Where should i start with terry pratchett? I also dont know if im going to read all of his books, so what would you recommend as a good hook into his writing?
Hey, so apparently where i have been looking for my asks is... not... where they are? I don't know what I've been doing wrong but I have no idea when you sent this, I'm just seeing it now! Sorry!
My default recommendation for a starting point is Monstrous Regiment - it strikes the right balance of giving you a really good snapshot of Pratchett at his best (with the disclaimer that his best is quite a solid chunk of Discworld), standing alone better than almost any of the others (they all stand alone well to one degree or another, but MR's main plot is completely separate from Ankh-Morpork or any of our usual protagonists, while still giving us a solid introduction to Vimes and some of the Watch, and it's fun to go back from there to see them develop).
I went: one Rincewind book in high school that I found completely forgettable and may not have finished (probably the first), the Wee Free Men in high school which I enjoyed but the guy who had recommended both didn’t think I'd like the rest of Discworld if I liked Tiffany and not Rincewind (lmfaooooooo this kid was my high school academic nemesis frenemy sorry I have to laugh at how terrible that take is in retrospect). I don't consider these first forays particularly important. When I really got into Discworld, I went: Pyramids, Small Gods, Monstrous Regiment, Going Postal. (The Truth would have been a good addition to this reading order, right before Monstrous Regiment, and you see a lot of the same characters there in those two, as well.) At the time, they were all standalones - Making Money wasn't out yet - and that introduction gave me a really good snapshot of Pratchett's range, so if you're only looking to dip a toe in at first, I might try that. Pyramids and Small Gods are, I think, around where he really starts to hit his stride, so I got to go from "yeah these are really good!" to "wow these are INCREDIBLE" and that got me excited to read more.
From there, I went to the Watch series, which is what I often recommend if someone wants a specific series to start with, but you mostly can't go wrong. The Watch is very parody-noir, the Witches are more parody-fantasy retelling, Tiffany Aching is the best YA on Earth, and Moist is a fucking blast. I wouldn't recommend starting with Rincewind, personally - I'm only reading those ones now - and I don't think I would have enjoyed the DEATH books nearly as much if I hadn't already been thoroughly familiar with Discworld, though I know a lot of people love them as a starting point. (Now that I think of it, I feel like I may have read one of them among the ones I listed when I started and just not remembered it at all. I read them more recently and loved them, and I don't know if it was the book or me. They're much quieter than the others, in some ways. They're good comfort reads.)
Anyway, I hope you got to Discworld before I got to this ask, but if not, I hope it helps!

hi frank! im reading The Northern Caves for the first time and im really enjoying it so far. do you have any insight or thoughts about The Northern Caves, now that its been eight years since its completion?
Hi!
(And thanks – I've gotten a few new followers since I posted an ask like this a while ago so I'll try to get back to answering asks)
In my opinion, The Northern Caves is pretty darn great. The whole series (which is the first in a very long time to get published) is very good. The Northern Caves itself is my favorite of the books, although even then it's a close call. Even The Southern Caves has its moments. (For the uninitiated, "The Southern Caves" is my personal name for the series – I'm really embarrassed to have forgotten that for the duration of the hiatus. That said, I think it was a mistake, because The Southern Caves would be an amazing series title, and there's a reason that I have used it for the titles of three different books)
Anyway, it's great. I have a lot of thoughts on it, but I don't know if they'd be worth posting on tumblr. This is a long post – it starts with a quick summary of the book series and then covers The Northern Caves in more detail, but the main points are:
1. If you liked ASoIaF, you'll like these books. The worldbuilding is better in these books, and the political machinations better. It has a lot more to offer if you enjoy that sort of thing than the ASOIAF series did. On a practical level, in these books the author does a good job of writing non-ASOIAF material without making it clunky. The story isn't particularly compelling (it's much better when you're reading the whole series – I can't recommend it without spoilers), but that doesn't stop it from being a pleasure to read, because it's actually good fun.
2. If you're looking for a "big book" to binge, these might be the right things for you. The books are over 700 pages and each is divided into two parts, which are mostly standalone stories. You can read them in any order. I recommend starting at the beginning – you will definitely need to go all the way through the books before reading them, even if you stop and start and start again and read some more, because the books are very dense and it will take a while to figure out all the plot connections.
It takes a long time because the stories are very dense, but I feel like the stories really need to be read from beginning to end. If you don't care about all the connections – which is fine if you don't and this isn't a book series that you plan to spend much time with, but it's also fine if you aren't a huge fan and this is what the author wrote when they weren't feeling quite good enough to write better – the stories have to be read all the way through. So I recommend reading the books in that spirit, even if you could probably skip some of them.
If you want the full experience, read the whole thing. If you can't do that, read it all the way through before reading the other books in the series.
3. I really liked The Northern Caves as I mentioned before. It's got very long, very "dense" episodes, with the characters mostly being introduced in one episode and then being much less relevant the next episode, often for years. This isn't just the case for a few characters – it's a very common plot element of the series. The author seems to be a real stickler for how much plot he can get into per story, with the stories themselves getting "spun out" and "filled in" as they go along. It's very "the worldbuilding is here to help" about it, and a lot of the story does feel like it's a necessary part of the worldbuilding (the "history of civilization" bit is a big part of this). But if you have a lot of free time and a lot of patience, you can read these books in their entirety as they were written. Or, if you are very impatient, you can read them in bite-sized pieces (I do this for example). (I've actually posted an ask here about a similar problem I had with another series a while ago – I would get to the end of a story and then realize that there was more story that I hadn't gotten to, and it was much better, and it would just be fun to go back and read the previous chapter in detail, even if it meant going back to the start and "starting over" – The Northern Caves is great for this because it has these very lengthy, densely plotted "episodes," so reading some parts in depth really is the best way to go).
Again, my personal opinion. You might like the books less if you read them "chronologically," but I think the worldbuilding is really strong and makes these books worth reading at all – for me, it outweighs the somewhat awkward pacing.
4. I mentioned that the author writes a very long series of "episodes," but I haven't mentioned how long the episodes are until now, and I have to admit that it is a bit of a tease. The Northern Caves has some episodes that are shorter than others and a couple of longer ones. The Northern Caves as a whole is about 1.7 million words. I think the average length of episodes is about 35,000 words or so, so that is about 45 short books (not counting the "books 1" or the prologue).
The average length of these episodes is not very long at all, in comparison to some published novels, but the series is dense enough that it takes a long time to read.
5. I read The Northern Caves in one big swoop. It was one of the big things that got me interested in this series and made me like it, so I'm sort of biased, I guess. But my impression is that many other people read it in sections – in the "normal" way, the way where you read them in "the order they were published," and in a way that involves skipping a lot of things, because there is a lot of stuff. I read The Northern Caves straight through in about 10 days, when I got really into it, and I got a lot out of it. I would read it again, but slower (which is normal for me, because I'm usually in a much more relaxed reading state after a long hiatus than when I'm reading it for the first time).
