New York City in the mid-late 1990s was a more innocent time, and one of great excitement for a downtown subculture made up of Lower Manhattan’s skateboarders, musicians, artists, actors, designers, store owners and hustlers. The rent was still relatively cheap, the blistering hot summers felt endless, and the streets that made up the Nolita, LES, and NoHo neighborhoods were bustling with life, attitude, and creativity.

This strange period makes us nostalgic for the simple freedom of meeting up to do nothing. Summer is a season to wander, party, shop, skate, dance, eat, and talk shit. In April 1994, Supreme opened on Lafayette Street and quickly became ground zero for a tight-knit crew — it was a place to hang out, work a little bit, connect with new people, and meet up before or after skate sessions.

Supreme was a skate rat clubhouse, and the crew who worked there ran the place by their own set of non-conventional rules. The staff took pride in the store as if it was an art gallery; with meticulous detail given to the folding of the merchandise on display, they enforced a strict “no touching” policy which would lead to a severe berating or dismissal from the store if violated. The music was club-level volume, the heavy scent of Nag Champa incense would cover up the smell of weed smoke in the stockroom, and non-skaters were often treated with an aloof welcome (at best). To many it was intimidating and unapproachable, which led to the cult skate store building up a fiercely loyal underground following.

For a frequently visiting Brit abroad, this skate shop and the people who hung out there, provided a welcome spot every time I was in town, much like the old Slam City Skates store in the basement of Rough Trade Records on London’s Portobello Road back home. Pre X-Games and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video games, skaters were very much considered outlaws — particularly by the security guards, office drones, and pearl-clutchers in Manhattan’s business districts that made for the best skate spots with polished ledges, smooth handrails, and marble surfaces in abundance. This group of young skaters ran the streets like their own personal playground before hitting the city’s clubs en-masse.

To this group, nothing seemed off limits and everything seemed possible. Their freedom bred positivity and creativity, with many of Supreme’s OG crew branching out into starting their own brands such as SSUR-Plus, After Midnight, aNYthing, TeamWorks, and Acapulco Gold. A young Italian photographer named Giovanni Aponte relocated from Rome in 1991 to experience and capture a genre-defining decade on film. Here, Aponte shares a selection of his images for the first time and, alongside OG Supreme staff Alex Corporan and Akira Mowatt, recounts the craziness and freedom of downtown NYC in the mid-90s.

What was your personal situation back in the mid-late ‘90s?

Giovanni Aponte (Photographer): I moved to NY in 1991, I was 27 then and had just graduated in photography from IED in Rome. Quite soon I started to work in a photo studio on the Upper West Side where I was assisting the photographer and getting to know a bit of the business. At the same time, I was working, as all the immigrant Italians did at the time, as a waiter for a few days a week to make some extra money.

Alex Corporan (ex-Supreme manager): I was in my mid-20s and in the height of my skateboarding career — all I cared about was skating all day, filming with my friends and enjoying the city’s nightlife. Making money in skateboarding on the East Coast rarely even existed back then, so I subsidised my income through modelling and the club scene before I landed a spot at Supreme. My life started to turn around from there — skateboarding was my world, but then working became my focus.

Akira Mowatt (ex-Supreme store worker/AfterMidnight owner): I was a runaway 14-year-old, so skateboarding became my chosen family. I didn’t have a place to live and didn’t eat much, but towards the late ‘90s I got a job at Supreme.

The New York skate scene was so different to anywhere else in the States and felt more similar to London than Southern California. How did it feel being an inner-city skateboarder during this era?

AC: Being an inner-city skateboarder was rebellious during the ’90s, because not only we were the derelicts of the streets but we were everything people loved to hate — a bunch of talented humans that had the key to the underground world. There were no skateparks, just the Five Boroughs all day and all night. We’d go out at night to all the giant clubs, fashion scenes, art shows and be a ball of energy that caused so much attention… no one knew what to do with us!

AM: I didn’t know much about California back then as I had recently came over from Japan, but I instantly felt the entertaining and exciting vibe of New York – the city felt so alive!

Can you describe a “typical” day in the life around this time?

AC: Go to Supreme to meet up with the crew, including one of the filmers/photographers (RB, Reda, Sammy Glucksman, or whoever was in town) and warm up in front of the store before heading downtown towards the Banks and then get our groove on from there. Once it started to get crowded we would break out, skate the Seaport and Wall Street. Make our way up to Supreme to clean up in the sink by the bathroom and grab a fresh Box Logo tee or hoody, depending on the weather. Hit up Astor Place for some more skating, 40’s and Blunts. Some of us went out to the clubs and bars and some went to get more footage in midtown after midnight, then rally back at Astor at some point for a nightcap.

