The Fetishization of Albinism

Why is Albinism Treated this way on Tumblr?

Definition of Fetishization: 

to make a fetish of

“any object or nongenital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation,” source.

I’ve noticed that a lot of the posts under the #albinism or #albino tag on this website have captions of the poster gushing about how beautiful they think albinism is, or how they would like to be albino or have an albino child.  I find this a bit strange.  

Naturally, if an albino person is a model (like Nastya Zhidkova) they would probably look beautiful whether they had albinism or not.  There are plenty of people with albinism with more average body types or less striking features, so it’s a bit misleading to think that people with albinism always look ethereal/angelic/model-esque.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather have people telling me that my albinism is pretty as opposed to saying I look like a freak who needs a suntan.  However, putting albinism on a pedestal only increases the separation between people with this disorder and non-affected people.  It’s a medical condition, not a fashion statement.

I do feel proud whenever I hear about albino models in magazines.  Why?  Because maybe the publicity will help people understand the disorder.  Normally, albino people are portrayed as evil in movies/literature, so hopefully having everyday individuals affected with albinism in the media can help combat that stereotype.  Fetishization of albinism is just another stereotype, albeit a less derogatory one.

Desire to have albinism, or the desire to have an albino child:

I understand people saying that albinism “looks cool” but this one I just don’t get.  Overall, I’d say may experience with albinism has been negative.  It’s the source of my blindness (which has gotten worse with age), it’s the reason I can’t drive a car or have a normal day at the beach with friends.  The functional impact of the disorder is more than needing to wear sunscreen every now and then.

Here’s a list of some of the functional ramifications of being albino:

Visual impairment: this diagnosis starts at 20/60.  Many people with albinism are visually impaired, meaning they can’t read regular print, drive a car, etc.  It’s not unusual for people with this disorder to wear glasses or use visual aids like a magnifying glass or a CCTV.  This diagnosis means that EVEN WITH THEIR GLASSES ON they are visually impaired.  Their vision IS NOT CORRECTABLE.

Blindness: this diagnosis starts at 20/200.  A large number of people with albinism are legally blind, which is a more severe condition than being visually impaired.  Lots of children with albinism are born visually impaired but, because they have no melanin to protect their retina, their vision decreases with age.  With this level of vision it becomes necessary to use audio devices like screen readers for the computer, color identifiers on a smartphone for matching clothes, Braille for reading signs, tactile markers on home appliances, orientation and mobility training in cane use for traveling, possibly even a guide dog depending on how much traveling you do.  This diagnosis means that EVEN WITH THEIR GLASSES ON they are blind, meaning their vision IS NOT CORRECTABLE.

Skin sensitivity: People with albinism can not tan.  They can’t get a natural tan, they can’t use a tanning bed, their burn will not fade into a tan, etc.  A lot of people do not understand this.  Again, the lack of melanin means their skin is not protected from the sun, so excessive sun exposure can lead to skin cancers or eye cancers because of UV damage.  Using a high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are a MUST for people with albinism.

Auto-immune disorders: there are some rare types of albinism (such as Chediak-Higashi Syndrome) that can cause the person to be more susceptible to bacterial infections, leading to further immune complications.

Bleeding Tendency and Lung Disease: this type of albinism is Hermansky Pudlak Syndrome and it’s also rare.  It has a functional impact similar to hemophilia but the severity can very from individual to individual.  HPS is also characterized by lung inflammation, which worsens as the person ages.  Again, the lung disease varies, much like the bleeding tendency.

There is no treatment for albinism.  It’s a genetic disorder, meaning the individual has had it since birth and will have it for the rest of their lives.  You can try to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of the disorder but you will never be able to treat the root cause.

Now is it more clear why the fetishization of this disorder seems so strange to me?  People with albinism are just like everyone else.  Fetishizing albinism is like fetishizing all tall people, or all people with red hair.  It’s a stereotype.