(I am reading The Southern Caves right now; it's been about a week and a half for me. It's slower going for me at this point. I probably won't finish this series anytime soon)
So anyway, I hope this gives you an idea of what to expect! If you like any of these things, chances are it is a good bet that you'll like these books. It's worth checking out if you don't know much about the author and are thinking about it. (That is, I'm not going to make you promise you have enough patience/time/etc. to read this, but I feel like I should say some good things.)

The northanger abbey anon here, again I agree with your thoughts on the novel, some of the things were rushed especially with ours antagonists so to speak, but it was a fun read and the only thing I knew about it is that it was a parody kinda of gothic novels that were popular in that time so I did feel like I was missing some sort of a context even tho from the writing I can imagine what kind of tropes gothic novels had back then lol so I didn't really go in expecting anything and was not disappointed, I loved Cathrine immediately (the whole reading books and living inside your own head is something I can relate to even now) and by the end I did love henry. Like you said in the novel he wasn't condescending or angry with Cathrine at any point especially not when she revealed her thoughts about his father, he was rather careful not to upset her further (after that conversation in his mother's room when they saw each other again at diner he was gentle with her). So they really did that wrong in the movie, even if I did enjoy it, the cast was good and Cathrine in her riding outfit >>> but we didn't see his house and dogs in the adaptation I believe so that's another minus in my book. I would love a major studio adaptation tho, it would be fun and the whole gothic aesthetic could be done beautifully. I do like p&p movie adaptation the most but they also had the most money lol tho I have to say the most recent emma one was a bit disappointing to me, that was when I had expectations and wanted more action but it was rather calm. The persuasion netflix made was terrible in terms of it not being an adaptation, even tho it was marketed as such, but rather loosely based on the novel. I def recommend reading persuasion tho, I loved the romance of it all even if wenthworth was annoying (he kinda had the right to be but idc).
thank you for reaching out again and sorry for the late reply <3
I also felt i wasn't "in the know" lol but it really didn't affect the experience all that much, you get the impression of what novels she's talking about anyways cause she's so detailed about it 😄
catherine is so relatable it's not even funny, that's why i can't be too upset with her about anything haha and henry being so gentle (again, when he's not being a troll) and firm in his intentions makes him very swoon-worthy (im not over the knowledge of fabrics and flowers, im so happy he was written that way aaa)
I wasnt aware he had his own house the first time I replied to you, I learned shortly after that northanger abbey wasn't his home which makes sense but that's what the book is called so I made assumptions 😗 I'd say best part about it might be that it's fairly far away from his dad's home lol but everything you said you liked about it is a big plus for sure 🤭
(short intermission to show the riding outfit in question, she looks amazing)
Tumblr media
the characters were different from how I had imagined them but I could tell they were quite well portrayed even if they didnt fit my personal idea because isabella? that casting and execution were perfect. it helped me see how my interpretation was lacking in some ways because that's not how I had imagined the general either but seeing his behaviour on screen made the book descriptions click. but considering how they butchered that particular scene and with it both catherine and Henry's characterizations, I don't hold the directors vision at the ultimate regard lol
a major studio adaptation without excessive cgi that knows what makes the book good and manages to translate it for the movie or series format would be amazing, we can hope someone comes back to this one because it isn't austens most popular book but there is sooo much potential here!! and we can get all the dogs hahah
i like p&p 2005 but truly only as a standalone thing, comparing it to the book experience is not for me, that was more fun to do with the 1995 series because they were so accurate (though when it comes to looks no one has made me go "yes, perfect casting"); as for emma, I found it quite dull iirc, I was mostly hyped to see the actor who plays adam in sex education was in the role of harriet's (and my) beloved farmer boy😂 the colours were beautiful and the actors great but I think it felt too long and as if nothing really was happenin; I know I didn't watch all the adaptations for that one so I can't pick a fave but thats why I'd just recommend clueless 🫢
now that you mention it, I saw videos about that persuasion adaptation, I mightve even listened to one and spoiled myself but it was quite long ago so I should be fine haha, I feel like not understanding the source material and trying to fit bad tropes into it like circular shapes into rectangle holes is what makes these types of adaptations flop so bad, im sorry you had to experience it, I'd probably save it as a trash watch but at least aware that it's that
and I definitely plan on it! i think I might take my time because I don't have any main novels to read after it, I'll have to search for lady susan and other stories (that's the name of the compilation I've seen if I'm not mistaken); i trust your opinion, I'll try to be more forgiving of mister main lead though I get irritated easily 😂
thank you for sm for sharing 🥰💗💞💓💗💖💕

Read Darkness Within all in one sitting last night and then passed out so here are my scattered thoughts i wrote down as i read, (afterthoughts in parenthesis)
Darkness Within Spoilers, obv
UGH GOD THE SECOND HAND EMBARRESMENT FROM SQUIRREL FAKE FLIRTING WITH ASHFUR IT HURTS
Just remembered Sandynose died and got a small boost of happiness (will Hawkwing and Plumwillow ever be allowed to talk again now? I mean probly not b/c they aren’t protags and non-protags don’t rly have friends but I can hope. Sorry, Hawkwhing and Plumwillow’s short-lived friendship in Hawkwings Journey was one of the last times I felt something)
Ghost fleas lol
Mothwing: i’m rude now. (but more importantly, Fuck Tigerheartstar for forcing his son to be around the cat that hurt him so badly, like he HAS to know how upset everyone is regarding Shadowsight and his accidentally helping the imposter, and he’s making him be the sole one to tend to him??? There is NO REASON Puddleshine couldn’t have done it. You think Puddleshine is going to try and murder someone?? )
Oh no don't make this a traveling book, and a ROOTBRISTLE traveling book this is going to be insufferable
BACON AND EGGS
Lightleap Is Good (Hey didn’t Shadowsight have another sister? lets be real we all knew Pouncekit was going to end up as the forgettable 3rd one)
Bristlefrost’s crush continues to feel unnatural to me. It’s like she’s grasping at straws romanticizing the most generic things.....wow....I love how ur just so...bare minimum competent....being polite to the loner we came all this way to ask for help like any somewhat reasonable person would....How admirable...I love the way you just *clenches fist* exhibit some basic traits of loyalty and skill that literally every warrior has (I s2g I’m this close to head canon-ing Bristle as a clueless aromantic who doesn't understand what romance is actually suppose to feel like so she just looks at feelings of low-bar admiration and assumes “oh I guess this is that “romantic attraction” everyone’s always talking about? guess I must be in love???” because both her crushes have felt out of nowhere and like. Idk fake/forced sounding like she’s just telling me that that she’s In Love Now while I continue to not actually feel it at all from her end. I know it’s just that I hate the way Erin’s write female characters in love but this head-canon makes me laugh)
Got scared because I thought they were going to villainize Spotfur for not wanting kits for a minute, but also excited at the concept of maybe exploring a female character that doesn’t want to be a mother, but it turns out she was just pulling a Sparkpelt and actually DID want the kits all along and was only hesitant because she’s sad. Shrug oh well.  (the only female character in warriors that was distinctly upset about pregnancy and motherhood was Lizardstripe and as we all know she was eeeeeevil and abusive and “overly ambitious” because why else would you not come around to being happy about motherhood?? YES I’M STILL SALTY ABOUT YELLOWFANG’S SECRET, BAD BOOK)  Whatever it’s fine so long as Spot doesn’t lose her rebel leader spirit forever and default to “soft mom” personality for the rest of her life, I gotta have hope because I actually like Bristle and Spot’s current relationship. Also I am actually very grateful they never made Bristle resentful at Spot for getting with her crush, as lots of middle grade/YA media has a very bad habit of demonizing female romantic “competition” and its super gross, so I rly do like that Bristlefrost is so protective and caring towards her instead. )
This series is trying to tell me that Rootspring is actually Big but I refuse to accept that. he has dumb scrawny bitch energy and we all know it
Sunrise: “Thunderclan may be better with a new leader” lol go off (i mean........they right tho...It’s unfortunate that the tension in this whole plot is a bit dampened by the fact that i DO in fact want bramble to die v badly. I don’t even have special hatred for him, I’m just bored of him.)
