Unconscious New York City @jdmalatgallery What a fabulous exhibition, so much fun ! So much work ! 7 paintings ! 7 paintings ! 21 paintings really, I painted 21 paintings for this exhibition and only picked 7 , the very best 7. Two gigantic ones that were a true challenge to make ! I meditated, used the power of visualization, and told myself let’s go for everything ! So much effort to make this exhibition but it was truly worth it ! This painting is filled with texture! I used crushed granite embedded on the paint, creating this incredibly thick mixture that recalls the earth’s crust. The materiality infuses another dimension to the work. The gesture is now rooted in stones, paint becomes lava and we are witnesses to the geographical formation of a river. Painting as topography. I was amazed to realize how every idea if properly executed could lead to make a work of art. It could come from anywhere, it seemed that with the proper research one could justify anything. I grew suspect of this condition and began questioning the idea of making art, if anything could be art how could anyone be sure of its relevance, of its importance ? I initiated a process to find a way of making art that couldn’t be doubted. If ideas were not the path there had to be another source to arrive to something meaningful. I began to experiment with impulse and approached the canvas as abstract expressionists did before me but I kept finding the paintings still too connected to conscious decisions therefore making them vulnerable to the ever-changing nature of ideas. I wanted something deeper, something that I couldn’t change at will. I went back to surrealist automatism, a technique that wasn’t fully developed neither by surrealist painters nor by abstract expressionists. In order to arrive to the point where the unconscious can take control of the brush I have to enter a state of trance. I have to concentrate for a couple of hours standing in front of the canvas to clear the mind of any thoughts. There is a moment in this intense process where consciousness shuts down giving way to the unconscious mind, in this moment I enter a trance and begin to paint, it is only when I regain consciousness that I lift the brush. It must be resolved in a single brushstroke in order to guarantee that no conscious decision takes part in the process. Black paint and raw canvas are not discursive, they are not charged with meaning by themselves but rather they exist only to render the gesture visible. It is my absolute pleasure to invite you to my next solo exhibition titled UNCONSCIOUS at @jdmalatgallery NEW YORK. It will take place from September 9 trough October 1st at 507 W 27th Street in Chelsea. I developed a painting technique trough an active meditation that’s practiced in front of the canvas with the brush in my hands. The objective is of course to make a painting using only my unconscious brain. In this meditation I relax myself actively, emptying all ideas related to painting and relying entirely on the idea that my unconscious is capable of making the painting. Excluding conscious decisions what is left are organic forms. It is not me, Santiago Parra the individual that has come to be trough 36 years in this planet but rather it is the organ that constitutes my brain that makes the painting. It’s the great fight against establishment but at the same time the need for rules, how can we be free but safe ? In painting there is this struggle, the need for something safe, the idea we can make a painting that we can somehow replicate like the great one we did before but that’s the difficulty : what worked before won’t work now, rules that where valid before are not valid now. It seems like we are standing in a completely new world every time we make a painting but nevertheless we crave for a formula, something that would save us from this absurdity of making art every time like we never did it before, every time to stand before the task without tools or know how and expect to do something great, every time to surrender control when in our lives all we are looking for is control.
