Daemonic Info Post: Stolas

Some of this post will be ranty, I did wish to be a lot more informal and mature on this post, but because of the actions and misinfo spread around by some people, I have to complain.

Stolas is a daemon (daemonic deity in my UPG being his origins) featured in the Dictionairre Infernal, Liber Officirum Spirituum (as Mistalas, aka Latin meaning "To Initiate one into Witchcraft, the state of"), Psuedomonarcia Daemonium, The Lemegeton of the Lesser Key of Solomon, and his first grimoire appearance is in the Livre des Esperitz with a translation listed in the link below with my sources added.

The English translation is a PDF I made based on one by Jake-Stratton Kent's translation in his book, along with a link to the summary of the Livre des Esperitz.

Grimoire Info:

His first appearance is described as a beautiful man. (Also, this is his first appearance at all as a spirit)

A little more info on his first actual appearance is he had aspects of travel (gives conjurer a speedy horse!) and trade (gives any precious stone when asked) which is by far now outdated.

His second appearance was of a night raven, who can instruct one into witchcraft and necromancy, as well as teach the virtue of herbs and trees, and stones.

The translation of what the night raven could be is now lost in history due to the correlation to the Nactrappt or how Nightjars and Owls (which he later appears mainly as since the association was of such) were also reffered to as "night ravens".

His current one is of an owl or a raven that can take the likeness of a man to teach one astronomy, the virtues of herbs, and gemstones/crystals, aka "precious stones".

The aspects of Travel-giving the conjurer a fast horse, Trade-Giving the conjurer a stone, The appearance of a Beautiful man, and his attributes in later grimoires; Astronomy, Necromancy, and possibly Herbology (can be an attribute if related to agriculture), as well as his first two grimoire names lead me to believe there may be some connection to Hermes, also details in his teachings reflect that of Hermetic Writings. However, Stolas is still his own daemon/entity as goes for all grimoire spirits due to how much they have changed in appearance, and as a reflection on how they're currently venerated. Also, if anyone personally doesn't agree with my connection here that's okay too! David Crowhurst also made a commentary on the possible connection to Hades or Pluton from Greek Mythos in his book Stellas Daemonum

Misinformation to Combat: No, he doesn't have an "angel form" with blue hair and green or blue eyes and cream wings, in fact, like many daemons currently listed in the Ars Goetia, he isn't explicitly described as a fallen angel. Reason I say this is because a post on a blog site describing him as having an "angel form" with that description spread around like wildfire and people just....picked up on it. It isn't wrong if he appears to you as such, I am just saying people saying this is 100% in the texts he appears in.....just isn't. Also, a UPG on him being a fallen angel isn't technically wrong since the view (being a bit vague here) of which most of the grimoires are written in technically supports it.

Also, there is no "war with Jehovah" anyone writing a story on a daemon's past needs to know it is only their UPG, and it's a very cult like narrative to place Jehovah and daemons at war with each other, and it is very, yes Culturally Christian. (I'm reffering to a user on here who actually made some shitty LARPer posts on daemons saying shit like this, and everyone just bought it)

And finally, he isn't explicitly listed as being associated with poisonous plants, but since he is a nature spirit and associated with herbology, I wouldn't consider learning a bit about them from him wrong. [Just don't poison yourself for posession by daemons as that is very disrespectful, especially if your doing it for closed ritual practices such as "Shamanism"]

Personality: >Overall study

He is overall a very generous, kind, patient, and effective mentor. He is also very belevolent (and many of the nature daemons are tbh) and is willing to help one venture into the studies of witchcraft.

Please be mindful he is a powerful being, and like most daemons is a complex being. I really don't think people should invoke/evoke him and go like "haha stupid owl man with those dumb ass long legs" or "haha you look so high on drugs in the dictionairre infernal", basically making dumb jokes on him. If you want to work with him, be willing to listen and learn, and treat him with respect. Also, people on another social site (at least the occult side) doesn't seem to think that way and has people poisoning themselves just to have a regular daemon experience, and also going as far as to encouraging the Lesser Key trappings that are clearly, um bad.

Anyway, sigh, now that that's settled, let me move onto offerings.

