[Warning: Graphic (some very graphic) shark-fishing pictures at the link.]
"Suhardi isn’t your average snorkeling guide. Born on the Indonesian island of Lombok, he’s spent his life on water. While he now seeks out sharks for the enjoyment of tourists, he once hunted sharks to help earn money to feed his family and educate his two children.
Suhardi was a fisherman for more than 20 years. He first started fishing working on his parents’ boat, but was then asked to join the crew of a shark boat where he was told he could earn a lot of money. Back on deck, he looks embarrassed to divulge what a meager wage it was, but finally confesses he earned around $50 for up to a month at sea.
Now he and 12 other former shark fishermen are part of The Dorsal Effect, an ecotourism company that helps ex-shark hunters find a new vocation. Each week, the team takes groups of tourists, schoolchildren and university students to off-the-grid locations and guides them around pristine reefs. Each trip is designed to take guests on an exploratory journey of both the shark trade and marine conservation through the eyes of the Sasak people of Lombok.
Tumblr media
Lombok is a hotspot for marine diversity, sitting just east of the Wallace Line, a biogeographical boundary separating Asia and Australia and their respective fauna. Pristine coral gardens and around 80 species of sharks can be found in its waters. The island is also part of the world’s largest shark-fishing nation. Only the whale shark (Rhincondon typus) is protected in Indonesia; all other sharks can be legally caught.
The Dorsal Effect first launched in 2013, a year after Suhardi met Singaporean ecologist Kathy Xu, who had traveled to Lombok to find out more about the shark trade. The diminutive but quietly determined Xu wanted to protect sharks, but because she knew shark fishing was poorly paid and dangerous, she wanted to hear the fishermen’s stories too. They told her how once they could fish for sharks close to shore, but now with the shark population dropping, the fishermen said they needed to travel farther out to sea, only to come home with a relatively poor catch. The reduced catch also meant reduced pay, so they often couldn’t cover their costs...
Yet, when Xu asked why fishers didn’t seek out another trade, she learned they didn’t want to be separated from the sea. They saw it as part of their heritage.
But as they spoke longer, the shark fishermen talked about the coral gardens that could be found under the waves, ones that only they knew about. Inspired by a whale shark diving trip she’d taken with scientists on the Great Barrier Reef, Xu had an idea. “If such spots exist,” she recalls telling the fishers, “I could take tourists out with you and pay you more than you earned shark fishing”.
At first, Xu guided the former shark fishermen on how to become eco-friendly tour operators. They dropped anchor away from the reef, served guests plant-based dishes, and made sure all trash was taken back to shore. But then Xu saw that something special was happening: The former fishermen had started to take the guest experience into their own hands, making sure tourists felt at home. Suhardi painted “Welcome” in large letters over the front of his boat, fitted green baize to the top deck for outdoor seating, and hung curtains in the cabin so his guests could enjoy some shade.
Suhardi has already bought a new boat with his earnings from snorkeling trips. “Every day is my best day,” laughs Suhardi, whose smile always travels from his mouth to his eyes.
While they were receiving tourists from across the globe, there was another group that Xu wanted to reach out to. “I think it was the teacher in me who felt impassioned about influencing the young,” she says. She reached out to schools and created a five-day program that would help students understand the shark trade and local conservation efforts. During the program, paid for by the school and students, participants would not only meet the ex-shark fishermen so they could ask them about their lives, but also hear from NGOs such as the Wildlife Conservation Society about their efforts to slow the trade. The Dorsal Effect also hired marine biologists to host nightly lectures and help the students with their field surveys...
The students were faced with the realities of the fishing trade, but they were also encouraged to take a balanced view by The Dorsal Effect team. The villagers weren’t just taking the fins, and throwing away the rest of the shark; they processed every piece of the animal. While they did sell the meat and fins to buyers at the market, they also sold the teeth to jewelers, and the remains for pet food.
The Dorsal Effect also takes students on an excursion to the fishermen’s village, a small island that lies off the coast of Lombok. Marine biologist Bryan Ng Sai Lin, who was hired by The Dorsal Effect team, says that on one trip with students he was surprised by how quickly the young people understood the situation. “One of them said it’s good to think about conservation, but at the same time these people don’t really have any other choice,” Lin says....
Conservation scientist Hollie Booth of Save Our Seas, which does not work directly with The Dorsal Effect, says the need to provide legal profitable alternatives to shark fishing is critical: “We are never going to solve biodiversity and environment issues unless we think about incentives and take local people’s needs into account. These kinds of programs are really important.”"

TITANS
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION
Titans are magical beings that are responsible for modern life on the planet.
There are 3 types of titans.
Aerial - dragon-like titans with wings for gliding short distances and display. Their breath is molten metal.
