Just read about an OSR idea on Reddit:
"If you're rolling you've already lost."
I've been thinking this way for decades without having it put into words before. Obviously, rolling for combat and actions is unavoidable, even desirable, in an RPG. But the best players often find ways to creatively avoid rolling—not avoid taking chances, because they don't know how I'm going to rule, but avoiding the cold, hard contingency of a difficult roll and instead trying to convince me they're being clever and entertaining.
RPGs are, amongst many other things, puzzle solving games. In real life, you can solve a puzzle box, or you can smash it. But smashing it can fail, or damage the contents. In a game, you can brute force your way out of a situation, or you can finesse it. And if the latter is an option, it's usually the better one.

Hey, that's hilarious! Oh wait—that's Gary Gygax's 16-year-old daughter. Well. Like much of 70s/80s D&D, this did not age well.

Gelatinous Cubes are green because they are magically evolved from photosynthetic cyanobacteria that ended up in a dungeon and developed mobility, carniverousness, and enough cognition to solve labyrinths.
What scientists do not understand is how they maintain a roughly cubic shape or why, since a Gelatinous Lozenge would be more efficient.
It's very funny to me that the stereotypical gelatinous cube is bright fucking green when the monster itself is almost perfectly transparent. Like its gimmick is that it's a monster that imitates an empty 10x10 hallway. How many people have fallen victim to gelatinous cubes because they "know" that the ooze is bright green and so don't bother to check the suspiciously clean corridor in front of them.

AD&D 1e Players Handbook weirdness:
When the DM informs you that your character has a urinary tract infection, and if they roll an 8 on a d8 it's fatal.
