Random thoughts

I've always wondered, why do all fanfic writers agree that Zarc is a cool, confident, badass man?

For me Zarc is just a clumsy, pathetic and chaotic boy, with social anxiety and an obvious crush on Ray of which Ray is the only one who hasn't realized. Just my card and monsters nerd.

Merry ZARCMAS @enterpainment !!!

"Come on, Zarcy! It's just a few more feet! I promise all this suspense will be worth the wait!"

A light chuckle escapes Ray's lips as she guides the blindfolded duelist through the complex maze of his apartment complex. She had intentionally taken a different route than their usual one following a meal at their favorite local place to make sure Zarc wouldn't figure out just where they were heading. He was rather clever when he wanted to be, and she wanted to take no chances in him spoiling the surprise she had worked for a while on in secret.

The pro came up with this little scheme when she was told he wouldn't have anyone to celebrate with him for the holidays, other than his dragons of course. As a result, his home wasn't that decorated for the occasion. Why would he need to if he had no company to come over? Ray tried to convince her father to allow Zarc to come over for dinner, but for some reason he rejected it. Still treating her like a child she mused.

With that in mind, she wanted to do something that would at least help with the loneliness he probably would feel or has felt during this time of year. Ray could see it hidden behind those golden eyes of his. Being alone on the holidays was...a fate she wouldn't wish upon anyone, and she decided it was her mission to help ensure he wouldn't feel that way, at least to an extent.

Once they make it to his apartment, she carefully opens the door using the key she totally was given and didn't just find under his doormat right then and there. Slipping off her and his shoes with grace, she continued to guide him through the entryway and towards the living room, leaving Zarc in place as she prepared her own little act for him. Entertainment wasn't her forte, not at all, but...his passion inspired her to at least attempt it, if only to bring a smile to his face.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" She begins, saying one of Zarc's signature catchphrases after removing his blindfold for him to see nothing in this pitch-black room. "Children of all ages! I, Ray Akaba, am proud to present tonight's main event! A winter spectacle like no other that can be enjoyed even here, in the comfort of one's own home!"

At the well-timed press of a button, the room springs to life with a whole display of Christmas lights illuminating the dark space. Lights were lining the walls, all in the shapes of winter and Duel Monsters patterns that no doubt took her hours to do. Reafs, tassels, and other decorations surrounded the two, every one placed intentionally and with plenty of thought. The tree was the centerpiece of her work, however. It was decorated with ornaments of not only holiday classics, but also of his dragons and pictures she had personally taken from Zarc's many duels in the arena, along with some personal photos of her and him together on their...many outings.

The entire room was a labor of love she had spent the last few days working on in secret, utilizing solid vision technology to hide her work. It was made to show him that there was someone, someone who cared about him and was thinking about him, even if they were not there in person. It was made to remind Zarc he was not alone, even as the climb up the dueling ladder will inevitably get harder. It was made to let him know the words she still couldn't say, but were made obvious by the rosy cheeks she now had.

"Merry Christmas, Zarcy. I hope that...you liked my little show."

It’s Z-ARC time. Today’s batch is Lightwurm’s cards. Starting from Dragon of Light Wing.

The Quick-Play Spell Dragon of Light Wing’s Kanji name is 光翼の竜, which is written in Hiragana as Kouyoku no Ryuu.

The Kanji 光翼, Kouyoku alludes to Clear Wing variations’ Synchro chants, which all talk about wings of light. The specific 翼, yoku Kanji alludes to 白翼の魔術師, Hakuyoku no Majutsushi, White Wing Magician. In the context of Yu-Gi-Oh!, the Kanji for 白, white, is often replaced with the Kanji 光, light. This is particularly common in Blue-Eyes related cards. This is because, during the transition from Video Games to Official Card Game, White Magic alignment was used as the basis for LIGHT Attribute.

