Alright Kataangers, it’s that time of year again!  

Kataang Week 2024 is tentatively scheduled for July 29th through August 5th!

Thank you to all who shared and responded to the interest check! There was resounding support for holding Kataang Week again this year, as you can see from the results of the survey.

And roughly 40 people (perhaps more, given the similar number of 'maybe' respondents) indicate they plan to create content for the week.

Prompt Submission will be open for the next 2 weeks. So from today, April 4th until April 18th, please submit any prompts you would like to be in the running this year.  

Please submit your ideas for prompts - 1 or 2 words/short phrases only! - through the survey linked here. Again, the last day to submit prompts will be April 18th!

And please reblog to help spread the word!

What if I represent the ocean and you represent the moon, the sky, and we were always meant to circle each other, push and pull? What if I’m what tethers you to the world, what if I’m the embodiment of your people’s love? What if my face was the first you saw when you woke up and the last thing you gaze upon in the series? What if we both have access to unbelievable power, what if we both succumb to our anger, but we were able to ground each other in a way no one else could? What if I loved you through your worst, what if we both loved each other when our souls were dark enough to hurt others? What if we were both terrified of the other being hurt, and you tried so hard to protect me, but I couldn’t protect you? What if despite everything you died in my arms and I had to gaze upon the dead body of my loved one once again, but I refused to let it happen, and I brought you back to life? What if we paralleled Oma and Shu, Tui and La, lovers who performed powerful feats of bending after the other died? What if we asked why our story has to end that way, what if we dared to live? What if we can’t be separated, not by space or time or even death? Kataang Week 2023 (July 24 - July 31) is now officially over! We had a fantastic event with great submissions from you all!

We'd also like to take this moment to say HAPPY 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO KATAANG WEEK! We had a wonderful decade up to this point in being a part of the Kataang Community. Shout out to @secretsecrettunnel who revived Kataang Week in the summer of 2013 a few years after Avatar: The Last Airbender ended and when the fandom was itching for more Kataang during The Legend of Korra's run.

As for this year's Kataang Week...

Late submissions are still being accepted up until the next event, so don’t be shy and don’t worry about giving the world more Kataang content 💖 We always welcome it!

For those of you who still want to participate or who are a little bit behind, you can still see the prompts and rules here. Please make sure to @ kataang-week so that we can see them as we won't be tracking the tags as often, and tag your posts with #kataang week. i'm indian-american! as in born in the US to indian parents not indigenous. i can't speak hindi that well but I'm working on it and choose to be validated by the fact that i had my (indian-born, hindi as a first language) dad do the hindi duolingo placement test and he failed it

i don't rlly believe in mbtis but i thought i was an intj until about 10 minutes ago when my friend made me retake it and i am now an entj (though 56 to 44 extroverted to introverted so)

i like to crochet! lil stuffed animals give me catharsis so I've been in the process of crocheting a bunch for my friends and i currently have a bunch of bees and a bi-colored jellyfish named peanut butter for myself

Summary:

Katara reached up and took his face in her hands, felt him soften under her touch. She craned her neck up to press her lips to his cheek, right where a teardrop was rolling down. “I couldn’t let you die either,” she murmured, “not when I could do something to save you.” But Aang drew back at her words, his eyes downcast. “But if I had just been paying attention, if I had just noticed what was going on, you wouldn’t have needed to.” He raised his eyes to hers, and in them she could see the shame, the guilt, the self-blame. “If I had just been a better Avatar,” he said in an anguished whisper, “you wouldn’t have gotten hurt.” And in that moment, she didn’t see the Avatar she knew him to be. Instead, she saw a fifteen-year-old—a fifteen-year-old who shouldn’t even know he was the Avatar, a fifteen-year-old forced from an era of peace to fight in a time of war, a fifteen-year-old with shoulders too slim to bear the weight of the sky and hands too young to hold the weight of the world. - Being the Avatar is a burden as heavy as the weight of the world. thank you @dearestpartnerofgreatness! i've done this before, but it doesn't hurt to do it again hahaha (and with more background info lol)

The Dishonored Blade - an ATLA x League of Legends AU, in which on the Winter Solstice during the Fire Nation Spirit Festival, Zuko must reckon with the sins of his past. this fic was the first niche au/wholly indulgent fic i've ever written for myself, and i consider it my best writing to date. just,,, the themes and lessons weave themselves in so naturally that i can hardly believe myself when i read it back and... i think people should read it, especially since this is probably one of my best depictions of the platonic zukaang relationship.