AM: I mean a typical day was meet up at Astor Place, Washington Square, or Union Square then we just go skate all the way downtown to the Banks, Seaport and Battery Park. In the evenings we would head back to Astor and chill for a little before skating Midtown for the rest of the night.

Union Square, Astor Place, TSP, Ziegfeld, the Banks, etc… there seemed to be so many spots back then. What were your favourite places to skate?

GA: My favorite was definitely Astor Place, followed by Union Square which was very close to my home. The Brooklyn Banks was also a great place, but you had to watch out for people trying to steal your board!

AC: My favorite spots were of course the Brooklyn Banks and all the Midtown spots because of the smooth ledges, and all the fun stuff to hit in between.

AM: I personally liked Union Square, Astor Place, Washington Square, or Tompkins Square Park because you knew sooner or later you’re going to meet up with one of your buddies. Back then there was no cellphones, only pay phones, so we often had to make plans the night before.

How important was the Supreme store as a cultural hub?

GA: Well it was definitely the place to be if you were a skater in New York. My friend Russel Carablin [owner of SSUR-Plus/OG Supreme designer] introduced me to the guys at Supreme after the store had just opened. I was so amazed by the place and the people there, everybody was so damn cool and real. That area was becoming the centre of the new upcoming street culture. You could feel the vibe in the air… I have such beautiful memories of that time.

AC: Truthfully, Supreme was the only shop you could have really hung out at the time. Blades on Broadway was very corporate, but Supreme was our private clubhouse. Not everyone was invited, or they got vibed so hard to the point people would be bummed at us.

AM: Skate shops like Supreme were super important because they created a community for skateboarders. Back then skate shops didn’t last, especially in Manhattan.

There were other opportunities arising for your crew like modelling, acting, or starting brands of your own. What was it about that scene that created so much energy?

AC: It was our energy that attracted everyone — the “fuck you” attitude, the overall looks our crew had, and the talent of skating. We were a well-rounded bunch of individuals that just hammed-up to the camera once it was pointed at us. We were just ourselves living this lifestyle that had no label at the time, because you couldn’t control the passion we all had.

AM: Manhattan was the place to be if you’re from anywhere else, especially in the skate scene. All the top dogs came out to skate the city and if you looked good on the board you might’ve got put on one of their companies. There became a lot of opportunities for decent New York skaters.

New York is seen as a party town, but hotspots change with the weather. What bars and clubs made you feel most at home back then?

GA: The New York club and bar scene in the ’90s was absolutely great — Limelight, Danceteria, Wetlands, Palladium and Club USA were the big temples of dance, but my favorites were the smallest and more crazy ones like Nell’s, Jackie 60, Peggy Sue’s, and Elements to name a few. The club scene was a real mix of different people moving between three or four places a night, but my favorite were the “Any Given Sunday” parties at the Fun, under the Manhattan bridge.

AC: It was Spoon bar, Coney Island High on St. Marks and Max Fish when it was on Ludlow. Can’t forget Cherry Tavern as it had an awesome Jukebox and one of the few places with a decent pool table. As for clubs, anywhere that Bill Spector, Bugsy, Belinda, Carlos or Duncan had their hands on!

AM: We went to all the clubs and bars in NYC, even though I was under age (haha) but the clubs and bars never really felt too much like home for me.

Who were the loudest and most outrageous characters in the crew?

GA: The whole Supreme team was outrageously cool… I remember all the kids I met, Aaron “The Don”, CPT Alex O’Corpran, Giovanni WhatEstevez, Krooked Joey, Akira, O’, Crocodile Mealy, Thin Wolf, Jason the model, Brickface, Stukko, The Spawn — everybody had a nickname!

AC: We were the live freak show of the city and hands-down Harold Hunter was the loudest! Then there were the fighters — but only to those who tried to harm us — in the crew like Pooky, Neil, Loki ,NA, Joey, Pang, Slick Rick, and a few others. FlyGuy Peter Bici would always grab your attention, Justin Pierce would always call you out, Henie would snatch something out of your hand so fast you won’t know where he came from, and the list goes on.

AM: The whole crew was loud and outrageous!

Was this the most exciting time to be living in NYC?