Clear Wing uses the Kanji title 白竜, Hakuryu in Odd-Eyes Wing Dragon, which is the same Kanji as Blue-Eyes’s title, but in Blue-Eyes’ case, it is written as shiroryu generally. Clear Wing uses Haku to sound more Haouish.

The Jewels in Z-ARC’s purified form obviously represent the En Cards, but aren’t the En Cards, they are the pendulums in Pendulum Evolution’s artwork that have been transformed by the En Cards. In other words, these are the Yuboys’ pieces of En Cards.

Z-ARC chest, which is normally armored, is open in his purified form. This chest area is where Z-ARC!Yuya was seated. The gold pieces in chest are actually supposed his own Pendulum, as seen Beyond the Pendulum’s artwork. Because Z-ARC’s heart is finally opened, the connection to En Cards is now apparent.

The card’s effect allows you to add a Supreme King Servant Dragon, or Supreme King Gate card, and Special Summon them if Z-ARC is on the field. In this context, it is for Lightwurm, and purified Astrograph.

The halo surrounding Lightwurm, with card’s effect, gives off the vibe of Z-ARC giving birth to Lightwurm, probably either in allusion to Athena’s birth out of Zeus, or the birth of the three major Japanese Kami after Izanagi’s purification ceremony. (Z-ARC himself is 1/4 Clear Wing, thus partially female, so this isn’t an absurd concept.)

Z-ARC’s purified form’s chest is a reference to Sacred Heart of Jesus, though the placement of the jewels are more close to a Buddhist mandala. Its ovid shape can refer to either various Buddhas in the center of mandalas, or Jesus’s depictions in tetramorph (Jesus with the animals representing the Four Evangelists).

We already discussed Lightwurm’s Katakana name. It is a combination of Ra in Reira, and i in Ray (Rei) in Katakana. Their Kanji title is the same as other Supreme King Servant Dragons.

Lightwurm’s Pendulum effect allows it to Special Summon itself, and then alter the Attribute, and Level of itself or another Pendulum Monster, if Z-ARC is on the field. This implies Lightwurm has the power to purify other Supreme King Servant Dragons, though for now this effect is for regular corrupt Z-ARC’s Dragons, which generally require DARK monsters.

Its first monster effect adds a Supreme King Gate, or Supreme King Servant Dragon. After that, it can Synchro Summon, or Xyz Summon a Supreme King Servant Dragon.

Its second monster effect adds itself back to the hand from face-up Extra Deck if another Pendulum Monster is destroyed.

Contrasting with Darkwurm, which is designed to protect Supreme King Gates, this card is designed to protect Z-ARC specifically.

The golden colouring of this card, and its Tuner classification, references the Darkwurm Tributed to Summon Supreme King Servant Dragon Clear Wing, and of course Ray’s own Synchro theming. One interesting tidbit, Clear Wing’s animé effect requires a DARK Tuner, similar to Dark Synchros, but its OCG/TCG effect requires a DARK non-Tuner, so while this card cannot be used to Summon Z-ARC’s Dark Rebellion without its Pendulum Effect, it can be used to used to Summon Clear Wing no problem with Darkwurm. Same goes for Odd-Eyes.

Regarding Lightwurm’s statlines, its Pendulum Scale of 8 allows it to Pendulum Summon Supreme King Gate monsters no problem, though not Supreme King Servant Dragon Odd-Eyes. This statline is designed for Supreme King Gate Magician, Astrograph’s purified form, but it can also use the original Gates, Zero, and Infinity, to temporarily protect Z-ARC, which, again, is the inverse intention of Z-ARC regarding those cards. Their regular statline is the inverse of Darkwurm’s ATK/DEF.

Further speculating from Pendulum Evolution, it seems after using Yu-boys as the replacement for Bracelet Girls’ En Cards to destroy Z-ARC’s cards, and open up his armor, what is going on here is Reira, and Ray are using Bracelet Girls’ connection to Dimension Dragons, thus exposing the En Cards essence that is now firmly in place in Z-ARC’s third bout, and apparently it worked. So congratulations.

