I need to become more adept at french animation.
So if we wanted to watch some French animation, what films would you suggest?
Tumblr media
the Triplets of Belleville is about an elderly woman searching for her son who was kidnapped in the middle of a Tour de France race. It’s largely free of dialogue, but the sound effects and such are wonderful. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature—it lost to Finding Nemo.
Tumblr media
A Cat in Paris is about a young girl and her cat who discover mysteries in the course of one night. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but it lost to Rango.
Tumblr media
Persepolis is based on an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi about her early life in Iran. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it lost to Ratatouille.
Tumblr media
the Illusionist is about an aging magician and an imaginative young girl who form a father/daughter relationship. It was also nominated for a Best Animation Oscar, but lost to Toy Story 3.
Tumblr media
The Rabbi’s Cat is a story about a cat who swallows a parrot and gains the ability to speak like a human. It is set in 1920’s Algeria.
Tumblr media
Ernest & Celestine is the adorable story about a big bear and a little mouse who forge an unlikely friendship. It was also nominated for an Oscar in Best Animated Picture, but lost to Frozen.
Tumblr media
Kirikou and the Sorceress is a story inspired by West African folklore that tells the story of Kirikou, a boy who was born with the ability to walk and talk, who saves his people from an evil witch. The film was popular enough to spawn sequels and a stage adaptation.
Tumblr media
A Monster in Paris is a 3D animated musical film that is reaaaaalllly loosely based on the Phantom of the Opera. It’s set in 1910 and is about, surprisingly, a monster that lives in Paris, and his love for a young singer.
Tumblr media
The King and the Mockingbird is an 80’s film about a cruel king titled Charles V + III = VIII + VIII = XVI, who is obsessed with a young shepherdess, and whose attempts to capture the young girl are thwarted by a mockingbird whose wife the King had previously killed.
Those are probably the most famous of the feature length animated films.
But the animated short films are just as glorious. Here’s a compilation of a bunch of short films and I can link you to others as well.
Sorry for the long answer but I just really love French animation.

Poke’mon Go:  A Generational Thought
I was around 10 when a little tv show that I didn’t know came from another country began popping up around the same time I got home from school on Sacramento’s UPN affiliate channel 31.  It was about some kid with massive eyes and a can do spirit and the bratty little electric rodent that he got stuck with on a crazy journey that no kid of his age should ever be allowed to go on.  Not yet had KIDSWB grabbed up the series and the fever hadn’t quite yet reached these shores when I saw Poke’mon for the first time but like every other kid, I was hooked.  I cried at Bye Bye Butterfree, I was angry at Charmander’s bastard of a trainer who left him all alone on that rock, and don’t get me started on how cool the Squirtle Squad was.
I was a massive mark for everything that came out, I had red, blue, and yellow and traded poke’mon everyday at recess at a backstop near the back of Mable Barron Elementary.  I spent so much of my mother’s money on the TCG and even joined a league and got the first 8 badges.  I found my remaining cards a few months ago and looked through them and smiled at how that was the ONLY reason I got up at 7am on weekends to watch some cartoons, and then run off to Toys R Us (who I know work for actually) to battle other people with my hand made decks and foil Blastoise.  I loved everything about it, until Johto, new poke’mon, new places, new gyms, it looked nice but I had hit puberty and there were far more.....important things to do.
I left the poke’mmunity behind at that point and didn’t follow it at all until I got back into the gaming forums and facebook groups about three years ago but never found myself interested in joining my fellow 20-somethings in catching them all.  Nothing pulled me out of my nostalgia for the original 151, crying at that moment in the First Movie (my first midnight movie) and owning the soundtrack, my original Elite Four beating team of Arcanine, Gyrados, Alakazam, Venusaur, Jolteon, and Golem.  Yep, I was that guy.  The one who said “nothing compares to the original”.
Then, the Go-splosion happened.  Poke’mon Go came out in north america and everyone and their mother was downloading it and catching them.  I didn’t download immediately cause I had no wifi and was already over my limit.  That was rectified quickly and I snapped it up.  Walked around my less then safe neighborhood at 2am (not my brightest moment honestly but I caught me a growlithe damnit).  I was kinda meh on the experience, partially because most of the poke’mon were behind neighbors fences or in fenced in areas.  Also, it’s a mobile game.
Mobile games never keep my attention, I’ve tried your flappy and angry birds, bejeweled, tetris, threes, etc and they’ve all had short tenures on my phones over the years then tossed due to disinterest or microtransactions.
Anyway, back to the Go.  And I did just that.  I went to a few parks and everywhere I saw there were people catching and discussing poke’mon and I found myself enjoying the talking more than the catching.  What really made me happy for some strange reason was the ten years old getting excited about a magikarp near a pond and a sandshrew near the sandbox.  Here I was this somewhat jaded nearly 30 year old who scoffed at anything after the Kanto region was smiling at the fact that these little kids were excited about something I was at that age and I couldn’t for the life of me realize why at the moment.
It took a drive and a bit of thought to realize why that brought joy to me.  When it did I had to first let go of being the current “youth generation” and realize that I am now the current generation of adults and that something from my generation has not only survived the minefield that is pop culture relevance (anyone remember street sharks? the maui shark? Earthworm Jim?) but has thrived into the next generation.  Something that was awesome for me at 10 is awesome for kids that are now 10.  That is amazingly cool, Poke’mon is still relevant and while my time in the games and community (unless they release a remasterd Red/Blue/Yellow that was just the first 151) is done as an active member but it’s safely in the hands of the next generation of Trainers who get to do what we could only pretend to do.  They can actually catch em all and that is beautiful.

