"Petunia" is the new LP from Tonstartssbandht (made up of brothers Andy and Edwin White and started in Orlando, Florida). When I saw the name I thought they might be a Scandinavian band, and in some ways they do remind me of bands such as Kiki Pau or Dungen.
But there is a vocal style here that recalls Field Music or even the sweet melodies of Kings of Convenience. And without a doubt, some of this music reminds me of Yes, Radiohead or The Smile. They toured a ton...I wasn't at all surprised to learn they toured with 工工工 (Gong Gong Gong).
Hard to believe this is the band's 18th album and second for Mexican Summer. A lot of catching up to do!

What will you do? [Random Adventure #10 - Part 2]
It’s well after 11 pm when you finally trudge back into Slaryn house, and you hardly imagined you’d be so happy to see the place. Back in your room, you dump your stuff down on the chair, wash up in the bathroom, rinsing away the traces of dried blood on your hands, then soon collapse into the bed; clean and relatively soft.
The next morning, you wake more than an hour later than your usual early time, with sunlight peeking past the edges of the curtains, and the clock on the table reading 8:36 am. With no pressing need to get up, and no immediate plans, you remain lying in bed for a while, letting your body rest a bit longer as you continue to enjoy the warmth trapped in the blankets.
You think back to the events of the night before, and wonder what became of the thief. Did he wake? Did he find someone to take care of his injuries? You suddenly remember the items you took from him and decide to take a closer look.
You throw open the curtains and illuminate the room, looking down at the street below. People are already going about their business, moving back and forth on foot, or occasionally by small carriage.
You retrieve the confiscated stolen items from your bag, spreading them out on the bed. Wallets, money bag, amulet, loose money, dagger. You leave the two knives hidden and wrapped up in a bundle of your old clothes on the chair.
Neither the money bag nor wallets contain any identifying information save one, which has a small white card with The name “L Byrd” handwritten in a box on one side, and a series of cryptic numbers and letters on the other, as well as a date from several months ago. Not much to go by. You make a note of how much money is inside each of the wallets and the moneybag, and add to that the total of the loose money; you end up counting just over 250 cogs.

The 8-inch dagger is light and thin, with a brilliant silver blade etched with rune-like engravings down the centre. It has a decorative guard, a grip inlaid with 4 small, clear gemstones, 2 on either side and a disk-shaped pommel with another rune shape engraved on it. You slide the dagger back into its sheath; gold-brown leather with silver metal trimmings.
You stare at the loot, wondering what you should do with it. Maybe you should try turning it in to the local law enforcement. Perhaps they could track down the owners, or those that were robbed might report the items missing.
Somewhere outside, you hear the muffled sound of a clock chiming. 9 am. You decide to think about it a bit later, but for now, you want breakfast. The hotel does provide breakfast for the guests, so you’d better get down there before it gets too late.
You get dressed, opting to wear your loose, comfortable outfit this morning. You remember the night before again, and check yesterday’s clothes; fortunately, there is no sign of a hole in the back of your top, and see no signs of blood, though the dark material may be hiding a dark secret.
You saunter downstairs and head into the small canteen, where a cook idly potters about with plates and trays of food, and two other guests sit eating their breakfast. You spy a small buffet-style table and go over to see what’s on offer. Even before you’ve reached it, the scent of fried meat reaches you, but by the time you get there, you’re already starting to have flashbacks. Delicious smell, horrendous food… You stare at the meat strips, wondering if they too are lying in wait, ready to strike you with disappointment or pure horror.
“Is this going to be your final meal, or..?”
You snap out of it and turn to see Ameronis standing beside you. It takes a moment for you to fully recognise her though; after all, you only saw her face for a short time. She’s not wearing her mask or travelling robes at all, but instead is also wearing a casual dull-coloured outfit; in this, you can see that she does have a somewhat stocky build and medium-long brown hair that flows around her face. She laughs at whatever your expression was before you came to.
“Did the bread just tell you it killed your whole family? What’s going on?”
You groan and tell her not to ask; you’d much rather forget the stupid antics from last night. This only makes Ameronis even more intrigued.
“Oh? Well, now I have to hear it! What exactly did you get up to?”
You relent and agree to tell her an abridged version that omits certain parts, but later; you don’t want to talk about your actions in a quiet room with strangers within earshot. Ameronis glances around and suggests that you both grab some breakfast and take it back to one of your rooms; you can eat and talk in peace there.
