I love watching old movie shorts about jazz bands, and this one was very charming. I hope you'll like it too!
A little background on Mr. Savitt himself:
Jan Savitt (born Jacob Savetnick in 1907, in what is now Shumsk, Ukraine) was a very talented musician, having previously performed in Leopold Stokowski's orchestra as a violinist; he later pursued a successful career as a bandleader, and Jan Savitt & His Top Hatters became the staff orchestra at Philadelphia's NBC affiliate (KYW/NBC) in 1938. Among the singers who performed with Savitt's band was George "Bon Bon" Tunnell, one of the first African-American singers to perform with a white band (Tunnell later pursued his own solo career; among the songs he recorded was a version of "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire").
Very sadly, Jan Savitt suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while traveling to a Sacramento concert with his orchestra and died aged 41 - just two years after this film was made. He was survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Stillwell, and two daughters (one of whom, Jo Ann, later married into the Douglas family; her husband was Kirk Douglas' son Joel, and they lived in Clark Gable and Carole Lombard's former residence in Palm Springs, CA until Jo Ann's death in 2013).
I only discovered Jan Savitt and his band recently, and was very sad to see that he'd passed away at such a young age. He had an incredible musical talent and I wish we'd been able to see and hear more of it before his passing!

On the one-hand I think that the commonly-memed-upon detail that Elder Maxson is only 20 despite presenting himself like a battle-hardened grizzled 40-something is grounds for really rich characterization and storytelling, because it reframes many of his more over-the-top actions as the grandiose performativity of a young-adult massively in over his head and trying to playing catch-up, an exalted figurehead who's more the product of the authoritarian cult he's ostensibly leading than it's architect. On the other hand I also think there's a really excellent chance that they just weren't paying attention to how old he was supposed to be

Quel beau dessin, OP! Ça c’est magnifique. J’adore Paladin Danse et la Brotherhood of Steel ❤️
Tumblr media

Update now that the show’s out:
How curious that this did indeed turn out to be the Prydwen herself! I wonder how, when and why they changed their minds, but I am very pleased to see her all the same. I’d like to think that Maxson remains alive and well as a result and that maybe it bodes well for a canon Minutemen/BOS ending…
This is not the Prydwen...
Tumblr media
According to this article , this airship is "The Caswennan"... and it's got me wondering what the name means.
I understand that 'Prydwen' means 'handsome' or 'fair of face', (-wen is feminine, -wyn is masculine) so I did some searching.
'Carnwennan' was the name of King Arthur's dagger.
The name 'Cas' (castell) is found at the beginning of some Welsh place names and means 'castle'. Old Welsh 'Cair' meant 'stronghold, citadel or fortress'.
'Wennan' means 'fair, white, blessed' (this blog was helpful).
So I'm taking this name to mean something along the lines of 'Castle Fair' - another handsome lady of a floating citadel.

It took me a while, but I finally saw Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire… and I am so glad that nobody spoiled THAT character reveal for me. It was incredible and I’m so happy. So much fun was had that day.
Also, shout out to the lovely dude at the front desk who recommended a Godzilla lore YouTube channel to me! Proper legend. Cheers <3

There is a definite difference between:
“I’m sorry your grandma was hit by that bus” (that really sucks and you have my heartfelt sympathy)
and
“I’m sorry your grandma was hit by that bus” (yeah, I was the driver, my bad)
Unfortunately, it seems to be completely indistinguishable in speech, and I meet people all the time who genuinely cannot tell whether I’m expressing sorrow or simply admitting liability before all claims are settled (not recommended).
As a result, I’ve started rephrasing things to convey the intended meaning more clearly. “I was sorry to hear about your grandma, how’s she doing? Did she sue the bus company yet?” vs “Sorry about your grandma. She really should stop jaywalking across four lanes of traffic though. Please don’t sue, I have a family” are definitely easier for others to figure out the context.
(I don’t recommend responding in either case with “I’m not sorry, Grandma knows what she did”, even if she really had it coming either way.)
Either people need to learn how to tell the difference between an “I’m sorry” that takes direct responsibility and an “I’m sorry” that signifies sympathy, or I’m gonna start responding to unfortunate information with a solemn nod and a “Sympies,” because I am tired of receiving a “Why? It wasn’t your fault” every time I try to vocalize compassion.
