War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all, but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.

And with great confidence in our caucus, I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress. For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect, and I'm grateful that so many are ready and willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility.

She and I chopped peppers for the salad while Paul cooked spaghetti. And, yes, after the horned-serpent incident, I'd sworn off spaghetti, but pasta is like a best friend: you can't stay mad at it forever

If soulmates exist, they're not found, they're made. People meet, they get a good feeling, and then they get to work building a relationship.

"I just didn't know if you would stay long." He smiled, leaning against the table. "I'll stay as long as you need, Marinette." Something about that made her laugh, just a small sound that burst out from her chest as if she herself hadn't even expected it. Her cheeks turned a bright pink, and she turned away, setting the bag of candles and the flowers on the counter. She opened up the cupboards, finding a large enough mason jar, and then busied herself with taking the paper off the flowers. The crackling of the paper filled up the silence of the room, and it felt a little bit like Marinette was purposefully taking a longer time than needed to put the flowers in the jar.

But I'm held here both by the hovercraft walls and the same force that holds the loved ones of the dying. How often I've seen them, ringed around our kitchen table and I thought, Why don't they leave? Why do they stay to watch? And now I know. It's because you have no choice.

Stories matter — telling them, sharing them, preserving them, changing them, learning from them, and escaping with and through them. We learn about ourselves and the world that we live in through fiction just as much as through facts. Empathy, perception, and understanding are never wasted. All libraries are a gateway into other worlds, including the past — and the future.

The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others unless the decent people connected to them recognize that religion has no place in public policy. They must learn to make their views known without trying to make their views the only alternatives. The great decisions of Government cannot be dictated by the concerns of religious factions. This was true in the days of Madison, and it is just as true today. We have succeeded for 205 years in keeping the affairs of state separate from the uncompromising idealism of religious groups and we mustn't stop now. To retreat from that separation would violate the principles of conservatism and the values upon which the framers built this democratic republic.

Melancholic? I think everyone becomes melancholy when they start to think. Intuitively, we're quite optimistic, but the more we think, the more melancholy we become. No, I don't think I'm melancholic, it's just that if you live your life trying to find the meaning in things, you very often find life slightly disappointing. But it's worth the effort. The alternative is to go through life as if it were a series of unconnected events, which I would find unbelievably dull. It's fine when you're five, but not when you're 54.

"You put too much faith in me, Harry," she said, though she gave a small, reluctant smile. "I am not as perfect as you think." "You're not as much of a mess as you think you are, either," he countered, easily. "And I don't think you are perfect. I think you are amazing." "I think you are amazing as well," she said, looking up at him.
