Raspberry Pi 400 - First Impressions
I was a child programming on my TV with a Sinclair ZX81 followed by a ZX Spectum. Computers integrated into keyboards, which you can plug into a TV, are part of my DNA. https://yery.net/ So, given this what could I possibly resist purchasing the brand new Raspberry Pi 400! ?
Following are my initial thoughts on the hardware and using it for development with light weight.
I like it .)
Tech Specs
The Raspberry Pi 400 is, essentially an Raspberry Pi 4 housed within the keyboard. You can read much better descriptions elsewhere, but the main details from the tech specs are:
- Broadcom BCM2711 quad-core Cortex A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.8GHz 4GB LPDDR4-3200 Dual-band (2.4GHz and 5.0GHz) IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac wireless Ethernet - Bluetooth 5.0 BLE - Gigabit Ethernet - 2 x USB 3.0 - 1 x USB 2.0 ports - Horizontal 40-pin GPIO header 2 x micro HDMI ports (supports up to 4Kp60) - MicroSD card slot to operate system and data storage - 79-key compact keyboard
(full specifications are available here)
The 400 comes with an SD card of 16GB that comes that comes pre-installed with Raspbian and a plethora of applications (LibreOffice), tools for developers (Geany, Mathematica, Scratch) as well as utilities (Chromium, VLC Media Player), and games (Minecraft).
First Impressions on the Hardware
It was very easy to plug the 400 into and start it up. It's a nice device with a good collection of connectors and ports at the back. The keyboard is...ok. The device is priced at PS67 in the UK. I bought the complete kit (which includes a mouse, power supply, HDMI cable, and the official manual) for PS94. The keyboard is very good for the price, but it does feel a bit "plasticy" considering the price.
The 400 is not equipped with an audio-out. Audio is transmitted via the HDMI output. For me, this is a problem because my monitor does not have speakers. It's not a BIG problem however, it's something I hadn't thought of.
The connector for the Raspberry Pi camera module is another issue that the 400 doesn't have. This isn't a big issue for me however it could be an issue in the event that you plan to build any camera projects with the 400.
The 400 comes with a GPIO header on the back, which means that with an appropriate ribbon cable you can build electronics projects with ease. The Adafruit TCobbler Plus makes it simple to connect the 400 and breadboards to build...stuff!
The 400 boots up very quickly and is extremely capable as a general-purpose desktop computer. I've spent the majority of today browsing the internet on it, as well as installing applications as well as running docker containers and building code and it's been fast and snappy almost all the time.
Overall, I like the hardware and the form aspect. The devices can be bought by schools and code clubs to be used in their computing labs.
Developer Experience
I've been setting my Raspberry Pi 400 up, and I'm pretty impressed. My setup has included:
- Installed Chromium and installed the 1Password extension. - Installed Visual Studio Code using these instructions - Installed the VS Code Remote Containers extension so that I can make use of Docker dev containers to develop code within
Overall the setup was very simple. So simple, it's almost boring! While there were some problems, it was easy to install my Raspberry Pi 400 so that I could write code using Docker and then push my changes to Github. For instance, I'm writing this blog post in VS Code, building it using Jekyll within a Docker container.
The only problem I encountered was the ARM support for different Docker images. Because it had dependencies that did not have ARM variants and the default Ruby dev container image wouldn’t create. I used the Ruby 2.7 docker images as a starting point and copied/pasted the required parts into my Dockerfile (removing Node, Zsh Oh My Zsh and a few other). I'm not certain what failed to build and I'll need to go back and work out the issue however it's important to remember that the Rasberry Pi is ARM built, it's not all development tools have ARM builds.
After installing tools, and played aroundwith them, I've created an extremely basic Rust code (with build times comparible to my MacBook! I've written some Python 3 code that is GPIOZero built (controlling LEDs and butons) and set up a Jekyll/Ruby development container. I also updated my blog.
I own several Raspberry Pi computers (1 3, 2 and 3). Most of them are in the Model B format, but I have a few Zeros too. They all sit in a box, unopened. I've played with them, and then put them away. Part of that is because the performance hasn't been that great, but the form factor is a major factor. I feel like the Raspberry Pi 400 has enough power for casual projects and is small enough that I can leave it connected to my desk.
And on top of that...it provides me with a huge nostalgia rush using it!
In the image below, I have two instances of VS Code (both running dev containers), plus I'm browsing. It handles everything effortlessly.