This also explains the previous two attempts didn’t work, because Ray was focused on Z-ARC externally obvious corruption, and haven’t thought of going inside Z-ARC, both literally, and metaphorically. 

We will likely return to this duo in late July, if there is another related card.

In most cases, the Four Evangelists are in the four corners, since four corners are important in Abrahamic religions (representing four corners of the world), whereas four cardinal directions are more important in Hindiusm, and by proxy Buddhism (representing different trajectories in Samsaric Cycle, again, alluding to Ray’s Beyond the Pendulum form’s Kanji name, Trajectory Magician).

Arc V Month Day 7: Of Amores, Per the Prophecy

I ship all of these to varying degrees. Dusk(Yuri/Dennis) was my OTP for a while, but every Yu boy x their bracelet girl ship has that status now, including Genesis(ZarcRay). Entertainment(Yuya/Dennis) is my brotp, aka top platonic ship.

Counterpart(YuyaYuto) I blame a good friend for. Darkrebel(ShunYuto) I just enjoy. Rotten(YuyaYuri) is lowest on the list I literally only made that globe because Odd-Eyes Venom Dragon exists and I wanted to use it lmao.

Arc-V Day 6 and 7

I'm a bit behind. Please @arcvmonth, spare me. Don't turn me into a card.

Anyway, for Understudy Spotlight I wanna briefly talk about Roger. I say briefly, because I'll save most of my thoughts for the Villains Prompt. For now, I gotta say, he's my vote for most underrated Yugioh bad guy. I LOVE villains who think they're hot shit, but turn out to be nothing but smug snakes. Plus, his voice actor NAILS his breakdowns. I was surprised to see so many people disliked him (probably Shōnen fans who can't accept a villain that isn't super-duper powerful). Finally, I love me some Disney Villain Deaths.

Anyway, Day 7: Of Amores, Per the Prophecy

Oh boy, does Arc-V have some banger ships. Some of my faves:

Fruitshipping:

Main-guy with Main-girl ships in most Shōnen anime tend to hit with the force of a wet fart, with Yugioh being no different. This is because they fall under the trap of making the girl be the only one who constantly thinks of protagonist-kun, whereas the MC is usually only thinking about fighting, eating, and their male rival who they're totally-not-gay-with.

Therefore, it's wild that these two idiots enamored the Arc-V so much as they, and it was via the use of a very simple trick: have both parties be clearly interested in one another. Seriously, Arc-V turns into an epic, interdimensional romantic drama from Season 2, and it's so strange for a franchise like Yugioh (even if it already happened in GX). Yuya spends as much time thinking about Yuzu as she does about him, and that's so refreshing.

One thing I love about this ship is how much they emphasize that the distance between them doesn't diminish their bond. In fact, it's the opposite, when they're separated that their feelings are most in display. Yuzu's duel with Chojiro is one such example: despite not being allowed near one another, Yuzu still had her feelings reach him.

Them being enemies in their past lives but lovers in this one also adds an extra element of brainrot for me.

Appleshipping and Fallenangelshipping:

I wanna re-emphasize this: we NEED more F/M ships where the guy is completely, stupidly in love with the girl. This applies more to appleshipping admittedly; seeing Yugo explode with joy from seeing Rin will never stop melting my heart. Male characters in anime are often shy of showing physical affection toward their love interests, but not Banana-boy. Plus, imagining how they grew up in poverty is interesting.

Serenadeshipping:

OMG THIS SHIP IS SO GOOD. LIKE I KNOW I HAVE MASSIVE YURI BIAS BECAUSE LOVE LIVE FAN BUT STILL. Ok so you obviously got badass and serious Serena with ray-of-sunshine Yuzu, so the dynamic is fun from the get-go. But we also have the fact that Yuzu became one of, if not the, first friends Serena's ever had. Plus there's the "changing clothes" scene and I'm sure you could do some gay awakening shit.

Also Yuzu is so happy upon seeing Serena late in the series. Just look at her!