Terrestrial - wolf-like titans with large muscle strength. They release a sonic boom from their jaws
Aquatic - mosasaur-like titans with front flippers and a powerful tail. They’ve developed a spine that mimics the appearance of coral to hide from predators and prey. They can inhale water at a speed fast enough to create massive whirlpools.
All titans share glyph magic, the ability to create life, and growth rate.
Of the three titan types, aerial and terrestrial titans share territory, while aquatic titans are more solitary and less abundant. Some titans have wings that are covered in vibrant patterns to display their importance, as these are often elders, royals, or generals. These wings cannot be used for flight and are more of a way to say ‘look at me, I’m important, respect me’.
The ‘skulls’ on their heads are not actually part of their skeleton - it is a piece of head armour that evolved from simple plates into a whole helmet
Titan societies are very open. There is a royal bloodline, but they are more laid back and less commanding. They value respect and bow before the earth. Titans follow a unique calendar and hold festivals for important events, including full moons, hatchings, marriage, and music. The most important tradition held by titans, however, comes when they reach an age of 1000.
HIBERNATION
Because titan ancestors gained magic through the earth, modern titans are forever grateful and believe that they owe their lives to nature. They spend their lives learning their own unique magic and teaching others, and then can choose to enter an eternal hibernation. This hibernation is where they rest for the rest of eternity, not dead, but not awake either. Over time, during this sleep, their bodies are reclaimed by the earth. Their hides turn to stone, trees grow on their backs, and life can flourish over their bodies. Depending on where they rest, they will form different biomes. Since the majority of the planet is ocean, most will form islands or coral reefs.
Tumblr media
The same will occur if titans are killed. Even newborns can become small reefs or sea stacks. A titan’s bones will continue to grow even after death which leads to absolutely massive archipelagos and eco systems. Some land masses formed by titans include:
- the Boiling Isles [terrestrial titan] formed when an adult titan was struck down by immense magical force
- Jotunheim [aerial titan] the result of a titan warrior being strangled and impaled. Location of Titan Trapper Island
- Purgatory [aquatic titan] formed when an adult titan became trapped in shallow water after being injured in battle
- Archipeligo of Insanity [aerial titan] formed from the bones of a titan killed by a swarm of grimraptors, which are usually only pests
- Isle of Humiliation [terrestrial titan] the result of a young titan becoming impaled on sharp sea stacks. This is a more recent development and the individual was likely one of the few young survivors of the Titan/Archivist conflict.
GROWTH
Titans are able to create life from non-living things, most notably their own eggs. A titan will infuse their magic with a boulder which over time will form into an egg and embryo. Another examples would be the statues in Echoes of the Past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What makes titan eggs special is that they can hold off on hatching for hundreds of thousands of years, waiting for the perfect conditions. The hatchlings are as helpless as a newborn human and need constant supervision to not get hurt. They mature rather fast, with their growth slowing down around their teenage and adult years.
Titans are considered ‘pups’ until they reach adulthood. They are born with two straight horns that will expand and bend as they get older. For royal titans, the wings will come in during their years as a young adult.
POWERS
Instead of creating things out of thin air, titans warp the elements and world around them in the form of glyphs. Modern witch magic comes from this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each variant of titans has their own unique power.
Terrestrial - sonic shouts that explodes outward from their jaws
Aerial - searing fire breath that can melt most materials
Aquatic - inhaling tons of water at a speed that it creates violent whirlpools
All titans have blood that has fused with magic over millions of years of evolution. This blood is so potent with magic that it creates rips in reality if mixed with water.
Titans create life with their own bodies. Upon death, not only will they form land, but new, magical life will emerge from their blood.
CULTURE
Titans value art, specifically murals and sculpture. All throughout titan dens and palaces are marble carvings displaying the many life forms they share the planet with. Murals fill their hatcheries and rooms, and they have several festivals throughout the year to celebrate their creativity.
Tumblr media
Will add more to this post as I think of it

Fic Prompts: Meddling Mar Monday
(From a bit later in the story)
The waters surrounding the coastal desert were cool and green, and so undisturbed within the cove that beyond the breakers everything took on a breathtaking clarity. Colorful fish darted back and forth after food, while poisonous eels floated serenely in place beneath the dock, enjoying the shade. Deeper down, the light that filtered through the waves colored the world a watery blue, disguising brighter colors.
Jak kicked his feet and spiraled down to the edge of a slightly sickly coral reef. It seemed to span the entire mouth of the cove, turning it into more of a lagoon. Just beyond, the depth dropped sharply. Jak stared down into an abrupt expanse of dark water and couldn't shake the feeling that something was staring back. He would have expected that to frighten him, or at least unsettle him. But somehow, Jak wasn't afraid. He swam backwards a foot or so, and eagerly scanned the depths for a glimpse of larger animals. He knew he'd seen something from Damas’s tower. Was it watching him now? Was it bigger than even the various species of Lurker Sharks?