Yes Lionblaze beat the shit out of Ashfur
*HOLY SHIT THAT’S FUCKED!!!! (I wrote this in reference to the ghost summoning scene, this was all I could manage at the time, that scene was WILD and I am VIBING WITH THE HORROR OF IT ALL)
* Brashfur: Oh yeah? Could Ashfur fake THIS? *stands up with slightly better posture* Shadowsight: oh damn you got me there...... (asdfhhfhhgh im sorry that was really funny, how did that prove anything?? ONLY A ~REAL~ WARRIOR COULD STAND UP STRAIGHT WE ALL KNOW ASHFUR IS INCAPABLE OF GOOD POSTURE!)
End of the book: *LAUGHING NERVOUSLY* WHAT THE FUCK??? (I thought he was just gonna kill Squirrelflight right there holy shit can you imagine the RIOTS that would ensue in the wake of all this Squirrel/Bramble discourse I was so scared for a second.
But it’s fine, she just....went to super hell instead......Warriors has come so far lmao WHAT IS HAPPENING
Final Notes:
*On Mothwing, I don’t think her behavior struck me as “CHARACTER BUTCHERING” as much as it did for other people? I mean.....Warriors fans will say that literally any time a character does ANYTHING less then perfectly nice I think her actions just seemed that much harsher because we are reading from Shadowsight’s POV, and Shadowsight is taking everything 10x more personally right now (understandably so, but Mothwing isn’t inside his head) she wasn’t trying to hurt him. Also... like... Shadowsight DID get his name too early. It’s not Mothwing’s job to put his feelings above everything else, she’s not even his mentor, Puddleshine on the other hand, as his main mentor, I don’t understand what his deal is ignoring Shadowsight, that’s not how you help an apprentice but I suppose I chalk many of his mistakes up to also not being the most experienced medicine cat (he barely even had his own mentor.) Maybe he’s distant because he feels guilty and actually blames himself for not guiding Shadowsight better?? the two of them haven’t communicated about it yet so idk
any way I give Mothwing a pass to be a little short tempered right now as a cat who has had her abilities periodically questioned all her life no matter how hard she works or how much experience she has, just because she doesn’t vibe with the spiritual cult side of the clans, I can understand why she’s a bit defensive of being questioned and frustrated watching so much hurt happen Yet Again due to reliance on StarClan visions over common sense, and I for one still stan her for slandering StarClan and refusing to accept Mistystar’s bullshit banishing like everyone else. Sometimes a character is at the end of their rope and can’t manage to be 100% nice 24/7 and that’s maybe not inherently bad writing? idk just my hot take. At a certain point we all gotta reckon with the fact that our perception of most popular supporting characters in heavily colored by fanon and we can’t always get mad at the authors for not adhering to it
*The sisters magic shit is my fav worldbuilding warriors has had in AGES, I love the way it’s described and it actually feels like it adds something to this world. I love this horror imagery with the ghosts, very excited for that.
*still won’t be thrilled if Ashfur is working alone, because his motive doesn’t make sense right now. I mean the trying to get Squilf thing, sure, whatever, but the “I will make everyone pay for what they did to me”???? cause like?? Who??? they didn’t do anything to him?? Ashfur’s grievance was very specifically JUST Squilf. He has no other cause for revenge, he had no other beef or complaints about the clans to my knowledge? The cat that killed him is dead, and she’s like, the only other one that I could see as having “wronged” him?? I guess he also didn’t like Firestar much according to Graystripe’s Vow (and on account of how willing he was to kill him w/ Hawkfrost) but Firestar is ALSO dead. I don’t understand his angle. Will have to see last 2 books to judge i suppose.
*All in all I am interested to see where this is going!! but also the pacing as I feared is becoming a major issue. It’s better then ending the main conflict on book 3 like Vision of Shadows did, but omg. Hardly anything happened in all these pages. I realized I was over half way through and nothing about the situation had actually CHANGED or advanced at all in all that time. Similar to the past 2 books which I believe could have been combined, this plot felt like it should have been the first half of a book. Discussing whether or not to kill the imposter isn’t much of a standalone plot, it’s just the set up to a plot. Finding the sisters didn’t need to be a whole long thing, the debates about the Imposters fate didn’t need to be repeated 10 times, all those chapters illustrating that “Shadowsight is sad” were also drawn out, repetitive, and interchangeable, we probably only needed 2 or so chapters showing his struggles to get the necessary information across. It felt like a lot of padding, it was really slow and I did a lot of skimming. I am still very interested in the overarching plot and mystery behind the ghosts so that kept me reading but man this “will they won’t they kill him” plot did not justify it’s own whole book. Alas this is a persisting issue that will never be resolved while they continue to force 6 books into 1 series that doesn’t need 6 books. I’m sure the writers are doing the best they can with these unfortunate constraints but still, it’s a wonder this slow padding isn’t more of a detriment to their younger readers that the books are supposed to be marketed to.

