may i ask your opinion on using plastic bins as housing for snakes rather than glass aquariums? I’ve always wanted a snake but I’m disabled and moving a heavy glass cage just isn’t feasible for me. I thought about using a plastic bin, provided it’s modified for proper airflow, but I’m not sure on if it would be a good idea or not.
Hey friend!
I absolutely love plastic bin housing for so many reasons. They're cheaper, lighter, hold heat and humidity better, are way more customizable, can be more secure than a standard open-top glass terrarium, don't break as easily, and so on and so forth. As long as the bin is of an appropriate size and you have proper heating and lighting (both very easy to do!) then I say yaaasssss!
The downside is that most plastic tubs aren't as clear as glass so you won't be able to watch your buddy do snake stuff as easily. Small trade-off, totally worth it in my opinion. Worth noting that the demi-clear plastic can add an additional sense of cover and privacy for your snake resulting in increased well-being, so that can also be a pro as well as a con. Also plastic tubs aren't exactly aesthetic from the outside, if that's something you care about.
If you want the best of both worlds, consider custom plastic caging like Vision or Animal Plastics. These cages are a bit spendy but they're light, easy to customize, will have clear acrylic doors for easy viewing, very secure, and you can usually choose a color that more or less works with your home decor.
I hope this helps you to choose the option that works best for your budget and lifestyle, and that you have a lot of fun outfitting and decorating your snake's home regardless of what shape it takes!