'Minecraft: Education Edition' It will be Released In June.
Microsoft's official Minecraft: Education Edition will begin its life in an early access program (kind of like the original game played) in June. The idea behind this is to allow educators to give the building game a test run during summer break so that they can assess how it will integrate into their curriculums and provide feedback as they go. This will aid in the development of lesson plans.
The folks in Redmond have a few available , including the Temple of Artemis, Pyramids of Giza or Anderson Shelters that were used to shield from bombs during World War II. It'll be a free download for both OS X and Windows in a couple of months, but it will be available in beta in May with some 100 schools from 30 countries.

Minecraft shouldn't be a Clingy Thing, Mojang Says
Minecraft shouldn't ever be a clingy feeling, Mojang says
Mojang continues to monitor the success of other survival games.
Mojang asked me what the future of Minecraft was like before the latest Minecraft 1.19 (opens new tab) update was released. Agnes Larsson, game director, and Nir "Ulraf"Ulraf Vaknin the developer weren't interested in being specific about the next major update. It's no surprise that they're likely to save that for the next Minecraft Live showcase. Instead, we talked about how they're still learning from other crafters and how they're planning to "keep the magic and charm of Minecraft" for another 10 years.
Minecraft's beta launch in 2010 put survival and crafting on the map. There have been a myriad of other games for crafting, many of which are also made with voxels, but Minecraft remains the benchmark for sandbox-based creativity. It's not difficult to Mojang to become smug after wearing the crown long enough, I think that they would become solitary and source ideas only from its own players and developers.
Larsson and Vaknin both insisted they wouldn't call Minecraft superior to all the others. (I would, though. yery It doesn't risk sounding boastful coming from me). However, they do state that knowing what sets Minecraft apart means they can keep it up to date.
Larsson called it intrinsic motivation. Larsson called it intrinsic motivation.
Vaknin agreed with the assertion that Minecraft's success is due to the fact that it requires players to be self-motivated "A number of games are deviating from that because many players are looking for more direction, and that's okay."
Over the years, I've played many survival-based crafting games. I was most recently drawn to Valheim's viking craft, which I enjoyed for several months. I also loved session-based survival in Icarus and V Rising for vampire crafting for a few days. Even Valheim which was my most played game for over 100 hours, and that I helped to lobby to become our game of 2021 (opens in a new window) has not kept me coming back like Minecraft.
Vaknin said that he's kept up with the competition, too. Like me, he was interested in the way that food and hunger work in Valheim. It made me treat food as part of my gear and I was not allowed to ignore food systems or treat all food items as equal-in so many other crafting games, including Minecraft. "I am always thinking about it and pondering about what we can learn from that," he says.
Vaknin stated that V Rising has a very unique goal and boss tracking system. He also mentioned the necessity of tracking down bosses on the map in order to find them. It reminded me of the way you find the End stronghold in Minecraft with the eyes ender.
Vaknin hopes Minecraft won't chase its players even if it learns from Minecraft.
"Minecraft is really not clingy," is how he stated later in our conversation and compared it to a long-time friend who will be there for you no matter the moment you decide to go and return months later.
Vaknin spoke about a typical experience in the Minecraft community: playing a lot for a few many years ago, then returning every year depending on the mood. That's how I've treated it for years myself and I'm happy to see it's a habit that Mojang feels confident cultivating.
"So many games you play can pull you into a bit too much and then you don't want to let it end. It's incredible that Minecraft doesn't do that. It's important to me to keep that."
"One thing that has been added to our guiding principles is: you play Minecraft because you want to, not because you feel pressured to," Larsson added.
As I prepare for Minecraft version 1.20 I am glad to know that the folks in control are confident enough to stay up to date with the latest crafting and survival trends, without having to follow them.