Ah, fine. You turn back to the food on offer, while Ameronis grabs a tray and plate and begins to help herself. Considering your near-starving state yesterday, you decide to get a decent helping of the ‘safe’ foods; some fruit, a couple of slices of toast and a fried egg. You also take a small bowl of porridge oats, which you pray is just regular porridge rather than some cursed Dernan version, and, for the sake of science, a single strip of the fried meat. Finally, you pour yourself a hot cup of tea. You wait for Ameronis and glance at the cook as you stand with your tray, ready to walk out of the canteen. You wonder if she’ll yell at you for leaving the eating area, but when you follow Ameronis out of the room, the cook doesn’t bat an eyelid; either she didn’t notice, or she doesn’t care.
Upstairs, the two of you sit at the small table in your room and start to eat. Wanting to get it out of the way first, you nibble on the meat and immediately regret it; whether it’s the oil that it was fried in or some light coating of seasoning, the taste is appalling. You drop the meat on the tray in disdain (having considered flinging it across the room instead), and wash the taste away with some tea. When Ameronis asks if it was that bad, the floodgates open and you rant about your experiences with the cuisine so far; Ameronis had asked that you tell her about any good places that you found, but you instead vent about the exact opposite.
Ameronis listens to your complaints, amused but sympathetic, and, after apparently developing a death wish, asks if she can sample your rejected meat strip. You warn her not to if she values happiness in life, but allow her to try. She cuts off a little piece and eats it, remaining composed as she does.
“It’s very…um…unique…” she says, diplomatically. She does not ask for another piece.
You give the porridge the stink eye as you prepare to take a small spoonful, but are more delighted than you ought to be when you discover that it is, in fact, just regular porridge, and pretty good at that. You laugh to yourself at the absurdity of the situation in general. A quick taste test of the bread and the egg clear them as acceptable too, so at least there’s that.
As you eat your food, Ameronis enquires about the rest of your evening and your exploration, pointing out that having spent the whole night in her room, she’s eager to go about and explore herself today and happy to hear your report and views so far. You go back to the beginning and recount your trip along the high street, the places you saw and leaflets you gathered, and ending with your inadvertent misadventure in the maze of alleys. Ameronis takes note of the places you mentioned, considering whether she might check them out herself later, but shows mild concern when you talk about wandering around alone in the alleys in the dark.
“Wow. You’re lucky you made it back in one piece. I heard that the crime rate is pretty average here but it’s been increasing lately and there’s a few hotspots that are causing some trouble as well. No idea where those are though, but, y’know…”
You casually mention that you might have wandered through such a spot, and when asked, you give her a condensed version of your encounter with the thief; how he snuck up on you and you subsequently beat him up and confiscated a stolen necklace and wallet from him. Now you’re wondering whether you should turn the items in to the police or if that’s a lost cause.
Ameronis is initially surprised when you mention being attacked, but having fought with you twice already, unsurprised that you managed to beat him so easily, remarking that he’s lucky he’s not dead.
He might be…
As for the police, she seems unsure.
“It’d certainly be a noble thing to do. You may not be able to tell who the owners of those items are, but the police force should have detectives; they’d have to figure it out. If they do find the owners, maybe they might give you a reward? Perhaps they might step up their patrols in that area. But be careful though; sometimes you go to the authorities, trying to do the right thing, and they, looking for an easy victory, find a way to turn you into the culprit. Depends on how crooked they are. Perhaps the thief goes to the police and says that he was attacked and robbed of his money and necklace. Then later, you show up claiming that you “found” said items and boom; you’re the one in jail, while the items are handed back to the thief with no further questions asked. Then they get to parade you around and congratulate themselves on catching “the bad guy”…”
She shrugs.
“Call me cynical for sure, but I’ve seen too many stupid scenarios like that play out, so I tend to consider the worse. It’s your call though. Do what you think is best.”
You eat in silence as you consider her words and your own thoughts, but haven’t quite made up your mind when she asks you if she can see the leaflets you got. You reach into your bag and hand them to her. She reads each one in turn, then asks if you have any plans for today. You look out of the window as you sip the last of your tea, and tell her that you have no concrete plans, but you will check your map again and look for any interesting spots to explore, though you plan to give the alleyways a wide berth this time.
“A wise choice.”
With breakfast finished, Ameronis stacks the plates and trays and offers to take them back downstairs, bidding you good luck on your upcoming exploration. After she leaves, you sit at the table and pour over your map again, trying to burn into your mind the layout of the immediate area and some local landmarks to keep you oriented. You also try to figure out where you got lost yesterday but have to give up when you discover several sections of paths and buildings, which look like tight, messy weaves on the map, are too tightly knit to include any of the street names. Also, this map only shows a certain radius of the town centre; several of the weave areas are cut off by the edge of the map, suggesting that most of them are quite large. It turns out, your fear of getting lost deeper in wasn’t unfounded…
You struggle to decide whether to leave the map or bring it, but decide to bring it; normally, you prefer not to be seen looking at a map in public, so as to not out yourself as a tourist and make yourself any kind of target, but the alternative is worse.