Shit people have forgotten about the Bush Era:
Free Speech Zones, which were a real thing and not a plot element in a particularly ham-handed dystopian novel.
The phrase “hidey hole.”
Watching a budget surplus become a massive deficit that was bigger than it even looked because the White House was just like, “Okay, we’ll just not put the wars on the books and just ask for more money for those every few months.”
The sheer number of times Alberto Gonzalez said, “I don’t recall,” to Congress regarding war crimes and human rights violations.
“…now watch this drive.”
Mission Accomplished.
“The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence,” “yellowcake uranium,” Condoleeza’s “mushroom clouds” fearmongering, and all the other bullshit we were fed to get into Iraq.
The President of the United States said so many stupid things that there were one-a-day calendars consisting of an individual quote for each day of the year. They didn’t all have the exact same quotes.

The TPP and Dojinshi
Awhile ago I posted an article to my facebook (before I had a tumblr) from Anime News Network(http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-11-15/japan-considers-revising-copyright-law-due-to-trans-pacific-partnership/.95418) regarding the japanese parliament discussing the Trans Pacific Partnership and it's effects on something like Comiket and the Dojinishi (fan made comics that are sold at events like comiket that are self published) would be in danger of disappearing due to the change to copyright/intellectual property laws.  While the TPP is about as helpful as NAFTA (cause of the strange way democratic presidents trade partnerships are always terrible for individuals but great for corporations while republican presidents trade agreements are the exact opposite cause politics make sense) Shinzo Abe released a statement relieving a lot of worries regarding the state of dojinishi which is how every manga creator gets their start.  They go from dojinishi to working as assistants to their own creations.  Below is his statement in all. "Dojinishi don't compete in the market with the original works and don't damage the original creator's profits, so they are shinkokuzai.  So that fan made work like parodies don't wither away, we're limiting [non-shinkokuzai] to things that earn profits, wholly appropriate the original work, and inappropriately damage the right's holder's rights ---they must fulfill all of these conditions." Basically it will be very hard to sue any dojinishi maker because the burden of proof in this regard would lay with the corporation suing as they'd have to prove that not just one of these things occurred but all. Since dojinishi has been going for decades with all sorts of stories from just fan stories to pornographic stories all sold by the creators at comiket there's no paper trail showing sales except if you looked through every sellers boxes and knew what they're initial stock was.  Basically it's a work around that allows Dojinishi to exist in the same fair use area that it always has.  If only a site like Youtube would do something similar there'd be no need for things like the recent hashtag of #wtfu or "Where's the Fair Use" after a swath of content claims hit review channels last month.