hey do you ever love a fic so much you want to draw fanart for it? but you are not very good at drawing so you decide to try out collage for the first time in your life? well, let’s just say that i quite liked the last published chapter of  @gerrydelano‘s fic
[ID: the image is a collage. the background paper is pastel blue, and towards the top right corner there is a group of birds, drawn in white. they are eating and the lines of the drawing are smudged, so that the white drags out from them in vague shades. on the top left corner, there is a single window frame; the frame is green and the glass is black. there are a series of eyes taken from various paintings glued on top of the glass. from behind the frame, comes a single butterfly’s wing, which is red yellow and white. on the bottom right corner, there is a tiny, white drawing of a person helping another on a small boat. the drawing is framed into the corner by an arch. the colors of the arch are graded from dark green to dark red. a red and yellow leaf is glued on top of the arch, and there is a tiny piece of paper glued onto the leaf. the paper says: “-G”. right in the middle of the drawing, we first can see (looking at it from the bottom to the top) a picture of some kind of body of water, upon which two boats are sailing. upon that first picture, acting as shore for the water, there is a picture of outer space. it is red, green, violet and white, and it is a bit shiny. there is an old stairway glued right in the middle of outer space. at the bottom of a stairway we can see a yellow figure (maybe a kid, with long hair and a backpack) and the top of the stairs connects to a door. the door belongs to a blue room. there is a big clock glued upon the door, and there is a drawing of a man, looking tired and facing the other way, right in the middle of the room. the top and bottom right corners of the room are framed by two colored vortex, which are incidentally two of the stars from Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”. from behind the left side of the room, comes out another butterfly wing, which perfectly mirrors the one that comes out of the window. on the right side of the paper, we can see the sentence “I’d say you have at least somewhat of a chance” spelled out in different letters. at the bottom of the paper, a white piece of paper says “two ships passing”. /end ID]
under the cut I have written an explanation of the meaning behind the,, symbols? I am not going to pretend I had super strict idea to begin with, but as I started to find things I liked on random high-school books I (un)consciously  assigned them a meaning. feel free to indulge my pretentiousness and read my ramble I guess + (also under the cut) close-up pictures
okay so let me just run down a list: — the window okay, so. that’s meant to represent the background world, the things Gerry and Jon are going to have to live with whenever they step outside of their refuge. the glass is dark, because they try to protect themselves for as long as possible, but there are still various Eyes peeking in, mostly looking aggressive or extremely focused (fun fact: all of these come from paintings; i perhaps should have written down which belongs to what but i forgot) — the birds this is a reference to the ongoing “birds in jon’s stomach” metaphor. they are eating because that’s what they were drawn doing on the paper i miraculously found dsgfghk but if you want to push it you could say that they are all going “finally, some good fucking food” at Jon’s joy in meeting Gerry?? + they lines are smudged because,,,,,,, (god i am so sappy) because it gives an impression of movement? like, they are at ease but part of them is free to fly — the butterfly’s wings so, take “one dropped stone can change the way the whole ocean moves” but make it boring, and suddenly it’s the butterfly’s effect. the wings connect both to the outside world, to the window and the Eyes /and/ to the room (which I will get to later) because their meeting changes everything. it changes how they interact with the world and (at least partially) it saves them from it + it changes them as people, and gives them a space to be happy, to be with each other — the sea + outer space the sea with the two boats is quite an obvious one so i am not going to say anything about it. outer space is,,,,,,,,,, Miriam? I know she is more ocean vast that she is space vast, but I guess the contrast is nicer this way. she has been the shore to their sea, the vast, contextless freedom through which Jon and Gerry have connected, and Gerry has healed — the yellow figure in my head, that’s Gerry. i don’t know about the yellow, it came with that so i didn’t choose it and i don’t really have a meaning for it (unless you want to be really emo and decide that “Gerard just looks at him like he’s seeing the sun for the first time, and then looks away like he’s surprised by how much it hurts” is suddenly reversed in this last chapter, and Gerry is, in a way, Jon’s sudden source of light). the figure is that of a kid (I think, at least?) with a backpack. it’s Gerry as a kid, meeting Jon in that chance Miriam has made possible and relatively durable — the stairs those are a reference to the stairs in Portia’s house, but they also mark the passage of time (that’s sort of represented by the big clock on top of the door). by the time Gerry gets to the top, Miriam has left and suddenly he is in another room — the blue room + the man the blue room is where Jon is stuck now. he is facing the other way, he is adrift. the man doesn’t look like Jon but we’ll forgive that because in the original full drawing he is sitting onto a rock which is connected with some ropes to a boat. the blue room is framed by those vortexes (which are actually two starts from Van Gogh’s Starry Night) because i had made a mess with glue and i needed to cover up the corners sfgsdfg but if we want to think well and hard about this, perhaps they are the lights Jon still has but cannot, won’t see. he is not looking at either of them. wow now im sad — the door Gerry and Jon don’t meet in the universe, nor in the blue room. they meet beyond the door, in their sacred, private space. they both need to get in in order for this to work — the bottom right corner okay, in my head that’s sort of a page number. something that marks our position in the story. there’s this drawing of a man helping another on a boat (which comes from the same drawing I found the man in the blue room in!) cause, you know. it’s reunion time. the arch was originally part of a circle which was rainbow-coloured. it reminded me of that idea which I think is in the Official™ gtcmu™ lore- that thing about Jon having no specific colour, but colouring everyone else, sort of being the rainbow. it’s not obvious cause the arch isn’t a full rainbow, but I was indeed thinking about it. i guess i also wanted to somehow convey that it’s not just Gerry that is giving something to Jon. they are both sharing something meaningful with each other. Jon is still making him bright. then, there is the leaf, because this happens in Autumn, and the small “-G” which is a reference to the note Gerry leaves to Tim — “I’d say you have at least somewhat of a chance” the quote is obviously very cute and the moments in which both Gerry and Jon say it (though this is Gerry’s phrasing) are CUTE. but i chose this one because it’s superficially warm + as a standalone could mean something more. it’s simple and it’s complex. it’s “yeah im totally bi” “yeah i would indeed like to kiss you” and it’s “sometimes it feels like the entire world is against you and your life has been so so hard, but I’d say you have at least somewhat of a chance”. and this is their chance. so they take it
OKAY i made myself emotional thank you for get quite as far as you are reading this!

Her head is shaved, all except for a distinctive swath of tight curls on the top and left side of her head. She has the tiniest septum ring in her nose, and a tattoo of what looks like a musical note behind her right ear."

The Setting Sun
yall. Yall. i wrote a fic im so proud of myself. This is Possibly a series, if y’all want it !! otherwise standalone /peace sign/ also, if you like a certain pairing then mention it bcos idk which pairing yet, if any, so :3c
Summary: “He... Logan wasn’t angry, at the events. He just came to a realization, like dust, sitting heavy in his lungs. If he coughed his entire life would go black and gray, and he wouldn’t be able to stop.”
AKA Logan realizes he’s not the best person to be Thomas’s Logic. So he makes a new one.
Words: 3196
Genre: angst, some fluff. Logangst, of course
Warnings: implied character death for a moment (I promise, he does not die). deprecation, not showing all the sides in the most flattering light (like humans), disappearance.. if there’s anything else, please let me know!
writing tag: @sassy-in-glasses, @rose-gold-roman, @justanotherpurplebutterfly, @echomist13
Logan came to the realization like Roman might describe love: slowly, and then all at once.
He was increasingly perceptive of the other sides’ actions, though he wasn’t sure if this was a side effect of being Logic or if it were more... paying astute attention to their every move.
But he started noticing the little things, like when Virgil mentioned how certain long silences made him nervous and attentive to every single move.
And the word games of sarcasm that sometimes, used to, fly over his head.
But he’d gotten better.
And he’d gotten so much worse for it.
He noticed Roman’s roll of the eyes when Logan turned away, or sometimes in full view, turning to look at Thomas, get a load of this guy. He noticed the disdainful flick of his fingers, the push of his shoulders, the sneer on his lips that might disappear in moments time.