Jak had glimpsed the Colossal Shark Brutter kept at the fish cannery once. He'd been overwhelmed by the sheer size of the fish. The idea that creatures so powerful and vast still swam in their waters in spite of everything was really sort of humbling. Brutter kept it in captivity simply because he could think of no way to safely release it without mass casualties. Jak wasn't even sure how he'd caught the thing in the first place.
An orange jellyfish drifted along behind Jak, and its tentacles briefly grazed his shoulder. A jolt of pain, not unlike electricity, shot down his arm. Annoyed, Jak shook the limb out, sending the oblivious jelly tumbling away. Well, they couldn't all be harmless, he supposed. Shrugging off the pain as he always did, Jak made a leisurely climb to the surface to suck in another lungful of air, then dove below again to immerse himself in the jewel colored world beneath the water. A glint of metal caught his eye, yards away, and he grinned. There we go.
When he was a kid in Sandover, there were always orbs washing up on the shore from sunken Precursor cities and research stations. Surely, the Wastelanders couldn't have found all of them.
While nowhere near the tens of orbs he and Daxter used to scoop out of the shallows, the orb Jak found encrusted with barnacles was worth perhaps thrice as much as it had been when he was Mar’s age. Satisfaction filled his chest as he examined the sand-scoured weight. This would at least give them a start on buying enough food and water to last the week. Jak carefully slid the orb into the pouch he'd made out of his scarf, taking care not to damage the two small conch shells and three cone shells he'd already picked up. An orb wouldn't do him much good if it smashed his rent payment, now would it.
Though he was reluctant to leave the lagoon, Jak knew his supply of air was finite. In his dark form, he could've stayed under for far longer. But he was not ready to let these people know about that part of his life. Even if the ocean did seem like a safe place to release dark eco buildup.
When Jak waded out of the surf, his fingers were wrinkled and his hair was a mess, but he couldn't have cared less. It was as if months of tension had uncoiled and drifted away in the lagoon, leaving him lighter for it. Humming cheerfully, Jak wrung seawater out of his tunic and bent down to pick up his boots. A glance upward made him pause.
Mar was still with the six kids who had been playing with catapults on the shore, but now they were all clustered together, staring at him.
"What?" Jak asked self-consciously. His mood was beginning to deflate.
The oldest child there, roughly twelve or thirteen, pointed at the water.
"You went to the edge of the reef!"
Confused, Jak looked to the one-armed teacher for explanation. She looked as startled as her charges, but also a little impressed.
"You've got guts, I'll give you that," she said after a second, "But then, Seek here says you're new to Spargus, so I guess no one told you about the reef."
Jak laced up his boots and stood, brushing off sand. "Oh. Well, I didn't touch it, if that's what you're worried about. It doesn't look that healthy."
The teacher -- Korah, Daxter would later tell him -- grimaced.
"Yeah, that's our fault. Last generation didn't understand the damage yellow eco residue can do to coral. Took a couple years to pinpoint the shells ejected from the turret as the problem."
She shrugged.
"It's healing at its own pace. But that's not what the kids are concerned about. They thought you were going to go over the reef."
Jak actually laughed, surprising himself.
"Into dark water before I've had a chance to get a headlamp? Right. I'd want to be able to see what's down there."
A boy about Mar's age grimaced comically. "That's not allowed! You'll get eaten!"
"No I won't."
"Yeah you will!"
Jak boldly tousled the kid’s already messy black hair.
"I'm not afraid of sharks."
Korah cleared her throat.
"It's not sharks you have to watch for."
She pointed out towards the small island Jak had spotted past the reef. "That's Mother and Child Island. We don't swim there, and we don't take motorized boats there. The sounds attract the Scylla."
Daxter left off playing some kind of marble game with a little girl and cringed. "Uh...you mean the beastie on the edge of old maps? The "here there be monsters" Scylla?"
"I thought those were made up!" Jak looked just a little too eager.
"Nope." Korah shook her shaved head. "She's real, alright. Don't know how many of her kind there are out there, but she likes this coast for the smaller squid that hang around, and the occasional swimmer."
Daxter's fur puffed out. "Jak, if you try to take me past that reef, I'm gonna unionize."
Jak shaded his eyes and stared at the water as if he could see the colossal squid.
"So has anybody fought her or chased her off before?"
Korah's tone turned sharp. "Don't even think about it, newbie. Not only is that a fool's errand, it would unbalance the ecosystem."
Another one of the two older kids nodded. "The Scylla eats the squid and smaller sharks so they don't come bother us. If there's no Scylla, something bigger will move in."
Intrigued, Mar asked, "Bigger like what?"
The girl bent slightly to look him in the eye. "Ever seen the Colossal Blue shark?"
"No," answered Mar, and at the same time Jak and Daxter answered, "Yes!" With wildly different levels of enthusiasm.
