6 days ago I made a post on Instagram in support of freedom for Hong Kong. This is a 7 year old art that I’ve posted many times before without issue. The only difference is this time I made the post in support of Hong Kong fighting for freedom against the oppressive Chinese government.
The next day, my post was removed for “hate speech”. This isn’t Instagram’s fault. The Chinese government paid attackers to mass report me, thus triggering the algorithm to automatically remove my post. I appealed the removal and my art was restored.
However, ever since that day, I’ve been shadowbanned as well and I’m still shadowbanned. No doubt due to the same abuse of report button by the paid attackers. The Chinese government have figure out a way to censor and control free speech even outside of their country.
Now people who aren’t already a follower on Instagram will not see my art. All of my free Hong Kong hashtags don’t show up anymore in search. This is how the Chinese government silence those who support freedom.
This is why the people of Hong Kong are fighting so hard to keep their freedom. No one in the free world should have to live under this level of abuse and censorship.
You can help me fight this injustice. Repost my art on Instagram with the hashtags #FreeHongKong #StandWithHongKong #HongKongProtest and share the story. Even if they censor me, the Chinese government can’t censor us all.

there is nothing inherently valuable about tradition. if it’s good, then it’s worth doing on it’s own merits. but something is not worth doing just based on it being “the way things are” alone

The difference between vegans telling people to stop eating meat & carnists telling people to just eat what they want and ignore us is that there are actual lives and victims at stake here.
Animals are suffering and dying, the fuckin planet is dying, and eating “whatever you want” and ignoring vegans won’t solve any of this.
This isn’t a simple disagreement, it’s an issue of morality, sustainability, and ethics.

Warren and Tyagi demonstrated that buying common luxury items wasn’t the issue for most Americans. The problem was the fixed costs, the things that are difficult to cut back on. Housing, health care, and education cost the average family 75 percent of their discretionary income in the 2000s. The comparable figure in 1973: 50 percent. Indeed, studies demonstrate that the quickest way to land in bankruptcy court was not by buying the latest Apple computer but through medical expenses, job loss, foreclosure, and divorce.
Giving up a latte or another such small extravagance in this environment wasn’t going to be enough. Yet the personal finance shills continued to tell people their problems were mostly of their own making.

People say vegans are smug and self-righteous.
In my eyes taking an animal’s life only because you like the taste and you believe you are mentally and morally superior to it is smug and self-righteous.
In my eyes continuing to eat enormous amounts of meat that is destroying the planet and causing mass deforestation of the amazon, just because you don’t want to change, is smug and self-righteous.
In my eyes wearing another animal’s skin or fur, because it makes you look/feel wealthy or luxurious, is smug and self-righteous.
In my eyes buying beauty products that have to be rubbed into the eyes of rabbits just so you can look good or buy the latest cosmetic trend is smug and self-righteous.
In my eyes using horses so you can gamble and have a fun day out, no matter how much they might suffer, is smug and self-righteous.

No one is a fan of being out in the heat. Especially once it starts to hit the high 80s and up. Imagine spending up to 9 hours on the streets of Old Sacramento in those hot temperatures. The only relief you feel from the baking sun is when you cart around passengers through the streets and just happen to pass through the shadows of a few tall buildings. That’s what the horses from Top Hand Ranch go through every summer. These horses don’t only work during the summer, they work all year long. During the scorching heat of California summers and the chill of our winters.
One of the biggest questions I have is: what is being offered to you? What do you get from a carriage ride that you won’t get by just walking around? Most carriage rides stick to the Old Sac area, where everything is already within easy walking distance. And if you choose to ride the horse carriage, you will be traveling the same path you took while searching for a parking spot. Roll down your window during that drive and your experience will be no different than the carriage ride. This leaves the rides as nothing more than a novelty. But unlike the novelty shops covering Old Sac, carriage rides have a victim. Choosing to walk instead might not feel like much, but every step you take is one less that a horse would be forced to take for you.

Despite the conservation facade that @SacramentoZoo hides behind, many animals such as the Reticulated and Masai Giraffes are kept captive due to their popularity with visitors. They say that habits are beginning to become threatened, but they have no interest in combating this. There is a breeding program set up for the Giraffes, however reintroduction into habitats isn’t something being considered and there is nothing to suggest that the problems affecting these habitats are being addressed either.
While the Sacramento Zoo has done real conservation work, it doesn’t change the fact that they are there to profit off the captivity of these animals. Endangered or thriving in the wild, as long as they are popular with guests, the Sac Zoo wants them.
“So, we have housed giraffe here at the Zoo for many years because they are a fan favorite with guests, they are unique in their adaptations, and are the tallest land mammal.” - Sac Zoo Representative

Don’t get me wrong, it is our responsibility to bring species out of endangerment. Especially when we are the reason they are endangered in the first place. Many wild chimps fall victim to hunters who sell the meat to the rich in Central Africa. Others are victim to poachers who snatch baby chimps to sell as pets around the world. That being said, no so called Conservation Program like that of the Sacramento Zoo justifies confining an animal and its group to an area barely larger than most houses. What we need are more organizations like Save The Chimps and the Jane Goodall Institute who work to protect chimps, and in the case of Jane Goodall Institute, work to protect the natural habitats of the chimpanzee.
