i really can't believe Dracula 2000 is my least favorite film in this b-movie series. i blame it partially on Father Uffizi and Luke being such fun characters, though i'd also argue it's because the plots are actually kind of creative in Ascension and Legacy. like the idea of translating Dracula into a modern time is a cool idea on paper, but 2000 didn't really hit the right notes. the idea that Dracula is so old that he was originally Judas was a neat twist, but otherwise it just didn't feel interesting enough whereas Ascension and Legacy were trying new enough things that they felt more engaging

Castlevania III Dracula's Curse Part 1: The one with 100% less edgy writing
Castlevania III is often viewed as one of the best games in the series, at least within the context of the Classic games
And...yeah this is absolutely one of my favorite games in the series! I have my issues here and there but overall this is pretty much Castlevania 1 but more.
More stages and longer to boot. More obstacles. More music better graphics and even more characters!
Graphically this may just be one of the best games of the era, just a great level of detail in the backgrounds that help give this game a genuinely haunting looking atmosphere even more than its predecessors.
Music wise this game is one of the best in the franchise, ESPECIALLY the Japanese Famicom version which featured enhanced audio thanks to the greater memory space and other technical stuff
I’m playing a translated Japanese rom because, as many know, the international versions of this game had its difficulty tampered with in questionable ways.
Generally speaking damage is now dictated by level rather than enemies. What this means is that in the early stages enemies and bosses will be weaker but by the end they’ll be much harder. Add to this some slightly altered enemy placement to be a bit more dickish and some nerfed moves here and there and we have a recipe for frustration
And believe me: this game is already more than hard enough as it is!
The main new feature of this game are partners! You can unlock 3 new characters though you can only bring one of them with you alongside Trevor
Here we see Grant! Anyone not recognizing him may have started with the Netflix show where he dodged a massive bullet by not being featured
Poor Grant is like the ugly duckling of Castlevania 3: he’s barely mentioned in futire games and he doesn’t really have much of a legacy unlike the others
Unfortunately I’ll continue this tradition since I will only make 2 playthroughs of this game, one for each major level route, which means one of them has to be with Alucard as a partner and the other either Grant or Sypha...and the latter is my favorite in the game so sorry man
Anyway Grant should definitely shut up everyone who claims that Classicvanias had stiff controls because they’re “old”, since he can actually move in midair!
Granted the jump still feels heavy so it’s still not very graceful, but this still means Grant is a more mobile character than the others
His main ability is being able to climb over any surface. This can be used to essentially skip some platforming sections here and there and it makes Grant the most ideal character for pure level traversal. My only issue is that his climbing can be janky: when he takes a turn you have to immediately press the d-pad in the direction of the climbable surface otherwise you’ll just slip off. Sometimes if you take a turn too quickly you’ll slide off entirely.
He’s offensively weak though in the Japanese version his standard attack is actually an infinite throwing dagger, which is certainly much better than the dinky close range knife he has internationally
But we must say goodbye to Grant and welcome another new character, one that has the ability to truly break the game in various ways...

Pazuzu in Castlevania...
Arguably the most mysterious character in the series.
Pazuzu is an oldie, first appearing in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse...as the final boss:
Pazuzu in Dracula's Curse, his design taking inspiration from 1st edition Advanced Dungeons of Dragons depiction of Pazuzu from 1983's Monster Manual II, most visible with both having beaks, as opposed to other depictions of the Mesopotamian demon king.
This either Dracula taking his form, Dracula merging his spirit with Pazuzu's petrified form, or Pazuzu taking over as the final boss after Dracula's defeat. The lore, even Japanese one is unclear, and this is from were we even get notion of Pazuzu being a separate character.
To be more specific, Pazuzu was meant to be "the Devil", also referred as "Evil God/God of Evil" (邪神／邪心 Jyashin) Dracula sold his soul to in old lore for his powers, vampirism and army, as well as selling Alucard's soul. This was overtime retconned, with Alucard being born a dhampire being established in Symphony of the Night, Alchemy and Chaos, as well to a degree Death (seemingly) taking Pazuzu's place in the lore. Only thing is...Pazuzu still reappeared, even in games after these retcons.
He first re-appears in Harmony of Dissonance, first there being shown as a damaged version of his petrified form/statue/idol,
and then as one of the bosses near the end of the game...coming out of what seems like a sealed portal, being in place usually were Dracula's throne is.