GA: There was an overflow of young, cool, clever, and creative people in New York during that era… and yes, it was certainly the most exciting time!

AC: The ‘90s in NYC lands as the last of the epic, raw, untouchable, unstoppable, fearless times for life. You’re unable to replicate the experience of what was happening in New York during this time. Skateboarding, music, nightlife, art, fashion… you name it! 2000-2004 held onto that energy for a bit, but from 1990-1999 you grew up real fast and experienced shit in light speed.

AM: Late ‘90s through to the early ’00s for sure, that was definitely the most exciting time to be in New York.

Any specific fond memories from this era?

GA: I remember a night at Nell’s where Mick Jagger was going for it on the dance floor but none of the people there gave a damn about this huge celebrity as we were so into the music and the vibe.

AC: Every day was different, but the shit that went down in the back of [Supreme] during the ‘90s was priceless. The neverending antics — you name it, and it happened.

How do you think times have changed in terms of the NY skate scene and everything that surrounds it?

AC: The New York skate scene grew immensely around 2004, and instead of the ‘Rat Pack’ now there were huge posses of skateboarders everywhere. It’s awesome to see skateboarding in the city so huge now, but that original rawness has really faded away. That has to do with everything around us — 9/11 happened and that alone fucked up skating midtown and most of anything past Canal Street.

The birth of skateparks in the city was something we dreamed of when we were young because all we had was janky Mullally’s park which was hard to skate, not only because the ramps were fucked up but you had a big probability of getting jumped the minute you walked out the fence! Now there are over 30 smooth skate parks all around the Five Boroughs. Having these parks definitely played a part of not having that rawness of street skating, but overall I’m stoked on everyone in the scene.

The ‘90s were the era we started blossoming and now there are now so many companies owned by skateboarders – clothing labels, shops, board brands; and people in position to call shots within the community and the parks department. It makes me proud to be one of the people that helped pave the way to see where skateboarding is in NYC, and I will continue to support and keep our wheels turning.

AM: For one thing everyone has cell phones now so can film themselves and get clips a lot easier. I don’t think too much has changed in terms of the downtown skate scene, but now it’s a new generation making it happen.

tiny house costs

As requested: a blog on costs. (keep in mind that my micro-tiny house is on the extreme small size, 8 x 12 base trailer. Most of my estimates are calculated based on smaller sized THoWs. If you’re planning on building a much larger tiny house- closer to the 400 square foot range- your costs will necessarily be higher)

You can do a bunch of different options here. if you build your own, with your own labor, learning as you go, that cuts costs down to materials and tools, some of which you can rent. you can do it for between 10-15k (or more depending on size), less if you have a GOOD source of reclaimed materials, and you’re not pickey about style. Going this route, be sure you have someone skilled (professional) to check your electric and gas line. if it’s not installed properly, i won’t mince words: you could die. - the next category up, is having parts built by skilled laborers, while doing other parts yourself. A good base trailer (dual axle, with electric breaks) will be under $2000. Having the more skilled work, such as the gas and electric installed for you, takes out a lot of the headache. Where you live in the country will depend on the costs. Third: you can buy a pre-built tiny home that is either new or used. i would be very cautious about buying used- depending on how they were constructed, you could be inheriting problems you can’t see (leaks, structural damage, etc). I have seen them as cheap as a couple thousand dollars from people who were trying to liquidate fast when they realized the tiny house lifestyle didn’t fit their family’s needs (and they realized the tiny house wasn’t appropriate in their community- they just wanted someone to tow it away for them), to 30-40k.

Lastly, you can hire a company to design and build your house. that can be anywhere from 30000-70000, depending on your “must haves.” If you want a custom design that matches your lifestyle (which is why most of us are living tiny), talk to a few companies. Decide what things are necessary, what things would be really nice but luxuries. They will build to suit you, but the more things you can cut out, the cheaper it will be. Once you have your home, your main costs will be: a lot fee, if that applies to your situation. Me, i move my house regularly, so i have to find a place that allows a “long term” camping (like an RV for a monthly rate). If you’re planning on putting your tiny house in your back yard, then this wouldn’t apply to you. I budget up to $1000 for lot fees, and i haven’t had to use that much yet, coast to coast. that includes camping monthly in KOA parks, mobile home parks, and in limited service rural land (had water and electric). Every place I've been to so far has also included internet.

I do budget in about 100/ yeark for propane. that’s more than i use, but i don’t want to worry about running out if i need more (and that’s buying it at the most expensive prices). I run a combo of propane and electric heaters, but propane runs the water heater and my oven/stove.