Of course he saw Patton’s strained smile, his frown at Logan’s exposition, just hold back a bit next time, bud, we don’t want any wounded feelings around here! The concerned jolt of his gaze, flipping between Virgil and Roman and Logan, uncertainty, forced delight, the simmer of it’ll all be okay, let’s just take a step back and talk about it! even though Logan knew “it” would always be feelings and not the actual issue at hand.
And Virgil’s candid nature hid such secrecy that Logan couldn’t miss the darkened expression, the gentle lean away, how Virgil would talk about how Logan disrespected him, or used to, and in the next heartbeat force Logan to shift for his means. The listen, dude, you might want to lay off a bit. Of course, Logan could do that, of course.
He couldn’t miss, then, Thomas wincing, the muscles in his face contracting into something (something) and he’d make eye contact with Roman or Virgil and they’d have that look. He couldn’t miss Thomas’s awkward stance, the way he’d shift when Logan stepped up to speak, the defense alighting in everyone’s eyes the moment Logan opened his mouth.
He... Logan wasn’t angry, at the events. He just came to a realization, like dust, sitting heavy in his lungs. If he coughed his entire life would go black and gray, and he wouldn’t be able to stop.
He couldn’t cough. He couldn’t mess up.
Logan massaged the center of his chest, staring into a shard of broken glass glittering rainbow in the light of the mindscape. Every side had one; they’re own personal escape into Thomas’s core, the centerpiece of his existence.
Too long spent in there, and they would dissolve into Thomas. And I wouldn’t want to lose you, Patton told Virgil. Please don’t go back.
Logan wouldn’t leave without a second thought. He couldn’t do that to them; Logic was a particularly important piece to discussion, and Logan knew that he... that Logic would be needed, for the pieces to fit together. For the code to run properly.
Viscous despair surged through his veins, slogging and clogging his throat and heart, and Logan knew he was no longer needed. Not as Logan. As a facet of Thomas’s personality, he’d failed, and grown too far from the center.
Logan exhaled, closing his eyes and ignoring the trails down his cheeks. Touching the cold surface, he slowly drew his fingers away, trails of electric blue and steel grey extracting from the glass. Logan pulled the essence of Logic from Thomas’s core, the very thought that had been used to make him – only, different, because Logan... Logan could not be a repeat, he could not be another stumble in the process of Thomas’s life.
He gathered synopsis, collected and connecting every (important) aspect of Logic into one humanoid figure. They were comprised of long strings like nerves, dark blue and gleaming.
One more thing. Logan took a moment, or two, to think. He couldn’t mess this part up; done incorrectly, Logan would cause the very problem he was seeking to repair.
One breath, two, and Logan tapped his index finger against his heart, wincing as he drew out a long strand of glowing silver, waving ribbon-like through the air. The world dulled a little at the edges, his connection to Thomas waning and dissolving like morning dew. He suddenly couldn’t remember what year Thomas graduated, or how long he’d studied to be an engineer.
(He remembered twenty Disney facts that Virgil and Roman had tag teamed in teaching him, he remembered Patton’s favorite tea and how much sugar he liked in his coffee, he remembered–)
Logan wove the silver through the blue, interlocking the two until he’d created a fully new being, complete with all of Logan’s capabilities and (Logan slid his fingers away from the silver) his connection to Thomas.
“You’re going to fix everything I’ve destroyed,” Logan said softly. He leaned forward, suddenly tired, rubbing at his temples. “I’m sorry for pinning you with the responsibility. But with luck, you’ll be just the right Logic for them.”
Logan cradled the blue strands shaped like a jaw, and pressed a single kiss to their forehead. “You’ll succeed where I’ve failed,” he said, as life and autonomy filled the shape of a human Logan had created. Skin stitched over blue wiring, eyes glowing the silver of Logan’s connection as they blinked open.
“You are Logic,” Logan said, exhausted and fading fast. “You know your purpose. There are others like you, but they do not know you yet.”
The new Logic stared at him, unblinking. They opened their mouth and said, “What are you?”
Logan smiled, brown eyes crinkling at the edges. “I’m nothing.”
“But you are here,” they said. “You cannot be nothing. Nothing does not exist.”
“Truly, I am,” Logan said. He reached out a hand, the skin and veins and bones disappearing, fading like a mirage. “You see? I am vanishing.”
They blinked once, then. “You are Logic.”
“No,” Logan said. He shook his head. “I was.”
His body finally got the cue, and Logan faded just like Roman had once explained love:
Slowly, and then all at once.
I was.
I am no longer.
Roman heard a whisper through the mindscape and looked up from his book, narrowing his eyes.
“Roman?” Patton asked, doing a jigsaw puzzle with Virgil. “What’s up?”
“I heard something,” Roman said.
Virgil snorted. “Like, a ghost? Are we haunted? Can we be haunted?” he sounded excited about the concept.
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Roman said. They made faces at each other, a common “you’re irritating” that they exchanged.
“Maybe I’m the ghost, and you’re just now noticing my ghostly attributes,” Virgil said, wiggling his fingers.
“If any of us were a ghost, it’d be Logan,” Roman said, laughing. “From how often he holes himself up in his room nowadays.” He winced, then, because yikes, he forgot to watch his mouth again. He waited for Patton’s chiding be nice to Logan, Roman, that he’d always gotten with Virgil, and frowned when it didn’t come.
Virgil snorted before refocusing on the puzzle, evidently done with the conversation. Patton made a small noise of victory, slotting a piece into place. Virgil’s face softened with a smile.
Roman turned back around, leaning against the couch, brows furrowed. Something was wrong with the mindscape, something off. But if Virgil wasn’t noting anything, then it had to be solely in Roman’s realm.
Because... well, Roman couldn’t explain it, really, just a couple feelings thrown together with erratic stitching into a mismatched blanket that barely worked. But if he had to hazard a guess, something had been created, and shifted, and something – he longed to know what – added, to him, to his job.
The last part made him a little indignant because honestly, wasn’t his job hard enough? Which side decided well, this is a little much for me, Roman can take it!
Probably... well, probably Logan, but it didn’t seem logical for Logan to dump something else on Roman, not when Logan knew how stressed Roman could get, not when Logan was uncomfortably familiar with Roman’s breakdowns.
“Hey Virgil,” Roman said, throwing an arm on the back of the couch and turning to look at the table.
Virgil sighed. “What, couldn’t stand silence for more than five minutes?”
“It was three minutes and forty five seconds and I cannot, in fact, stand upon silence so no, I cannot,” Roman said, the words tumbling from his mouth before he could think. “Nerd,” he tacked on at the end, lamely and without heat.
Patton stopped moving, his and Virgil’s gaze stopping on Roman’s face, expressions twisted with confusion.
Virgil laughed uncomfortably, shifting in his chair. “You might be spending a little too much time with Logan, man.”
“I think it’s a good thing!” Patton said. “Logan can be a tough nut to crack.”
Roman frowned, because he wasn’t really, although he... he hadn’t really tried, as of late, to focus on him.
