Nightober #2 - Now (for ep150 The Birthday of Lee Marvin)
[ID: a grayscale wtnv fanart of Carlos excitedly holding up a table clock opened to show that it has gears again. The background is filled with a thick teal, all-caps text of his shout "Cecil holy fuck." End ID]

once again thinking about cecil from the miniature city under lane five of the desert flower bowling alley and arcade fun complex and weeping softly on the floor. he sounds so tired. so small. so defeated. soooo. so. also the way he says "it leaves me uneasy" and "he was beautiful" ... you know.

So I recently got into WTNV
I know I’m about a decade behind, sorry. For some reason, my brain really latched on to the perpetually 30 Lee Marvin. This only got more intense after listening to episode 146 and now a fanfic is brewing. Which is why I started to think about what he would look like. If you have your own image of Lee Marvin that you’re attached to, don't click below. 💜
When you Google Lee Marvin, you get the classic image of him, white haired and grizzled at the height of his fame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the Lee Marvin of Night Vale is 30. In our universe, Lee Marvin would have his one and only 30th birthday on February 19th, 1954. Assuming the Lee Marvin of Night Vale directly correlates with ours, he probably looks a lot like this.
Tumblr media
Lee Marvin as Chino in The Wild One (1953)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lee Marvin as Meatball in The Caine Mutiny (1954)
Tumblr media
Lee Marvin as Officer Shaughnessy in Gorilla At Large (1954)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lee Marvin as Mr. Gregory in Shack out on 101 (1955)
I'm not totally sure what the point of this post is except to share my brain worm. If you made it this far, thank you.
Thanks to @fuckyeahleemarvin-blog for including dates on their collection to make finding these a little easier.

I often think with media that's really long running there's can be a huge drop in quality as time goes on, as creators run out of ideas and formats get repetitive. I've been listening to wtnv from the very beginning but by bit over the last year, and it's crazy to me that the episodes are like.. Still just as good as they were at the beginning. This podcast has seen just absolutely no drop in quality. Every now and then it'll answer a question or solve a mystery from 150 episodes back, and I have to remind myself how much time would have passed irl between that old episode and this one. Anyways basically I'm having a good time with it.

To anyone reading this, I highly recommend the Monk & Robot series by Becky Chambers. I just finished reading the second one and it’s making me feel the shrimp emotions. It feels like when you look out at a field of fireflies or perhaps the ocean on a quiet night, mixed with some of the same emotions I feel when I relisten to the wtnv pilot. It’s so good. Go pick the two books up from your local library if you can, they’re like 150 pages each, the audiobooks are like 3-4 hours long (and the narrator, Em Grosland, is a great fit), so it’s not a big time investment. They are so worth a read.

I really loved WTNV way back when, but I fell off of it pretty early on and in the back of my mind I always wanted to get back on, but there were so many episodes that it was daunting, and now there's over 150 and counting.
But now that's not an excuse anymore because 1) I binged four forty-episode seasons of The Magnus Archives before the fifth came out, and 2) I've been steadily working my way through all of Campaign 2 of Critical Role, which is 141 episodes that average about 4 hours each.
...
I'm coming Cecil I just gotta finish up with the Mighty Nein first.

Oh my GOD they have a KID?!?!?
Oh my god, based on the timeline, that means
Cecil forgot their KID!?!??!
Oh shit that whole bit feels so much worse now
Bonus note of this is staying/stayed in my drafts until I know if Esteban actually gets mentioned in the main podcast, bc if this bonus is the best way for me pretend I get to be a part of a live show then damn it I'm not going to post about the secret