Riding the First Bus to Riverdale:  a short bit on why you should read the new Archie comic.
Last month I picked up Archie Vol. 1 by Mark Waid, Fiona Staples, Annie Wu, et. al.  Heard the buzz, heard the hype, decided to give it a go.  As someone who never really got into the previous Archie work when I got into comics, I figured Waid’s revamp and relaunch of the whole Riverdale gang is as good a place to dive in as any.  I’m very glad I did.  While it’s modernized, cell phones, modern langauge, a noticeable absence of sweater vests; the heart and soul of what made Archie a perfect all ages title is very much here.  Waid builds the classic love triangle while wrapping this first set of stories around the breakup event of Archie and tomboy next door Betty and uses his lovelorn heart to add a wonderfully fun supporting cast and second love interest in the rich girl who moves to town Veronica.
I got this hoping it would be a good pallet cleanser after the heavier, far more serious and bleak books I normally buy and with crisp clean wonderfully light hearted art work and story telling by a fantastic team of Waid and frankly any artist they put on the book, it did everything I hoped and had me wanting to jump pages to find out just what was the “Lipstick incident” without going the route of shock and modern “grittyness” that has overtaken so many rebirths, revamps, and relaunches in recent years.
Archie was always a piece of Americana, the hijinks, the baffonery, the sweet natured love story.  It’s all here without a hint of some sort of out of left field shocking twist (waid even mentions how he was never interested in bringing it back with a shocking “veronica’s gonna be a teenage mom” storyline or something like that) to try and drive up sales.  In a world of dark, brooding characters, shock twists, and still de-compressed story telling it’s nice to have a book of six one and done stories all tied together by overarching plot threads done by a master of the medium while keeping the heart and soul of the Riverdale gang exactly where they should be.

Can I Get to Know You First?
Been thinking about this for awhile and I'm just gonna say it.When I heard JJ Abrams say he wants a gay character in star wars it annoyed me.  It's like Batwoman all over again.  We're not gonna know if the character is anything other then gay.  That's not creating interesting characters, that's pandering to the twitterverse.  I use Batwoman as an example cause when she was introduced we all pretty much knew Cassandra Cain (the then batgirl) was being phased out for a less asian more white redheaded character and it sucked.  When she was introduced with "Her name is Kate Kane and she's a lipstick lesbian."   It was all "woah a lesbian bat character" but we got no other information about her ACTUAL CHARACTER.  Characters you create are just like humans, they're not just one trait, they're many.  An interesting character has layers and as we quickly found out Kate Kane didn't have those.  When a company introduces a character by pointing out ethnicity or sexual orientation it's nothing but a headline grab.  Cassandra had 73 issues of her own comic (the first batgirl solo title and with the new 52 batgirl title ending soon still the longest running) to become a character and build a fan base.  We didn't even know who her mother was, all we knew was she was a street urchin during the "No Man's Land" storyarc (the earthquake that struck gotham).  Gradually fed bits and pieces about her character, her cruel training under her father that slowly evolved into a strange father/daughter dynamic, her slowly built friendship with Stephanie Brown and eventually earning the respect of Bruce were engaging to read.  Kate Kane never got the chance to grow on us due to her introduction being poorly conceived from the announcement to her tiny appearance in 52.  While the Greg Rucka penned issues of Detective Comics that focused on her were fantastic and gave the character depth that never translated over to her other appearance and her own title and she's now relegated to bit parts and cameos.  To end the rant, create characters the way you meet people.  Rarely the first thing you find out about someone is their sexual orientation, start with background, write in first person as the character until you find their voice and then check off the other stuff and never pander to fucking Twitter.

Young Justice Needs a Season 3 (and you can now help that happen)
Quick PSA Young Justice was an awesome animated series from Greg Wiseman (gargoyles) that kept the spirit of Justice League, Batman:  the Animated Series, Superman:  the Animated Series, and Batman Beyond.  It was cut short by the bullshit that cartoon network pulled on it's time slot but if you watch seasons 1 and 2 (currently on netflix streaming) it could get picked up by Netflix for the third season it so rightfully deserves.  Please watch these two amazing seasons so that Wiseman can finish his story with these characters.  It will be worth your time.