“I’m... I’m gonna go to imagination,” Roman said.
“Alright, kiddo!” Patton said. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m just...” Roman searched for an excuse, half-standing, when an idea struck him. He trained his face into a cocky, pompous expression, drawing on Thomas’s ability as an actor, falling into his role easily. “I’m bored. Reading this novel has not been as stimulating as promised, and I need to fight something.”
Virgil rolled his eyes and Roman internally grinned. Ace in the hole. Patton laughed and said, “Go ahead, bud! We’re not holding you back!”
Roman stood fully, stretching and setting the book on the side table, careful not to bend any of the pages. His books were littered with dogears and highlights, but Logan’s were meticulously cared for, only the best of the best with perfect folds (favorite parts) and notes.
Roman sank out to the hallway they collectively called home, each of their rooms branching out. Patton’s, of course, was adorned with various positive imagery with the overarching pale blue theme. Virgil’s was pitch black, delicate engravings of purple, covered in Logan’s notes and Patton’s pictures and Roman’s odd stickynote varying from return my earbuds you heathen to a realistic drawing of a chicken.
He stood in front of Logan’s door, eyeing the straight white and blue lines. They really needed to paint over this, it didn’t encompass Logan at all. Roman had a few ideas... maybe he would tell Logan, while he was here.
Roman knocked. “Logan?” he called out, puffing his chest to make his voice sound bigger. “It’s time to emerge from hibernation!”
Nothing.
Roman blinked a few times. Was Logan not in his room? But then, where else would he be? “Logan? Look, I’m sorry I was going back and forth with you on the blue and pink colors, it was so much like the sleeping beauty dress that I couldn’t resist.”
A few more seconds, and Roman frowned. “Are you not in there? Hello?” He knocked a few more times, just to be sure. Maybe he had earbuds in, or something.
The door swung open, Roman’s fist poised, and everything tilted on its axis for three horrible seconds.
“Who...” Roman choked on his words, confusion-fear-bewilderment filling his veins. “Who are you?”
They didn’t move, eyes open and unblinking, a striking silver color. “I am not a who. I am a what. I am Logic.”
Something small and dark twinged in Roman’s chest and he shook his head. “No. No, you’re not. Where’s Logan?”
“At the present moment, I am uncertain.” A channel of silver lit up their cheekbones, like wires in a circuit board. “Logan did not tell me where he was going, only that he was.”
“Logan is Logic, you’re... you’re not Logic,” Roman said again, shivering. This was wrong, this was wrong. “Why are you here?”
“I am the manifestation of Thomas Foley Sanders’s Logic, intended to add reasoning to certain discussions.”
“No, Logan is,” Roman tried. They didn’t blink, which was really starting to unnerve him on a whole different level. “I don’t understand.”
They regarded him for a moment. “Very well. I will expound. Logan created me ten minutes and thirteen point three seconds ago. He used the mindscape to do so.”
Roman flinched. Logan created something. Logan created... he swallowed, throat thick.
They – Logic? – continued. “The former Logic said, ”You are Logic. You know your purpose. There are others like you, but they do not know you yet.“ When I inquired of his being, he stated, ”I am nothing.“ This is paradoxical situation, so I sought to remedy his flawed thinking. He said, ”You see? I am vanishing.“ His fingers disappeared into the air, of a way I am thus uncertain. I called him this ”Logic“, as you did, but he corrected my flawed verbiage and stated, ”No. I was.“ Soon after his statement, the rest of his body vanished. I have been standing in the room, collecting data for my success here. Evidently, the former Logic knew his job was being fulfilled incorrectly, and decided to find a solution. I was created as the solution.”
Roman couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. “What?”
“Would you like me to repeat?”
“No, no,” Roman stuttered, out. “No. No, Logan wouldn’t... how did he make you? How?”
“From the data I have obtained,” they said, still not blinking or moving, as if they were a picture on a background, “the former Logic gathered the essence of Logic into a singular being from the data of the mindscape. He inserted that being with a silver strand – of which I am uncertain of the reason – and gave the being life.”
“The silver,” Roman whispered, realization dawning in his eyes. “The silver is the connection to Thomas, you need it to be one of his sides, I’ve never heard of... transferring, or whatever he did...”
Roman fell quiet, the silence deafening to his ears. Logic hadn’t invited him into Logan’s room, though Roman wondered if Logic knew common societal practices, or if he was merely... a computer. A vessel.
A thought struck him and Roman’s spine shot ramrod straight. He stared at Logic intently, just barely stopping himself from grabbing their shoulders and shaking (just to get some movement, some life). “The golden string. What did he do with it?”
A few seconds passed as they processed this. “I am in no possession of a golden strand.”
“But where – where–” Roman stopped, took a breath, and reworded his sentence. “What did he look like before he disappeared? Did he glow, or were his eyes a different color? His veins?”
Roman counted one, two, three, four, five before Logic spoke. “The former Logic had skin much lighter than a healthy human being, being transparent and pale. His veins were not red or blue but a copper, gold color. His eyes were brown, but the irises had lines of gold within them, which steadily took over the entire iris.”
Roman lost his breath and almost fell, holding himself against the wall with one hand. “He’s... he...” Oh my god.
“Is the golden strand important to my functions?” Logic stated more than asked.
“Not... not your functions, but it’s... it’s his entire personality, his memories, his feelings,” Roman said, the words thick and heavy in his mouth.
“Very well,” they said, and asked no further questions, a silence that gave Roman a whiplash he never thought he’d feel. His curiosity, his wit...
And then it struck him.
“Oh, no, Logan,” Roman murmured, eyes wide and unblinking. Logan hadn’t left any untied odds and ends, had he? The “essence” of logic in a different being, and his extra jobs, the ones that required a personality, that required feeling, he pushed... pushed onto Roman. And, undoubtedly, part of Virgil, part of Patton... they all carried a little bit of Logan in them, now.
Roman had Logan’s scathing wit, his quick comebacks.
He didn’t want them.
“The gold,” Roman said. “When he vanished, did he have a mirror on him? A shard of glass?”
“I am uncertain.”
“And you don’t have any desire to learn? To figure it out? Wrack your brain?”
“I do not have desire,” they said so plainly that Roman wanted to cry.
“Okay, I need to... I need,” Roman gestured a bit with his hand, thoughts running a mile a minute. “Mirror mirror on the wall...” his mirror appeared in his hand moments later, gilded with gold and an intricate handle. Roman clutched it like a parched man to water. “Show me Logan.”
The mirror swirled, disney-esque to his name, before revealing a vague fog with a shimmer of gold. One moment there, gone the next, leaving just... gray.
But it was there.
Roman was certain of it.
“He’s still alive,” Roman murmured. The mirror, if it had not been made of impenetrable thought, would have cracked under the pressure of his hands. “He’s still alive.”
“The former Logic did not erase himself?” the other Logic asked.
“No, he’s still there, just his personality and thoughts and memories,” Roman said. “He didn’t erase himself. He moved himself into the mindscape. He did the sides version of moving far, far away.”