Clearing your day bag of any unnecessary items (and replenishing your bandages from the dwindling larger supply in your main travel bag), you prepare it for today’s adventure. Before you leave, you hide away the stolen loot and knives under a loose floorboard. Then straightening yourself out in the mirror, you head out to experience Derna in the daytime.

Dungen — En Är För Mycket och Tusen Aldrig Nog (Mexican Summer)

En Är För Mycket och Tusen Aldrig Nog by Dungen
Sweden’s Dungen have always rendered their musical adventures accessible by virtue of front man Gustav Ejstes’s uncanny melodic sensibility. As wild and woolly as their jams can get, Ejstes is a pop composer at heart, with many of his more succinct songs sharing a vivid and direct approach with Paul McCartney. Even though he’s singing in Swedish, his vocal parts resonate as they’re sung so stridently. It helps that he’s backed by a killer band, comprising Reine Fiske on lead guitar, Mattias Gustavsson on bass, and Johan Holmegaard on drums. Anyone lucky to have seen Dungen live will know that they can get pretty far out during their instrumental interludes, something that 2020’s Dungen Live barely succeeded in documenting.
En Är För Mycket och Tusen Aldrig Nog (which translates to “One is Too Much and A Thousand is Never Enough”) is the first studio album proper since 2015’s tremendous Allas Sak. The majority of the first half finds Ejstes at his most melodically direct — including singles “Nattens Sista Strimma Ljus” and “Skövde” — while the second half indulges some questionable studio experimentation. The highlight of the first half is “Möbler,” a shimmering waltz with a lengthy Hammond coda. The real eyebrow-raiser in the second half is “Var Har Du Varit?” which is built around the “Amen” drum’n’bass break. The drum sample itself doesn’t necessarily drag the song down, especially when Fiske is doing his utmost to integrate the new ingredients into Dungen’s palette; it’s the inane keyboard bass that really falls flat.
Where “Var Har Du Varit?” stumbles, “Klockan Slår, Den Är Mycket Nu” finds a winning cut-and-paste aesthetic. It seems to share as much in common with early Guided by Voices’ radical shifts in timbre as side B of Abbey Road’s commitment to finding flow from song snippets. Then, closer “Om Natten” sends off the album on a high note, with Ejstes going full Lennon at the piano — a gorgeous way to end a frustratingly inconsistent record.

What will you do? [Random Adventure #10 - Part 3]
Confused and with no specific plan now, you figure you should think about what you’re going to do for dinner. You don’t really want to have to resort to your snacks; you could try out one of those other eateries that you discovered earlier. Then you remember that you wanted to try the first food place that you found yesterday during the day, to see if it’s any less busy. But now, after your experiences so far, you’re almost certain it’s also going to be another horrific experience. Three out of three so far; do you really want to make four? Are you willing to risk it for the sake of science and so as to not miss an opportunity? Or is the risk too high? A reckless haze comes over you; at this point, you feel like a grizzled veteran and it can’t get any worse; if it goes badly it’s just more of the same, but if it goes well, that would be a pleasant surprise.
Feeling defiant, you retrace your steps back to the high street and locate the shop. There are a few people waiting in line, but it’s nowhere near as busy as it was last night. When you finally have your order and take a bite, you almost laugh at how bad it is. Except you’re too busy crumpling up your face and trying not to wretch to do that. You can’t even tell if it’s worth the extra money in comparison to the other shop. But, you tried it, hated it, and you will not regret never knowing for sure. As before, you eat what you can and leave the rest. Then you leave the place, vowing never to set foot there again. Again, you’re starting to feel a little nauseous, and your earlier feeling of recklessness has been replaced. Why can’t these people just make decent food and stop causing you to waste so much money?! You decide to go back to the hotel to sleep it off and mope in peace.
Just as you make your way into the lobby of Slaryn House, you run into Ameronis who is on her way out. She takes one look at your annoyed face and chuckles.
“What happened this time?”
You announce that Derna can’t cook and she laughs.
“Ah, still no luck? That’s too bad. Here; why don’t you come out with me? We can check out that bar you mentioned and see if Derna is as bad at producing drinks as they are at producing food.”
You have nothing better to do and you hadn’t considered judging the drinks, so you agree to tag along but decide to first change your outfit for the approaching evening.
Tumblr media
[AI image produced by Stable Diffusion]
The powerful essence of your first drink blasts you in the face the second before you take your first sip, and the strong fizz hits you as well the second after. Rust-coloured and with a gentle foam, it’s ice-cold and has a very intense flavour; fruity and full-bodied. It’s actually really good. At least Derna has this going for them.
You take a sip of your other drink. It’s not as fizzy as the first but it too has a strong flavour and is sweet and spicy. It’s also quite nice and comes in a larger serving than the first. Already you’re starting to feel a bit better.
