personality: 

Prince Fogado’s many things, but by far the most common one you’ll hear is that of his friendly, free-spirited demeanor. There isn’t much that seems to shake his perpetual good mood, and he’s in the business of making said mood as contagious as possible to those that surround him, whether through his words or through throwing constant parties and celebrations. He’s described as a warm, outstanding person who makes new friends as easily as the sun rises. It’s quite the descriptor to live up to, but Fogado seemingly does it with ease; it helps that he has a great deal of love for both his people and his family. He’s not one to throw his title around, preferring to be treated as an equal by all rather than someone of his status, to the point where he forgets—or deliberately forgoes—most formalities that involve himself.

He values sincerity, and this is reflected in his words. While compliments and flirtations come easily to him, there’s never usually any hidden motives or falsity behind them. He says what he believes, but won’t turn to false flattery or exaggerations (even in spite of those that clearly seek it from him). He prefers to take people at face value, which perhaps makes him somewhat hypocritical, considering that he’ll often rely on subterfuge to achieve his own goals. To that end, he’s clever, calculating, and an excellent actor, though this talent is predominantly reserved for seeking out information that would aid his sister and by extension, his country. 

The ability to put up a ruse so easily works to his detriment, too; much of his easy-going personality that he’s known for is just that—a façade to keep how hard he works and how deeply he cares hidden for the sake of not worrying others. He’d rather put up a false pretence to keep others happy rather than let any of the fear or exhaustion he might feel bleed over into anyone else. He believes it’s on him to keep positive and upbeat for everyone else’s sake, but worries so deeply about the ongoing war that he often struggles to sleep.

history / background: 

The second-born child of the queendom of Solm, Fogado lives an easy-going life in comparison to most royals; with his older sister set to inherit the throne, he can do as he pleases without being beholden to many rules or the pressures of a successor looming over him. As a boy, his father takes him on outings into the city, teaching him how to conceal his identity and blend in with the people there. He gets to know and love the citizens of Solm from an equal footing, and decides to dedicate himself to their protection. Thus he takes to wandering the country as captain of the Sentinels, a band of fighters whose purpose is to protect the weak and fight back any threats.

When Solm spies inform the Queen of the Fell Dragon’s return, both Fogado and Timerra leave the palace; Timerra to protect their country’s emblem ring, and Fogado to watch the border between Elusia and Solm, fighting back Corrupted while awaiting anyone who would claim to be the Divine One. Should he discover them, he is to bring them back to the palace.

And he does; he finds the Divine Dragon and their forces lost in the desert, offering them his help under the ruse of a simple commoner. Together they cull the Corrupted threatening a local village before Fogado brings Alear to Queen Seforia, where his identity is revealed. They reconvene with Timerra, who is in possession of Solm’s Emblem Ring, then return to the palace. 

There, they find Queen Seforia threatened by one of Elusia’s princesses along with the Four Hounds, a group loyal to the Fell Dragon; after successfully fighting them off, Fogado and Timerra formally join Alear’s army.

personality:

on the surface, this first-year student is a quiet youth who keeps to himself unless asked. the shell he crafts for others is built via careful manners and a calm disposition. and, for the most part, he crafts it in earnest. ken amada is a textbook example of someone made to grow up too fast. his level-headedness was built out of necessity and a desire to be taken seriously in the absence of others’ belief. he excels in his studies and towards the interests that matter to him most; few others’ determination can rival his own. he can handle solitude and quiet and finds a home in it in prayer. he is perceptive of both other people and animals alike. with all this, he can give off the impression of being a separate person entirely, and of someone far older than in truth.

but the most defining facet of ken amada’s character is that he is a child through and through, even if he would never admit it. he adores tokusatsu, tropey detectives, and vigilantes from comic books. his first pet and his dearest is named impulsively after fast food, and black coffee makes him sick. but ken is no more than nine years and some when his traumas compound, and a lack of belief from others towards what is perceived as childish delusions of grief distances him and forces him to mold into someone new simply to desire to survive. he has been starved of love through years of being on his own in early childhood and starved as purpose for just as long. history mars ken’s life by an irreparable tragedy of adolescence and the inability to act his age. he pushes down what he loves most in the name of others’ respect, hiding it until it bursts out of his chest, starry-eyed and passionate, and apologizing when he buries it in the earth. he undercuts his own determination by a morality built on the monologues of showstopper heroes and the mortal holders of death notes. even then, he despises being called a child and treated as lesser when he still has the face, voice, demeanor, and mind of one. he hates being pitied by those around him in the way that all “unfortunate children” are: as someone with nothing left for him and as someone with no one left to love him. and, more than any other belief, he hates the shared irresponsibility and immaturity of adults who have more power than him.

