Forget girl dinner, overworked hag lunch is where it’s at. That’s where you eat unadulterated deli meat and sliced cheese in your car with the window shades up and the seat all the way back so no one talks to you.

I kinda see some of buck looking like an idiot as relating partly to ADHD, because I'm exactly the same, I can be book smart but I have zero brain to mouth filter and sometimes I'm not even aware of what I'm saying until a conversation is over. Like he's not stupid but because he's impulsive he blurts out things that might seem odd. I also think part of why the fandom see him as stupid is because he's got such a sunny and extroverted persona (not necessarily personality but on the exterior he's very cheerful), I bet if he was more introverted then less people would think he was stupid.
Yeah, he just gets ahead of himself sometimes, and doesn’t always stop to fully consider the possible consequences of what he is doing or saying. He probably lies awake at night at times like 😳 “wtffff why did I say that????” 😂
HOWEVER, I also headcanon that part of the self-protective shell he built for Buck is actually a pretty skilled social manipulator. Like when you think back to the beginning, there was this scene where Henry was talking about how they don’t really know much about Bobby, but what’s funny is that they also didn’t know much about Buck, either. They didn’t even know he had a sister. Buck makes himself seem easy to know, and he’s good at redirecting a conversation when he really wants to, and I personally believe that there are times that he leans into the Dumb Jock stereotype as a means of avoiding more difficult matters. The core firefam has come to know him well enough to see past that most times for the last few years, but I genuinely think that Buck knows what people’s first impression of him could be, and he sometimes uses that to his advantage.

Goddamnit, now I’m thinking about Buck and Tommy bonding over being unspeakably lonely as young men, and it leading them to a job with a “brotherhood” like firefighters, and now into each other’s lives, with Buck having catalyzed the 118 firefam and Tommy’s expressed wish to be part.

No but also!! People fully ignore Buck was on his own for YEARS before he landed in LA. And during those years the only person he could rely on was himself.
That in itself explains a lot about his character, but also (to me) it just speaks on how smart Buck actually is! He was able to adapt to whatever circumstances and all without exterior help.
I don’t know, I’ve always seen Buck was crazy smart. He’s so energetic and so impulsive that it can make him look like a typical dumb blond but the man is really smart. And it frustrates me the way some fans (and even some people on the show) doesn’t see it
You 🤝 Me
Anon I am patting your head and offering you a baked good of your choice.
I’ve complained about this at length before but I don’t feel like digging it up at the moment. Buck was entirely on his own for years. Like we talk about Lou saying Tommy was a lonely young man, SO WAS BUCK. Buck was technically homeless for six years, drifting and untethered, taking short term jobs and probably living out of his car for stretches of time, neither calling home nor being called. His postcards to Maddie were his only attachment to anything.
I’ve headcanoned before that his primary hobby is reading because it’s an ideal hobby for a drifter, there are take-a-book-leave-a-book little libraries all over and at most campgrounds. It takes very little space, and doesn’t require a high speed data plan, which would have been expensive, and also the data networks in 2012-2018 were not what they are now, and even now they don’t cover the whole country.
BUCK IS SMART. He can be pragmatic. He’s good with money. He is interested in a lot of different things, just not fucking pop culture and that’s okay! He has a deep well of emotional intelligence, he is always noticing when something is ‘off’ with the people around him. He might not know cars in general but I bet he knows his jeep inside out, and that’s probably why he sticks with the brand (I hc that he had to have lost the car Maddie gave him in the tsunami). He probably was not taking it to the shop for repairs when he was on the road working as a bartender or a ranch hand. He probably read the Chilton manual cover to cover and has parts memorized.
The show likes Buck’s himbo moments for easy laughs, but that’s not all he is, and I’ll stand on this soapbox soliloquizing forever! ❤️
