I’ve seen a few references on this site to “When Hob was a knight” and I just realized why I found them so confusing and why there might be some understandable historical misconception. Hob was almost certainly never a knight by our modern standards of what a Medieval warrior knight would be.

1) Yes, Hob was a soldier in the 1300-1400s. But he was a commoner throughout that time (as evidenced by him only being able to get into printing because it was such a new trade they couldn’t require one to enter it as a child like all other trades did). Being a commoner soldier was a very different experience than being some romantic notion of a knight in the Middle Ages. I will spare you all the lengthy description.

2) Yes, Hob gained “a knighthood” in the 1500s. However, he purchased his knighthood with a bribe a healthy gift of gold to the Crown, which would mean there’s no martial expectation of the role. He bought his way into a class standing, not into being a knight in shining armor.

As far as I can tell, there’s no evidence that Hob was ever a “knight” in the sense people usually imagine, being a nobleman of some rank who wears plate armor into battle like he’s serving a mythical King Arthur. In fact, due to class reasons, the times when Hob was fighting and the times when he was “Sir Robert Gadlen” probably don’t overlap at all.

I admit, I’m a little weird about this because to me it matters that Hob was a commoner soldier who bought his way into being a low-ranking nobleman as a product of painstakingly built, one-man generational wealth, that he is common as dirt and knows it, and that he never did anything so romantic as wear plate armor into a Medieval battlefield.

But that’s just me. There’s enough gray area in his past that I wouldn’t begrudge anyone interpreting one of the wars he “found” in the 1400s as being one where he operated as what a modern viewer would perceive to be a “knight” but I will say, much of what he says in the text historically contradicts the idea that Hob ever bore such an exalted rank while on a battlefield, ever.

Origins of the Pibo: Let’s take a trip along the Silk Road.

1. Introduction to the garment:

Pibo 披帛 refers to a very thin and long shawl worn by women in ancient East Asia approximately between the 5th to 13th centuries CE. Pibo is a modern name and its historical counterpart was pei 帔. But I’ll use pibo as to not confuse it with Ming dynasty’s xiapei 霞帔 and a much shorter shawl worn in ancient times also called pei.

Below is a ceramic representation of the popular pibo.

Although some internet sources claim that pibo in China can be traced as far back as the Qin (221-206 BCE) or Han (202 BCE–9 CE; 25–220 CE) dynasties, we don’t start seeing it be depicted as we know it today until the Northern and Southern dynasties period (420-589 CE). This has led to scholars placing pibo’s introduction to East Asia until after Buddhism was introduced in China. Despite the earliest art representations of the long scarf-like shawl coming from the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, the pibo reached its popularity apex in the Tang Dynasty (618–690 CE: 705–907 CE).

Academic consensus: Introduction via the Silk Road.

The definitive academic consensus is that pibo evolved from the dajin 搭巾 (a long and thin scarf) worn by Buddhist icons introduced to China via the Silk Road from West Asia.

披帛是通过丝绸之路传入中国的西亚文化, 与中国服饰发展的内因相结合而流行开来的一种"时世妆" 的形式. 沿丝绸之路所发现的披帛, 反映了丝绸贸易的活跃.

[Trans] Pibo (a long piece of cloth covering the back of the shoulders) was a popular female fashion period accessory introduced to China by West Asian cultures by way of the Silk Road and the development of Chinese costumes. The brocade scarves found along the Silk Road reflect the prosperity of the silk trade that flourished in China's past (Lu & Xu, 2015).

I want to add to the above theory my own speculation that, what the Chinese considered to be dajin, was most likely an ancient Indian garment called uttariya उत्तरीय.

2. Personal conjecture: Uttariya as a tentative origin to pibo.

In India, since Vedic times (1500-500 BCE), we see mentions in records describing women and men wearing a thin scarf-like garment called “uttariya”. It is a precursor of the now famous sari. Although the most famous depiction of uttariya is when it is wrapped around the left arm in a loop, we do have other representations where it is draped over the shoulders and cubital area (reverse of the elbow).

Buddhism takes many elements from Hindu mythology, including apsaras अप्सरा (water nymphs) and gandharvas गन्धर्व (celestial musicians). The former was translated as feitian 飞天 in China. Hindu deities were depicted wearing clothes similar to what Indian people wore, among which we find uttariya, often portrayed in carvings and sculptures of flying and dancing apsaras or gods to show dynamic movement. Nevertheless, uttariya long predated Buddhism and Hinduism.