there's absolutely no reason to be a tool about what podcasts people do or don't listen to, dude. trying to push nightdale or whatever it's called by denigrating everything else is a real dick move and a good way to turn people off of it instead
LMAO okay my posting was more me joking cause I was putting on the "crotchety old fan" bit but Jesus christ okay, go off I guess? But I'll take It seriously if you want me to.
Because I truly do not care about what you or anyone else listens to if it makes you happy. Seriously, if you don't like a podcast that's fine. Don't listen. I've listened to maybe 150 different audio dramas at this point and I can say some are not my cup of tea. And not listening or finishing is okay. So if you don't read the rest of the post, at least know I'm not trying to force you to listen to Welcome to Night Vale or any podcast. Listen to what makes you happy.
What I do care about, however, is the very mild growing animosity towards Welcome to Night Vale (and other podcasts) by other, newer podcast fans. I've been around since 2014, I've seen the community grow and expand. But there is this competition about which is the best or how newer podcasts have defined LGBTQ representation or things of such nature.
And it irks me because Welcome to Night Vale is literally the foundation of a whole medium. Sure there were precursors but for modern internet audio dramas I really need people to understand that The Magnus Archives and others take a lot of inspiration from wtnv. They would not be around without it. Wtnv literally had LGBTQ representation the first episode, something not in other audio dramas at the time. And their LGBTQ representation was voiced by a gay, HIV+ man.
Sure, it was a surrealist comedy horror (emphasis on the comedy) but it set a standard of individually produced works with not a large production value and freedom to tell stories. That is huge. It opened people to tell stories that wouldn't be told otherwise. No publisher or executive producer breathing down the neck of a writer to tell a story to appeal to common sensibilities. As long as you had a microphone, some writing skills, and a few bucks a month to publish your podcast, you could tell your story.
You don't need to listen to wtnv, and I'm not bashing other podcasts (they are amazing). But what you need to do is understand that wtnv defined the whole modern genre of audio dramas and give it some respect.

Pinned post time!!
This will be updated but :) probably a good idea to start it now lol
About our system:
Heyo! We are the Sunny Seas System!!!
We collectively go by the name Noid/Solenoid, but anybody irl might know us by the name of River!
You can always ask our pronouns, but our favourites are weird neos, Ey/Em, Ae/Aer and Err/Errs are personal favourites rn!
Our current headcount is 150+, and we are a self diagnosed polyfragmented DID system!
We are bodily 15!
We have other neurodivergencies and some sort of physical disability.
We are self diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, and are searching for diagnosis for these! We are also suspecting Bipolar disorder, BPD, and NPD.
Dni:
Supporters of the idea that all narcissists are abusive are not welcome.
Neo/xeno haters are not welcome
People who think self diagnosed systems arent “real” systems!

REC: Kakos Industries
“At Kakos Industries, we help our clients to Do Evil Better.” Corin Deeth III has just been appointed CEO; as such, he is contractually obligated to narrate the monthly announcements keeping YOU, shareholder, in the loop on all of the goings-on at the infamous Kakos Industries. (x)
150+ episodes / usually 20-35mins, varies
first off, the creator and narrator for this series — Conrad Miszuk — is just so charismatic even though he’s playing a somewhat awkward character. i love his voice and i think he does an amazing job of portraying someone who has been thrown into a position of immense power without true ambition, scrambling to maintain a certain image and juggle an endless number of obscure, even absurd responsibilities.
the other characters who appear from time to time are also just exceptionally fun. ymmv per character, of course. they’re all very distinct and usually unreasonable, in a sitcom sort of way. but i find most if not all of them quite charming and i think, most importantly, that they all seem to bounce off of each other really well when placed in the same scene.
even when other characters aren’t present, the format of the show is really strong. the announcements are divided into segments, which allows for frequent callbacks to earlier episodes as well as providing a platform for new comedic concepts. for example, Kakos’ seemingly infinite number of hyperspecific (or frustratingly vague) departments is one of the core threads of humor in the series. Corin might mention some of the earlier established departments, or he might introduce something totally new, suited to the episode’s self-contained plot. this is just one example; there are plenty of running gags that give this show a unique personality.
this is one of the longest-running audio dramas that i’ve listened to (2014!) and i’m stunned that i don’t see it rec’d more often. i guess i get that the listener pool may be a little smaller than average — the show is full of raunchy sex jokes and sometimes quite dark humor, so it’s definitely best for a mature audience. (the early episodes especially are not always great listening for the sex-averse among us.) but i think it’s really special and definitely on par with legends like WTNV.
if you listen from the beginning, i must warn that sound design is still getting its footing in earlier episodes — but it improves and evolves drastically over time. if you like the concept, i definitely recommend sticking it out.
overall, i think Kakos makes really creative use of the radio show format and has a lovely rapport with its fans. new eps are something i look forward to every single month without fail.