I don’t have a post offfice box, i just get my mail forwarded to the campground, or a local friend no extra costs there. I do have to buy compost medium, about 3x a year, under $50, for the toilet. I have land i can compost the final results on, so i don’t have to worry about what to do with that once i’m done.

i also have to plan for my moves too: towing takes my MPG down from around 13-18 to as low as 7mpg. If you’re going cross country, that’s quite a dent. You don’t want to under-plan for diesel costs. i plan around a thousand dollars to get from the midwest to california.

I also plan another thousand dollars for nightly KOA stays (at around 80-150 a night, KOA rate) as well as food, and tourist trap type side trips, that i have a severe weakness for. I stay mostly in KOAs because they are ALL tiny house friendly and i have the membership that gives a discount, but i also stay at any small mom and pop RV campgrounds that are tiny house friendly. I love to give my money to local businesses (especially those struggling on Route 66), and many take a AAA discount.

I also pay yearly for the invaluable AAA discount. I pay a little over $100 for the AAA plus discount, that will tow me and my house up to 100 miles to a preferred shop (versus the standard that tows only like 15 miles i think?). They also have other perks like BRINGING YOU GAS IF YOU RUN OUT. seriously, if you’re getting only 7mpg, you’re buying fuel every 200 miles. there are parts of the country that there is not a station every 200 miles. Cary an extra large FULL back up. you might need it.

That’s about everything i can think of for my household expenses, that aren’t typical things you might find in a standard home. What other questions can i answer?

Hike to the top of Bartolome Island in the Galapagos

When you are traveling around the world you quickly realize that many attractions require the need for climbing of some sort (see the Bucket List of 15 Things to Climb in the World for exhausting examples). When I heard that it was 374 steps uphill to the peak of Bartolome Island in the Galapagos, I began having flashbacks of the 463 steps to the top of Florence’s Duomo.

Climbing that wasn’t pretty. It was where I learned that a 78-year-old great grandmother was in better physical shape than me. Painful. On so many levels.

But, the peak of Bartolome Island was known to have the most perfect view of the famous Pinnacle Rock. There was no way that the avid bucket lister in me would miss scaling this volcanic cone to see a unique perspective of one of the most photographed natural structures in the Galapagos Islands.

So the journey began to the land where the human population is ZERO…

We took a panga from our home on the water, Ecoventura’s Letty yacht, and disembarked on the dock of Bartolome Island where a sea lion basking in the sun greeted us. The islet, located in Sullivan Bay to the east of Santiago Island, was barren besides two small groups of visitors and a few lazy lava lizards.

The gang that I was with eagerly started to ascend the 600 meter trail, a planked walkway which protects the lunar-like landscape from human erosion.

The beginning of the hike had the slightest incline, which allowed me to enjoy the mostly brown land that looked like it was straight from an episode of Star Trek.

A variety of volcanic formations lined the trail: spatter cones, lava tubes and lava bombs.

We even made a pit stop in order to hold a large lava rock, which looked as if it would be incredibly heavy, but really weighed mere ounces.

This was looking like something straight out of a cartoon.

Continuing on, the path steepened. The smooth walkway turned into stairs and my gasping for breath increased. I knew this was coming.

I stopped to “take photos”, a disguise for getting a moment to catch my breath.

After about a half hour we reached the top. The summit not only rewarded us with a spectacular view of Pinnacle Rock, but also Daphne Major, Daphne Mindor and the rest of Santiago Island.

As always when climbing things while traveling, the view from the 114 meter summit was worth every step.It turned out to be a great addition to my list of the top things to do before you die.

Location/Facts:

Situated in the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago that lie 620 miles from the South American mainland. A province of Ecuador, it consists of 13 main islands and 6 smaller isles. It is a remote destination that is a melting pot of unique wildlife, which inspired Charles Darwin’s landmark theory of evolution following his visit in 1835. Have been called a “living museum and showcase of wildlife” it is home to wildlife species that are found nowhere else on Earth; the giant tortoise, Galapagos sea lions, Flightless Cormorant, the Waved Albatross and, of course the boobies.

Getting There:

Galapagos is reached through the country of Ecuador by flying into either the capital city of Quito or the countries largest city of Guayaquil. If you don’t plan on spending any time on the mainland, fly into Guayaquil, since it is closer to the islands and most flights from Quito to the Galapagos stop there. If you plan on doing some exploring in Ecuador prior or after your trip, go to Quito. Its famous old town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with colonial charm, bustling markets and architectural buildings. Whichever city you choose, will most likely require an overnight stay.

