2023 WRITING REVIEW

I really don't write much but it's the second time @eeverlark tags me in a writing meme (I think) soooo alright lys I'll do it. for you 🫶🏻

1. number of stories posted to ao3: 4, and yes I'm counting the fic I updated in early January because 7 out of 8 chapters were written in 2023

6. work i'm most proud of (and why): every fic I write is simultaneously the best and the worst I've ever written and it remains so until I post a new one.

Honestly though every fic(let) has some things I like and some I think I could've done better.

Having said that, Call It Anything We Want is the first fic I posted on ao3 after a long writing hiatus so. I'm proud of that and of the amount of time I've put into this story as a whole.

7. work i'm least proud of (and why): hmmm see previous answer.

there's a ficlet called The Hunting Trip that I think I could have done better – mainly the conversation Arthur and Merlin have about Uther – but I just wanted to get it done tbh. I do like how it starts though. And Cavall the dog :)

8. share or describe a favorite review you received: I absolutely love any time someone says they liked my characterisation. for example:

your characterization is insane i am so obsessed. its so so good. like. idk how to describe it you just write relationships meshing so well together and not in like. an unrealistically flawless way but in a warm and familiar way. im in awe.

I love this story, your writing, this relationship, this dynamic, your details, your characterization, your everything and I’ve been meaning to tell you for a very long time. I’m sorry for not expressing this earlier. Your continuation of the original story was incredibly, believably, wondrously fantastic.

10. a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: I wrote a ficlet that was supposed to be magically genderbent!Merlin x Arthur smut but it ended up being fem!Merlin x Gwen instead because Arthur wasn't cooperating

“Ah, the court sorcerer himself!” Gwaine exclaims, spreading his arms wide, and some wine sloshes out of his goblet and spills on the floor. He claps one hand on Merlin's shoulder. “Congratulations, Master Merlin.” “I told you to stop calling me that.” Gwaine just looks at him. Head to toe, with a grin that does nothing to hide what he's thinking, and must therefore come across as incredibly lewd. “You look good in green,” is all he says. Merlin raises an eyebrow. “You think I look good in anything.” Gwaine leans closer; close enough to purr in Merlin’s ear: “And even better in nothing at all.” Mainly for the pleasure of watching the tips of Merlin’s ears flush pink. — UNWAVERING

12. how did you grow as a writer last year: well I actually wrote something which is a good starting point

13. how do you hope to grow this year: I'd love to write a multi-chapter fic with an actual plot someday. also get better at titling things

15. anything from your real life show up in your writing last year: nothing apart from my desire to kiss Colin Morgan on the mouth

16. any new wisdom you can share with other writers: sometimes done is better than perfect. just get it done and move on it's fine if it's not a masterpiece. at least that's what I often have to tell myself but also I suspect I have adhd

17. any projects you're looking to starting (or finishing) this year: I would like to finish my Sefa-centric WIP, I wrote like 8k words but I'm not sure where it's going

No one asked but the plot of my wip (tentatively titled "the soul of the world") is that Orella, a young girl, was adopted by a knight (Alonso) after the destruction of her hometown, and she wants to become a knight just like her adoptive father, who also happens to be regarded as the most powerful man in the world due to his mysterious ability to control the Four Great Curses. The Curses are dangerous magical beings, each embodying certain fears (Oblivion, Darkness, Decay, Delirium) and that are capable of causing great destruction. No one knows how Alonso is able of controlling them, and hes a sort of legendary figure in Caval, the kingdom where the story is (mostly) set. Orella wants to be just like him, to be the greatest knight who ever lived, but learning more and more about her father and the kingdom he serves, she starts to question her place and her loyalty. She also grows worried about her two adopted siblings, Corazon and Azucena, who have magical abilities that Alonso is using for his own ends - with no regards for their wellbeing. Orella is trapped between her dreams of glory, her love for her family, and her growing sense that something is off about her home

"Who's a good boy? You are!" Arthur gave Cavall, his dog, a pet. Arthur loved Cavall and always took good care of him. It had been a while since they'd gone to the park, though. Cavall was huge, some unknown mix that started out as a big puppy and grew into an even bigger adult dog throughout his life. He was the blond's near constant companion.