Below are carved representation of Indian apsaras and gandharvas. Notice how the uttariya are used.

Below are some of the earliest representations of flying apsaras found in the Mogao Caves, Gansu Province, China. An important pilgrimage site along the Silk Road where East and West met.

I theorize that it is likely that the pibo was introduced to China via Buddhism and Buddhist iconography that depicted apsaras (feitian) and other deites wearing uttariya and translated it to dajin.

3. Trickle down fashion: Buddhism’s journey to the East.

However, since Buddhism and its Indian-based fashion spread to West Asia first, to Sassanian Persians and Sogdians, it is likely that, by the time it reached the Han Chinese in the first century CE, it came with Persian and Sogdian influence. Persians’ fashion during the Sassanian Empire (224–651 CE) was influenced by Greeks (hellenization) who also had a a thin long scarf-like garment called an epliblema ἐπίβλημα, often depicted in amphora (vases) of Greek theater scenes and sculptures of deities.

The earliest depictions of Buddha in China, were very similar to West Asian depictions. Ever wonder why Buddha wears a long draped robe similar to a Greek himation (Romans called it toga)?

Take a look below at how much the Greeks influenced the Kushans in their art and fashion. The top left image is one of the earliest depictions of Buddha in China. Note the similarities between it and the Gandhara Buddha on the right.

Before Buddhism spread outside of Northern India (birthplace), Indians never portrayed Buddha in human form.

Early Buddhist art is aniconic, meaning the Buddha is not represented in human form. Instead, Buddha is represented using symbols, such as the Bodhi tree (where he attained enlightenment), a wheel (symbolic of Dharma or the Wheel of Law), and a parasol (symbolic of the Buddha’s royal background), just to name a few. […] One of the earliest images [of Buddha in China] is a carving of a seated Buddha wearing a Gandharan-style robe discovered in a tomb dated to the late 2nd century C.E. (Eastern Han) in Sichuan province. Ancient Gandhara (located in present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northwest India) was a major center for the production of Buddhist sculpture under Kushan patronage. The Kushans occupied portions of present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North India from the 1st through the 3rd centuries and were the first to depict the Buddha in human form. Gandharan sculpture combined local Greco-Roman styles with Indian and steppe influences (Chaffin, 2022).

In the Mogao Caves, which contain some of the earliest Buddhist mural paintings in China, we see how initial Chinese Buddhist art depicted Indian fashion as opposed to the later hanfu-inspired garments.

Spread of Buddhism to East Asia.

Wealthy Buddhist female patrons emulated the fantasy fashion worn by apsaras, specifically, the uttariya/dajin and adopted it as an everyday component of their fashion.

Therefore, the theory I propose of how the pibo entered East Asia is:

India —> Greek influenced West Asia (Sassanian Persians, Sogdians, Kushans, etc…) —> Han China —> Rest of East Asia (Three Kingdoms Korea, Asuka Japan, etc…)

Thus, the most likely theory, in my person opinion, is Buddhist iconography depicting uttariya encountered Greek-influenced West Asian Persian, Sogdian, and Kushan shawls, which combined arrived to China but wouldn’t become commonplace there until the explosion in popularity of Buddhism from the periods of Northern and Southern Dynasties to Song.

Deeds Not Less Valiant - Chapter Thirteen

Summary: Din and Grogu arrive at the aftermath of the disaster.

Din saw the blast plume a few seconds before the sound reached the cabin. “That doesn’t look good,” he said, dashing inside to grab his jet pack. He strapped it on and scooped Grogu up. Soon they were in the air.

”Greef’s going to need help,” Din said.

“Ya,” Grogu said. His ears fluttered in the wind as they streaked toward town. He pointed with one hand. “Boom.”

”Yeah, a big boom,” Din said, scanning the area with all his sensors. “Doesn’t look like the town’s under attack, so hopefully it’s just an accident.”

As they got closer, he could see what section of town was affected and his heart sank. That’s Tala’s neighborhood. Grogu realized it, too; his ears drooped and he started to whimper.

Din landed several yards from the edge of the debris. People were shouting and droids were already swarming over the rubble. “Stay back!” Greef was there, his arms wide. “Let the droids search. It’s not safe.”

Greef turned to Din. “Mando! Good to see you. Looks like just an explosion.”

”That’s Tala’s building,” Din said, starting forward.

Greef laid a hand on his arm. “Most people were still at work,” he said. “I don’t think there were many inside.”

”Nee!” Grogu cried, wriggling from Din’s grasp and running toward the mess. “Ta! Nee!”