The Galapagos Islands has two airports, one on San Cristóbal and the other on Isla Baltra, just north of Santa Cruz. Which airport you choose will depend on how you have decided to explore the islands. The flight from Guayaquil to the islands is approximately an hour and forty-five minutes (about 40 minutes from Quito to Guayaquil). Domestic flights can be booked through TAME, Avianca or LAN.

Language(s):

Spanish is the official language in Ecuador and on the Galapagos Islands, though English is widely spoken on tours, plus in the restaurants and hotels.

Electricity:

Plug Type A/B, 110v. The voltage and socket is the same as the U.S., so there is not need for an adapter or converter.

When to Go:

Every month in the Galapagos has its highlights and the weather makes any time of the year a good time to visit, so when you go greatly depends on the type of experience you are looking to have. For example, in March on San Cristobal and Genovesa you can catch a glimpse of the frigatebirds inflated red throat pouches, in May your chances increase for witnessing the blue-footed booby mating dance on North Seymour and in August you can catch the newly born sea lion pups. There is always something incredible to see on the Galapagos. For a complete list of wildlife activity check out the monthly calendar at Ecuador Travel Site.

The peak tourism months are June, July and August, as well as mid-December through mid-January. You should book your trip well in advance during these times, as the number of visitors allowed on the islands is limited. Be aware that the prices are also often higher during this time. December through May is when the sea tends to be the calmest. In these months the weather is hotter and slightly rainy with temperatures typically in the 80s. On most days the sun will still make an appearance after the rainfall. June through November brings cooler temperatures (in the 70s) and colder water. Experienced divers prefer this time of year, as the currents bringing nutrients into the water draws more amazing marine life.

How to Visit/Planning:

One of the biggest decisions to make when planning your travel to Galapagos is how you will choose to explore the islands. You can either take a cruise on a live-aboard boat or stay onshore using a hotel as your base. If you select the latter, it is possible to book day trips to some of the popular islands from Santa Cruz or San Cristobal. Though this may be a more economical option, getting around independently can be challenging, as exploring most of the islands requires being accompanied by a licensed guide. Plus, you will have limitations to the islands you can reach due to the distance. The advantage to a multi-day live-aboard cruise is that they leverage the night hours by using them to travel between islands, so your days are not wasted. The small group yachts, under 20 passengers, are the best way to explore the islands and see more of the wildlife in a personalized environment. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of licensed vessels with a variety of stops and routes to choose from. Ecoventura is the sustainable travel company who took me through the islands, and is ideal for those wanting a small group experience with educated naturalists. If you opt for day trips from the main islands, Sharksky offers good options. The best solution may be to take a 4-day cruise then spend a couple days on your own on a populated island, like Puerto Ayora in Santa Cruz or Puerto Baquerizo Moreno in Cristóbal.

Getting Around:

Navigating between the islands will require a plane or boat. Though for getting around on the populated islands you can rent a bike for about $15 per day or catch a taxi for a couple of bucks to most destinations.

If you are staying overnight in Guayaquil, try Hotel Oro Verde (from $124), which offers shuttle service from the airport or for a more peaceful stay in a quiet residential area, Nazu House Bed & Breakfast (from $86). In Quito, splurge at Hotel Patio Andaluz (from $210) centrally located in the historic district or hideaway at Las Terrazas de Dana (from $109), a modern ecolodge in the cloud forest of Mindo. In the Galapagos, stay in the lap of luxury at Finch Bay Eco Hotel (from $325) on Santa Cruz Island or the family run Galapagos Suites (from $134). On San Cristóbal, try the simple Galapagos Eco Friendly (from $89) that has all you need.

Where to Eat:

While in Quito, get your ceviche fix at Zazu (www.zazuquito.com) or indulge in traditional Ecuadorian dishes and pasta at Fried Bananas Café (www.newfriedbananas.com), make sure to order the fried banana dessert made with vodka. Bucket List Must-Dos:

Plan your trip around the month of May to get a better chance of witnessing the Blue Footed Booby mating dance, the courtship ritual of these popular birds.

Take the steep climb to the top of the volcanic cone of Bartolomé and get a peak at the most photographed natural structure in the Galapagos, Pinnacle Rock.

