John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

John Wick: Chapter 4 delivers the kind of expertly coordinated, clearly shot action you rarely see in movies today. 169 minutes sounds long but in execution, it isn’t. You’re excited the whole way through. The conclusion, however, leaves me with mixed feelings. Is this the last episode in the series? If it is, there are many elements that ultimately, didn’t go anywhere. If it isn’t, John Wick: Chapter 5 will have to do some serious limbo-ing to get out of the weird corner it's gotten itself into.

Continuing his campaign of vengeance against the High Table, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) provokes the Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård). His plan? Challenge him to a duel. If John wins, he will be free of all obligations towards the High Table. Unfortunately, John can only do this if he is readmitted to a crime family, a feat easier said than done.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is an action movie but I’d also compare it to an art film. The plot almost doesn’t matter. The Marquis, Elder (George Georgiou) and Harbinger (Clancy Brown) all fulfill complex roles and enforce policies/rules I’m not sure anyone understands. Narratively, the secret (?) society has all sorts of honorary traditions, which makes the plot complex but also not really. If you miss why this person is now on John's side when they weren’t before, that’s ok. What matters is the stunt coordination, cinematography, special effects and the way the results make you feel. Why do civilians keep dancing while men kill each other in the middle of a club? Because it looks good. That's why.

A world as obfuscating as this one should push you towards not caring about anything but this third sequel engages you with crazy characters and concepts that make you go “Where is this going"? Donnie Yen plays Caine, a blind assassin forced out of retirement to kill John Wick. How can someone who can’t see belong in a world that begins and ends with guns? You want to know. You want to find out what his ties to our hero are and what circumstances turned him into this Zatoichi-like warrior. Did he lose his eyesight? Was he always blind? Similarly, Scott Adkins plays Killa Harkan, this supremely greasy member of the German Table you just know has a thousand stories to tell just looking at him.

As nice as it is to have colorful characters living in a world that stretches beyond the borders of the screen, what you came for are the action scenes. Can they top what we saw before? Yes. The biggest and most impressive is a long battle shot from above which has John making his way through seemingly endless ruined rooms, taking out opponents with incendiary rounds while tracking - and being tracked - by two other opponents. You can’t even imagine how it was choreographed. The fights are flashy, full of bone-crunching stunts that will make you wince and often end in some kind of wild turn that takes you completely by surprise while giving you a tour of multiple cities. The film isn’t all that concerned with realism and is that much the better for it.

My primary criticism is that John Wick: Chapter 4 is both too close- and open-ended. This film's fallout should keep the story going but it's also very definitive as a final chapter. It's like director Chad Stahelski couldn't pick one or the other. If this is the end, it's not fully satisfactory. John Wick doesn't even share a single scene with his dog and his relationship with man's best friend is what started this campaign. Elements and characters introduced previously are forgotten (Halle Berry's Sofia, for example) or don't have the kind of payoff that makes the detour we took to get there seem worth it. Shamier Anderson as Mr. Nobody for example. His interactions with John and the Marquis are terrific, but at the end, he feels like a cool character writers Shay Hatten and Michael Finch wanted to include but ultimately, didn't know what to do with.

Anyone who has seen the previous John Wick films should see this latest installment. Even if you haven't, the visual razzle-dazzle of John Wick: Chapter 4 is worth it. Whether this is the last time we see John Wick and this world is hard to see but I hope not. Despite everything good about this picture, there are still many unanswered questions. John Wick: Chapter 4. Review.

Even as a big fan of this series. up to this point watching the newest and best entry thus far felt like. a major level up of everything this franchise does well and what has made it so desirable for imitation.

Full disclosure. This author is a confessed huge fan of the John Wick franchise. That said much as he would argue all the previous films are all great the two initial sequels are a little bit heavy only slightly obtuse lore of the assassins and Continental visitors coming after our monosyllabic antihero. EXCLUSIVE: In the world of Highlander reboots, there can still only be one…and it’s a good one at that.

For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot which has Henry Cavill aboard to star as the eponymous Scottish swordsman and John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski set to direct.

We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords. The team is eyeing a 2024 start.

This will be welcome news for AFM buyers whose pool of pre-sale projects has been diminished by the ongoing strike.

The new movie will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline — spawned four sequels and three TV series including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul. Queen memorably provided the soundtrack for the original movie.