Create the Best Minecraft House so you can Stay Safe in Style
Build the most stunning Minecraft home to be safe in style
Are you thinking of building a cabin to live in? This guide will show you how to create a Minecraft house.
It is essential to understand how to build a Minecraft home or cabin. A good home can allow you to shelter from the Creepers, other monsters of night, and offers a place to store your crafting materials and equipment. Your abode can also give you the opportunity to showcase your creative talent in Minecraft which allows you to make it as fancy as you want to and design an impressive statement piece Do you want a sprawling mansion that can't be overlooked, or an impenetrable castle that ensures no one is able to penetrate your defenses?
Get the top Minecraft texture packs for your home.
When you build a Minecraft house , you need to choose whether you're constructing for aesthetics, functionality, or somewhere between. While underground construction is a great option to save resources, the exterior of a Minecraft house isn't very appealing in the event that it's only dirt and a door. A glass wall can appear stunning however it's not built to be able to withstand any attack. Yery We have some tips and advice that will assist you in building your own Minecraft home, above or below the ground whatever your priorities.
How to build a Minecraft house, the Basics
No matter what you do to construct your Minecraft home, there are some essential things you must include. First of all it is to ensure you put plenty of torchlights around the area, since they serve two essential functions. First, they allow you to be able to see what's happening inside, which is useful if you're carving out an underground cave. Secondly, they can help keep monsters out since they typically are found in dark areas. You can decrease the risk of a monster ruining your day by placing lots of torches in and out.
The next step is to build a bed in your Minecraft home, so you can sleep through the night and wake up fresh in the security of the morning. Beds are also your spawn point in this world. If the worst happens then you'll be able to revive at home rather than at the set world spawn points. This will eliminate the hassle of getting back there.
Other essentials to consider installing are chests to store all your items including weapons, objects, etc. so that you don't have to carry the items around with you. A single chest should be enough to start, though you can increase to more storage as you advance. To make new items and improve your equipment, you'll also need to install crafting stations. Start with the furnace and the standard crafting table, then increase your options by adding more crafting options.
What should you do underground in Minecraft houses
You must dig horizontally into a hillside to build an underground Minecraft home. If the terrain isn't suitable, you can dig downwards however this can make construction more difficult. The entrance should not be too big , so build a tunnel that is at least two blocks wide and a few blocks in height. At the end of the tunnel, you can begin digging outwards in order to build your first room, then add some torches to get an understanding of the work you're doing, and then add the other basic items we described above.
You are able to continue mining in the surrounding area to discover materials, but you will need to leave the bunker. As you tunnel away from your home, make sure you have a back door and additional lighting to ensure your home is safe and free of monsters.
Minecraft house ideas for above ground
This is the kind of Minecraft house that players are familiar with as they're more visible and offer the potential to build some impressive structures. It is possible to use any type of wall material, but stone or solid matter will give you more solid foundations than wood. To begin you'll need to clear a flat space to build on, which could be as large as you want, but a dozen blocks square is a good place to start so you don't run out of space too quickly - you can expand later on if you want to.
Next, make walls around the perimeter of the building at the minimum of four blocks in height. This will give enough space for a door or windows. There are many options for the roof: you could use a flat sheet of block, stack them in an angle, or use stairs. To keep monsters from entering your home from your home, you can surround your Minecraft house with fencing. You can also use torches to protect the structure. Include all the items we've discussed previously and your homestead is now ready to go.

'Minecraft' Gets its First Live Concert
Minecraft has had its share of real-world crossovers, but there's nothing quite like this. Norway's annual The Gathering technology conference will host a live concert this evening at 9PM local (4PM Eastern). Volunteers will be mimicking the characters from Minecraft while they walk around the stage. This is not a small production. AlunaGeorge Broiler, Lemaitre and Broiler are all on hand, so you can expect lots of fun, regardless of whether you're watching real artists or their pixelated avatars.
It won't be capable of capturing the feeling of the real thing, but it could provide a more personal feeling than watching a video. yery.net Be aware that this also means that there is a limited amount of space. The organizers have stated that there should only be space for two to three thousand people So you'll need to connect to the Minecraft server as soon as you can (if you're reading this at the right the morning) to have a chance of seeing what all the excitement is about.

Look, playing Minecraft on a console is really great. It's basically the same delightful/terrifying experience from PC, albeit in the comfort of your living room. What's not to like? On consoles of the last generation there was at the very least one unintentional result of the console The world that was generated by the procedural engine of Minecraft was significantly smaller than what could be created on PC. With Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions arriving this August, that changes. Mojang, a development studio claims that it "brings vastly bigger worlds and a larger draw range than Xbox 360 Edition." Hot dog!
Of course, should the more smaller world of the last-gen Minecraft suffice (and believe us, it's quite large) the PlayStation Vita version also arrives in August. Yery Here's even better news: if you already purchased the game on PlayStation 3, you own it on Vita. Similar deals are available to those who convert from PS3/Xbox 360 versions to PS4/XB1 versions If you already own the prior version and want to upgrade to the latest version, it's just $5. This offer is only available for the first year, so make sure to upgrade to avail it at a low cost.
To make the deal more sweet To make it more appealing, games saved from the previous generation/Vita will be ported to the latest generation consoles. However, it's impossible to return them. The August edition will include all the updates to the previous-gen versions. The entire package is $20. Oh, and the creepers remain super, super creepy.
