Awhile back I did my own redesign of the Toa Mata from Bionicle. Mostly just trying to find a way to draw them without having to keep the toys permanently on hand for reference and a bit more streamlined to make them easier to draw in general. As far as universal details go, I gave them a segmented body template to lean into the biomechanical aspect of them, I also tried to find a consistent way to draw some of the more common limbs they had. I also tried to play with the gears on the back by giving each of them something unique and tried to give them unique kneeguards. I also tried to incorporate the orbs they had their chest by incorporating their elements matoran symbols into them
Tahu - Tahu served as kind of the template for the others, so he's probably the most standard out of them. I wanted to stick primarily with his original colors so made the bright red and orange the most prominent colors on him, but I also used the dark red he sported later as an accent color for more color blocking. His sword is based more on the Bionicle Heroes interpretation of it, though I may change that if I ever redraw this design. His left arm was never really stated to be anything, so I tried to purpose it as a sort of Aegis; it still matches his more aggressive personality, but also gives it a more utility. I also modeled his back gear after exhaust pipes to relate towards his element. Though it probably won't be seen that much, I did try to define his head too, making it kinda broad; specifically basing the heads off a combination of the originals, the glatorian heads from the end of the original line, and the heads from the reboot.
Kopaka - Since Toa of Ice tend to stick around cold places, I incorporated a bit of a coat into his armor for insulation. His sword also draws some inspiration from the Heroes version, but it also still works like his toy. His left arm was a bit awkward so I limited the armor to mostly just his bicep, I also tried to make the shield look like a snowflake on top of the radar dish look it obviously was piece wise. Kopaka was also one of the few toa consistently depicted is hauling around the McGuffins for whatever saga they're directly involved in, so I gave him a satchel to call back to that. His back gear is directly modeled after a snowflake like his shield, but a bit more obviously. I also tried to make his kneeguards resemble icicles. I tried to give his head a sharper look to call back to his cold and distant personality.
Lewa - Tried to make Lewa look a bit more lanky compared to the others since he's supposed to be the resident tree swinger. His axe leans more towards the original, but I still tried to incorporate aspects of the heroes version for fun. I tried to make his left arm a big grabby arm since most people turn it into a gun or something, but BlazeTBW thought it looked like a machete so I incorporated a fold-our arm blade to help him cut up vines and foliage as he swings around. His kneeguards are supposed to look like palm leaves but I'm not satisfied with how they turned out. I also gave him a few pouches since I figured he's want to keep a few snacks on hand or maybe even swipe a souvenir here and there.
Onua - Tried to make Onua look pretty broad since he's supposed to be strong even without his mask buffing him. Unfortunately his monochromatic color scheme can make things hard to color block, so I threw in some purple from his G2 version in order to help highlight some parts of his body. obviously made his claws his actual hands. I also did something a bit different with his legs sinw his original toy had them flipped around to bulk them, so I tried leaning into that while also making it look like a heavy duty hinge. I also tried to make his head particularly broad too.
Pohatu - Pohatu was pretty different from the original toa in that his torso was flipped around to make him more bottom heavy, so I tried to call back to that with his body shape. I also took inspiration from the toys arms to make them bigger than the others. I did include the two orbs on his shoulders, but recolored them to make them different from the chest one and included the extra pins on the leg. Since Toa of Stone live in the dessert I gave him a scarf to wrap around his head for sandstorms and gave him a decently sized backpack since he's also been happy to regale his own adventures (so it works for holding souvenirs). His kneeguards are based on boulders. I also inlcluded the orange his Phnatoka version sported to highlight parts of his armor
Gali - Obviously Gali's body is mostly just a female version of the standard one I came up with. I did call back to the pins her original toy had in her hips and I incorporated the mata hand into the chest orb I try to include on all of them. Her hooks are intended to slip onto her hands more-so than replace them. Her back-gear and kneeguards are also based on a bunch of bubbles. finally I incorporated her Mistaka colors as a highlight to add more color blocking.

Unscoped Akakus have a rather undeserved reputation of being worn by peeping toms and overall nosy people.
Obviously, Toa generally have more important things to do, as do Turaga, meanwhile Matoran cannot actually make use of the Akaku's power, but because of a combination of the nature of the mask, a few select incidents, and a few scandals based on fake "Matoran figured out how to activate the power of their mask!!!! Heres how!" news, the reputation ended up becoming so ingrained and cultivated that nobody manufactures unscoped Akakus anymore.
That's why even Matoran who have precisely zero use for scopes end up always getting a scoped Akaku.