i don't know who i am (but i won't stop trying) - my Katara-centric fic series that deals with colonialism, cultural appropriation, and cultural genocide. technically a series of two fics, but it serves to view the canon ATLA series through the lens of cultural genocide, a lens that i seldom see within larger fandom. and as self-deprecating i am, i do think that those themes really shine in this series, and it's clearly touched many people who have felt these things personally. overall a great series that should be read altogether!

dreamless dreams - a platonic zukaang fic in which Zuko grapples with the guilt of contributing to the imperialism of the FIre Nation and Aang shows him how to heal from it. i have not seen many fics that truly delve deep into Zuko's guilt and shame and have him grapple with those feelings - a lot of Zuko-favorable fics tend to absolve him of his guilt and it's like eeeee. so this was my first truly in-canon introspection of Zuko's character, and i think i did it well

these sleepless nights we spend (waiting to come home) - my Hakoda Adopts Aang fic, because yes Aang deserves all the good things. i just loved developing their relationship (which we barely see in the series) and drawing parallels between them. overall, a fic well-done!

leaves let go (to fall from the vine) - an underrated one, but an Iroh & Lu Ten fic in which Iroh meets Lu Ten one last time and learns to let go of his grief. this fic was written as an angst starter sentence prompt from @itsmoonpeaches, and as intimidated as i was, i really did enjoy writing their relationship, the parallels between the past of Iroh's & Lu Ten's and the present and future of Iroh's & Zuko's relationship. also this let me write out a small hc i had about Lu Ten, so... can't complain lol.

"help me remember (the ghosts of my past)" (FF.net | AO3): inspired by your amazing "teach me how to live my life (because I can't remember how)" of course, my first real attempt at sitting down and trying to tackle Aang's cultural loss post-Rift trilogy and idk it just holds a very special place in my heart as a POC struggling with feeling connection to my heritage/culture

"Not Your Fault, Never Your Fault" (FF.net | AO3): another (a)angsty one tackling both Aang and Katara's traumas during and post-series, the first non-KW fic i really enjoyed writing and was/am proud of

"Kataang Week 2022: Wait For Me" (FF.net | AO3): Kataang being historically impatient but waiting for each other bc they're worth it <3, KW 2022 as a whole is definitely some of my favorite stuff that I've ever written

"Kataang Week 2022: Just Friends" (FF.net | AO3): good old modern AU friends to lovers Kataang

"KVB 2021: Yin & Yang" (FF.net | AO3): an extremely self-indulgent introspection for me on how and why Katara and Aang work so well together, written for the 2021 Kataang Valentine's Bash

"You got some mail today," she whispered to him once he settled beneath the layers of shed bison fur. He quirked an eyebrow up at her. It was rare that any mail came directly to Air Temple Island when he wasn't home. Avatar-related correspondences usually went straight to City Hall, unless his immediate attention was required.

"Well, I suppose that's not true." Katara turned on her side, stretching her arm behind her to retrieve the gold-accented crimson envelope lying on the side table. "Kuzon got mail," she said as she handed it to Aang.

"Kuzon?"

Katara knew that she and Aang would probably be judged for loving outside of their respective cultures, and she knew that she and Aang would be a real couple, going to balls and nobles' parties together as each other's dates and being asked nosy questions.

What she did not know, however, was just how many hours her boyfriend would spend getting ready for their dates and outings, wanting to look his absolute best for her. She was by no means unappreciative of his efforts if the heat that rose to her cheeks at the sight of him was any indication, but it was quite the inconvenience in a time crunch like the one at hand.

Katara opened an eye from her position lying on the couch, daring to get a glimpse of the clock above their fireplace. 5:56. Lovely. They now had 4 minutes to make a 10-minute trip, not including the time needed to get on and off Appa and through the crowd of reporters that would most definitely be waiting for the Avatar and his girlfriend's first official social function as a couple.

Katara huffed and stood up once again to knock on the door.

"For Tui's sake, Aang, we're going to be late!"

"Hey!" came his muffled voice through the door. "Come on, Katara, you're not supposed to take the spirits' names in vain like that. The monks used to say it's bad luck, you know."

The waterbender resisted the urge to roll her eyes, even if he couldn't see it. "Bad luck would be arriving late to Kuei's ball when we're the guests of honor, sweetie."