Ironically, it’s Ameronis’s turn to get a less-than-ideal experience; she describes her drinks as weak and bland, with both of them being more savoury than sweet. She does like the emerald-green colour of one of them though.
Hearing that you enjoy your drink but Ameronis does not enjoy hers, Josey offers her a small free sample of the spicy fruit juice that you have. She graciously accepts his offer and she too enjoys this beverage. She refuses to allow him to swap her drinks for this one without charge though; he’s already been too kind.
You continue to sip your drinks and listen as Josey talks to Ameronis and makes polite conversation; asking if you’re both from out of town, how long you’re staying, and what you think of the place so far. Ameronis tells him that you’re staying for a while and are just trying to get the feel of the place but have been struggling to find decent food so far.
Josey immediately suggests that you try some of the shops on the high street including the one that you went to earlier today, but you are quick to blurt out that the food in those places does not sit well with you
He thinks for a moment and suggests that, if you don’t like Erclean food, you should definitely look for food outside of this area; the high street goes through the Erclean Quarter, an area with a high population of people from some distant land called Er Clee. As a result, many of the food shops here specialise in their cuisine, but it’s not for everyone.
Your mind flicks back to the other eateries you saw earlier; maybe there is hope for them after all. You thank him for the advice and make a note of two other food places he suggests for you.
You mentioned that you went to see the Bloodlines play earlier. Ameronis asks how it went and Josey snorts; Ameronis looks between the two of you and asks if it’s that bad; Josey says that he’s never seen it but a couple of the actors, loud and annoying, have been stopping by periodically and he would prefer they didn’t, though he won’t talk about them much more than that. You wonder which ones he could be referring to.
Ameronis asks you for your opinion of the play. You finish your first drink, move back to the second, and attempt to summarise the play and your thoughts about the performance. It wasn’t good but, it wasn’t bad? It was definitely…”entertaining”, although probably for the wrong reasons. And you don’t want to get started on all of the plot holes and nonsensical elements. But you do, and within five minutes, the two of you are in a fit of giggles as you attempt to unravel the mysteries of the story. You’re feeling pretty great right now.
Josey continues attending to the other patrons as necessary but pops in to dismiss the play more each time he hears another plot hole that you bring up. He offers to refill your first drink but you decline. You still have a little of the second one left.
Afterwards, seeing as the play isn’t to his liking, you ask him what he does for entertainment when he’s not working. He laughs somewhat nervously and suggests that the things that he would find entertaining would certainly not be the kinds of things that you, refined, high-class ladies, would be interested in. You wonder how refined he would consider you to be if he knew about your camping out in the wilderness, fighting bandits on the road and beating up thieves in alleyways.
Ameronis attempts to convince him that she’s seen and done a lot in her time and is always looking for new things and that people or activities that aren’t always considered squeaky-clean tend to be the most entertaining, but he insists that you both would be better off looking for entertainment elsewhere. Ameronis looks at Josey.
“Josey, my dear, I’ve experienced more than my fair share of brawls, brothels, and back alleys.”
You notice that Josey turns a little red but Ameronis continues.
“But fine; will you at least tell me if there is a decent place to play cards around here? I do like a good game of chance.”
Josey recovers as he thinks for a moment. There is a rival bar nearby (which he encourages you not to buy drinks from), that frequently hosts a bunch of people who drink and gamble most nights. He warns that the stakes are usually quite high, but they tend to be a relatively friendly bunch despite that, and how rowdy the place usually is. They tend to only meet up later in the evenings though. He gives her the name and location of the bar on one of his own business cards. She takes it and thanks him.
Looking over it, she casually mentions to you, loud enough for him to hear, that she is considering checking out The Pit later tonight; perhaps if she can get enough money from this new place, she can bet on some of the fights. Josey immediately looks horrified.
“If you have a good eye, you can easily make a small fortune. Unless they’re fixing the fights of course.” She turns to Josey. “Do you know anything about The Pit?”
He stares at her, opening and closing his mouth like a fish before stammering.
“Well, I… I don’t know about match-fixing… It seems pretty regulated from what I can tell…”
Ameronis claps her hands together.
“Great! Even better” she turns back to you. “You get less money from regulated fights, but it makes it easier to figure out who you should bet on. And, regulated fights are much less likely to let fighters go too far; it’s always a shame to see such strong and handsome young men get beaten to a bloody pulp, or even killed in some cases… Well, it looks like I’ve got my evening planned!”
Josey looks somewhere between defeated and amused.
Glancing out of the window at the slowly fading light, Ameronis thinks for a moment.
“You said you didn’t eat properly at that place? How ’bout we go and grab something from one of the new places, then go check out “Stardust” for a while?
