It was this young adult disillusioned with life (played by Atticus Shaffer????) being called upon to help save the earth by teaming up with his favorite childhood superhero who failed him and made him so disillusioned: Dr. Dolittle (played by Eddie Murphy) ??????

It was a fucking,,,,, Dr. Dolittle trailer, except if Dr. Dolittle was a gritty superhero film?????

(I have one distinct memory of Atticus being like “You want me to help the doctor when he couldn’t even help me? >:/“ and that he lived in a shitty apartment)

Ah, the 1830s. One of the few historical decades where the 1960s tall hair doesn't look too awfully out of place. The silhouette of the dress is quite good for suggesting the period, and if the floral decorations seem practically restrained, that can be explained by the fact that it's a simple summer dress for a day at the fair. The floral elements are a combination of embroidery and applique (see below for a close-up).

Why does it matter that another book was censored one time? Because the Holocaust happened, does that mean it's no big deal if there's another genocide now? Why even bring this up? If your argument is that we've already had censorship of a beloved children's book and things turned out fine free expression-wise, may I remind you that the whole issue we're discussing is that things are surprisingly terrible free expression-wise.

Prescient matters. It matters in what is thinkable, in what is considered ok. Chronology matters, because you can't put your ascribed cause chronologically after the event. My point in bringing up that Newberry award winning Beloved Children's Books were censored by their publisher in a very similar way in 1988 was not to argue any particular point, but to introduce FACTS.

My childhood books included the soft-banned at the time old children's classic, Little Black Sambo. And, uh, there's a reason that book got pulled from general circulation in the children's picture book section.

Another Beloved Children's Book of my youth were the Elsie Dinsmore books... Oh wait, those were also an edited 1999 edition. Edited by Evangelical Christian publisher Zondervan. To cut down on the racism.

This isn't about free expression; all the authors involved were long dead by the time their works were re-edited for new editions, and we all know they'd never have been published in 1988 or 1999 or 2023 if they hadn't been published previously, as they weren't to current tastes.

Like, I'm not saying that more recent publisher "self" censorship of new editions of children's books that there's enduring demand for aren't potentially concerning... But you really should understand the context and history of the practice and how widespread it's been before you start making pronouncements about the practice as a whole.

Watched the new-ish Dr Dolittle while I was sick with Flu and I liked it, it was ok. However, I was really disappointed they didn’t subvert the dead wife trope and have her be alive. I don’t know a lot about the books or Eddie Murphy films, and whether that’s integral to the plot, but it was just very bland. They kept going on about how Lily was the best adventurer, better than him, she had all these amazing skills. So it makes you think wow surely someone this smart and skilful would have found a way out of the shipwreck and over to the magical island(THAT ONLY SHE KNEW THE WAY TOO). I really believed they were gonna find her alive on that island and then when they abruptly cut back to Queen Victoria it was like, ohhh so she actually did get fridged . It just stopped it from being a great film. Yes, it’s about moving on from grief etc, but ya know, I’ve seen that story before and it would have been nice for the wife not to be dead for once.