Holding on to his leash, the young man led the dog at a gentle pace through the paths. It was a good day for being outside, warm and quite sunny. After a while of walking, he stopped at a bench to rest and give both of him and himself some water he'd brought in bottles in a messenger bag he carried with him. "Needed that, huh? Me too."

Leonardo Cavalli

Once again, another fell into his trap. Humanity was beautiful thing, he thought in his elation of the moment. He was free, forever broken from the story tellers grasp. He was his own person now, and in charge of a body that allowed him to feast, once again.

Yet, the body still rejected him. Memories plagued him of a past not of his own. Weak emotions tugged at his mortal body. Specifically towards a woman in particular. A sweet thing that shared a common interest in beebies. He hissed at the thought as he slowly wiped a stain off his chin. He needed to end the last sinew of connection tethering him. He hated to be caged and under the influence of others.

Slowly he walked to his clothes he neatly sat aside to pull them on. Only to pause before a mirror to look at his body. The vision before him making him smile as he admired the flesh. Long ago he possessed another before the story tellers chains wrapped around his neck and dragged him to a dark cage. Reaching up he traced a hand over the soft skin of his arm only to wince. Despite the body being in good condition he was growing to a point where the mortal flesh was not able to contain the pilot in control. With the world abounding with magic and his own insatiable tastes for it he grew beyond the confines of his body. Yet it still held some degree of usefulness for now.

He needed one last feast before he was able to fully step unto his own and he had a devil of a plan. He threw on his clothes as he put action unto thought. It was quite simple really, he knew of two Bellisario women who had some degree of interest in his body, specifically Marissa and Belle. The latter being more easy to manipulate. He recognized the emotion pulling him towards one of them that the previous helmsmen had for Marissa, something he would pry into for his own gain.

Stepping out of his victims house into the warm night air he set his foot towards the Bellisario estate, under one arm he a book with a certain fairy tale and a host forever trapped inside. With one stone he would take three birds before being set free and to evolve. The excitement of finally being free kept his step light and even he began to whistle. Under the full moon he walked casting a ominous shadow as he walked. In the distance behind him a mortified scream called out and after a few minutes rushing past him Seraph towards the scene of the crime.

“Good luck fellows...I think we will be seeing you again soon.” he coo’d after them.

He woke again, the same tired feeling of not enough sleep and the sudden weight of the world. He reached over to the bed beside him to feel it empty and cold.

He gave a moment to take a breath and steel himself once again. For he knew this story, all to well in the past months, or years. He stood up and found his clothes. It never changed, it was always where he left it no matter where he left them. Yet he moved onward drawn to a conclusion set well in advanced.

He was slated to wake up and find his love, but not the one he loved. There was another outside the story, that only he saw in the most clear of moments. She had a beautiful smile, and bright eyes. He remembered the faintest of touches and how she smelled when they briefly were close.

The events played out as they always did, he would go into his job. Learn of his missing wife, and later in the day hunt down a lead that would ultimately lead to his death. He did not know how many times this had replayed only a vague notion he had done this before. He was not all in control of his actions, like he was a puppet in a script. He was growing weary, the fabric of his mind unraveling around him, only combated by the ever intensifying need to see her face once more. He was losing himself, but as he did more he dreamed of her and more the story shoved him to his untimely end. \

Over the last few years, I have gone out of my way to try and point out actors that weren't necessarily top billed or currently well-known but have still given top performances in amazing movies. Sometimes these people have outshined their costars, but they have always played an integral part in the film. John Cazale played five key roles in 5 fantastic, Best Picture nominated movies over 7 short years, and then tragically passed away. Here is a list of his cinematic performances and it will tell you why he stood out so much as an actor.

SPOILER WARNING FOR SOME VERY GOOD MOVIES!!! I TRIED TO JUST SPEAK OF GENERAL PLOT, BUT SOME THINGS MENTIONED COULD SPOIL SOME OF THE EXPERIENCE!!!

The Godfather (1972)

Not a bad part for a first major acting role, Cazale plays the second son Fredo Corleone, the least intelligent and weakest of the children in the Corleone family. He is passed over to lead the family when his older brother is assassinated, and for this he holds a grudge. Fredo's poor decisions are a constant threat to his family, and it becomes obvious in the first movie that he will have to be dealt with at some point if the family is to remain in power. Cazale had been performing in a theatre troop alongside Al Pacino and Richard Dreyfuss and was spotted by well-known casting director Fred Roos. He was suggested as a character player to Francis Ford Coppola and his career went up from there.