“He should have. He cannot take up space in the mindscape,” Logic said.
“His personality isn’t much space at all,” Roman said. “The mindscape is neigh endless. You know this.”
“You make a valid point. I concede,” Logic said. Roman frowned. Agreement so fast?
“But that means he’s still there,” Roman said. He’s alive. And that means we can find him.”
“Are you certain he wishes to be found?” Logic said.
“No,” Roman said. “But I... I can’t let him just leave. I can’t. The longer he spends in the mindscape, the more he disappears... almost like growing old. I need to... He shouldn’t have left. He’s logic, he’s our logic, and I... I miss him.”
“Very well.” No fighting whatsoever.
Roman took a shuddering breath. An actual mission, with real dangers. An adventure, the romantic side of his brain whispered. Save the damsel in distress. Only, Logan had chosen to disappear into the mindscape.
But Roman couldn’t do nothing. He’d... he’d have to, at least, find him, and talk to him. It wasn’t right for Logan to up and leave without telling the others.
Then it’s decided, then?
“Okay,” Roman said. “Okay. I’m certain.” He squared his shoulders, breathing slowly. “I’m going to get him.”
Logic said nothing, stare blank and emotionless.
Goosebumps rose on Roman’s skin. “But first...” he flicked the mirror, vanishing it into the mindscape. “First, I have to tell the others.”
Logic didn’t move as Roman sunk out. Roman wondered if he’d still be standing there, hours later.
He didn’t know why Logan had left. Why Logan had committed an act so much more thorough, so much more permanent, than Virgil ducking out.
I don’t know why you left.
Roman rose in the living room, drawing Virgil and Patton’s curious gazes.
But I know one thing.
Virgil shot to his feet, entire being buzzing with energy and fear-anxiety-nervousness.
You’re not alone. You’re never alone.
Patton stood slowly, a shaky sort of realization filling his face before Roman had even said a word.
Your family is behind you.
And we’re not leaving you behind.

Meet the writer tag!
Thanks to the sweet bby @reinkings and @trevorparece for tagging me in this <3 Sorry this took me so long to do! (and sorry for the people who also tagged me in this! I could only find 2 but I know there was a few more)
Rules: Answer 10 questions, write 10 questions, tag 10 people!
where do you typically get inspiration for your wips?
Hmm A lot of my inspo comes from music once I have a solid idea of my wip. But it usually starts off with tropes I like and a vague idea of characters and relationships.
do you prefer reading series or standalone books?
I think I prefer reading shorter series (aka duologies or trilogies) once you get over a quartet I get a bit hesitant unless i’m like 100 percent in love with the story.
who’s your favorite OC? what’s their favorite color?
My favourite OC so far has probably got to be Hepton. I love that complex scary man so much. His favourite colour is orange!
coffee or tea?
Now this is the question.... I think i’ve gotta say tea.
do you prefer to plot every detail, just jump in to a story, or do something in between?
Something in between! I find that I need to have a vague idea of where the story begins, ends and the whole point of the journey before I start writing. But I can’t have it in super detailed outlines because I just die.
pen or pencil?
Pencil! My handwriting is disgusting and I like to be able to erase my spelling errors.
what’s the funniest backstory you have for one of your characters?
I’m not sure any of them are funny... They’re all pretty tragic.
would you rather only ever be able to write haikus, or only ever be able to write paragraph-long sentences?
Oh fuck. Only write paragraph long sentences?
what’s your favorite thing to write about?
I’m a sucker for writing romance and smut don’t @ me
how would you describe your WIP(s) in one sentence?
Ignorant girl discovers all her friends are magical and she needs to stop being so fucking hypocritical tbh
Additionally questions by Trevor! Thank u boo!
1. Standalones, trilogies, or behemoths of a series?
  Trilogies!
2. What is your favorite line of your own writing?
I’m currently loving on my prologue again so any line from that!
3. What would your book’s epigraph be?
“Who ever said the world responds to kindness? Issues have always been solved with anger and outcry.”
4. How about its movie poster slogan?
I honestly have no idea r.i.p me

Rereading The Kingdom Keepers- Disney After Dark!
Hello everyone! So once again I’m making the attempt to reread Kingdom Keepers. I have tried this many times in the past, probably once a year honestly, and I’ve never gotten farther than Disney in Shadow. BUT, I am determined this time! The point here is, I’m taking reading notes I go of some little fun facts that I forgot previously, and some passages that are just amazing, that I thought I’d share with you all! So, here are my notes on Disney After Dark!
(Please note, some of these things are from my reread in 2015)
(Also this is gonna get long so there’s a read-more link)
Okay so first of all this is the book from the series that I’ve read the most, but somehow it’s the one I forget the most about
Like there’s just so much happening and without fail I always, always forget all the tiny details of the plot-especially at the end.
This is also the book that seems to present some of the biggest continuity errors that we see later in the series
Maybeck is the computer guy?
Does Finn’s little sister exist here? I don’t know?
Amanda and Jess look like identical twins? But....one of them is white and the other isn’t?
But I digress let’s move on
So the first thing, that you all probably know already, but I just picked up on for the first time in years is that the reason Wayne can’t see the characters and the keepers can is that the keepers are part character because of their DHI status, so they can see other characters
The whole world makes sense now I stg
THIS BOOK IS SO INCREDIBLY DATED AND IT CRACKS ME UP EVERY TIME
Like Hollywood Studios is still MGM
So theoretically, if they’re 14 now, in 2005, they should be like almost 30 now(2018)
However, it is definitely 2014 in book 7 when they’re supposed to be 18, because there are mentions of Frozen, which makes them about....22ish now, soooo you know what I’m just gonna go with it
Anyway back to the actual book
Amanda has freckles!
Also she’s wearing hip-huggers and a crop top I am concern RIDLEY SHE’S 14 PLEASE
While things like this exist that they are doing things that are a bit too mature for 14, there are also moments when they are adorably 13(that’s right they’re still technically 13 in this book)
Like when Finn hangs out with Amanda for the first time and makes notes in his head about what to tell Dillard about her
IT’S SO ADORABLE AND I LOVE IT
Oh when Finn goes to Charlene’s school he gets asked if he was on Zoom
Another thing that majorly dates this book
The introductions of the female characters are kinda...those kind of introductions
Ex: “Charlene was the kind of girl you might see on a cereal box.”
OK SO YOU KNOW HOW I SAID AND WE ALL KNOW THAT THE CONTINUITY ERRORS IN THIS SERIES ARE RAMPANT
WHAT’S CRAZY IS THERE ARE A LOT OF HINTS IN BOOK 1 ABOUT MUCH LATER EVENTS---also leading me to say that I don’t believe this book was actually meant to be a standalone
When Wayne is first telling them the story of the Stonecutter’s Quill, he says “I’ve been waiting a long time to tell you that story”, hinting that he knew it would be coming since he met them in 1955
Also, when Finn asks Maleficent if she is the leader of the Overtakers, she says “I am but a humble servant to she who lives within,”- a possible hint at Tia Dalma
Seriously guys  I am AMAZED
Back to plot details and stuff
WHEN PHILBY, FINN AND CHARLENE CROSS OVER THE FIRST TIME WAYNE BUYS THEM ICECREAM THAT’S SO ADORABLE WHAT THE HELL
Also when Wayne was explaining the Overtakers to them, and he said that they used a hurricane like a charging battery, Finn says its crazy and Philby says “no its not” and THAT’S MY BOI
Charlene didn’t want to do it at first. Willa was kinda reluctant but Charlene was completely against it
They were basically blackmailed into it which I forget every time
When he was 7 Finn walked across a restaurant to ask a smoker to put out their cigarette my precious
“Donnie” is not a nickname, but Maybeck’s stage name
Willa likes swimming!