Being the adopted daughter of Kurapika, I was almost never let outside. There was always school and being a hunter (Mamapika had no idea about this), that whenever coronavirus hit, Kurapika was unstable with the fact that I could die. So he banned me from leaving the house and forced me to do online school like a normal kid.
But that didn’t stop me from sneaking out with Gon and Killua, two kids who were my age, while Mamapika was doing his revenge work.
But, it just so happens that today, Leorio had came over to watch me and dragged Killua and Gon along.
And they were going on with the usual, “Gon you made me worried!” and, “But Killua, you can’t just kill someone because you don’t like them.”
I was leaning back on my chair while staring absent mindlessly at the screen. I could barely hear the teacher over the ruckus that they were making, and I forgot that this was the class that the teacher always forced us to turn our mic on.
I tried to remain obscure about it. Maybe she wouldn’t notice that it was turned off?
“Y/n. Y/n! Y/N!”
I look up in surprise at the computer staring wide eyed at the screen.
“Y/n, turn on the mic.” I shake my head and glance over at Killua and Gon. They are still in a deep fight that has now broke into them singing a random song off the internet. “Turn on the mic!” My teacher demands.
I lower my eyes a little and press the microphone icon. I can vaguely here the echo of Killua and Gon singing. (it's corn kid tiktok song (extended) (Lyrics)YouTube · Aqua Lyrics1 day ago)
“It’s corn!” Killua yelled. “A big lump with knobs!” Gon answered. They continued going back and forth.
“It has the juice.”
“It has the juice!”
“I can’t imagine a more beau-“
Leorio cuts off the background music. “Shut up! I’m coochie man.” he yells.
A big war is going on in the Zoom chat as people continue to sing the rest of the lyrics while others spammed question marks and laughing emojis.
“Uhm, Y/n-“ the teacher begins, but is cut off by another yell.
“No! We were singing!” Killua yells.
“Whoa, whoa!! Killua calm down!”
I turn around and glare at Killua. “Dude, I told you! You kill someone else and your money jar will overflow!”
A chocolate robot hits me square in the forehead. The teacher attempts to interrupt again, but I had already stood up, hearing ooohs erupting from my computer speaker.
Gon runs up to me, “Wait wait calm down! I haven’t seen you this angry since Tonpa tried to poison you at the hunter exams!” Everyone on the computer whispers, “Omg they’re a hunter :0” while others giggle, “Haha it’s a green bean.”
Killua uses his Godspeed to get a chicken and return back, and by the time he was back, the chicken’s still beating heart was already ripped out and handed to Leorio.
“Cook chicken now,” he says in caveman, giving Leorio a stanky eye.
“Chile, anyways.”
Mamapika then shows up at the door and rings the doorbell very aggressively with the sound of it being the “Kurapika is now drowning”.
Leorio opens the door and shoved the chicken into Kurapika’s mouth. He spits it out and yells, “I’m the original Sasuke!” and runs to his room.
“GooOoOooOoNn-“ Hisoka moans from the door.
Illumi appears in the corner. “Killua, come home.”
“Yeah, ok bye.” The teacher kicks me from the zoom.

So we all know that one chapter in Tales of the Masks, the first chapter that screamed Kotahu energy
How come Kopaka didn't think to use his Kanoi Akaku Nuva to find Pohatu?
This has been on my mind for a while and I'm genuinely curious, like yeah I get panic and all but come on Kopaka