The Conversation (1974)

It is hard to believe that Francis Ford Coppola put out two outstanding films like this in the same year, but it is not surprising that he chose John Cazale to be in both of them. Gene Hackman plays a shut-in surveillance expert that taps into the wrong conversation and his life becomes in danger from the client who asked he do the bugging. Cazale plays the partner to Hackman's character that does most of the footwork. He plays almost a Watson like character to Hackman's Sherlock Holmes and the film ends up feeling like something I would expect from Alfred Hitchcock. This is a fantastic movie that was also inducted to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. I am somewhat surprised that it is not on the AFI top 100.

The Godfather Part 2 (1974)

Cazale reprises his role as Fredo, and, this time, the character is causing so much trouble that it results in attempts at killing members of the Corleone family. It all stems from Fredo's jealousy of his brothers and that he was never considered to be head of the family. His poor business decisions and willingness to make deals behind his brother's back just to have a larger piece of the action speaks of his conniving and weakness. He famously is given the kiss of death by his younger brother when it is discovered that a business deal had given a rival crime family influence among the Corleone group, had gotten the head of the family indicted for racketeering, and even allowed an attempt on his brother's life. Fredo is such a memorable character and Cazale plays him so well as both weak and simultaneously powerful enough to be dangerous.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

This is a strange film about a bank robbery gone wrong since the robbers are after the money with good intentions. Cavale plays one of the bank robbers named Sal who is the only person who seems like they would legitimately kill one of the hostages. Cavale seems to play a good stooge in his parts, a soldier who is not too bright but still has great aspirations for power and position. Sal really seems to think of himself as a Robin Hood type thief despite having none of the cleverness. This was the first major motion picture for Cavale that was not directed by Coppola, but he did get to costar next to his good friend Al Pacino.

The Deer Hunter (1978)

This was Cazale's final role as he had developed lung cancer that metastasized to his bones. He knew that this would be his last film and it was through the prodding of director Michael Cimino by his friend Robert De Niro and his girlfriend at the time, Meryl Streep, that he got the part. He again plays a weak character in a group of guys who often bully him, and he doesn't appreciate his low standing. He does not go off to war like the other men, yet he tries to get the same respect. In fact, I would say that Cazale played almost all his characters as desiring valor that they did not earn. What is heart breaking about this film for me is that one of the very last scenes that Cazale would film is at a funeral, not six feet from Meryl Streep. There is a realism in this scene that comes from Streep and Cazale looking at the coffin knowing he would soon be in it, and she would be grieving his death. The film is full of powerful scenes, yet this one always strikes me the most.

Although Cazale was never nominated for any awards himself, all of his films were nominated for Best Picture and three of them took home the prize. He was remembered by his friends and costars as a great guy who dedicated his life to the craft. With so many actors taking on roles just for a paycheck, Cazale is the only actor I can think of who's entire filmography is nothing but classics. Rest in peace after a job well done.

the story is set in the kingdom of Caval. 8 years ago, when orella, corazon and azucena were children, their hometown was destroyed for reasons unknown, and they were the sole survivors, saved by alonso. alonso is an aging knight, currently regarded as the most skilled swordsman of the kingdom and the king's closest advisor. he took the kids as his own, and raised orella and cora to follow his footsteps as knights. azucena, too young and weak for the training, stayed as a lady of the court.

orella was always alonsos "favorite" and everyone knew it - because she had a talent for soul magic, specifically for being a soul collector, someone who can steal others souls and get their abilities. alonso had great hopes for her, but for certain reasons she never embraced her magic, which stagnated her growth. despite that, her dream still was to be a great knight like alonso, a dream shared with cora, whom alonso never payed much attention to because he lacked magical skill.

at the start of the story, these two are rivals, and their relationship is very complicated. meanwhile, azu was completely left out by the family, and was also an outcast at court. that is, until she starts manifesting a talent for witchcraft... a form of magic that isnt well regarded, but that alonso seems to think could be very useful during a time of unrest in the kingdom - the conquered countries are starting to question the order of things, and alonso is looking for a new powerful weapon to wield against them.

orella is starting to realize that alonso is not as great as she used to think, and has to decide who matters more to her, her fathers praise or the wellbeing of her siblings...