Offerings: (Since he is a nature spirit and I personally have given crystals to nature spirits and learned not to do so unless I know what I'm getting it from with ethical sourcing, I would advise against getting these unless ethically sourced or to not do such at all)

Keep in mind, with daemons, their offerings given depends on your own individual UPG with them, and it most likely won't be the same as everyone else's, (also these "lists of offerings other users normally post are their upg as well) but here's my personal ones:

Crystals: Garden Quartz, Mossy Agate, any ethically sourced crystals.

Herbs: Flax (Blue in particular), Yarrow, Rosemary, Thyme

Animals: Ravens, Deer (SPG with a best friend of mine), Owls, Hawks

Misc: Astronomy Imagery, Astrology Imagery, Owl Imagery, (PLEASE DO NOT GIVE HIM NON ETHICALLY SOURCED FEATHERS), Raven Imagery, Clocks (Antique ones, especially the little stopwatches), any animal (Herbivorus) imagery to represent his earthly aspect since he is also of the Earth element given his teachings, artwork of him, Hawk Imagery, Anything naturey you find that is ETHICALLY SOURCED. (This can include abandoned snail shells, fossil rocks, cicada shells, and more, but please make sure it's ethically sourced)

SET YOUR WARDS? COOL NOW SET YOUR BOUNDARIES!!

Ahhhh, boundaries. The thing many people can’t set in both the spiritual and mundane sense. Well, first what IS a boundary?

What is a boundary?

A boundary is an expectation that you may have for someone else. It is a mutual agreement of what is okay and what isn’t. It’s giving and taking consent in a given circumstance. Boundaries are within all types of connections from friends to family to deity. It is important to have boundaries in all these connections to maintain comfort and understanding.

“Toomixedwitch how the fuck do I set boundaries?”

I’m so glad you asked. It all starts with communication. This goes for mundane and spiritual situations! You want to first outline what it is you want to have rules on. I think the biggest one I always suggest for deity work is “Privacy will always be respected.” You might find deity showing up in places that you’d rather they not… the bathroom for example. So to be able to say “hey can you leave?” Is a boundary that’s expected.

When making boundaries you can write them down in your book of shadows or on paper to help you refer back to them. I always recommend for the first month or so communicating with deity on a certain day or time to check up on boundaries and expectations. This can be surrounding offerings, formality, what the work you do together is, if deity can bring other entities/deities into the space (if you’re in training etc) and so on.

If working with a deity who is on the more chaotic side you may want to outline what they can and can’t do. Can deity affect/mess with/play with/talk to your pets or no? Can deity move the stuff in your room or no? Can deity almost burn your house down or not /hj

How do I maintain these boundaries?

As I say, communicate. Schedule a time and day where you use divination or meditation to go through the list again and see how things are going. Is there anything that needs changing or going into more detail over? Is there anything deity would like in return (if the boundary was related to offerings etc)

The biggest one in both spiritual and mundane connections is being able to say no. Obviously, deities and entities will almost always allow you to say no; you always have a choice and will never be scolded for it. But if it helps you, write it down. “I am able to say no”. Sometimes we need a rule that outright says we can. With that said it’s always important to:

Communicate your discomfort

If you aren’t comfortable or you are struggling you are always allowed to say. ALWAYS. “I’m finding this way of offering tricky at the moment. I am still wanting to give offerings to you and I am willing to do it another way. Do you have an alternative?” BOOM it’s called communication and it is necessary in deity work.

“I am struggling mentally and am very busy right now deity, as you know, but I still worship and devote to you completely. Could you guide me through this time as I lessen my prayer and active work? My hard work and perseverance will be devotion to you.”

as a luciferian, one silly little thing I greatly enjoy doing is using phrases of surprise or disdain similar to those of christian origin but with a more dark / demonic flavour to them!

instead of saying "oh lord / my god" or "oh good heavens" or "jesus christ", I often like to say things such as:

"what in belphegor's realm?"

"great son of belial..."

"by lilith's talons!-"

"oh lucifer..."

"what in satan's name?"

I'll admit it's a bit goofy and can catch people off guard at times, but I've been trying to get into the habit of using such phrases rather than those that glorify a god I do not personally follow.