He leaves before his emotions can take control as per Cypress’ orders after defeat

Immediately throwing himself into your arms and asking for forgiveness.

Pasts Long Gone

Below the surface, in deep blue waters, a submarine descended, bubbles streaming off the sides and escaping the propeller blades to where they ascended towards the light. From above, the gradually darkening light filtered through the water and into the small windows in the side of the submarine, allowing its occupants to glimpse a myriad of aquatic Loomians as they passed. ‘’So… why exactly is there an entire city under the ocean?” Jake questioned, facing the others.

Lucy smiled, sitting with her legs criss-cross on her seat. ‘’A long time ago, there was a project to build a massive city that hovered in the sky, high above the ocean. They called it ‘Anthian City’. The project was at least somewhat successful, as they managed to get the main foundation to hover for a couple of years.’’ Jake’s mind went back to the Anthian he knew, as Lucy continued. He hadn’t completely zoned out, more so concentrating on the thought, with her voice merely in the background.

’’…Nobody is sure what caused it, but one day the city suddenly began to fall out of the sky.’’ The girl twin continued. Jake blinked in mild surprise. Well, that was odd…

The plan hadn’t been successful. Tyler’s voice rang out through the airship cabin, fists clenched and at times tugging at their hat, while Cypress looked on, eerily calm. ‘’It was those two brats that stormed in and ruined it!’’ The head admin fumed before taking a deep breath, turning their eyes to the captive in their midst. ‘’But at least we have him now.’’

Jake felt tears prick his eyes, yet for his own sake he had to resist crying or else they’d see it. What had he done? Running off like that? Tess was sure to be disappointed.

’’We got what we came for. Stop being an overgrown crybaby, Tyler.’’ Gabe gestured to the Prison Bottle sitting in its container, in sight but out of reach for Jake who was restrained anyway. ‘’Those airheads didn’t see us coming.’’

‘’You think you were stealthy?’’ Harry asked. ‘’I’d hardly call your methods anything close to that.’’

‘’And yours is better?” Gabe shot back. ‘’Dropping into the museum by smashing through the skylight and taking the bottle, that’s sure to be sooo stealthy…?’’ ‘’I made sure to smoke bomb the place upon entry!’’ Harry huffed, though he furrowed his eyebrows briefly. ‘’I could’ve sworn I saw something in there- though, that’s not the point-‘’

‘’Enough, you two.’’ Cypress slid a hand down the side of his face, almost dislodging his glasses in the process. ‘’I would demote both of you if you were to continue, but your skills prove too valuable for such a thing to happen. Instead, I have to pay my medical bills in full to at least be able to tolerate your childishness.’’

Jake tensed up as Cypress looked over at him, his stare burning holes into the boy’s very core. The very image of the city of the skies falling into the seas below still shadowing his every thought. Even if it didn’t technically happen…

Something thudded above him. Immediately, he looked up, as did the Admins and Cypress. ‘’Sir, something’s on the roof!’’ The pilot shouted from the cockpit. Gabe scowled, taking out a Pokéball as he headed over to one of the side doors. ‘’Harry, take the other side. We’ll see if our little ‘guest‘ is fit for a farewell party.’’ Gabe ordered his brother, opening the side door as air rushed in, the man taking off his top hat and putting it on a nearby seat. “What? Like the one we gave for your ex?” Harry rolled his eyes, taking his position at the other door. Gabe’s eyes darted over at him with a dangerous look in them. ‘’Oh. Yeah, one of your exes.’’ ‘’Prick.’’ Gabe muttered before he leapt out, releasing his Pokémon from the Pokéball.

‘’Dickhead.’’ Harry laughed under his breath, jumping out.