"Yeah." The girl tossed auburn hair over her shoulder and straightened. "The Scylla keeps the Colossal Blues out of the area. Teacher says we give her her space, and she gives us ours as long as we don't swim past the reef."
Reluctantly, Jak agreed that the rule made sense in context. But now he really wanted to see the giant scylla.

I tried to hold back, but— it itches now. Guys, may I just pipe up in the tag regarding the derek of it all, and without much buffoonery on my part this time (apologies; buffoonery is a reflex)?
Tumblr media
Derek being unromanceable is not a silly joke or tease, nor is it an oversight. It's not a call for fixes, it's not an injustice.
Derek is a test of your integrity. A moral lesson to be learned. Derek is an allegory.
I refuse to believe that he is just there, with no subtext. Even if he is; too good and juicy of a coincidence. Fits into the eco narrative too well. No, I think it's intentional. I think even his name is intentional; it's of Dutch origin. (wiki: History of Indonesia; colonial era)
This game was/is being written by people from a high-context culture, people raised on narratives that rarely, if ever, contain only one layer. In a country that's been ravaged, among other things, by colonialism. Then, later on — and to this day — by hordes of inconsiderate tourists, by oil companies, by widespread deforestation in the name of farming palm oil, etc etc. In short, by capitalism and consumer culture. They came and they offered money. Offered something seemingly easy and appealing. And in exchange, they proceeded to ruin the land, and are doing it to this day.
So there he stands, this lovely Derek-from-outside, all sexy and manly and conventionally attractive; and there your mesmerized eyes linger on his muscled, hairy chest, his bulging arms, his alabaster skin with a light dusting of pink, his chiseled features, his styled faux-hawk, his ‘builder's’ attire that looks like it was made for a stripper, not a builder. He's so APPEALING, so hot, so TEMPTING, so enticing. Surely he means no harm, right? Surely he was placed there for a reason? Surely the reason is you? Mmmmmm he's so friendly, staring at you with these dreamy eyes… with that sexy smirk…
But what is happening behind Derek’s wide back while you're gawking? Ah. Some hired workers are constructing an office of an oil drilling company … A foreign company that is complicit in spills, in the damage to the coral reefs; a company that plans on taking advantage of the sorry state of the island — by offering an easy (destructive) way out. The company that is, for all intents and purposes, your antagonist in the game.
Unless you're a soulless sellout, your main goal is to drive them out.
When the office is all done, Derek is gone. Why would he not be? And why would he be interested in an actual relationship with you? Yes, of course the reason is you. You’re just a dummy to be duped, and he has done that; he's fulfilled his mission. He was tasked with enticing you and distracting you; he needed to stop you from entering the construction site, to stop you from doing, saying, thinking anything but ‘oh wow now that's one maximum derek, I'd love me some of this meat’. Has he succeeded? If you are now enthralled by him so much that you are pining, if you gave in to greed — despite so many characters already being there for you to woo — then you have made the Error. You have failed to learn the moral lesson. It has meta-spilled over through the fourth wall.
And you have turned into a pig.
Before you clobber me for saying the latter; I am alluding to Spirited Away. Remember how it starts? Chihiro's parents see the food and are enticed by it. Mmmmm looks mouth-watering ... Aren't you hungry, Chihiro? Come and eat. Just grab it. Forget your manners, forget your worries. Indulge. Dad has a lot of crisp money on hand, some of it on credit cards! ... It does not even occur to him that the price to pay might not be money; the capitalism-induced entitlement, the false sense of security, the illusion that money buys everything and that everything and everyone can be bought with money, and that Greed is Good, already has a strong grip on Chihiro's parents.
See: motifs; food and what it represents in Spirited Away; Spirited Away as a critique of the failures of capitalism/ allegory of modern Japan and its relationship with the 'West': [1], [2], [3]. (there's a lot of essays, I'm just shoving random ones here).
Derek is that food. Do not eat.
...Point being. I firmly believe that the derek was intentional (again, remember: a high-context culture) and that the correct moral choice is to never, EVER buy into the derek. Instead of lamenting derek not being boinkable, what you need to do — both diegetically, through your character, and not diegetically, through understanding the message — is to check yourself and Reject. The. Derek.
… Unless you aim to play as a foreign opportunist / ruthless villain who wants to destroy the reefs. Then yeah, Derek might be a good match for a character like that. Or, of course, Derek might get a redemption arc. Personally, I'd rather he didn't; would cheapen the message. But I'm just a narrative-cromching doofus from the very-very opposite side of Asia; ultimately I'm here to offer an opinion, nothing else. However, another thing I'd like to say, or more like implore: please don't westernize/americanize everything you set your eyes on, I beg of you 🙏 CI was conceived specifically so that there'd be an alternative to the all-encompassing derek.