Random Bionicle Headcanon
The Kanohi masks that the Toa Mata wear always seemed a bit eclectic to me. Most of them seemed to be rather weird and seemingly incredibly situational, which gets even weirder when you consider that the Toa Mata were designed as the spec ops team
And now, suddenly, in the throes of post Factorio sleepiness, I wonder. What if the masks were originally picked by the Toa Mata not out of any practical concerns, but entirely due to their personality quirks?
Let's take a look at some potential rationales for those choices, purely from my view.
Toa Tahu, the Hau, the mask of protection. On one hand, it is the mask in Bionicle lore, the symbol of Mata Nui himself. Perhaps Toa Tahu was particularly religious back before the amnesia, and chose the mask as a sort of icon?
Alternatively, he was always a bit afraid of getting hurt, and by the time he got over that fear, the mask already became part of his fighting style.
Toa Kopaka, the Akaku, the mask of X-Ray vision. Part of me wants to say that he picked it entirely in order to always know whether there was someone in another room so that he may be able to avoid unnecessary social interactions. Another part of me wonders if he may have been interested in machinery, which would explain why his mask of choice also came with several additional lenses for better zoom. He must have been annoyed when he lost some of them after going Nuva.
Toa Gali, the Kaukau, the mask of water breathing. The potential reason for that one is rather obvious. Gali simply always loved to swim, and so picked out an incredibly situational mask just to be able to do that more and better.
Toa Pohatu, the Kakama, the mask of speed. I'd assume that the reason for that one is equally as simple. He just likes to go fast, but sucks at piloting.
Toa Onua, the Pakari, the mask of strength. That one is equally as straightforward, but from the opposite direction. He got trapped in one too many cave ins and so chose a mask that would let h get out 9f them easily.
Toa Lewa, the Miru, the mask of levitation. My first thought was that he mostly picked it out as a joke to be able to literally float away during conversations, but then discovered that it actually works.
Any other thoughts? It's always possible that the masks have also just been assigned to them, but honestly, the idea that they picked them themselves, not for combat utility but due to their personal interests, seems rather intriguing to me.

To love is to hurt.
To love is to hurt.
He opened his eyes to the feeling of his heartlight spasming like an air bladder squeezed too quickly.
It hurt. It hurt. It hurt.
He looked down.
It was all coiling around his spine.
It was all bursting from him like ribbons, writhing and wiggling and settling against his frame, snaking under his armor pieces, latching onto them - if he tried to rip them off they would have clung harder, they would have torn and sent horrendous pains through circuits until he had to stop hurting himself, leaving them to grow further, twitching incessantly all the way across him as they took over, as they held tight, as they grew further and further and further until they began turning into a barely shaped mass of incessantly moving grossly wet disgusting serpentine worms of flesh and blood that pushed off the very shell he was made off and engulfed his skeleton until it was no more, swallowed away, devoured by the mass, buried now beneath pulsing wires aching with electricity, beneath a living blanket pressing much too tight around him, much too tight, like a trap sewing itself onto him, unable to pierce through the protodermis and instead being pierced in turn, sputtering blood out of him, boiling hot, burning, begging him to shed his carapace, the last thing he had, the last thing it could not take from him, the disgusting parassite no larger than his closed fist beating hard and painful against the metal as though to crack it, dent it, tear it off somehow, contorting his fingers with its warm ichor and humid flesh and blindingly desperate pain to make him reach out and tear himself apart, tear himself undone, rip his every little minuscule shred of identity off of himself to replace it with some new unknown appalling horror closing around his throat, replacing pistons and cogs and joints with pulsing boiling shaking alienly inside inside him trying to cling harder turn him move him against his will until he was nothing of himself ever again, and his mask dug deeply excruciatingly horrifyingly into his face, and his mask would not turn off, and he could not take his mask off, and he could not stop looking, and none of it could stop growing and writhing and turning and curling and moving and twisting and tightening and pulsing and twitching and jolting and tensing and
And he opened his eyes to the dark, to arms pulling him to sit up. A palm grabbed his nape and placed his face against a cheek.
The breath against his ear was warm, harsh, loud.
It hissed as it was exhaled until the lungs it had been held into were completely empty.
It hissed as it was inhaled until the lungs it was flowing into were completely full.
It covered the sound of his horrible heart beating frantically.
It covered the feeling of his horrible heart beating frantically.
Eyes shut tight until the pressure made him see stars, one hand clamped around the arm sustaining him, Kopaka imagined the loud breathing was the winds of Ko-Wahi passing through him from the top of mount Ihu.
He imagined it so hard and so much that for a single moment he really believed he was there.
He really believed there was still time.
He really believed that.
Gentle fingers combed through his hair.
The breathing never stopped, comforting, familiar.
He couldn't look. He couldn't.
He couldn't look.
He couldn't.
Pohatu breathed.
Slowly.
Sweetly.
Soothingly.
His trembling quelled at last; he leaned into his brother's steady embrace, hard and soft all once.
That hadn't changed.
They waited a long time, very quietly, before Kopaka felt tired enough to start slumping into Pohatu's hold. He was laid down without a word, wrapped still in a body just as horrid as his own was; but somehow it felt better, to have this sort of foreign warmth and pressure coiled around his bones.
Distracting him from his abnormality.
He slipped into dark sleep, still not serene.
But at least, if Pohatu held his grip tight onto him, he could drag him away from the festering organs he'd glimpsed on the Star if their nightmare crawled out from within him again.