‘’Idiots.’’ Tyler sat down, throwing a leg over the over. ‘’Can’t live with them, can’t live without them, am I right, boss?” They grinned, throwing a glance Cypress’ way. ‘’You have your moments.’’ Cypress quietly replied. Ouch. “Jake?” A voice snapped him out of the memory. The boy cleared his throat, shifting on his seat and looking towards its source. Lucas sat up straight, meeting the former Team Eclipse Admin’s gaze. ‘’You okay?” He nodded. Jake glanced out the window, scanning the blue surroundings for anything out of the ordinary, before leaning in closer. Faint lights twinkled in the distance, prompting a similarly faint smile on Jake’s face. ‘’Hey guys! It looks like we’re arriving.’’ Lucas announced once he too noticed the underwater city as the submarine approached it. ‘’Everyone ready?” Jake questioned. The others nodded. ‘’Let’s do this!’’ All of them got up, gathering their belongings once the submarine surfaced in the transit hub. A few seats behind the group, Meredin smiled to himself, adjusting the shades on his face. He pretended to be gathering his belongings as the other passengers got up and exited, making sure to take his time while the ‘kids’ left the sub, one by one. Jake paused for a second, being the last to go. He glanced around at the submarine’s interior, his gaze stopping on the man with the shades. Both stilled, Meredin glad to have his shades while he glared back. ‘’Go on ahead of me, kid.’’ Meredin tried smiling. ‘’I dropped something under the seat.’’ ‘’I can help.’’ Jake offered. ’’No thanks.’’ The man answered all too quickly, swearing under his breath once he saw the boy lift an eyebrow. ‘’I’m alright. Besides, you gotta catch up with your friends, right?” ‘’Right.’’ Jake swallowed the lump in his throat. It was like looking at Cypress fresh from his betrayal, unsettling and out of the blue. He turned on his heel, finally leaving the sub. ‘’You took your time.’’ Mabel commented once he stepped out onto the ramp. ‘’I… er- dropped something.’’ The former admin excused, brushing past. He looked around, heaving a sigh that left his shoulders slumped. An Anthian that wasn’t saved… became this? (going to make a follow up reblog with a little something I found :) )

Ark: The Animated Series “Review”

So far so good, I enjoyed it quite a bit!

But, I still have my complaints. I see a lot of people mentioning the “woke” agenda. And they aren’t wrong, it can be on the nose, with some ideology’s. But the cause that Helena protests in is of a culture native to her homeland, it isn’t part of the American movements or agenda technically- and again, Australia is pro lgbt as well. So, maybe instead of bitching about how woke it is? Remember that it is just an accurate depiction of a 21st century human, just like Rockwell is disgustingly misogynistic like he would be in his era, and bob too. They are just…of their time still. All the voice actors did awesome jobs as well-

Reminds me of ATLA a little for the animation too.

Also- fast forward exists. If lesbians gross you out skip ahead, or pretend it’s a man?

ARK TAS theorising (spoilers)

Honestly was confused when Helena brought out the green artifact and I was racking my brain to figure out which one it was. Turns out it was the Artifact of the Pack which I’ve never really seen a lot of. Pretty neat, anyway. With that said, it’s interesting to see that the Broodmother’s defeat meant the Green Obelisk appeared, so I’m guessing the Megapithecus in the sixth episode’s trailer is the next boss they’d go for (or stumble upon, they didn’t know they were about to go into a nest of giant spiders lmao). The other two artifacts must be the Artifact of the Strong (blue) and Artifact of the Immune (red). Either one is terrifying in their own respects and I can’t imagine anyone willingly going into either cave to get them. (You know, the toxic gas, and the stupid amount of creatures in both caves, Strong’s cave having super cold temperatures and yetis n all that jazz). What I am most interested to see is the inclusion of TEK gear, what I assume to be the TEK rifle when Mei-Yin takes one (AND LEAVES THE OTHER??? I would totally grab that for some extra firepower if need be).

On another note, I named every ARK creature I could see when they appeared on the screen (though I wish we saw more of that Quetzal, oh well, the baby is good enough for now).

That’s all I got for now, I want to see more people posting about this series (i watched it for the lesbians).