Do as the sailors did in the 19th century and send a post card at Post Office Bay on Floreana Island. Leave one and sift through the others to pick one close to home to hand deliver.

Take a closer look at the giant tortoises at the Darwin Research Station (https://ift.tt/Kyq8rp) in Puerto Ayora where scientists and volunteers are involved in conservation.

Snorkel through the network of lava tunnels known as Los Tuneles on isle Isabela. The unique formations above and below the water include a series of arcs and tunnels that are a sanctuary of marine life.

Essential Information:

It is a requirement to have a naturalist with you when exploring the protected islands; you cannot just venture off on your own.

Though you may be able to hop onto a last-minute cruise when you reach the islands, it’s best to book well in advance, at least 3-4 months during non-peak times and 6 months to a year during high tourist months.

When arriving to either of the two Galapagos airports, travelers must pay a $100 per person ($50 for children under 12) Galapagos National Park entrance fee at immigration.

A visa is not required to enter Ecuador, though make sure your passport does not expire within 6 months of arrival.

It is strictly prohibited to touch or otherwise disturb the nature or wildlife of the Galapagos. Do not feed the animals (not even a drop of water) or leave behind any sort of litter.

Packing Tips:

Exploring the Galapagos typically means being on a boat, so make sure that you load up on motion sickness medication. Some days can get pretty choppy and seasickness can even affect those not prone to it. Try the sea-band wristband or Dramamine’s less drowsy formula.

Be kind to the ecosystem by bringing biodegradable sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner and lotions. (Alba Botanica makes a highly rated sunscreen and Campsuds makes a multi-purpose cleaner that can be used as a shampoo, body wash or even dish cleaner.)

A small pair of binoculars can go a long way when trying to spot wildlife from the boat. (Bushnell Falcon makes some nice ones for under $30)

Limit plastic waste by bringing a reusable water bottle. (The Vapor Element Bottle is perfect for travel since it folds up into a tiny neat package when empty)

Bring the right pair of shoes. Light hiking shoes are necessary for some of the islands and water shoes are needed for the wet landings when the panga can’t bring you all the way to the shore or dock. Yes, you read it right! I finally did it! I went on a solo trip for the first time and it’s for my 30th birthday!!

I’ve been thinking of doing this for the longest time as I love TRAVELING, and lately, I love being ON MY OWN. Put those together, and what do you get? Labo! Seriously, you can just do the math! Haha!

I booked this trip probably around April (when we got our bonus) and when PAL had one of their seat sales, which was very timely. I did not book any baggage allowance yet as I wanted to backpack around the island and I wanted to teach myself how to pack light this time. So total cost was around Php 1,100 round freaking trip!!!!!!

Weeks prior to the trip, I wasn’t sure if I was gonna push through as the weather didn’t look so good, plus I was a bit short on moolah as I am not doing well at my sales job, but since I was turning 30 naman na and I saved up pa rin naman, plus, I, really, really wanted to do something new, I did it!!! My adventurous self was poking me constantly that I got annoyed so sige na, push na this!

The week prior to the trip, I was still sooooo busy implementing activities. I even traveled to one of my remote territories the day before, so you can just imagine how tired I was from the long drive, but that didn’t stop me! In fact, I was sooooo excited, I packed my bag a few days prior. Usually, I’d pack my luggage the night before a trip, which brings me to ehem, the things I learned on my first ever solo trip!

PACK YOUR BAG EARLY! – Ok so you guys probably already know this, but did I say that this post was about you? Charot! Nang-away? Anyhooooo, I normally pack my bags the night before, coz that’s the time that I don’t have to worry about my deodorant getting lost in my luggage when I haven’t put on any yet. Same with my slippers, undies etc. This time, I started packing my stuff at least 2 days prior, so I had time to sort through my beach OOTD’s, my swimwear, my scarves (always!). I had time to check my travel toiletries so I could buy whatever’s lacking. I was also able to organize my stuff in separate travel pouches especially my cords, chargers, batteries!

RESULT:I was able to eliminate excess stuff as I had time to really think about what I am going to wear based on my itinerary. Unfortunately, I still had to buy prepaid baggage allowance. I guess I really am no expert at PACKING SHYET, I mean, PACKING LIGHT. I guess this was still a FAIL, nevertheless, I still tried (so it’s a WIN too!) and that’s what matters. For my next beach trip though, I would really want to pack less than 7kg! Challenge accepted!