And then when Serena betrays them she's so sad. DAMN IT ARC-V, THIS IS FROM THE FREAKING CAPTAIN SOLO EPISODE, WHY IS MY HEART IN PIECES?!

(Extra angst when you consider this is the last time they spoke before getting thrown into Arc-V)

Finally, I imagine she'd be happy to forever be with Yuzu at the end of the series

Lustershipping:

similar dynamic as Serenade, but with a rival-to-lovers tint. It's just cute, mmkay? Aesthetically, this is one of my favorites, Masumi's design is great

Genesishipping:

Sometimes, ships are more interesting for what they don't tell you than for what they do. The showrunners left the nature of Zarc and Ray's relationship ambiguous, which means there's a lot of possible avenues to take it. Enemies to Lovers? Sure, go ahead. Enemies that become lovers because of their new incarnations' unique souls? Works too.

Plus Zarcray fans make some Fire content.

Okay, in all seriousness, I wasn’t all that sold on them as a ship when they were first introduced (in no small part thanks to the fact that I was getting kinda annoyed by the fandom’s obsession with the counterparts...) but because the ship’s popularity exploded almost immediately and the fandom created amazing content with lots of amazing “what if?” scenarios, I couldn’t help myself.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

That Ray is totally the one leading the relationship :’D

Okay, again, bad joke, but I really like the whole situation they both stuck themselves into: both met each other at equal power and wills, and ended up creating what could possibly be called kinda stable time loop, in which Zarc was bound to revive and Ray to always stop him, rewriting reality over and over again as needed.

That requires some guts and stubbornness and I love that.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Mmmmm, I have read many, many, many interpretations for a possible relationship between them and while I may not agree with all of them, is not like there’s anything I have gotten to actually hate... I think? 

I mean, I remember early on, some people thought Zarc was a cool guy being all confident and suave, and I laughed at the idea of any combination of the Yu boys ever being suave, but that’s it :’D

Ray's face was almost always pressed into a book. Whether it be for reading for educational or leisure purposes, one could find the eldest Akaba partaking in an activity that was called boring by most. Ray never paid such comments any mind, for she found great value in what was found in literature, and considering her position, the access to such things was vast and easily attainable. It was truly a luxury that most did not have, as she is painfully made aware of every day when she notices that most of the servants in the Akaba house can barely read a to-do list. Thus, she has come to treasure her books and the time she has to read them, much to the dismay of a certain dragon who she been forced to incorporate into her life without a say.

Zarc constantly interrupted Ray's reading times, whether it be through snark comments or even daring to take a book right from her hands. Despite their positions, and the improvements he's made to get used to them, he still find his own ways of being defiant and making her life just that much more troublesome. It was probably his own form of trying to get back at her for the embarrassing defeat he suffered thanks to her and her sisters. Dragon's were prideful creatures through and through, as one of the only books she found on their kind pointed out. Guess that was something they had in common, she supposed.

Today's ventures into the written work had found Ray reading a guilty pleasure of sorts, the kind of book she didn't want anyone to find out she liked to read. As such, she was cooped up in a place that no one knew about, a secret study space her father had made just for her so she could focus on her studies in peace. Not even the servants knew of such a place. At least...that's what she thought until the door creaked open suddenly, causing Ray to instantly hide the book under her dress skirt.

She should have known he would have found her eventually with that keen smell of his. It may be wise for her to try different perfumes to mask her scent in the future. The last thing she needs is him continuing to sneak up on her like this and causing her to get flustered ever so slightly.

"For someone who begged me for orders all those months ago, you seem to not be so good at following them." Ray remarks, placing her hands over her lap to try and keep the book underneath in place. "Now, what business do you have with me, Zarc? I thought I made it clear to not come find me until dinner unless it was an emergency."

There is a lot of the talk about the new Z-ARC support, like, this is basically the actual ending of ARC-V, but for now, I’m focusing on the Katakana names.