no matter what he does, ken amada is the youngest member of the persona 3 protagonist’s team, the most naïve, and the one to fall into the pitfalls of childish limits. but is that not what the rest of his life is for? indeed, four years have eroded the lining of a black-and-white morality, though they have hardly touched his flights of heroism. they have not fixed all his flaws nor let him forget and flee to a childhood innocence long lost, but they have given him a second chance to see life for what it is, and to accept what made it worth living so many years before. amada can only hope in that childish, starry-eyed view of the world that that outlook is the kind that would make past ghosts proud.

it’s late at night. you’re a child, and you and your mom are laughing. there’s a little cage in a cardboard box that’s large in your arms, and there’s a hamster chittering inside. you race your mom to the front door and reach it first, taking the brunt of the impact for running side-first. but you’re laughing, and your mom is, too, and it all drifts away. you cook hamburgers over the countertop with her, and you end the day happy. it could be the two of you and your newfound friend forever, and you would never mind. this is a memory you’ll never forget.

it’s late at night. your name is ken amada, and you are alone in the remnants of the living room. the full face of the moon leers overhead and drips a sickly glow. the torn-out page of the calendar reads: the 4th of october, 2007. your mother’s blood is on the corner. a twice-made shadow looms over her, dissipates into the light, and the screams of strangers fade in the flight of a murderer. you’re the only one left in the rubble. your mother is dead. you remember the date and the hour and the picture. the shadows of the clouds engulf you. this is a memory you can never forget.

in the morning, they tell you she died in a car accident. but you know better. stretches of the world shrink between your fingertips. you go to school in the same breath, and the world there weeps for you. then the world buries the memory of your mom and carries on, leaving her to rot and you to sink in the smell of it. you keep going to school. someone reaches out for you and hamburger and gives you a place they call home. people pay for you. people pray for you. people cry. and you dry your tears in your fists and thank them for their kindness, and you hide away your memories.

you and hamburger are alone for two years. you pray at the local shrine every day for two years, and you think of your mom there with you. breaks go by, and you return to the dorms all alone. in the middle of the afternoon, you’re moved to another dorm because the adults need to fix your loneliness for you. he has “potential”, you overhear, but it’s not as though you’ll use it anyways. you’ll only spend your life in her memory.

in the middle of the afternoon, it turns out that this potential is in your favor. it’s a hot day at the end of summer vacation, and you’re at the mall strip to buy groceries and cool off. you hear a famed student from your new living quarters talk to a stranger, and that’s when you hear something strange. your heart catches in your breath. you’re trapped under the heat and the blood left by your bones as they talk of a memory from two years ago. the stranger wants to forget. the stranger knows your dormmate. the stranger has…

in the evening, you force your way into the dorm’s operations. they can’t keep you away by the limits of sleep and information anymore. and the stranger follows you back. you tail him sometimes, and you learn who he is. you train and you train and you train. you remember her memory until it’s all that you have left, until it’s her memory and your mission in your hands, and there’s nothing for you after that.

it’s the dark hour, on the 25th hour of another full moon. the page of the dorm calendar reads: the 4th of october, 2009. you tell shinjiro aragaki to meet you on the other side of the island, and he follows. you pray to your mom, and you find her watching over you. you point your longspear at him, and you tell him you’ll kill him. your mission for revenge is at an end. your mom’s memory won’t be forgotten.

it’s the 4th of october, 2009. aragaki dies because of you, but not by your hand. he dies in his friend’s arms, surrounded by people who cry for him when he’s gone. you’re held back from his body in a hug, and you end up crying, too. your mission for revenge is at an end because there’s no one left to fulfill it. you live on anyway, and the memory of this night does, too.

this is all i’ve been living for. what was even the point?