WTNV quick rundown - 66 - worms...
Featuring the voice of Mara Wilson as The Faceless Old Woman.
We all lie dreamily upon damp earth spotting clouds shaped like animals we have yet to invent. Welcome to Night Vale.
NV is suffering from an infestation of worms, as it did 12 years ago. They're doing all of the 'usual worm things': flying around and dropping trees onto cars and houses, spitting venom as well as eating stray cats and then leaving large, mewling pellets all about town. They've completely enveloped the Rec Center annex, which iwas holding a Continuing Education Course: Counter-Terrorism Techniques for Beginner.
City Council, initially classifying the crisis on a warning scale as 'worms...' updates it to 'Worms!!' which isn't as bad as 'WORMS' but has the potential to be as destructive as the WORMS! (and twice underlined) outbreak of 1997.
The SSP are too busy with the worms to deal with trying to find Hiram or the FOW, who are still at large. Cecil recounts in third person how they have tried to harm Dana several times, resulting in him being puppetted into her helping her. He continues, in third person, to express how he still believes she bought him in the aunction and has been using him to help her without asking. 'Frank Chen' says he saw Hiram flying far away so Hiram is absolutely not still in NV. Eventually the worms are beaten back by the SSP armed with flamethrowers.
Cecil however, has been distracted from the worms problem due to really wanting to see Carlos. He laments openly about how it's weird that people can't go into the dog park and openly admits he wants to try and break into it so he can go and visit Carlos.
The FOW appears in Cecil's radio booth and seems eager to both absolve herself and Hiram and to get Cecil out of NV so he won't save Dana. She disguises this as wanting to help and tells him how he will have a dream from which he will wake and be told how to get into the dog park.
He then receives a black envelop from Station Management with a glyph on it which scares him into thinking he's in trouble for questioning the dog park being forbidden. He instantly apologises for doing so, but Station Management tells him that he misread the glyph. The glyph on his envelop is the abbreviation for human resources, who have approved his vacation. They then show him the actual glyph which means what he thought the first one meant and he falls unconscious for 'some time'. During which he receives the message about getting into the dog park as foretold by the FOW.
Weather: "Little Black Star" by Hurray for the Riff Raff http://hurrayfortheriffraff.com
After years of trying, NV is finally allowed to have a Book Club. It will be run by Tamika Flynn at Patty's Hardware & Discount Pastries (“Shop at Patty’s! They’ll never suspect a thing!,” Patty shouts in the looped recording playing from her perpetually squirming animatronic statue out front of her flagship store) Tuesdays from 2-4 pm.
Spring League tryouts are being held from 10am to 2pm 'next Saturday' with volunteer coaches Betty Lucero and Lusia Tereshchenko. There is a joke here hinting at the ridiculous idea of assigning kids into teams based purely on their dispositions which directly parodies the house sorting mechanic in the HP series. Coach Tereshchenko died over 150 years ago and is now a ghost.
Craigslist in NV apparently just sells your things to random people without your consent. Citizens by the name of Denise Esposito, Sally Jansen, Mario Landis and Pedro Reyna are mentioned.
It seems that Cecil did indeed get the voicemails and describes Kevin vaguely as a 'colleague? acquaintance? nemesis?'.
Cecil expresses that sometimes he becomes weary of NV itself, likely because of events that put him in danger or take over him to help others and other such things which leave him in constant danger and anxiety.
I'll be back. Whenever. Refreshed. You'll know when. It'll be when you hear my voice again. Stay tuned next for… I don’t know. Anyway, time for vacation! Good night, Night Vale. [sound of headphones coming off; maybe a mic bump] [calling off mic; leaving the studio] GOOD NIGHT! Woo hoo!
Proverb: When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true, but - because of distance - not for millions of years.

this last month I binged TMA as a long time WTNV fan and my good friend Marta binged WTNV as a TMA fan and I think the funniest part of it was that I was like “this is so cool but what do you mean I need to wait 150+ episodes before homosexuals happen” and she was like “WHAT DO YOU MEAN SOME OF THE MYSTERIES WERE NEVER SOLVED”, which speaks greatly about our different backgrounds

after listening to ~150 episodes of TMA and being a casual tma fandom enjoyer for years, I sure was not ready for Cecil to announce he's fallen in love with the newly arrived Carlos in the first 6mins of the pilot episode of WTNV.