Producing the reboot are Joshua Davis, Fast And The Furious producer Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski (thru his 87Eleven Entertainment production company) and Louise Rosner.

The current draft of the screenplay is by Mike Finch. The late Peter S. Davis, the producer of the original Highlander, initiated the development of the new film. Summit first acquired remake rights to the original in 2008.

Former Superman and The Witcher actor Cavill remains in high demand. Among movies in post are Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle and two Guy Ritchie projects, including WWII pic The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

Stahelski has directed all four John Wick films, which have been a goldmine for Lionsgate, taking more than $1BN. He previously talked about the new Highlander as the first in a trilogy but we’ve not had word whether that’s still the case.

Cavill and Stahelski were attached and reported before the strike.

The arrival of the Highlander reboot is a shot in the arm for the AFM, whose business has been hampered by the SAG-AFTRA strike. This and Kevin Costner’s Horizon movies, which we told you this week would also be on sale, are the two biggest-budget prospects revealed for the market so far. A number of packages haven’t come together or aren’t being officially announced due to strike restrictions or anxiety over optics. Frankly, given the limitations posed by the strike, I’ve been surprised at the number of new or reworked projects that are on sale (many are shooting in Europe). There are still a handful of pre-sales packages for buyers to get their teeth into, even if more action may be done this market on completed and near-completed movies.

Finally, a definitive end to John Wick. John Wick was a really good one-shot that stretched out too long.

Sixteen year old Ruby and Clancy don't quite fit up the tree on Amster Green anymore, but they still sit there to talk about anything and everything all the same. Ruby finds herself musing on everyone else's sudden apparent interest in the opposite sex, and the fact that her life doesn't seem to be heading in that direction. A house with Clancy would suit her far better than with any of the guys and girls of Twinford, anyway. Clancy may not entirely understand, but he's always there to lend a sympathetic ear and remind her that they're still young anyway. Adulthood is a long way off, and who cares what comes next when you have your friends with you right now?

Just an excuse for me to ramble about platonic connections and the aromantic disconnect from your peers via Ruby Redfort, because if there's anyone that gives me aroace vibes, it's our favourite teen secret agent.

John Wick: Chapter 4

The mayhem continues in this wrap up to this Wick saga. And I was surprised that, with nary a written piece of dialogue, Shay Hatten (Day Shift) and Michael Finch managed to put more story in this sequel than the most recent chapter, which was a welcome improvement. There are also some very nice touches and call-backs to the beginning of the tale to help tie this long, dark, tea-time of the soul together.

Despite the world-trotting and massive fight scenes, returning director Chad Stahelski not only had fewer words to work with but also a smaller, central cast around Keanu Reeves (The Matrix: Resurrections). Reeves spends the story in a deadly dance of shifting alliances with Ian McShane (American Gods), Donnie Yen (Mulan), Hiroyuki Sanada (Mortal Kombat), and Shamier Anderson (Invasion). There are also 100s of stunt people (or so it seemed) filling out various mercenary groups and bounty hunters as well, but at times they are literally faceless.

And then there’s Bill Skarsgård (Soulmates) as a controlled psychopath representing The Table along with Clancy Brown (Dexter: New Blood). Skarsgård gives us a dark and clever villain, but with flaws that can be exploited.

And, of course, seeing Lance Reddick (Resident Evil) in this final role was bittersweet.

Oddly, the choreography was a little wanting. It felt staged far too many times. While I’ll often advocate for the beauty of that kind of effort in fight displays, in this case it was unintentional. It was also rather disturbing to watch this film on the heels of Extraction 2, where the fights are so clinical, even while they are extremely well directed. The effect in Wick is that it nearly glorifies the violence, while in Extraction it is anything but. The movies have different intents, but they have a heavy cross-over audience, so it isn’t unfair to compare them.

Stahelski could have trimmed this nearly 3 hour finale down a little without harming the impact. And a bit more research about Paris geography wouldn’t have been amiss when planning the final run. But all that aside, Wick proved to be the little indie that could, even if it outgrew its boots a little and got lost in the mayhem. In the end, though, it is a simple and effective tale with the second and this last flicks being the best. And, of course, Wick as a franchise isn’t over. This was one story, others are possible, which the tag after the credits makes clear if the studio’s intention it wasn’t obvious.