DO A LOT OF RESEARCH! NO ONE’S GONNA DO IT FOR YOU THIS TIME! Normally, my brother and sister would do all the research for our family trips, from the itinerary, to hotels and transport to restaurants to try and shopping districts to visit. Same with trips with my friends. I have a friend in Cebu who does all the financial stuff, so we would all just depend on her on how much we would all have to pay individually when the bills come. The only time I did really heavy research was for our first Japan trip coz I had all the time in the world (I was unemployed at the time haha). So It’s not like I am useless when traveling. See, I could do it if I want to, and this time, I HAD TO. Thanks to all the bloggers, vloggers, influencers, Biyahe ni Drew, and my bro for all the tips, the tricks and all the things they learned from their trips to Camiguin.

RESULT: I was able to browse through different options and finally book my accommodations the best way possible (Thanks Agoda and Booking.com). I was able to put together my own itinerary (without having to consider the preferences of another–yay for solo trips). Although 70% of my research was literally just spoon fed by my brother who went to Camiguin a few months earlier, I still am proud of myself for being able to juggle these last minute reservations with TONS of WORK!!

IF THERE’S AN OPTION TO PAY CHEAPER, GO FOR IT! – This is probably a result of doing number 2 too. No, it’s not the #2 you’re thinking about! I was referring to DOING YOUR RESEARCH.

If you happen to find out how much things really cost ahead of time, say for example, renting a scooter to go around the island on, you wouldn’t pay Php 500 for a 24 hour use!!!! And yes, I am speaking from experience. Sadly, I forgot how much my brother paid for his when he rented one. I didn’t have time to scroll through our looooooooooong IG conversation, so I paid Php 500 instead of just Php 250-300!

When commuting, try to find out how to go around like the locals do (thanks bro and our hotel receptionists for the tips!)! It would help you save big time! On my 3rd day, I commuted on Camiguin’s public transport, aka their relas/motorelas and paid around Php 11 the most!

Also, when you’re alone in say some sort of public pool with tables for rent, you don’t have to rent a whole table for your stuff and pay Php 75. Sadly, I also did, when I could just have left my bag and slippers beside the pool itself.

For food, try walking around your hotel, look for restaurants where the locals eat, or again, do your research and check reviews of previews visitors to get the “bung for your buck!”. You don’t really have to go cheap for food, but it would be soooooo nice to have a sumptuous for an incredibly affordable seafood lunch or dinner!

For your accommodation: Since this was my birthday trip, I booked a night at a pricier place, Ysla Beach Camp and Eco Resort for the glamping experience and I must say that it was worth every penny! Then I transferred to a budget hotel, GV hotel which was equally worth my hard earned money coz it was in the middle of everything and I was really comfortable as well! My room was just Php 500 a night! I just added P25/night to transfer to an air-conditioned room. I will be making a separate post for my trip itinerary so I will be writing a more extensive review of the land arrangements!

Another tip for budget travelers going to Camiguin, I paid friggin Php 200 for my boat ride to White Island instead of Php 450-500, though the guilt trip afterwards still kills me to this day! LOL! Instead of finding and convincing a group of 3 or perhaps a couple to take you along with them on their boat (boat can only accommodate 4 tourists and 2-3 boatmen) before you go to the cashier, try going directly to the cashier at the port and wait for a group to approach her and pay her, before you tell them that you are on your own and you’re looking for a group to join. This way, they would have paid their 550 each and you’re just gonna have to pay a joiner fee of Php 200. You can talk to the group if they wish to split the payment equally and pay them after. That’s what I did, but the couple didn’t want my money! So I saved 300-350 bucks! Again, I don’t recommend this, but you can most definitely try!

RESULT: Need I say more?

MAKE SURE TO LET PEOPLE KNOW YOUR ITINERARY! – I was in constant communication with my brother and my family, just in case I get in any accident or into any serious situation. And you can also get in touch with friends through video call if you can! It will be less lonely! LOL!

RENT A SCOOTER OR MOTORCYCLE! – I need not emphasize this!! This is the best way for you to go around the island, on your own time and terms. Of course, there are risks of you being flagged down by NPA’s (JK! there are NONE!), or crashing with no one to rescue you (there’s no cell service in some parts of the island) or getting robbed (not that I heard any) but it’s part of the adventure! TBH, it was my first time riding one and I was manhandled by it. JK! The first time I was ever on a scooter (which was manual transmission pa) was back in high school/college (about 10-15 years ago) and my tito was just letting us have a feel of it around an almost carless cemetery. So I have no experience of riding one on public roads ever, but like what they always say, long as you know how to ride a bike, you’re good to go! Funny coz when the owner was handing it to me, I asked him 3x how to lock the bike when getting off (to avoid it getting robbed), how to start the ignition etc that he started to worry too. He even offered to drive me around instead, but I was firm to say “hindi kuya, gusto ko ako lang!” Tapang-tapangan eh! Solo travel nga diba? Nagtataray na naman? Char! Kidding aside, I told him firmly but in a nice way that I wanted to go around on my own. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to write about it here as part of my personal milestones! Yun lang pala!

