Jason Campbell is struggling to believe what happened on the morning of April 2nd, when he reluctantly called 9-1-1 to report that his brother, Peter Campbell was in medical distress. His brother later died.

KICKING THE DOOR IN, TBH.

so, dalla and gortash have known each other for a long time — since he was fresh out of the hells, really. and they happened upon each other by chance, too, despite their stories being so intimately wound together. at first, in the very beginning, he thought she was some kind of hellspawn sent by raphael to drag him back, screaming. how else would someone in his position feel about seeing a shadowy, furred creature with a mouth full of blood not once, not twice, not three times, but far more often than can be laid to coincidence? turns out, it was mere coincidence. it was fate tethering the two of them together. only once dalla dropped wild shape in his presence out of a pure and unusual (for her) curiosity did gortash realize she was Just a Druid. a cannibal and a murderer and a child of bhaal's blood, certainly, but not a hunter in raphael's employ, which was the most important distinction. and they had a mutual friend in a butcher local to baldur's gate's brampton district. for a while, it was jonas who tied the two of them together. the butcher boy fed dalla scraps that remained from the work he got from the zhents in disposing of bodies, and gortash had a growing interest in his work with anatomy. the three of them formed something of a... bond, i suppose, though it was mostly jonas minding the both of them while they offered up a pittance in return. it wasn't long before dalla and gortash got even more tangled up in each other. she was the one he chose. she was the one he conquered for himself. and to her, he was the one she wouldn't bloody. their affair was the only thing that burned hot inside of dalla's otherwise empty chest. nothing could wrench them apart. nothing dared to try, not until orin. on paper, she was everything that gortash was not, and as he grew older, he thought that he might come to find such a gruesome and self-serving creature unappealing. but the fact of the matter is... that they were the same. their weapons were different. (their weapons will always be different.) their goals were different. (their goals would not always be so different.) but at the end of the day, they were built for a similar purpose with similar hands, similar bones, similar screws.

a character reference sheet for Tav, my chaotic neutral Baldur’s Gate 3 protag. I don’t even have a fancy first or last name for him... just the default “Tav” has felt fitting since I fell into the hellhole of Early Access. he’s a rogue with the thief subclass, but I usually choose magic initiate: druid as a feat so he can have a wee bit more magic and, most importantly, beast speech, so he can talk with Scratch the dog, and Nudge the owlbear cub (and get the hot goss from other critters). I also play Tav in an Eberron 5e campaign, in which his subclass is arcane trickster.

Tav was born and raised in Baldur’s Gate. he is his human mother Flissa’s second child, by a high elf man she either cannot or will not name. her human husband Garrick was not happy about this, but he wasn’t particularly happy when he thought the expected baby was his anyway, so this was never going to be a great family dynamic. Flissa and Garrick’s marriage has always been turbulent and mutually abusive. Tav’s older half-sister, Yora, is ten years his senior, and when she was fourteen, she left home without saying goodbye.

Garrick was a sailor, Flissa was a professional swindler. Tav had special roles in Flissa’s various street grifts, and thought of it as a game, until he was old enough to understand how destitute they actually were. he became good at pickpocketing on his own, which Flissa also took advantage of. it was very easy to pretend being a hungry little urchin, because he was. it was easy for them both to pretend they were battered, because they were. Tav’s parents were not responsible spenders; thank goodness he could go to public school for free when Flissa didn’t want to keep track of him on the street.

when Tav was twelve, there was a massive fire in the tenement building his family lived in, in Brampton of the Lower City. it happened in the middle of the night, when most were sleeping. the fire was mostly contained to the one building, but nonetheless devastating. Flissa got herself out quickly. Garrick was much slower to react to the rapidly escalating situation, and Tav was, well, a very frightened kid who was more or less abandoned. it’s hard for Tav to remember exactly, but the way he understands the course of that night is: he was navigating through smoke and flame down a corridor, when his step-father bowled him over to rush out. Tav was able to get onto his feet again, despite injuries and actively burning. he was resuming his own escape when Garrick got himself trapped under falling beams and debris. Garrick called out to him, but Tav kept running. the rest is a blur; he has vague memories of waking up in the Harborside Hospital, covered in burns, being treated by various healers, neighbors in the cots around him. an unusually charitable cleric at this hospital made it possible for Tav to leave without a hefty bill, healthy but for the scarring on his legs, which had taken the most burn damage. he was reunited with Flissa. Garrick never got out.

Tav’s relationship with Flissa was at its best after the fire, but still not good. the back and forth between “work with me today,” and “go to school or anywhere else, I don’t want to see you” was exhausting for him. he often argued to “work” with her or skipped school to do his own “work,” or else he wouldn’t see any coin or a sufficient meal that day. he started stashing his own money and thinking of taking a page from Yora’s book.

at sixteen, Tav did leave, after an emotional blowout and physical altercation with his mother. he unintentionally concussed Flissa, and while she sat dazed on the floor of their small apartment, he gathered his money, the money of hers that he could find, and simply walked out the door. Tav maintains that the short stint of homelessness that followed was entirely worth it. no more fists bearing down on him, no more yelling, independence. the same old pickpocketing, stealing, and conning (on different streets than his mother’s ‘stomping grounds’) helped him get by until a Guild member offered to recruit him for an up and coming kingpin.

at the start of Baldur’s Gate 3, Tav is 26 years old. he’s been a professional spy under the codename/psued “Locke” for several years now, working for an information broker who mostly deals with pettier nobles trying to bring down other petty nobles. it’s an easy job, people-watching and stealing information; he’s good at it, well paid for it. he doesn’t need to pick pockets or steal trinkets anymore, but old habits die hard, and he sees it almost as a fun little game to himself; he likes to see how much he can get away with before anybody suspects something. he boasts never having had guards or any Flaming Fist come after him, even without Guild protection. he has a small apartment on the third floor of a decent boarding house in the Seatower neighborhood of the Lower City, and that is where he was walking to when the mindflayers’ nautiloid swept over the city.