But Wick is also not for everyone. It is hyper-violent from beginning to end…usually with complete dispassion or emotional consequence. At least Wick takes a serious beating throughout, though he heals and functions with injury at an absurd level. But this is more dark fantasy than gritty reality. So if constant stabbing, shooting, fisticuffs, animal attacks, and arrow-play disturb you just don’t even bother. It definitely gets a bit much after a while.

Reaction: ± I loved it. It was tense and basically non-stop action for most of the movie, and yet somehow i didn't really notice how long the movie was. The fight choreography was marvelous and it somehow continues to escalate every movie and not become stale. The characters were great and you really love and hate some of them in equal measure for their characters and the performances.

I didn't watch any of the trailers in the lead up to the release and i kinda forgot where we left off but that wasn't at all an issue. It's of course still kinda ridiculous how much of a beating John Wick can take and still keep going but it's definitely fitting of his character through all the movies. The ending tied up quite nicely as well, like they could probably come back if they really wanted but it's a good ending, i think.

Memorable aspect of the movie: + The background music. Intense and complementary. + The characters and the actors. Hiroyuki Sanada, Donnie Yen, Ian McShane, Clancy Brown. Lance Reddick 😭

Il déclare la guerre à la table haute dans une ouverture semblable à celle de "Lawrence d'Arabie" alors que Wick chevauche un cheval à travers le désert marocain pour affronter le sommet de la pyramide des enfers, The Elder (George Georgiou) dont vous vous souvenez peut-être de "John Wick : Chapitre 3 – Parabellum. Il possède l'alliance de Wick après que notre anti-héros l'ait utilisée comme serment de fidélité pour épargner sa vie et lui donner plus de temps pour tuer TOUT LE MONDE.

Il a assassiné le père de Katia (Natalia Tena), la sœur adoptive de Wick et chef de la famille Ruska Roma qui siège à la table haute. Rappelez-vous, ils ont pris John comme orphelin et l'ont élevé pour qu'il devienne un exécuteur. Elle accepte de ramener Wick dans le giron s'il assassine Killa, ce qui conduit à une séquence d'action frénétique dans une boîte de nuit berlinoise à l'atmosphère rave. Et il y a le merveilleux Clancy Brown, célèbre pour son rôle de Kurgan dans "Highlander" et vu plus récemment dans "Dexter: New Blood", qui rejoint la franchise en tant que Harbinger, un membre de haut rang de la table haute qui sert de le médiateur dans l'apogée du film. Écrit par Shay Hatten et Michael Finch, qui ont succédé à Derek Kolstad, scénariste des deux premiers épisodes et co-scénariste du troisième film, "John Wick 4" amène l'histoire à une conclusion satisfaisante. La fin est parfaite. Tout le reste aurait été un déshonneur pour une franchise aussi passionnée réalisée par Chad Stahelski et Keanu Reeves. Assurez-vous de rester pour la scène post-générique qui change l'ambiance de la fin du film et fait allusion à un avenir avec un nouveau départ.

John Wick: Chapter 4 Trailer

The eagerly awaited “John Wick Chapter 4” marks Reeves’ return to the beloved assassin of few words. While the plot remains under wraps, the film is expected to pick up after Wick was delivered to the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) at the end of “John Wick Chapter 3,” after trying to topple the assassin hierarchy The High Table. The film also stars Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, Bill Skarsgard, Clancy Brown, Donnie Yen, Shamier Anderson, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, and Rina Sawayama. “John Wick Chapter 4” is directed by Chad Stahelski from a script written by Michael Finch and Shay Hatten. Stahelski previously told The Hollywood Reporter that “Chapter 4” will find “new and interesting ways to have John Wick suffer” through even more insane stunts — as if killing a man using just a library book wasn’t enough. The second-to-last “John Wick” film also marks the beginning of the end of Reeves burning the candle at both ends as Wick.    Reeves and co-star McShane are set to appear in spinoff film “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas as a graduate of the Director’s (Angelica Huston) ballet academy who is forced out of retirement after a gang murders her whole family. The titular unnamed killer dancer has to take down both the gang of murderers and the corrupt local European government that protects them. The film is based on a character who briefly appeared in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” played by professional dancer Unity Phelan and simply credited as “Ballerina.” A Starz prequel series titled “The Continental” is also in the works about the hotel for mercenaries, set in the 1970s. “John Wick Chapter 4” premieres in theaters March 24, 2023.
