves a whistle in the production, Pose is a Red Velvet song, Kepler performed The Boys last week so their song is called The Girls, like???

Hyolyn: she has consistently served throughout this show, so i was disappointed the most. with the preview i was honestly worried it would get 'ethnic hip' again, but those aspects were minimal. the sonic direction of the song i didn't dig at all. The message was so unique ya'll 🙄. The dancing was limited, and i surprisingly noticed her live vocals were weak, maybe her condition was not good (the full episode might have addressed this). The feature, however, i have to acknowledge good rapping when i see it.

VIVIZ: this song i did get to hear on spotify, and i liked the vibes, it was not intense as a final song should be, its relaxed, it felt like it should be played in a cafe. this is the kind of sound that will suit viviz in the future. for staging they went fairy-tale but the magic and majesty wasn't there, rather it gave the look of a middle school play lol. why simple monochrome dresses? didnt get the storyline this time either.

Brave Girls: I guess they hadn't played their Summer Concept straight up till this point, i have to give them that. The song was generic Brave Girls summer song, but they are good at this. I really liked the simple tie-dyed outfit, the open hair flowing in the wind, the bare feet, they looked pretty. at least i had some fun.

WJSN: the song has some things going for it. it gives a little mystical, a little fantasy, before it hits the chorus and i think im listening to 18 girl group songs at once. I thought they'd do more for the stage. the intro choreo was cool, i felt like i was watching the summoning rites to some goddess lol. Seola gave. At this performance i got tired of the lift thing, what impact does it have if everyone's doing the same thing.

LOONA: the point they were trying to make, i respect that. girl groups strut and wear black and call themselves 'badass' all day. but rarely actually get to display the sheer power that boy group releases have. if anybody should start that change it should be, miss 'Cherry Bomb cover'. that being said, i dont like NCT 😭. if i keep my personal preferences aside, i think they gave the chaos and the energy they had in mind. big takeaway from this show: i was actually not a Yves stan, and i thought her being thrusted at the front of every release was unjustified. but now i understand her role in leadership, how much of a talented dancer she is, her charisma could cut glass.

Kep1er: i have heard this song before, and god knows, i will hear it again 😓. realization: this group is just Youngeun, hikaru and dayeon. over and over, it's just the three of them my eyes keep following. its their insane stage presence that will set them apart from the competitors going forward.

my ranking: WJSN > Brave Girls > LOONA > VIVIZ > Kep1er > Hyolyn

Opinion on Final Ranking:

I was a bit shocked when i heard WJSN won. Going into the show WJSN was almost K-pop folklore to me, but i dont think they exhibited anything extraordinary in this show.

but that was actually no one lol, i suppose my expectations were too high. apart from Hyolyn, i couldn't really picture anyone else winning, and Hyolyn's loss at the later part of the competition is justified in my perspective. So im not mad.

i wasn't expecting LOONA to win based on the results of the previous rounds. but them losing by one rank, that too because of the first round obviously stings, more so as an orbit. God just really hates them, huh

VIVIZ went above Hyolyn?? How did that happen?

All of that celebration over Brave Girls winning 1st place-

i feel really bad for Kep1er. time and time again ive said competing with experienced artists is not fair on them. they came out of it just looking bad. i hope this didnt hurt their confidence personally, especially since they just come out of a demanding debut battle.

Queendom 2: FANtastic Queendom Review

some ppl interpreted this round simply as ‘fan-favorite/recommended by fans’. others made the stage centered around the fans as a display of gratitude. imo both routes are not incorrect as long as the actual performance is something memorable. 

i got surprisingly introspective as the round went on, it made me think about the unique relationship between any fandom and their artist. Yes it can be quite surface-level, but sometimes i feel something genuine, and i can’t place whether its my imagination. There is more give-and-take than we realize. We need our idols as much as our idols need us. 

Hyolyn: her Position Unit performances didn’t do it for me, and in the preview i saw summer concept again and neon, which turned me off. but the full thing i rather enjoyed. see sea is an actual vibe. she was back in her element with her own song, her signature stage presence was overflowing. adding the Street Woman Fighter dancer and incorporating that storyline was so cute.

VIVIZ: okay maybe bop bop isnt too bad of a song. the queen bee concept was fun, once again i enjoyed it more than anticipated. but in every performance their weak vocals becomes a glaring issue, they just don’t sound that good. 

Brave Girls: now ppl are not going to like me for this. I can imagine how disheartening it is to work for years with no recognition or progress, how terrifying it is to stand at the edge of losing your career, it can be hard to forget. but from where i see it, it seems like they earned this first place by emotionally manipulating ppl to pity them. legit display it on a projector?? this performance i felt like took ‘FANtastic’ a bit too far. the song in particular... idk about the lyrics ‘cause they kept saying the lyrics were very moving. but i didnt feel anything when i heard it. it was your average Brave Girls performance; light on dance, vocal heavy, cluttered in terms of stage direction. the glass heel plot i didnt get. i didnt like the outfits maybe this is where its coming from. 

WJSN: the outfits were so pretty!! THE PURPLE!!! the sequins!! i had acknowledged their visuals, but this performance i couldn’t look away. I am not aware of who Miss Bona is but she is GORGEOUS. WJSN really has a discography. they could really just pull out a B-side to set a performance of this grand of a scale. the drama, the effects, i loved all of it. this is the kind of thing i was expecting from WJSN this competition. 

LOONA: this is where i started getting emotional. Bc when they talk about orbits i actually understand. I know how far and wide orbits have reached to get loona’s name out there in the blackout, this insane cult following might truly be the only reason they are still here.

Of course it had to be Butterfly, what else could have it been? Butterfly is a song which has so much history and sentiment attached to it. To me it represents LOONA at their best, at transcendent, their legacy. The lost potential, their tragedy. I still hear ppl in kpop community talk about it, the title with no wins, the last song before they plunged into darkness for an year. This song represents the hope orbits held on to in that time that we will hear from them again. The little montage made me feel so proud. it hit me: oh my god. They didnt disband. They are still here. They are on an mnet survival show, with more exposure than they ever had. And im so glad. 🥺

As for the actual performance i wasn’t quite satisfied. I love the respect they showed to the original, but then changed the choreo. The original choreo was perfect, she was iconic, she was everything. Unfortunately Butterfly is not a song that supports a good vocal performance. Not a fan of the outfits. I think ive seen every Butterfly stage ever and ive seen ones that hit harder.

Kep1er: im not even that familiar with 2nd gen, but i have to say it: they dont make music like this anymore. first up everyone looked so pretty in black??? Xiaoting with her wavy red hair??💯 moving to the actual stage: the witches in the dark forest…? What does that have to do with anything? To think of it, kep1er vocal weakness has been on display on this show since day 1 😬. I should have felt much more cool and badassery than i actually did. The dance cover on weekly idol was giving more imo. But Youngeun center and that head tilt, iconic.The biggest win for Kep1er is me begrudgingly respecting Youngeun, yes she was born for this i suppose.

Ranking: WJSN > Hyolyn > Kep1er > LOONA > VIVIZ > Brave Girls
