Using data from the retired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)—a joint project of NASA and the German Space Agency at DLR—Southwest Research Institute scientists have discovered, for the first time, water molecules on the surface of an asteroid. Scientists looked at four silicate-rich asteroids using the FORCAST instrument to isolate the mid-infrared spectral signatures indicative of molecular water on two of them. "Asteroids are leftovers from the planetary formation process, so their compositions vary depending on where they formed in the solar nebula," said SwRI's Dr. Anicia Arredondo, lead author of a paper in The Planetary Science Journal about the discovery. "Of particular interest is the distribution of water on asteroids, because that can shed light on how water was delivered to Earth."

The first female space commander will be featured in a new documentary. The story of retired NASA astronaut Eileen Collins will be retold in "Spacewoman," a documentary coming in 2025 based on Collins' memoir "Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars" (Arcade, 2021) co-written with space historian Jonathan Ward. Collins, who flew four times in space, served as pilot on two space shuttle missions (STS-63 and STS-84 in February 1995 and May 1997, respectively) and commander of crew on another two spaceflights (STS-93 in July 1999, and STS-114 in July to August 2005).

january 30th after six weeks of collecting rocks and carefully stuffing them into titantium tubes, the mars rover perserverance completed what NASA calls the “first sample depot on another world”, which is probably also the first time these words have been said in that order. in 2027, an ESA/NASA mission will go to mars and collect the samples strewn about the red planet, to answer thee space question there is: aliens? or, to be more specific: aliens…at some point?

green comet comes close to earth and leaves the solar system after being called boring

february 1st while you were (hopefully) trying to catch a glimpse of hauntingly green comet ZTF from your backyard, ESA was trying the same with the most powerful X-ray telescopes ever placed into orbit, XXM-Newton, and found…it to be slightly dull. huh. whatever, it still looks good on pictures. goodbye forever!

january 6th all packed up for intercontinental instead of interstellar travel, the ESA JUICE mission is headed from france to the korou spaceport. launching in april 2023, the mission is aimed for jupiter’s ice moons (get it now?) - ganymede, callisto and europa - to answer the question and say it with me now: aliens? or, to be more specific: aliens…under the ice?

on top of all that, there were 3 launches carrying 106 space objects, and there were 10 people in space. that’s it bye
