ive been thinking about hard of hearing steve, who started losing his hearing after starcourt, the scoops troops are the first to find out because of how attached they are, robin erica and dustin all insist on steve learning to sign but he's insecure about learning a new language so they slowly learn and start teaching him

after vecna, eddie gets adopted to their little group and starts picking up on the signs and learning on his own, still struggles to hold a conversation, esp with the likes of robin or dustin, but he atleast knows simple words and phrases enough to communicate, eddie also gets into the habit of signing ILY to steve before he leaves, except steve rarely studies asl on his own most of what he remembers is from robin/erica/dustin, who never thought to teach him that specific sign, so steve just thinks eddie is just being a metalhead throwing up a 'rock on' gesture, hes still absolutely endeared by eddie doing this but he doesn't realize that eddie saying he loves him everyday, what follows is a ridiculous amount of pining where only steve doesn't know because everyone else know what that sign means, he only finds out because after gossiping with robin(who has tried to tell steve that its reciprocated) about eddie, erica interupts their convo by telling steve that eddie tells him he loves steve everyday (that clown is so obviously in love with you, how are you still pining? you're supposed to be a expert, steve?)

actually one thing that has been very elucidating while reading academic scholarship on anti-vaxx movements post-Covid is that a lot of seemingly “apolitical” or non-fascist participation in anti-vaxx and vaccine skeptical protests/demonstrations/social media activity is the result of decades of neoliberal governance - everyone is a ‘critical consumer citizen,’ a subjectivity that produces a public who is deeply invested in ‘shopping for alternatives’ and ‘getting the best deal,’ meaning that mass vaccination programs and mandates, even when universal and socialised, are viewed with suspicion by the public. These people are then primed to listen to the fascists who lurk among these movements, even if they’re a minority. I think one of the larger, more devastating takeaways of the pandemic is that our current situation in North America - low vaccination rates, high infection rates, lots of Covid variants - is the direct result of decades-long neoliberal projects to gut public infrastructure and turn everything into a privatised consumer product. Public goods like universal vaccination programs are therefore seen not as such but as authoritarian, anti-competitive disruptions of a free and open marketplace. To call it a PR disaster would be massively underselling it, but the public appears to have disappeared, replaced instead with an infinite mass of individuals in a market who all have to come to their own decisions about every aspect of their life, even at the cost of everyone around them. what a miserable place we’re in

Community Fridges-

A community fridge is a fridge located in a public space (on private land). Sometimes called freedges, they are a type of mutual aid project that enables food to be shared within a community. They require a small group of volunteers to run and require a fair bit of organizing but otherwise run fairly passively as a mutual aid project!

History-

2015- Starting up as a response to food insecurity in Germany by a group called "Foodsharing" and quickly started popping up places like Spain, New Zealand, India, Israel, the Netherlands, and Canada particularly as Covid picked up. 

2020- As Covid hit the world there was a sudden boom across countries, particularly the states, where they where very suddenly established. 

In New York City, community fridges, nicknamed “Friendly Fridges,” were introduced. The first one placed by an activist group, In Our Hearts. In Our Hearts has now set up at least 14 of the 70 fridges around New York City.

In Cincinnati Travis Mcelroy working with the vollunteers to fill Community pantries and Fridges with Covid Tests and Hygiene supplies like menstruation products, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.. across the city. Highlighting their location and use ages when they where needed most.

In Thailand, entrepreneur Supakit Kulchartvijit's Pantry of Sharing pantry cabinets, a variation on the community fridges, was launched in Bangkok and Rayong

Now most cities have at least one established fridge somewhere hidden in an alley if nothing else. In addition to an uptick in Food Pantries.

What can I do?

You can either find an already established one through a bunch of sites such as freedge.org or changex.or or your can start a fridge, this will take research into your particular area but here are some guides based on country at least

The Breakroom Free Box

Context: I (Mod J) work in a warehouse for my day job. Employees aren’t allowed to leave the premises during work hours, but there is a good-sized breakroom with fridges, assorted tables, a coffee machine, and general breakroom stuff.

How it happened: I’d love to claim I had the intention of starting something like this from the beginning, but I didn’t. I had a friend who also worked at the same warehouse, and when she got a different job, she gave me her old uniform shirts. That left me with way more work shirts than I had space for. I folded up the extra shirts, put them in a box with “free” written on it, and put it on the table next to the time clock.

By the time I clocked out the next day, most of the shirts were gone, but someone had added a boxed cake mix and two cans of soup. And I realized something I probably should have thought of sooner: A box in the break room had more possibilities than just getting rid of my extra work shirts.

The box: I replaced the shirt box with a bigger box and a more visible sign.

Food has so far been the fastest to disappear out of the box, but mugs and clothing have also been popular. Even though due to varying break schedules, it’s mostly anonymous, it’s been a great project to share things among coworkers - and all it takes to start oneis a box and a marker.
