Woodburn's possible homeless crisis
Tumblr media
Hey you all, for my social change blog I decided to talk about the homeless crisis going on in my hometown, Woodburn, OR. While going through an article from Katu2 abc, it explains that homelessness started in Woodburn because of being in the middle of the two largest cities in Oregon. As the homeless population started to increase in both cities, Salem and Portland started taking action to push on the homeless population off the cities. Because of this, there’s big concern in the Woodburn community because they’re going to have to go somewhere, and since Woodburn is in the middle, we could be a place for them to come.
Woodburn Police Chief Jim Ferraris has been of great help to understand the homeless crisis Woodburn might face. He spent 28 years with the Portland Police Bureau. He also served as deputy chief of Salem police department. He is experienced in both cities, Portland and Salem, and knows the homeless population has spread to the suburbs.
Reporters from Katu2 have been investigating the problem. They visited Woodburn to analyze and interview people from around, Police Ferraris being one of them. While walking around in Woodburn during the daylight hours, they were not able to see anyone living on the streets . Deputy Ferraris says they’re around, just hidden.
As someone who lived in Woodburn, I understand what deputy Ferraris said. I’m a runner and I loved to go outside a lot. When I would go on my morning runs I would very rarely see a homeless person, but that would change a lot at night. When running around town after 8 pm, I would see homeless people come out to the streets. It’s crazy to think it’s like that but as someone who has seen it, trust me, it’s real, and it should be a matter for everyone so we can be aware of what’s going on in our community. Not just in Woodburn but in a lot of cities. We all care about the environment where we live and knowing we can do something to prevent that environment from changing is vital. Police Ferraris explains he pushed for a new ordinance that started to have effect Jan 27. It bans camping on city rights of way. He tells us that Woodurn is not just trying to sweep the issue away, they have learned from the failed efforts from other cities and they are also trying to help homeless people to change their luck by providing them with social services, hoping they can guide them. Woodburn is partnering with a non-profit organization called Love Inc, that provides shelter to homeless people. Deputy Ferraris hopes they can take the help, so they don’t have to cite them with a $250 fine. The Woodburn community says it’s a tough situation, and everyone is concerned about it because we are dealing with people who are down on their luck. I agree and share the same empathy as my community. I want to spread awareness about a possible crisis and what we can do to help these people in need.

There are innovative varieties of urns made of wood for pets and owner. If you wish to add specific detail to the urns then you should go for engraved urns for ashes. You can easily locate each of the aforementioned pet urns from the wide collection available at Divinity Urns.

"Coquille" Coming back from San Jose a few years ago we drove 101 up the Oregon coast. The southern coast area is home to lots of Myrtlewood and Big Leaf Maple and having just attended our first AAW symposium we were obliged to stop and check the offerings of the numerous wood purveyors along the way. I picked up this piece of maple burl and recently got around to turning it. It proved to a rather spectacular piece of timber and as is often the case there was a good sized spot of punky, hard to turn cleanly material. I soaked the whole thing in lacquer to help firm it up and it seems to have worked. I asked Karen about filling the voids and she said to just leave them. Proved to be a good decision. Lots of pictures but every surface has something to show. Final finish with wipe-on satin poly and buffed. 152mm x 190m (6" x 7-1/2") Thank you for looking!! #patandkarenmiller #arborsongarts #woodart #yakimaartists #woodturning #woodurn #mapleburl #coosbay

STAYS WITH STYLE | A Romantic Weekend Retreat in the Shropshire Hills
Where did we go?
Rowan Lodge (sleeps 2) Hope Bagot, Ludlow, Shropshire Priced from £58.85 per night Glamping Hub
We loved the soft furnishing and decor throughout
Our Visit
As we neared our destination we ascended high up into the hills, eventually disappearing into a cloud, with dimly visible sheep marking the common either side of us. Clee Hill is home to one of the highest settlements in the England and although the cottage was easy to find, it felt like we were miles from anywhere thanks to the private woodland setting of the cottage. In fact there’s 45 acres of woodland here that guests are free to explore, and as we drove slowly down the winding track through the woods, a feeling of calm descended.
On arrival we were met by friendly Fern who walked us over to the cottage and gave us the lowdown on using the woodurner and central heating. First impressions were good and the cottage felt spacious and yet cosy. A quick nose around the kitchen confirmed it had everything we needed to make our evening meal and we quickly settled in and cracked open the wine.
The bedroom was lovely with gorgeous bedding. The soft fluffy robes laid out for us were a lovely touch and the bedroom was very well appointed. The double bed was comfortable, and with both the heating and wood burner on, the cottage quickly heated up. In fact the living room got so warm that despite the freezing cold night, we ended up standing out on our private decked area hugging and looking up at the stars whilst we cooled down.
If it’s a romantic break you’re looking for then Rowan Cottage is definitely a good choice!
The views from our cottage were beautiful and expansive, and we enjoyed a particularly spectacular sunset while we were there. Although it was too chilly to sit out on the decking, in the summer, I can imagine it would provide the perfect way to while away an evening in peaceful and pretty surroundings.

Out and About
I’d never visited Ludlow before but knew of the region due to it’s status as a mecca for foodies and for it’s proximity to the Shropshire Hills. We had intended to go walking in the hills, but ended up spending a relaxed afternoon mooching around the streets of Ludlow and visiting the castle.
With an entry fee of just £5 per adult, Ludlow Castle is excellent value for money and well worth a visit.
Venture across the river after you visit the castle to take in the beautiful sight of the River Teme, and if you’ve still got energy to burn, head up the wooded hills to Whitcliffe Common for a lovely short woodland walk and views back across the river towards the castle.

On the way home we took a detour and stopped off at Ironbridge, somewhere I’ve been wanting to go back to for years. The plan was to go and see the world heritage site and spend the rest of the afternoon at Blist Hill Victorian Town, sadly both were shut! Blist Hill is shut on a Monday and Ironbridge is undergoing lengthy repairs so none of the bridge was visible and it was a bit like a Ghost Town! We did stop for a fabulous lunch though at the Tea Emporium which is well worth a visit.
The Verdict
The Rowan Lodge accommodation that we stayed in was superb. Furnished to a very high standard, it contained everything we needed for a really comfortable stay and the big corner sofa and wood burning stove made the cottage perfect for cosying up in at the end of the day.
Having photographed some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve ever seen, visiting the castle, ambling around Ironbridge and walking at Whitcliffe common, I can’t recommend the location highly enough. Clee Hill itself is lovely with sheep freely roaming, and despite the secluded location, there’s a decent shop a few minutes drive away well stocked with any essentials you might have forgotten.
Final Thoughts
We loved our stay and would love to return in the summer to give us chance to spend more time outdoors and exploring the woodland. This is a super cottage that offers exceptional value for money and is ideal for a romantic getaway whatever the weather. We booked our stay with Glamping Hub which cost £58.85 per night.

Wooden urns are nowdays getting popular because they are made so to correlate with the personality of the departed souls. While some might be in the form of simple but attractive wooden boxes, some might be molded in the shapes of your pets’ paw and even bodies.