”Get back here!” Greef yelled, but Grogu was fast. He darted past the bystanders and disappeared into the rubble.

”The tooka,” Din said, pushing Greef aside. “He’s going after the tooka.”

Droids were carefully lifting and sorting debris as they scanned for life signs. Din ignored them all and focused on Grogu, who was crawling with unusual speed toward a section where a wall had recently collapsed, dust still swirling in the air.

”It is not safe,” proclaimed a small droid as Grogu went past it. “The area is still unstable.” It turned to Din as he came near. “Sir, we have everything under control.”

”I’m sure you think so,” Din said, “but the kid knows what he’s doing.”

Grogu dove into a hole between two slabs of concrete. Din paused, wondering if he should try to lift one of the slabs or wait until Grogu came out. Suddenly, the upper slab began to move on its own, lifting shakily into the air. As it rose, he could see Grogu, his eyes squinted in concentration, his tiny hand directing the movement of the concrete. And behind him … Tala!

Din dove in, sliding into the narrow gap Grogu had created and grabbed her arm. He pulled her out, scrabbling backwards to get clear of the hovering slab. “I’ve got her,” he shouted.

Grogu lowered his arm and the concrete slab settled back with a groan. In a flash, he had wriggled his way back out of the original hole, covered in pale gray powder.

”Ta!” He patted her leg, then turned back toward the rubble.

”Neeli,” Tala gasped. “She’s in there. She’s alive. Grogu … he told me.”

”It’s okay,” Din told her. “We’ll get her out.” Every fiber in his body screamed for him to snatch her and Grogu and get them to safety, but they couldn’t abandon the tooka.

“Nee!” Grogu shouted. He flew into the air, aided by the Force, and flipped and jumped from one bit of rubble to another. Then he was lifting chunks with a flick of his hand, tossing them aside with ease. When a large enough hole had developed, he dove in and emerged a few moments later with a bedraggled but alive Neeli in his arms.

”Get him out of there!” Din yelled at the nearest droid, a nimble mechanic model that skittered ahead, grabbed Grogu and Neeli, and hurried back.

”Get them all out!,” shouted Greef. “Dank farrik, Mando! I told you to stay back.”

IG-11 strode into the mess and gently picked up Tala. “Please follow me, sir,” the droid said. “The High Magistrate requests we leave the area immediately.”

Din staggered to his feet and followed the former assassin droid. Tala twisted around in IG-11’s grip, calling out for Neeli. She wasn’t bleeding much, and all her limbs seemed to be properly attached and pointing in the right directions, but Din was still vibrating with fear.

He glanced around. The mechanic droid had Grogu and Neeli safely out of the danger zone and IG-11 had Tala. He could retreat with dignity. As he stumbled over the chunks of concrete, he realized he’d twisted his knee. Pain lanced through his leg with every step, but it was able to bear his weight, so he ignored it. Even so, he was limping as he approached Greef.

”The droids said there aren’t any more life forms inside,” Greef said. “They found one body …” He shook his head. “I’ll have the Typhe twins’ hides for this!” Greef was normally affable, but at the moment his face was grim. “Find them for me, Mando.”

Din shook his head. “No, I need to see if Tala and her tooka are alright,” he said. “Let Marshall IG-11 do it.”

Greef was stern. “I want you to do it, Mando. If they survived that blast they ran. You’re the best bounty hunter I’ve ever known. Bring them back for justice.”

”Just let me check on Tala and Neeli … and Grogu,” Din said. “And get some bacta for my knee.” Greef looked ready to argue. “An hour,” Din said. “I’m just asking for an hour.”

”All right,” Greef conceded. “One hour. Then I want you on the job. I’ll have IG start making inquiries now that the immediate danger is over. The other droids can handle cleaning up the mess.”

Din limped toward the wall across the street where the injured and their rescuers were huddled.

Tala was propped against a wall, Grogu and Neeli both in her lap, as a med droid scanned them all. “Superficial injuries on the child, moderate on the human, the tooka requires intervention,” it said.

”Intervention?” Tala managed to say. Her voice was shaky.

”Minor surgery,” the med droid said. “Lacerations and one broken bone. Also dust inhalation. Needs breathing treatment.” It swiveled away, already focused on the next patient.

A Twi’lek nurse kneeled down in front of them. “Don’t worry,” she said calmly. “Your tooka will be fine. I’ll take care of it.”

”Her,” Tala said. “Her name is Neeli.”