覇王龍ズァーク is the Japanese name of Z-ARC as we discussed before, Haouryuu Zuaaku. As we discussed before, zu sound here is weird.

However,

覇王天龍オッドアイズ・アークレイ・ドラゴン, Odd-Eyes Arcray Dragon uses the “zu” sound for Odd-Eyes (オッドアイズ, Oddoaizu, hey, ai zu!), and adds a break for aaku, then adds Ray’s name レイ (rei, meaning zero, or ley in ley lines, known in Japan, and China as “dragon pits”), which explains the true purpose of the “zu” sound.

or does it?

As you may know, 2 pf the Dimension Dragons have their Bracelet Girls’ names in them, and 1 of them alludes to it:

オッドアイズ・ペンデュラム・ドラゴン, Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon has the ズ, zu, and yu, ュ, letters, representing Yuzu.

クリアウィング・シンクロ・ドラゴン, Clear Wing Synchro Dragon has リ, ri, and ン, n, representing Rin.

ダーク・リベリオン・エクシーズ・ドラゴン, Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon has the リ, ri, alluding to Ruri, but doesn’t contain the ru sound.

These specific Dragons are somewhat important, since they spell Z-ARC’s name: ズ, zu from Odd-Eyes, ア, a, from Clear Wing, ーク, (elongation)+ku from Dark Rebellion. 

スターヴ・ヴェノム・フュージョン・ドラゴン, Starving Venom Fusion Dragon doesn’t have a lot of interesting stuff going on for it, but it contains a lot of Pendulum’s characters. ム, mu, ラ, ra, ュ, yu, ン, n. (In Z-ARC’s name, the elongation sound might come from here, but they kinda dropped the ball here to be honest, to focus on Yuri’s status as an evil Yuya specifically rather than his status as one of the Yu-boys.)

Since 3/4′s of the dragons reference their respective Bracelet Girls, it makes sense Z-ARC to reference his, Ray.

For future reference: 

Ship tags for Zarcray are ズァクレイ (Zuakurei), and ズァレイ (Zuarei), much like Yuyayuzu, this doesn’t have the elongation sound, unlike Odd-Eyes Arcray Dragon. Otherwise, Odd-Eyes Arcray Dragon literally contains their ship name. Hilarious. I don’t get how more canon than you can get. I would like Yusei x Aki to try.

(This card is especially amusing, because it was revealed shortly after Vision Resonator in the Jack Atlas SD. Zarcray somehow managed to beat Jack x Carly, damn.)

覇王眷竜ライトヴルム, Supreme King Servant Dragon Lightwurm’s Katakana name, Raitovurumu, which is a combination of Ra in Reira, and i, in Ray (Rei).

Though Reira’s name is written in Kanji 零羅, zero lightweight fabric/silk gauze/thin silk.

This card is likely a homage to Lightray monsters, which are the LIGHT counterparts of various monsters, mostly DARK ones. Their names were written in Katakana, thus contain Ray’s name.

wurm part in Darkwurm, and Lightwurm is likely a reference to lindwurms:

Much like Eternatus’s inspiration, the intended meaning is likely how wurms, in their ouroboros-esque form, represent infinity.

(We will talk about this card more in detail, but apparently seeing a whitewurm in Swedish folklore means good luck.)

Pendulum Evolution’s name is based off Structure Deck: Pendulum Evolution, which featured Astrograph Sorcerer, and Chronograph Sorcerer, alongside the Magician forms of Dimension Dragons.

The card’s effect is for Astrograph Sorcerer, and its retrain, but since the artwork features pendulum neclaces for each Yu-boy, transformed by their respective En cards, this might be a hint towards either 2500 ATK versions of the Dragon Magicians, and/or 2500 Pendulum Main Deck versions of Dimension Dragons.

I find it amusing that of all Yu-boy/Bracelet Girl couples, Zarcray ended up getting the sappiest, most 80s animé looking stuff. This stuff looks like it is straight out of a classic shoujo manga, or old mecha animé.