Amanda is a vegetarian
Everything about chapter 12 is gold please go read it if you wanna have feelings about the beginning of the keepers
Wayne.Wears. Mickey.and. Minnie. Slippers
Finn has a kitty!
Also in that scene Amanda comes over Finn’s house for dinner(which I forgot) to be on VMK with them and then Willa and Philby’s characters appear in Finn’s VMK room at the same time so do with that what you like
I also always forget that Finn and Jez are flirting when they first meet and that’s just so incredibly weird to think about now FINN THAT IS YOUR FUTURE SISTER IN LAW
Willa and Philby work individually together a lot and I love it
Finn’s Dad is in this book a lot more than I thought he was and he kinda sucks just as much as he did in the Syndrome
And his name is Donald by the way
Also Willa and Finn’s friendship is SUPER present in this book
Like she holds his hand in the teepee when she gets scared of Maleficent my precious sibling friends
Charlene is good at Scrabble
“ ‘MEN’ Charlene said. ‘Leave that to you!’ Willa quipped.” IM DEAD
Their Halloween costumes are the cutest things I’ve ever seen and I’ll let you see that for yourself but sneak peek Maybeck was Nelson Mandela
“ ‘This can be dangerous Amanda. You need to know that before you volunteer’(Finn was speaking here) Amanda’s nostrils flared. She looked angry. ‘I can take care of myself,’ Willa and Charlene grinned.”
LOOK AT MY GIRLS BEING A GIRLS TEAM RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING
IM SO PROUD
So that’s all I got for Disney After Dark! Rereading this book was so much fun, and I gobbled it up i like 2 days, because these books have the power to suck me right in every single time. I’ll be back in a little while to recount my findings on Disney At Dawn. See you then Keepers!

Peter Watts’ intense THE FREEZE-FRAME REVOLUTION is the best novella of the year
Tumblr media
FILE 770 praises Peter Watts’ THE FREEZE-FRAME REVOLUTION.
It’s clear that the full story of this universe is something which Watts has had in development for at least a decade, because the worldbuilding in the novelettes “The Island” (which won a Hugo in 2010), “Giants” (2013), and “Hotshot” (2014) is solidly intertwined with that of THE FREEZE-FRAME REVOLUTION. And it is a wonderfully-rich, hard science fiction universe, filled with big concepts and unique imagery woven together in a plausible execution.
I was just as blown away by this fantastic story as I have been by all of his other works. THE FREEZE-FRAME REVOLUTION has earned a place at the top of my Hugo Novella nomination ballot next year – and I will be very surprised if I read anything this year to displace it from its Number 1 spot.
SPECULICTION likes the story.
In the end, THE FREEZE-FRAME REVOLUTION is a story that begins a bit ragged, but congeals into a tight climax that, Watts being Watts, addresses the inevitably of humans beating their heads against the very walls that make us human.  The contrast between Chimp (har har) and the human crew is real.  THE FREEZE-FRAME REVOLUTION A quick read, said wobbling at the outset does not last long, allowing the setup to swiftly reveal and resolve itself, making for satisfying reading.
Scott Schlueter enjoys the book.
Intense as a standalone, though part of a larger body. Hard Science fiction, exquisitely character driven, and very interesting / unique journey. Could not put it down until it was completed. Still need to digest the ending, so I am without doubt reading the rest of the Sunflower cycle to give it a new spin.

THE FREEZE-FRAME REVOLUTION engenders two separate REDDIT discussions.
Peter Watts' new novel(la) The Freeze-Frame Revolution is out:
[–]sblinn 6 points 13 days ago
Official publication date appears to be June 12 in the US, with the (already available) Kindle edition listing a June 19 publication date.
[–]sinebubble 4 points 13 days ago
I was able to download it last night and got about 25% in before going to bed. Weird.
[–]doctorbranius[🍰] 4 points 13 days ago
What's it about?
[–]X-51[S] 13 points 13 days ago
Humanity sends out an AI controlled ship with a human crew coming and going out of stasis to build stargates and then you can't really say much more without getting spoilery
[–]punninglinguist 5 points 13 days ago
Same setting as The Island?
[–]X-51[S] 5 points 12 days ago
Yes this is all in the Sunflowers setting
<snip>
[–]shamivr 4 points 13 days ago*
ATTENTION, SPOILER
Does anyone know what the deal is with the red letters? I've got the URL, but don't understand the gene map thing...
[–]sellanra 2 points 13 days ago
mind PMing me what you found? i noticed something was up but im not patient enough to piece them together right now...
[–]demiller 2 points 13 days ago
I'm in the same boat. Noticed, but haven't taken the time to piece it together. Far too absorbed in the story. I think this is my favorite Watts setting.

[SPOILERS] Discussion of 'The Freeze-Frame Revolution' by Peter Watts (and its hidden message):
[–]whywhisperwhy 5 points 6 days ago
Regarding the main work (I haven't had a chance to read Sundays eighth notes yet)-
I thought it was a well-written and enjoyable, and it's a good anchor for the series. I will also say that I wish it had been the first work I'd read in the setting. Mainly, it took a lot of the suspense out when you can guess very early on that the plot is about the 'spores rebellion, which is doomed to failure. Even the twist about the presence of the smart AI felt a bit anticlimactic to me, unfortunately. So it'd still be a highly-rated novella for me, but it didn't cover much new ground, as you said there were a few extra tidbits about the 'spores history and Society, as well as a glance at Eriophora.
In general there just wasn't a lot of new information about the setting, either, although it fleshed out Sunday a bit. Then again, Watts can be a pretty subtle author and maybe I'll need to reread it to really get anything...
[–]sinebubble 6 points 6 days ago
Bingo. The story fleshed out the world a bit, but given what we knew from the future stories, it seemed a bit anti-climatic. Probably best to have been trimmed a bit more and presented as a short story. Or bundled with the rest of the other stories in the series and sold as a book.
And like Siri, this Sunday character seems to just float around. Never really felt like I had a deep grasp on her.
The bit at the end about the additional AI... Paranoid speculation? It does seems like the original designers were waaaay too focused on keeping the mission going and never really wanted it to complete. I think the real plan was to keep the mission wiring the galaxy until heat death.
I'd like to see more situations like the Ahzmundin story where they actually interact with the beings outside the ship. Particularly anything coming through the wormholes.
