Prompt Scenerio: Jamal gives Wilder MC a dance lesson.

Jamal blinks. “You jest.”

I shake my head.

“But you’re a noble lady! Surely there were lessons! Balls! Clandestine trips to the local dance hall!” His voices rises with disbelief and something approaching outrage.

“No, never.” I shift, starting to feel rather embarrassed. “Well, sometimes at parties – but I was never allowed to join in.”

“It’s a crime,” Jamal says. “A crime most heinous. Allow me to rectify this– this unforgivable mistake in your upbringing.”

I suppose it has always intrigued me, in some way. As a child I remember spinning my way across my bedroom; curtsying and accepting the outstretched hand of an imaginary partner; watching Uncle Makram and Aunt Lamya at a party and envying even their stilted, passionless steps.

Yet I hesitate.

“N-no. I’d feel silly. It is too late for me to learn, I’m afraid.”

“Please don’t say that.” Jamal’s eyes lose their playful glint; turn sad. “Do you truly believe it is too late?”

“I’ll be clumsy. I’ll tread on your toes.” Something in those mournful eyes makes me relent, clasping his hand and getting into position. “You must not laugh at me.”

“I wouldn’t,” he says, and I know it’s the truth.

He starts moving just our arms, teasing my stiff body into looseness and ease. Then he steps forward. I step back without thinking and feel a jolt of twinkling pleasure to realise – I am dancing.

“After you’ve mastered this,” Jamal says, that pleasure house gleam back in his eye. “I’ll teach you how I dance.”

The river glitters under the moonlight. Jamal rushes towards it.

He kneels and, cupping some water in his hands, starts to wash his face.

I run after him, hissing as loud as I dare.

MC: “Jamal, we don’t have time!”

He ignores me, gathering more water to wash the grime and dirt from his neck, then his arms.

JAMAL “To think that it would come to this.”

JAMAL: “Washing myself in dirty river water.”

When he starts to unravel his hair, I feel actual panic taking hold.

MC: “Please don’t start washing your hair!”

He doesn’t listen to me. When he talks, he isn’t even talking to me – not really.

JAMAL: “This is such a mess.”

JAMAL: “Do you think, if I pinched myself, this whole day might turn out to have been a bad dream?”

CHOICE A: I am thinking only insulting things.

MC: “I think you’re the vainest idiot I’ve ever met.”

JAMAL: “…Hm?”

He finally looks up at me, vacantly. I don’t think he heard me.

CHOICE B: I think we need to move on.

MC: “I think we’re not safe here. We have to keep moving.”

He looks up at me, brow furrowing.

Finally, he seems to understand the danger–

JAMAL “You could do with a wash, yourself.”

MC: “No, thank you! There are bigger concerns–”

My words abandon me when Jamal’s slender hand comes up to cup my face.

MC: “…!”

He rubs his thumb over my cheek once, twice, then again. I open my mouth but say nothing.

Finally, he seems satisfied. He smiles a kind, intimate smile, before finally withdrawing his hand.

JAMAL: “There. That was the worst of it.”

JAMAL: “You’re beautiful again.”

He sucks in a sharp breath.

I’ve never seen Bahadur so flustered, or so informal.

I do as he says and sit on a large rock by the side of the path.

BAHADUR: “Forgive me, my lady.”

Before I can ask what he means, he is kneeling before me, my already swelling ankle in his hands.

He lowers his head. I gasp.
