Consider writing short stories in the genre you prefer and submitting them to literary magazines. You can get them published and even receive payment for them. This helps build your bio when you decide to reach out to agents to publish your manuscript. You can even write stories about characters in your manuscript that you wish to later publish to show agents that you published stories with these characters in it; it means people will want to read your novel to see these characters again when you do get the manuscript published.
