Dear caregivers,

If a little asks you to be their caregiver, take that as the greatest compliment you’ll ever receive. The relationship between a caregiver and a little means a lot more trust than you’d find in any average relationship.

Your little is trusting that you’ll know what they need, that you’ll know what the right decision is, that you’ll always take care of them, that you’ll always do your best. Your little is trusting you not to abuse that power. They’re making themselves vulnerable to you, showing you a side of their personality that’s sensitive and very important to them. They’re trusting you to take care of them when they’re helpless.

For someone to say “I want you to be my caregiver” is a direct translation to “I’m trusting you with my life. I’m trusting you to keep me safe. I’m trusting you to know what I need. I’m trusting you with my decisions. I’m trusting you with my trust.” And that is a gift. Do not take advantage of that.

You slowly open your eyes to see dada laying next to you, still snoozing and dreaming. To the left of you the clock says “7:00”... it’s so early. You remember what day it is and start to get excited! It’s the first day of school! You slowly shake dada awake, “dada....dada wakie up!”. He turns on his side and looks at you sleepily, “good morning darling” he kisses you on the nose. He coos at you “are you excited for the first day of school baby?”. You nod at him as he lifts himself out of the covers and picks you up. You wrap your arms around his neck as he walks toward the closet, he looks at you “okay baby pick out an outfit for the first day”. Your eyes scan the open closet and point to your favourite outfit, dada takes it off the hanger and puts you down so you can change. Dada leaves the room do you don’t get embarrassed. The soft fabric stretches around your tiny body as you pop your head out the top of your shirt. From the other room you hear dada yelling your name “baby! Would you like a ring pop in your lunch?!”. You scurry out of the room in your freshly changed outfit to help dada make your lunch, he sees you and brings you into a huge bear hug “my baby!! You look so adorable in your outfit! We must get going now so we aren’t late~”. You skip to the door while dada finishes packing your bag and slips the straps around your arms. You sit down to put on your shoes but struggle with the laces, dada giggles at you and bends down to tie your shoes for you. Dada stands pack up and pats your head, “ready to go baby?”.

Good morning baby

you come home after a long day of school. you look around for dada but remember he is at work for a few more hours. “Dada.....” you sniffle as you walk into the bedroom. Too tired to play, you go to change out of your school uniform and notice one of dada’s shirts hanging over the bed frame. you grab the shirt and change into it, the shirt goes down to your knees and the sleeves just reach your elbows. Dada’s big shirt feels like a dress on you. You sleepily make your way toward the bed, grabbing your stuffy and flopping on the mattress, quickly drifting to sleep.... a few hours later, you hear dada’s quiet voice. “baby.....babyyy...I’m home darling.” You slowly open your eyes and see dada hovering over you. “Good morning baby! That’s a cute shirt you have on there.” He giggles at you. You snap out of your sleepy trance and cover your face, blushing. you look up at dada through your fingers, “I missed you a lot dada...”

Movie Night

Dada sits on the couch besides you, fiddling with the remote, “you wanted to watch the lion king right baby?” Dada looks at you with soft eyes. You nod at him, impatiently. Dada puts on Disney plus and turns the lights off so the bright screen shines onto his face. “T-thankie dada” you mumble softly into your sleeve, shyly looking at dada. The movie starts to play and you feel yourself getting excited as your favourite characters come to life on the screen. Dada notices you wiggling and giggles at his cute little baby, “I love seeing my darling so happy and little!” He draws you into a hug and smothers your cheek with kisses. he pulls away and pats your head “maybe we should do movie night more often”.