Okay so Hades contacted me, and i have no idea where to start. i've been cruising the Hades tags and there is virtually nothing useful. I've read most (if not all) of his stories, and the ones that include him. Any tips? it came from left field to be ones, always thought it would have been Poseidon.

Omg, hello and welcome to the club!!! :D Personally this makes me very happy, because I know how rewarding a relationship with Hades can be! I will add, also, that you may have a relationship with both Hades and Poseidon if you wish. :)

If you’re interested in strengthening this relationship with Hades, here are some devotional acts you can do:

Money and stones are greatly symbolic of Hades, especially dark, jagged stones (think obsidian, smoky quartz and onyx)

As with all chthonic deities, offerings are usually poured down instead of rising up. This means incense is a less common offering, as you want to offer things that are poured down into the earth, where Hades symbolically resides. I usually offer oils and teas (you may offer wine and juice as well), and pour the physical remains into the earth after ritual.

Also, I know it’s common with heavenly deities to take a sip of the drink before offering it. With chthonic deities, DON’T DO THAT. Offer the entire drink to Them. (I got such a death glare from Hades when I didn’t do this correctly pun intended).

Cleaning up cemeteries and tending to old graves are GREAT versions of philanthropic worship!

If you believe in the Hellenistic underworld, you may want to offer money to the spirits of the dead to let them pass on

You may make an altar to Hades easily. Black/grey candles, stones, money, any bones (or representations of bones) you have, and items passed down in your family (a form of ancestral worship) work well on the altar!

You may create an altar to spirits of the dead or your ancestors too if you wish!

Mint and pomegranate are sacred to Hades :)

Remember that the element of earth is sacred to Hades as well. Using dirt, herbs and any other earth elemental magic works in devotion to Him.

If you communicate to spirits, treat them kindly and help them move on

And finally, but most importantly, talk to Him. Talk to Him silently, out loud in front of an altar, or write to Him in a journal (which I do all the time). Hades will respond to you again when He believes the time is right.

how to deal with a witchy burnout

most of us have been there. we lose our touch with the craft and don’t feel like doing much. we feel too tired and exhausted to put effort in it and sometimes we feels like there’s no point.

here are some tips on how to get out of this sticky situation! 🌙

drink tea ✨

yes, you heard me! drinking teas with specific herbs (like chamomile for sleep, lavender for anxiety, etc.) will help you get in tune with herbal magick. you can also stir your tea clockwise to bring forward something (like good energy or calmness) or add a sigil on the bottom with some honey (doesn’t have to be perfect). 🍵✨🌸

nature walk ✨

get in tune with those energies outside! i always find a walk on the grass helps pick up my mood (especially barefoot!!). envision the energies from the earth flowing into your body 🌱🌎🍃

witchy movie ✨

sometimes, we just need a little inspo to bring us back to our craft. watching witchy movies can bring back that spark into us! some great movies i recommend are:

start off with one card if more than that feels like it would tire you. it’s ok! you can do one in the morning by asking a simple question like “what should i focus on today?” 🔮✨💜

incorporate some magick into the food you eat! this isn’t hard at all, especially since we all eat food everyday. simply add an intent to an herb or spice and then add it into your food. for example, add cinnamon onto your oatmeal, with your intent being that you will have abundance 🥐🍦🍩

songs ✨

songs are great to get you back into magick! listen to pagan music, celtic songs, or just look up “witchcraft songs,” “wiccan songs,” or “pagan songs” on spotify🌛🤍🌜

gratitude ✨

this one’s real simple! when you wake up, thank the universe that you got to live to see another day. you can even journal it. breathe in the air and think of how grateful you are that you’re able to do that. soak in the sun’s rays and feel the heat. 🌞🌼💛

it’s ok to take breaks! nothing wrong with that. it’s human. appreciate yourself as a person. remember, you are magickal and divine no matter how many burnouts you have. burnouts happen to nearly everyone and it’s completely normal! 🍄🐥🌈

They are a symbol for the pagan holiday known as Green day which takes back power from saint Patrick's day since saint patrick was a monster.....

The Celtic faith saw a great value in the power of threes so even the common three leaf clover was seen as a protective symbol.

It's believed by many pagans that the fae are linked with clovers but I've found little proof of this other then family superstitious beliefs.
