“G-Got m-me in the sh-shoulder, i-it’s n-nothing,” Cahir chattered.

“You always say it’s nothing. And then you fall off your horse. Let’s get you to the cave quickly,” Geralt said worriedly, taking in the pale complexion and unsteady stance of his younger comrade. “Regis will probably have a nice fire going by now, and he’ll have a look at that shoulder of yours.”

They started walking briskly up the slope after Milva and Angoulême, who had almost reached the cave by now, but soon Cahir slowed and stumbled and would have fallen if Geralt had not grabbed him just in time. Supported by the Witcher, Cahir managed to get halfway up the hillside, but then he collapsed to the ground, breathing heavily, his face as white as the snow around them and obviously in a lot of pain now. With a grunt, Geralt heaved the injured, moaning young man onto his back and started to carry him. It was not that far anymore, but ever since they had set out from Toussaint through snow and ice, his old knee injury had acted up again, obviously not appreciating the cold and hardships of the journey. He gritted his teeth against the stabs of pain and, with a distinct sense of déjà-vu, continued uphill.

Self-recs are encouraged

There is no length minimum or maximum, but fanfic under 10k or podfic under 30 minutes tend to be more digestible for our event. But if you have an epic long story to share that you think people will love, send it along!

AO3: Less than 20 comments (not including author responses).

Tumblr, twitter, YouTube, ect.: Less than 500 likes/reblogs/comments. 

Older Works: sometimes older works have more comments but haven’t seen love in a while

Any advice for a writer who's thinking they should start replying to comments but has no idea how to reply?

First of all, I’m glad to hear you’re thinking about it, but I hope we’re not “peer pressuring” you into it with these asks and answers. So step one is going to be deciding if it’s something you’re ready to do.

Know that this is the same sort of experience readers have when they need to decide if they’re going to comment. Writing a fic and putting it out there is stressful and anxiety-inducing on a scale of “many strangers are going to see this.” Writing a comment or reply is stressful and anxiety-inducing on the level of “one specific person is going to see this and they can identify me to a certain degree and things just got more personal”

Start off the same way we recommend readers start off: simply. Say thanks or I’m glad you liked it or leave a smiley face or something like that. All of the “how to comment” advice applies to “how to reply to comments” too

If you’re feeling comfortable, you can answer questions or reveal little details that didn’t make it into the fic. Readers love it when you tell them where you were when you wrote something or who inspired your OC, just like writers love to hear about where readers read the story or what they said to their best friend about it. 

Replying can take time and energy and you might not have much of either of those things, so don’t put constraints on yourself about time limits or length of replies. Set yourself up for success. Just like you enjoy getting comments on 2 year old fics, readers (I’ve been told in moments when I feel guilty for waiting so long to reply) enjoy getting replies on old comments. And sometimes they go back and reread the fic and comment again :)
