What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
Thank you for asking! That is an interesting question, and something that happens often for me in fics (my outlines rarely survive intact).
The first one that comes to mind:
I wrote about four full versions of White Rabbit before I finally realized what needed to happen in it. The beginning remained the same, with Viktor and Yuuri crossing paths in their everyday lives via Chrisâs party, and Yuuri being avoidant, drunk, and annoyed.
But the next part! Ugh!
I had Viktor visiting the club to talk in all kinds of scenarios. From coordination with his cousin, the clubâs owner (which felt bad), to showing up during Yuuriâs break outside (which also felt bad), to some convoluted way they could bump into each other again (again, felt bad).
Months of frustration. These are not characters where itâs hard to get them to kiss each other, and yet. The whole energy of the fic was off.
Then I started thinking about Viktor more, at his willingness and joy to do grand gestures. I thought about the ways he (and Yuuri!) like to show affection, through actions instead of words.
Viktor would put on the same outfit, place himself on equal ground, and go from there.
The rest of the fic was very easy to write, after that! One afternoon or so.
Another one I can think of is With Two Hands. The original outline had a different main villain and did not include them traveling through space to Yuuriâs family. But as I was writing Yuuri, it made sense politically for him to be sent away, and I wrote his suggestion that Viktor come along expecting it to be just a suggestion.
But then it made sense! Itâs would be safer off of Rothys! The only people with them would be a few guards, and the âcourtingâ angle would absolutely sell. Viktor wasnât about to miss a rare chance like that!!
They were supposed to end up at a remote summer palace instead, and the villain was a rival family.
Then I had to kind of invent a new villain instead, in the form of one of Viktorâs guards, but there wasnât any foreshadowing for it so as a writer I still feel bad and weird about it. Even though I really enjoyed them getting a chance to go on that trip. I also regret not getting to go deeper into of touch-starved Viktor was. Real Life Events in 2020 crashed over right as that fic was being written and it had an effect.
Sorry for the long reply. I rarely talk about this kind of thing, and Iâm not sure if itâs super coherent. But I am thankful for the opportunity to talk!!
In summary: Victuuri single-handedly destroy many outlines and somehow Iâm still surprised each time.
THEY BOTH JUST LOVE SURPRISES SO MUCH FGJHHHGF

Iâve written many multichapter fics in my 7 years in this fandom, and the last chapter of each is always a big hurdle, usually with a big delay.
I write my stories knowing how they will end, but the weight of otherâs expectations and the worry Iâll disappoint can be paralyzing. Fear is poison to creativity, and I am just a regular, anxious person. Itâs a struggle. Please bear with me.

Ok, posted on ao3 đ
I don't think this short piece is worth posting on AO3, and it isn't part of a larger fic at this time. Tumblr seems like a good place to post?

Summary: On your sixteenth birthday, it's traditional to write a letter to your soulmate. Yuuri struggles.
Yuuriâs mind is blank, like the paper before him.Â
A letter to his soulmate seems about as real as a letter to Santa Claus, but he has to write something, if only to avoid disappointing his parents.Â
Hello. I donât think youâre real.
No, thatâs not right.
Yuuri sets down his pen again and looks out the window. Darkness, crickets chirping; itâs late, even for him. He pushes his glasses up and buries his head in his arms, willing the right words to come.
Hello. The thought of you makes me want to run into the sea.
Not very romantic.Â
Itâs a flaw, taking things too seriously. Agonizing over tasks that others brush through with ease. Thatâs part of the reason Yuuri has such a hard time connecting with others. He doesnât want to make the wrong move, to show off his weak side.
Itâs not insecurity. Yuuri is aware of his own strength as an athlete, and his academic performance is good too. He doesnât consider himself particularly ugly or especially beautiful; a fair middle-ground.Â
Hello.Â
Outside the window, gulls call to each other, and in the distance he can hear the crash of ocean waves.Â
Iâm not perfect, but I will work to surprise you. If your heart is like mine, I hope you will understand.
Yuuri folds up the paper and dutifully sets it underneath his pillow.

Turns out there was more of this fic to write. Here is Viktor's half. I will likely add the full thing to ao3.
âVityaâhere. Itâs still your birthday for a few hours.â
Viktor almost signs the paper out of habit, poised to try one of the variations heâs practiced with a small poodle drawing to the right. It wouldnât do to have the same mark every time, after all. Too predictable.Â
âDonât do it here, take it back to your room and at least try to give it some thought,â Yakov scolds. His usual gruff tone is softened by the medal Viktor has just won.
Viktor blinks. Around them, the hustle and bustle of skaters and their coaches wrapping up for the day continues. It isnât normal autograph paper. Instead, the paper in his hand is thick and textured, with gold streaks in the weave.
With Nationals looming so large, his birthday faded to the background.
Upon returning to his room, Viktor sets the paper down on the bland hotel desk, and doesnât touch it again until after heâs reviewed video of his performances and written out all the areas still ripe for improvement. Then he switches tasks.
Soulmate, he writes, intentionally in English. Language does not matter, and he might as well get more practice. The word sounds romantic.
There he pauses.Â
There is a time limit to Viktorâs ambition, a countdown to the end of his skating career ticking loud and constant. Even if he is lucky enough to avoid injury, his body will only hold up for so long, so he has made some deliberate choices: long practices, calibrated nutrition, and a meticulously-kept schedule that doesnât allow for idle or social time.
Wait for me. When the time is right, I promise to devote it all to you.
No use dwelling. The future, life, love: they are big, abstract. Â
Viktor places the folded sheet under his pillow and does not think about it again for a decade. At twenty-six, it keeps him awake.
I don't think this short piece is worth posting on AO3, and it isn't part of a larger fic at this time. Tumblr seems like a good place to post?
