I'm back on my Ghost Hunt bullshit and I just need people to appreciate all the different kinds of love and affection that are so openly displayed by all the characters through the original novels, the manga, and the anime (even if the anime ends before The Big Reveal.)

It hit me more than ever this read through just how much of an "Oh, that makes sense," moment the others go through when they realize Naru has been grieving Gene the whole time and how it affected his personality. Leaving aside Mai and Naru's personal dynamic at that point, the way Hosho, Ayako, John and Yasu show such genuine sympathy (despite just mercilessly dragging his ass when they confronted him about being Oliver Davis) shows how much they care, and what they do to express it, and the biggest part of that is making sure he knows he's not alone and he never has been, even after his parents show up. The Davis' pinpoint Hosho and Ayako as the two other adults who've supported Naru through thick and thin (when they didn't know him and had no obligation to keep coming when he called, because it takes so much for Naru to ask for help) and their gratitude is palpable on the page.

And that's not even getting into the way that, through all her own feelings, Mai tries to re-assured Masako that Naru never hated her for knowing immediately about Gene-- he just wasn't ready for *anyone* to know-- and yet, he took her comb in The Bloodstained Labyrinth as his own way of making sure she was still alive, knowing at any moment he could be seeing her death the way he saw Gene's--which shows how glad in *some way* he was that one person knew about Gene; knew why Naru was in Japan at all.

Ayako is another character whose affection for the others shines through, most obviously in Forbidden Past-time and Haunted Mansion. She drives everyone back to her apartment *literally drenched in blood*, lets them shower (and deals with Hosho sitting around in just a towel and shorts while his clothes wash) and then ends up passed out with John in sheer exhaustion. Then there's her sheer, stubborn love in Haunted Mansion, despite how (really, unfairly) scathing Hosho was of her almost for the whole book (and at least some of that is because he pushed her to do the exorcism instead of waiting for John, and there's got to be so much guilt there--he's more angry at himself than he is her, and I think, on this read-through, she knows that.)

What comes through for Naru, and really everyone by the end is that grief is just love trying to remember what it looks like in the dark, and that shared grief--like a chain of people holding hands, groping for the light switch--helps love remember itself just that much easier.

I've never seen a writer capture that sentiment better than Ono Fuyumi. Nothing her characters do ever feels out of character or beyond reason, especially once you find out what Naru's real deal is.

a Ghost Hunt drabble

Noll fell into the plush client chair as if weighed down by leaden anchor, mug swinging by the handle in his loose grip.

"Tell me" — Martin spared a glance at his son — "you brought coffee." The Research Administrative Supervisor was at least a binder deep into his notes on the Thoreau case and would very much have liked a fresh cup of coffee — if his work would ever allow him such a reprieve.

Noll frowned. "I require a new office."

Martin sighed; he knew it was a long shot. He would also be a liar if he said he wasn't expecting this visit. Frankly, he was surprised Noll made it through the week without complaining about it.

"I require a vacation," Martin said, leaning back in his chair and feeling the bones in his neck pop. "We don't always get what we want, Noll."

Noll adjusted himself in the chair, changing tact. "Why is Madoka's office in Pratt Laboratory?"

Martin eyed the empty mug still hanging loosely in his son's grip. "Because she is a field specialist."

"So am I—"

"Let me rephrase," Martin interrupted. "Madoka is active in the field."

The skin around Noll's eyes tightened and Martin knew he hit a nerve. He braced for the storm.

"How do you expect me to be active in the field if you never give me any cases!" Noll was on his feet now, pacing. "I've been back for weeks and I'm still answering emails and filing paperwork. I'm not an intern!"

"You might as well be," Martin said. "You've been... away... for two years, Noll. Things have changed. Policies have changed. You can't expect to just jump back into—"

"I never stopped."

Their voices echoed for a moment before the office fell silent once again. Martin scanned his son's face, unsure if it was anger or grief he found in the pinch between his eyebrows. It was true. Japan had been less of a bereavement period (as it had more or less been expected to be) and more of a business trip. Martin himself just finished filing incident reports for the last case where his son had thought it apt to one-v-one a god.

He shook his head. "Things changed in the time you were gone, Noll. Until you're back up to speed you will not be on any cases. And you are not moving into Pratt Laboratory. There isn't any room left if I wanted to."

"I—" Noll readjusted his grip on the mug, forlorn. After a moment, he sighed. "Fine."

"Fine?"

"I'll stay in the north wing—"

"That's the spirit."

—until such time that I become an active field member."

Martin rolled his eyes. They would cross that bridge when they came to it. At the moment there was a more pressing matter. "You know you could always just get an electric kettle. Bring the one from the house."

His son paused in the doorway. "...okay."

"Go on then."

Noll nodded, shutting the door with a soft click. Martin had only just returned to his notes when the door swung open again. "You did this on purpose."

He grinned up at Noll. "Did what?"

Noll only glared.

"I figured this might be about the trips to the break room."

"Then move me closer."

"No. It's good for you to get up every once and a while. You sit in that chair any longer, you'll become one."

Noll made a noise of indignation and swung the door shut behind him.

"Hey!" Martin called through the glass as Noll stomped toward the break room. "Grab me some coffee while you're in there!"

RYAN: [Narration] Today on Buzzfeed Unsolved, we discuss the mysterious death of Dr. Eugene Davis.

SHANE: Eugene?

RYAN: Yeah, Eugene.

SHANE: I only know, like, one other Eugene. When was this?

RYAN: Like, recent. If you’d let me get through the intro…

SHANE: Fine, fine. Go on.

RYAN: As I was saying, today we discuss the mysterious death of Dr. Eugene Davis, one of the most renowned mediums of our time.

SHANE: Medium. Right.

RYAN: Yes, medium. Dr. Davis, known as Gene to his family, has been called the perfect medium–no other person has thus far been able to so accurately communicate with other spirits. Not only could he channel on near demand, but he also showed, on numerous occasions, speaking fluently in languages he did not know.

SHANE: Oh, sure. Like that can’t be faked. This bullshit has been literally faked for hundreds of years. Picking up a few lines in French isn’t exactly convincing. I’ve said it before. All psychics are bullshit.

RYAN: Yeah, fine, maybe not. But how about entire conversations with loved ones in Russian? Or Arabic? Can–can you do that?

SHANE: Just cause–okay, well, you can learn languages. There are people out there who have learned dozens of languages over their life–

RYAN: Did I mention he was sixteen?

SHANE: …

RYAN: Yeah, think about that a bit more. He’s seventeen and apparently he fluently speaks, uh, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean… English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portugese, Russian, Arabic… Like, people have tried to disprove this kid and–

SHANE: Wait you, said Dr. Eugene Davis.

RYAN: Yeah–

SHANE: Doctor?

RYAN: We’ll get to that.

SHANE: Yeah. Okay. I call bullshit now. This is already ridiculous.

RYAN: It gets weirder.

SHANE: Of course it does.