you never get an answer. or your memory says otherwise. he tells you to live for yourself. you spend the next years trying to live up to his words. you pray, and you train, and you remember. you help save the world while you’re at it. you stay with hamburger, with koromaru, and with everyone else. you keep your memories close. and, in spite of everything, you live on.

kala-nemi. ken’s persona, an avatar representative of his heart and soul. it is most commonly drawn out through the use of an evoker. it negates attacks with an affinity to light, but is weak to attacks with an affinity to darkness. it works best as a healer and as support, using both high-healing and high-damaging skills and reinforcing them with a passive ability to restore some of its depleted resources. kala-nemi has access to the following abilities and groups of abilities:

ziodyne. part of a line of spells. deals heavy electricity-aspected damage to a single target. additionally has a chance of electrocuting, or shocking, the target.

vile assault. deals incredible physical damage to a single target, and will further damage a target that has already been knocked down. causes recoil damage upon use.

kouha spells: kougaon and makougaon. a line of spells dealing heavy light-aspected damage. kougaon affects a single target, and makougaon affects multiple.

mahamaon. coin flip (50% chance) to decide whether a target is killed. we will basically never be using this in group.

samarecarm and mediarahan. healing spells. samarecarm revives a single target from unconsciousness or the brink of death and heals them in full. mediarahan heals ken’s entire party in full.

various supportive buffs.

makarakarn and tetrakarn. creates a small barrier around a single target that negates a single magical or physical attack respectively.

heat riser. temporarily enhances the strength, defense, accuracy, and agility of a single target.

dekaja. negates all enhancements towards multiple targets.

spirit restore. a passive selfish buff. continuously restores mana while ken is engaged in battle.

theurgies. two powerful abilities that harness spirit and emotions accumulated in battle. (like… limit breaks for persona 3.) ken’s abilities accumulate faster in times of desperation, after being exhausted by using multiple persona abilities without recovering.

divine retribution. deals heavy light-aspected damage to one enemy, ignoring any resistances.

Wow :’) it’s been a while since I last posted. A lot of it has been school bombarding me, but my mental health has taken a liiiiitle bit of a nose dive as well- that’s okay though I’m working on it.

In honor of Pi Day (!!!) and MIT decisions date I want to reflect some on my experience as an adMIT. I know I haven’t made it to MIT yet, but I’m in a weird transition period that’s hard to describe with words but not quite ineffable.

The impetus to post was a discussion on the MIT ‘27 discord server (shoutout to MIT for being awesome and with the times) on the digits of pi. Now when I first truly had to be accustomed to pi it was sophomore year precalc. Covid times. So suffice to say, even though I tried my best to stay motivated and retain all knowledge possible, the digits of pi were not exactly my top priority, especially being able to use calculators on exams. Even now, although I obviously know 3.14 I would be hard pressed to name any more. I always felt too nerdy compared to others at my school, but now in a school full of geniuses, I don’t feel nerdy enough. It’s almost risible, how could I feel incompetent just because I don’t know enough digits of pi?

I know that MIT chooses it’s alumni extremely carefully, I mean when you are MIT you have access to the best students *in the world*. Additionally, MIT has some of the best graduation rates so I am well aware their selection process is extremely fine-tuned and successful. But, I still feel like an odd-one out. I didn’t lie on my application, didn’t exaggerate in my interview, I was simply myself. But somehow, even though I am being told I was a fit, I don’t feel enough. Even though I am valedictorian at my school and earned the highest SAT score in my class, I somehow feel behind all the kids at MIT. My hobbies lie more on the relaxed end with drawing and napping (lol) as opposed to some more useful and awesome ones like robotics some adMITs have. I know imposter syndrome is a well-documented symptom among adMITs and just that fact alone means I am in fact, not an imposter, but sometimes your feelings don’t care about facts (lol again).