Oscar Night Picks!!!!  Yes, I enjoy the Oscars :P
Oscars came out, there were snubs, shocker.  Straight Outta Compton should've gotten more then it did (namely a best picture nod).  Sicario deserved a best picture nod and where is Benicio Del Toro for supporting actor.  Same for Will Smith for Concussion.  Ryan Coogler will one day get his due for his directing ability.   I pick the winners for my own enjoyment, it's something I've done every year, kinda a tradition between myself and the old man.  If you're curious about one of my weird little quirks as a geek then partake in my unprofessional guestimations about a simple little awards show in Hollywood.
Disclaimer before I start with the actual picks:  FURY ROAD SHOULD WIN IT ALL :) FOR ALL THE OTHERS ARE NEITHER SHINY OR CHROME!!!!!!
The Picks Picture-The Martian Lead Actor- Leonardo Dicaprio (The Revenant) Lead Actress- Brie Larson (Room) Supporting Actor- Sylvester Stallone (Creed) Supporting Actress- Jennifer Jason Leigh (Hateful Eight) Director- George Miller (Mad Max:  Fury Road) Original Screenplay- Ex Machina (I'd be perfectly happy if Straight Outta Compton won though) Adapted Screenplay- The Martian Animated Feature- Inside Out Foreign Film (aka random shot in the dark pick)- Son of Saul Cinematography- Hateful Eight Editing- Mad Max:  Fury Road Production Design- Mad Max:  Fury Road (cause those frankencars are better then the sets in any movie this year) Costume Design- The Revenant Makeup and Hairstyling- The Revenant Original Score- Ennio Morricone (Hateful Eight) Original Song- "Writings on the Wall" (Spectre) Sound Mixing- Mad Max:  Fury Road Sound Editing- Mad Max:  Fury Road Visual Effects- Star Wars Episode 7:  The Force Awakens

Fuckin Cancer
The death of an actor, musician, or artist of other description is just that, another mortal leaving this plane of existence.  What that person created that stayed with us is what makes them special and they're passing a tragic occasion.   Die Hard is a film I probably saw once so it never attached to me like the overarch of a villainous looking professor draped in black robes did.  The voice and icy demeanor of Professor Snape in the first potter film contrasted to his (at the time) very strange protecting of the children from the werewolf to the villainy of his doings in the sixth film to the ultimate reveal and beautifully done reason for all his doings in the 8th film struck me over the journey I took through those films.  A tenderness hidden under sarcasm in Dogma.  Alan Rickman left a mark on my life through his tenure at Hogwarts as the potions professor.  The truest path is often painful, in retrospect is what I gathered from that set films and as I've gotten older it's become quite true.   Bowie, a name that brings many terms to the forefront.  Icon of music, lifestyle, fashion didn't really do much for me in his music.  Those influenced by him read like a greatest hits track from my teen years.  Without that music I wouldn't be alive today.  Would those artists have created that music the same way without being inspired by the man born David Jones?  I've watched friends begin the long trudge through the stages of grief over the death of a man they never knew but changed their life for the better the first time they heard him.  Someone who can inspire that much and blazed such a trail in his wake is worthy of mourning. Lemmy, the only one that when you hear about he lived you're amazed he got to 70.  He lived, breathed, and fucked rock n roll.  His thundering bass in Ace of Spades for me is an iconic punk style and his larger then life stories you read in interviews and his insane work ethic (motorhead toured almost as relentlessly as Social Distortion) are respectable and a tad crazy.  Yet when Ozzy tells you that it was a crazy fuckin sight you're willing to believe it was true.  A true rock n roll road warrior who gave no fucks and spoke his mind yet never resorted to talking shit on other bands.
I debated doing this post for awhile, seeing the posts by others and the grief they've gone through have caused me to gather my thoughts on these three very quickly and just put something out into the ether.

Was August when the first went missing; always the lake, always the same time of night, always no trace or trail to follow.  When I learned the truth of why and just how this world works was the day I lost my faith in the love of a god and learned that responsibility is a terrible thing.
No Idea what that’ll turn into, just spur of the moment little blurb after I saw this pic that Katyuska Moonfox reblogged.