Ok but why is this scene going so hard. You can see the shadow where the dude's hand crosses into the light shaft. This is screaming for a redraw.

I'm sorry this scene just about killed me as an 11 year old and its killing me now as a 31 year old.

why are his fingees so elegant. Also the animators tried REALLY hard in this frame. His proportions and anatomy aren't wonky, the foreshortening looks correct, they detailed his fucking nose, his fucking pupils are pointed in the same direction and also look like they're focusing on her, the way one ear sticks out because his head is cocked a little (even when he's being sweet he's sassy,) the way his hair is asymmetrical in a way which makes sense to gravity. The expression matches the voice acting!!

They even tried really hard in these sets of frames, too. So did the voice actor tbh.

But also OH GOD THE EMPATHY. She feels like shit for complaining about a piece of jewelry, especially to someone she's roasted before about being uncouth and uncivilized, but instead of calling her shallow like she probably expects, James instead, very gently and softly, shares that he also has a piece of jewelry he wears to remind him of lost family and shows that despite them having such different backgrounds they're really not all that different.

AND THE FUCKING HARP FLOURISH AT THE END??? How THE FUCK is this not setting everything up for the two of them to get together????

I don't know why the way they animated James here kills me but it killed me back then, too. Maybe its the confidence? Maybe its still the rush from witnessing a soft moment between two people catching feels for each other??

Lady Phillips I understand the situation is really tense for the Frillips Polycule but you are going to lose oxygen by constantly gasping for breath like that.

Unit 07: Nature Interpretation through Musi

Hi Everyone, 

I am sure like a lot of you, I really enjoy music and it is a part of my daily life. I have music playing all the time; when I am driving, working out, studying, or cleaning. 

I have never given much thought to acknowledging where music is in nature. The music of nature and the nature of music article made an interesting point that people that live in urban settings do not hear the “soundscape” of nature (Gray et al., 2001). I believe this to be very relatable as I live in Brampton…. In past blog posts, I have talked about my adventures traveling and summers at the cottage. During these times I was more in tune with the “soundscape” around me. When I am in tropical places, I enjoy the rhythm of the waves breaking, the birds chirping and at night, the frogs would croak so in sync. It would also be calming to hear the rainfall at times. Similar sounds would be heard at the cottage. The birds chirping, the waves breaking on the shore after the boats pass, the frogs at night, or the crackle of the campfire. As mentioned in the music of nature and the nature of music article examining the voice of a single creature out of context does not have a purpose (Gray et al., 2001). It is important to examine and study the soundscape together and not piece by piece. The article described it as an orchestra, which I really like (Gray et al., 2001). You could also put it this way, you would listen to the drums, then the guitar, and then the vocals all separately. When pulling it apart like that the sounds lose their purpose but when played all together can make something beautiful.

I find nature in music very often. Have you ever heard a song start off with waves crashing and birds chirping? Or songs that describe the nice weather, palm trees, and beach? I think it is easier to find nature in music because there is so much music. Also, as mentioned in the textbook, music reaches a greater number of people (Beck et al., 2018). This means individuals that live in urban areas or areas that lack a natural soundscape (Gray et al., 2001) can appreciate nature found in music. 

A song that immediately takes me back to a natural landscape would be American Pie by Don McLean. It reminds me of late nights at the cottage sitting by the campfire with my family. It has become a tradition to play this song at least once by the campfire. When I hear this song in a different context it brings back memories of my family and me sitting by the campfire.

I want to second that other anon on the Brampton situation as someone who was born and raised there until I moved away at the end of 2020; yea its the fucking city planning and infrastructure that sucks. Apologies for long ass rant:

Every. Single. New house in Brampton built since before I was born has been a 3-5 bedroom, single family cookie-cutter home. Its especially obvious in the north side where all the recent development is. Every neighborhood is a labrynth, I lived in the same house for 20 years and could still get lost walking around my neighborhood cause of the damn maze-like layout AND CAUSE EVERY HOUSE LOOKS THE DAMN SAME. It takes 20 minutes on average to walk to your nearest bus stop and anywhere between 20 mins to an hour for the bus to show up. If you don't have access to a car, you're fucked.

But even if you DO have a car, there's still nothing to DO there. 90% of the city is JUST HOUSES. Heart Lake, Chinguacousy Park and Professor's Lake are like the only major recreational areas, and out of those Heart Lake is the most amount of nature left there; almost EVERYTHING is zoned for residential. Besides that, there's the big malls, and that's basically it. If you work IN Brampton, you probably either work an industrial job, or a minimum wage service job. Most 9-5 career jobs are in Mississauga or Toronto, which you then have to commute by car CAUSE THERES BARELY ANY TRANSIT INFRASTRUCTURE. I have a whole other rant about the 410 too, but at this point I'll just say it makes the 401 look like a pleasant drive.

Brampton doesn't suck cause of the people living in it, Brampton sucks because it doesn't function like a city should. And it doesn't function like a city should cause it was never designed to be more than a place to hold workers for Mississauga and Toronto when they aren't working.

Also more housing in Brampton won't help the housing crisis in the slightest, unless they're forced to be stupid affordable. New homes are easily several million, even 25yo houses are selling for over a million. Five years ago $1k/month for a 1-bedroom basement apartment was considered dirt cheap, its definitely much more expensive now. There'd have to be legislation involved to force the prices down.