I mean, I know some ‘27 adMITs who have won national science conferences and scholarships and I just feel so inadequate compared to them. I have never won a national, or even regional competition for something. Even though I feel totally behind my peers, I know that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Though some may not know, I was a varsity cross country runner sophomore-junior year (I quit for some logistical and mental health issues). I had hated running all of my life due to my stigma associated with it; it was an activity my parents had forced me to do (only for my well-being of course), and that meant I hated it. But 2020 summer I picked up running for my PE course, and surprisingly I was good at it and I didn’t hate it. Although the burn was real and my lungs were killing me, I enjoyed the challenge it gave me. So I decided to try out for XC and made it to varsity. I was one of the slower girls, and even though my coach told me I only had to run at a certain pace during practice, I would pair up with the faster runners and force myself to run at her pace. Of course, I didn’t go beyond what I thought was possible for myself and made sure to take care of myself, but I rapidly saw improvement. All of this to say that being around others who are more advanced than you is not a necessarily bad thing. It can give you the opportunity for faster improvement. By surrounding yourself with hard-working people you are setting yourself up to survive.

So to conclude this post, I would say my imposter syndrome is at an all time high. There are many qualifications that I feel other adMITs have that I lack - but even if this is the truth, I want to use it to my advantage and surround myself with passionate and driven people.

Moving On

Today I ran the last race of my freshman college xc season. I realized I had absolutely no motivation. There was no reason for me to run fast or give any amount of myself. I wasn't going to beat any of the seniors as a sign of my respect for then and their leadership they showed this season. I see now that if I had beat Dan, which was well within my grasp, I would have been first for the team but that doesn't matter now. As I look on the next three years it is clear God has placed this team in my hands. Something that I can use to glorify him. How will I do that. I will be first on the team which immediately garners the respect of the other runners and assures me the position of captain. The inclusion of a new coach in the mix. Even if it's P. Will be an interesting turn of events. I'm not sure what to do with that. I already have a great deal of respect for him and I think that if anyone can coach me to a national championship it's him. The only fear I have is that a transition in coaching could stunt recruiting. As it stands now we don't have enough people to field a team next year. That scares me. I think I need to decide to jump all into this thing. Currently I'm just using the team to further my own agenda but it's time to take control and stop consuming.

I realized just now that I've moved on. I'm at the point that I'm no longer bound by the past. I can be myself and find confidence in that. I wonder what she's doing right now? I hope she's moved on too. A mile for every minute we've spent together. I've run off the commitment I made to that relationship, payed the price, and moved on. I failed in that relationship. I was just taking from her. I may have been a gentleman and showed her respect but It was not respectful to entice her heart. In asking her to love me I took a part of her that her future husband will never have. Dating in it's current form is useless. Unless it's with the goal of marriage it doesn't honor either person. I really couldn't see dating someone for an extended period of time. There's a natural progression of both physical and emotional intimacy that have to happen at the same time. So I don't know where that leaves me. Dealing with a system I didn't create and almost our entire culture has bought into. I really need to learn how to communicate. Actually talk about things because people are more different then I could possibly imagine. Different societies(?) cultures come at things from completely different angles. It's selfish to assume that two people are on the same page emotionally or even psychologically.

Now let's make this note dangerous. Who are the girls here I would like to pursue? I feel like I've been here long enough to pick out a couple. I'm still in the socially handicapped freshman phase so it doesn't really matter. There's L. I've already fallen in love with the persona she portrays online but that is a dangerous place to be. I need to get to know her in real life but at this point there is no in. That's not entirely true because I think she is at least interested in who I am. Keep this open but don't stress about it. Then there's the interesting issue of V. I think she has a crush on the Facebook version of me which is funny. It's showed me how not to approach L. As for team mates they are off limits. Finally there are the two S's. The blond and the brunette. Why do I approach all relationships with girls from the perspective of marriage? Is that the only reason I'm here or is that what I've reduced women to In my mind. Simply future mates and not real people with which I can have meaningful relationships with... idk.

Why am I so disillusioned with school? I feel like classes are just a waste of my time. When you have a goal ahead of you it's hard to see meaning in pursuits that are distracting you from that. It doesn't help that none of my classes are really helping me get there. I don't really care about getting a degree from a college if it's not directly applicable to what my vocation will be. Art is so not straight forward like I would like. A business degree would be so easy. Our country is built on business. Even art is simply a commodity to be bought and sold. I'm just a machine that produces something someone else wants. Can I do anything with my life that is simply for the joy of the lord? Or will anything I do glorify him as long as I'm living my life in his service.