This is by far the craziest, most elaborate scheme Honey has ever cooked up. She admits it's risky, possibly life and friendship ruining. However, in order to gain back her friend group in peace and harmony, it was a risk she was willing to take.

Could she have done it without she and Ricky giving their best Jody and Yvette? Probably. She knows nothing brings them together than a disrespectful man. And boy Ricky has flown way past disrespectful. The girls were heated and ready for battle.

So, Honey was gonna lure them here under promises of plotting out the attack. However, when they all get there, Honey will reveal the truth and explain the real motive for why they're all here. To hear one another out and for emotional healing.

She figured have it out in the backyard by the pool, that way nothing gets broken. She has a long wooden table, food cause it's a great conversation starter, no alcohol cause it blow her entry cover, pillows to relax on when it's not somebody's time to talk things out, and she was wearing a vintage Roberto Cavalli maxi dress for maximum healer energy and glowing pregnancy mystique.

She just needed everybody to get here. In all honesty, she waa terrified. She didn't want to lose her friends, but she knew they'd be mad. Hell, Bunny might cheese grate her face. She didn't know. She just wanted things back to where they were.

And back to where they were they shall go.

Hi! I saw your bio that you were italian would you mind recommending some shows or books to learn the language? Trying to get fluent thankss

Hii, I'm so happy to know that you're learning Italian, not so many people try since it's only spoken here and it's not the best country to move to, especially now, so this thing made my day, thanks

And maybe I'm not the best person for this thing, but I'll try and tell you some names or titles - mainly because it's been a while since I started reading only in English and I usually watch shows in their native languages

Also, the first thing I'd advise you would be listening to Italian music (I've only lately started to listen to it cause I've always kinda hated it - cause I tried to listen to the wrong kind yk). Maybe try to avoid trap music cause you wouldn't learn anything, but indie and pop, we have some good stuff. If you want names of singers and bands I'll make another post about it:)

I don't know what genre you prefer, so I'm just gonna put some random books:

Divina Avventura (by Enrico Cerni and Francesca Gambino) - it's basically a retelling of the "Divina Commedia" by Dante and it's for kids so it has simple vocabulary

Tre Cavalli (by Erri De Luca) - it's the story of a man who moved to Argentina for love and that after the death of his lover decided to join in the fight against the dictatorship (it has both present and past simple tense, so you might wanna have a translator beside you)

Ma le stelle quante sono (by Giulia Carcasi) - this is a love story told by the povs of two young people named Carlo and Alice and this also tells the story both in the present and simple past tense

Then again, since I'm no good at recommending Italian books, one thing I did lots of time to learn English was rereading books I had read in Italian but in English. You already know the plot and you already know the vocabulary in your native language, so it should be easier for you to grasp exactly what they're talking about

I read online that it's not really good to start off with fantasy/dystopian/sci-fi books cause they have plenty of vocabulary that isn't used on a daily basis, but let me tell you it's all bullshit cause I only read fantasy books and I have a C1 level of English and I can ensure you it's not because of school (it obviously isn't just because of fantasy books either, but they sure helped me a lot)

For what concerns movies and shows, my favourite Italian movie is "Mio fratello rincorre i dinosauri" by Stefano Cipani. It's honestly so good and it doesn't have many dialects or accents, it's pretty basic Italian, so it shouldn't be a problem to understand it.

A show that basically all Italy watched and loved was "Braccialetti Rossi". It has some hard topics such as cancer and death, but you'll fall in love with the characters right away.

Two other shows that I've never watched but know are a big part of modern Italian culture are "Un Medico In Famiglia" and "I Cesaroni"

BUT

Listen, you risk not understanding a n y t h i n g if I reccomend what are out best shows at the moment (things like Gomorra or Suburra), cause we also need subs for some Italian shows since they talk in strict dialects most of the time - the other shows aren't worth watching imo and you'd feel like you're doing homework and for what concerns movies I can't really think of anything right now cause I just woke up. Anyway, Italian dubbing is one of the best in the entire world, so watch your favourite movies or movies you've wanted to watch for a long time but in Italian (on Netflix and Prime Video there's a shit ton of them) and you should be fine