LESSONS LEARNED: Always bring your driver’s license with you when you travel. I left mine at home, in Cebu, so I drove to the airport and back without one too! So, on my 3rd day in Camiguin, I commuted on motorelas, which was equally fun as it got me to talk to the locals and foreign tourists alike!

BE SURE TO KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND THE ISLAND! – Download the map so you could still navigate offline! Know where the tourist spots are! Ask around! I relied on Google Maps the whole time and it’s a good thing that you can literally go around the island via their circumferential road!

SUPPORT LOCAL! – This one I’m proud to say I do in all my travels! Who doesn’t? Try the local cuisine all you want coz you are gonna miss them for sure! I always make it a point to buy cute artisan products coz I love ANYTHING HANDMADE and HANDCRAFTED and ANKLETS! The one I wore on this trip was from El Nido! Talk to the artists or restaurant owners and ask them about their passion, for inspiration in your own life! LESSON LEARNED: Talking to owners and artists is what I got to learn how to do in future solo travels! I need to be less awkward and less shy! LOL!

BUY A TRIPOD WITH BLUETOOTH REMOTE CONTROLLER! – This was probably the first on my list of things to buy before I went on this trip! My friend, Dee recommended the Xiaomi selfie stick and tripod in one! It doesn’t extend that long, but it is sturdy and reliable as hell! Dayum these Mi products really are worth your money! You can easily slip it inside your beach bag as it isn’t bulky at all! You can also attached the bluetooth controller into the stick so you don’t have to worry about it getting lost! Got it for P799!

MAKE FRIENDS! – I traveled solo to have peace of mind and to not worry about wasting other people’s time, but it wouldn’t hurt to talk to a few strangers along the way. I may be an introvert, but that definitely doesn’t mean that I’m antisocial. There’s a thick line between those two coz I love talking to people. Ang defensive? I like getting to know people and hearing their stories, but in an intimate way. I don’t like big groups unless I’m comfortable with everyone. I get energy from having time for myself, but also from talking to people who inspire me, have a laugh with me and all that shizz.

In this particular trip, I got to know 2 other guests at Ysla Beach Camp. We only got to talk at breakfast before we all checked out and like everyone I met on this trip, they were surprised that I was on my own! I found out that one of them was from Cebu too, and they gladly shared tips on where to spend the sunset at.

The night before, it was one of the senior staff, ate Bing whom I talked to while waiting for my food. She shared stories about the whole Biyahe Ni Drew Crew including the main man himself **coughs so gwapo! **coughs and compared him to Atom Araullo who also visited their resort in the past.

At the Church ruins, I met this little boy named Christian, who took all of my amazing IG-worthy photos. He directed me and shot my photos in less than 5 minutes! Fastest photoshoot ever and I was surprised by how beautiful everything turned out. Walang tapon!

Lastly, on my motorela ride back to the airport (which took less than 10 mins), I met this hilarious couple who pep-talked me about career women marrying late in life. Buti na lang kasabut na ko ug Bisaya (ngek mali pa rin pala!) and was laughing the whole time, I almost missed my stop! LESSON LEARNED: Travel solo and talk to strangers, one thing you won’t be able to do much when you’re traveling with someone! And one more thing, be courteous and grateful and give the locals your best smile always!

BE GENEROUS WITH YOUR TIPS! – I know that it sometimes feel unnecessary to do so, but find it in your heart to give back because people working in tourism even those kids who offered to take such good photos of you deserve it! I know most of you are probably so generous when traveling, so good for you!

BRING A BOOK OR TWO! – This may be the right time for you to finally start the book you’ve been wanting to read for the longest time, so make the most of it! It will be perfect especially if your room has no TV and no WIFI!

BE ONE WITH NATURE and ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS! – Go camping! Wake up early and catch the sunrise by the beach! I never miss sunrises on vacation! It’s my most favorite thing to do!