While many think Pazuzu here mostly (beyond his name)references the Demon/Leviathan boss from also Dracula's Curse and Baphomet, I think it's more than that. It's just in this depiction, design wise he is based on the unearthed more recently statue of Pazuzu (from Tell Sheikh Hamed, Syria), which make it clear he has horns on his head (the horns from earlier statues are misinterpreted as ridges on his head):
Pazuzu's attack patterns, are also meant to reference Dracula's classic Demon Final Form.
And that takes to Pazuzu's next appearance...in Curse of Darkness as Dracula's final form, even more similar to the statue I brought up, having now 4 feathered wings like it:

He also takes here cues from Ultimate Dracula forms from Legacy of Darkness and Circle of the Moon, but the similarity to Pazuzu is obvious, along the fact Curse of Darkness is a direct sequel to Curse of Dracula, probably referencing the final boss fight in it, if with new twists.
As in Harmony of Dissonance, Hector also encounters in Curse of Darkness the statue of Dracula's Curse Pazuzu:
Indeed, the statue's presence in games seems to be be a foreshadowing Pazuzu will appear in some form in the game.
Even more curiously, in the official Curse of Darkness manga (supervised by IGA/Koji Igarashi himself) Pazuzu is referenced (as 邪神／邪心 Jyashin/Jashin, as he was called in the Japanese version of Dracula's Curse, mistranslated as Evil Lords in the official English version):
What is his role after the retcons, or is he just a reference to retconned lore?
It doesn't seem he is just a reference, seeing the mention in the manga by IGA/Igarashi himself. Pazuzu exact role in current canon though, is left up to pure speculation. He might be mighty demon Dracula struck a bargain with, before he became (fully?) the Dark Lord/Demon King. He might a previous Dark Lord/Demon King/avatar of Chaos. He might be some manifestation of Chaos that Dracula merged with to become the Dark Lord. We can only speculate, as possibly we will never know, seeing Koji Igarashi left Konami.
And why chose Pazuzu over many other demons, including some like Satan who would fit? Well, I will discuss that...in a next post, (hopefully) tomorrow.

Castlevania games I have played to completion via shenanigans:
Castlevania (emulation + save scumming)
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (emulation + save scumming)
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (emulation + save scumming)
Super Castlevania IV (TECHNICALLY I didn't complete this one but I got, naturally and organically on the SNES, to THE VERY LAST SCREEN but did not defeat Dracula. Would have probably worked up the gumption to do so if the last point at which you can get a continue code wasn't before a segment where you are walking up several flights of stairs that are collapsing behind you as spiked wheels roll down from you from above and as the controls for climbing up stairs, for some reason, work differently than they do for the entire game before this)
Castlevania games I've played a significant portion of but not beaten:
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood - it's superb, it's hard. Got up to Death on the PSP version and rage quit, have gotten less far on the original
Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 - this one sucks, brah
Castlevania games I haven't played:
Vampire Killer - Simon again. This is basically an alternate version of Castlevania I that plays somewhat differently because you have to find a key and an exit for each level - sounds interesting, but worth playing? I have no idea.
Haunted Castle - This was an arcade game. Apparently there's a port for PS4 and switch. Maybe I should look into it.
Castlevania The Adventure - Gameboy Game. Haven't played it but have played the virtual console "remake" of it. Might pick it up if I happen across a cart of it in the wild.
Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge - also on Gameboy. Also might buy it if I see it.
Castlevania: Dracula X - this is a scaled down, SNES version of Rondo of Blood. Rondo is near universally considered superior. Maybe I should pick it up since I can't frickin beat Rondo
Castlevania Legends - another Gameboy one. Later decanonized lady Belmont. Same as the other Gameboy Games
Castlevania Chronicles - PS1 remake of Castlevania. Might be worth a look idk
Castlevania (aka Castlevania 64) - I am in possession of this game and a Nintendo 64. HOWEVER. It also requires a memory card or.... rumble pack (?) thingy for N64 that I don't have and have been unsuccessful in trying to acquire. So. ????

Castlevania: Judgement - terrible looking Wii fighting game. Character designs by the artist of Death Note, which on paper sounds like a decent match, but he had no respect for anything. Have skipped this one and will continue to do so.
Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night - mobile puzzle game. ??????
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair - multiplayer XBOX Live game. I remember hearing ok things about it. Is it even still playable though?

So if any of my followers recall, last year I was writing fanfiction for my master’s thesis. Well, that actually worked out! And this fic is the result, which I can finally share. I’ll be posting it a chapter at a time, giving myself a week to do some editing in between. Additional details below!
Fandom: Dracula 2000 Trilogy
Characters: Father Uffizi, Luke, Elizabeth Blaine

Summary: After Elizabeth disappears, Luke decides to accompany Father Uffizi on his journey in hopes of somehow saving her. But the more time passes, the more he loses hope that he will ever find her. And the more time he spends with Father Uffizi, the more he realizes that Elizabeth isn’t the only person he cares about in need of saving.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth finds herself in the blood-drenched halls of Dracula himself, surrounded by darkness and depravity, clinging to the last shreds of her humanity and praying for death.
What remains to be seen is whether Luke will be the answer to those prayers, or find some way to save both of the people that he loves.
