'Billie Eilish' Talks About Growing Up in Public Eye - Music Observer

The first person born in the 21st century to bag an Oscar is Billie Eilish.

As per the 20-year-old musician, she had impostor syndrome. Additionally, growing up in the spotlight for her was a “bruising experience.”

“I was doing an interview earlier today,” she said while pulling her hair free from two tight buns. “And I was saying that when a new person comes into my life — any sort of romantic thing — you guys are the first thing I mention. ‘Just so you know, this comes with me!”

But now, Billie is sitting with the BBC 100 Women for an interview that she will soon speak about on stage during a concert. This interview discusses her career, that’s not even a decade old.

Born as Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, the singer grew up in Los Angeles as the child of an actor and musician. Note that her parents were extras on shows like Friends and The West Wing. The “I’m a Bad Guy” singer was also homeschooled with her older brother Finneas O’Connell.

Billie Eilish and Finneas, who won an Oscar in March for co-writing “No Time to Die” from the James Bond film of the same name, were invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Tuesday (June 28) They were among 12 people invited to join the music branch and among 397 people invited to join the Academy across all branches.

An invitation to join the Academy is generally a perk of winning an Oscar. Ariana DeBose, who won best supporting actress for West Side Story, and Troy Kotsur, who won best supporting actor for CODA, were invited to join the actors branch.

I found Billie (full name: Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell - I know, right?) after randomly finding her song on Spotify, it’s called ‘my boy’ and to be honest it was like listening to fresh air mixed with indie rock, or something. Regardless, I fell down the rabbit hole that is her EP ‘don’t smile at me’, it’s just so unbelievably impressive, even more so when you learn that she started singing and writing when she was 11 years old and released her first single in 2016, ‘ocean eyes’, at age 15. The EP was released in August 2017, 11 songs that can make anyone feel everything.

From what I know, she got into music by having a musical family, her brother being the main culprit. Finneas O’Connell, he started in his own band and now writes with Billie for her music too, ‘ocean eyes’ was originally written for his band but he gave it to Billie who then sent it to her dance teacher who helped to find choreography for it (oh yeah she’s also a classically trained dancer, of course). On top of all that madness, she’s also super cool (check out her instagram for her outfits).

On the less appealing side, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Billie was asked to answer the same questions she had answered with VF a year before. The interview contained questions like ‘How many instagram followers do you have?’  (257k / 6.3 Million), ‘What is the most amount of people you’ve ever performed in front of?’ (500 ppl / 40k ppl), it then goes deeper into some heavier questions like her biggest regret or how she handles pressure. She talks about the dark side of the industry and depression. Give it a watch, I can guarantee it will make you cry.

Please remember to take care of your mental health. It’s so important because in these times it seems like we struggle to talk about the way we feel because it makes us seem weak. Bullshit.