”I’m La’bana,” the woman said. “And once I get Neeli taken care of, I’ll clean you up.”

”Na!” Grogu said, holding up one hand. :I fix Neeli.:

:It’s okay, the nurse can do it. It’s not life threatening:

Grogu’s eyes narrowed. :I do it better:

:I’m sure you do, but what if we need your Force powers for something else? What if your Dad needs help?:

Grogu’s ears drooped a bit, but he relinquished his hold on Neeli and let La’bana take her. “Good choice,” Tala whispered to him. “Always let the professionals do their job.”

:Neeli be okay?:

“Neeli will be fine,” Tala said, willing her words to be true.

Din appeared in front of them, carefully squatting down. His knee was clearly injured. “Greef wants me to go after the Typhe twins,” he said, his voice tight. “I told him I needed to check on you first.”

Tala nodded. She wanted nothing more than to wrap her arms around him and reassure herself that they were both alive, but duty called. “I’ll watch Grogu for you,” she said.

:I go with Dad!: Grogu wriggled out of her lap, his ears vibrating with indignation.

”He can come with me if he wants,” Din said distractedly . He reached out to cup her face in his gloved hand. “Are you okay?”

”I’m fine,” she assured him. “The med droid said it’s only moderate injuries. A nurse took Neeli and I’m sure she’ll be back to take care of me when she’s done with her.”

She leaned into his hand nonetheless.

He nodded. “I need some bacta for this knee.” He hissed as he shifted his weight. “Watch Grogu while I swing by the med station. Then he and I will go after the twins. I’ll have Greef transport you and Neeli to my cabin when you’ve both been treated. It’ll be quieter there than the evacuation center. You can rest and recover.”

”Thank you,” she said. Tears were welling in her eyes, but she fought them back. She didn’t want him to think she was in pain. “I appreciate that. Neeli doesn’t like strangers.”

Din nodded. “And I’ll feel better, knowing exactly where you are,” he said. He levered himself up with a grunt. “Be right back.”

Midnight Snack (Moon x Reader Drabble)

Don't know the proper term for this, but the quick summary is Moon eating you out in your sleep. Contains a lot of edging and overstimulation. Spicy spicy.

Less than 1500 words.

Sound asleep. Unaware and completely vulnerable. Utterly defenseless against his advances. Just how he liked it. 

All that mattered now was your state of dress. Whatever he found waiting for him beneath the covers dictated his course of action. As per your agreement. 

Carefully, he lifts the edge of the blanket. Slowly, he ducks beneath it.

Here’s the finished version!

His name is Geode and he’s 1500 years old…old enough to have gray fur. His fur is much longer than the average warden’s and he spends hours grooming it every day. He mostly eats goats and sheep that slip and fall into the icy ravine he lives in. He keeps a small patch of sweet berries growing near the lava lake that borders his deep dark home. There’s never really enough food for him, so he’s a little thin under all that fur. His bones and joints tend to hurt when it gets really cold, especially right before a big blizzard. To help with his aches, Geode will sleep by the lava lake or soak in the water that flows next to the lava, since it’s nice and hot and mineral rich.

Geode walks with a wooden cane because he had a bad injury to his right leg. A miner hit him with a powerful trident and his leg was never quite the same. He has trouble pursuing trespassers, but his sonic boom attack is very powerful, making up for it. He has also learned to follow scents very, very well.

There is no ancient city in the deep dark Geode lives in. It’s actually a pretty small area far away from most human settlements. There is a tundra village on the north side of his mountain and a pillagers outpost on the south side. The illagers and villagers feared and revered Geode, giving him most things he wanted. Because some illagers/villagers are visually impaired, they do have books written in their version of braille, which Geode learned to read. If a book has regular writing that is raised or engraved enough to feel, he can kind of read that, too. Geode is a very intelligent warden and he enjoys reading. Over the past millenium, he’s gathered a wealth of knowledge that most wardens don’t have.

There are narrow spaghetti caves leading away from the cavern under that mountain that Geode lives in, but he rarely ventures into these because they are narrow and have unstable gravel. If he had to, though, he could travel through these tunnels to reach other deep darks and visit other wardens.

On one cool autumn morning, on my drive to work, I caught a scene in a half a second that just made a huge impact. It was beautiful and inspired this piece with the morning sun rays coming through the changing leaves on the trees over a yellowing field that had a stream to divide the area. I actually challenged myself with this piece and started working in black, white and grays to help use contrast rather than relying on color like i feel like I tend to do.
