The Mermaid. Harald Oskar Sohlberg (1869 – 1935) was a Norwegian romantic landscape painter. He hardly ever painted human forms, which makes the sudden explosion of a mermaid into his symbolic repertoire, all the more miraculous.

Harald Oskar Sohlberg (Nov. 29, 1860 - 1935) was a neo-Romantic Norwegian artist who studied with Zahrtmann at Den kongelige Tegnesskole. Sohlberg specialized in landscapes and town vistas, often featuring churches and cemeteries, usual depicted by night.
He is well represented at Nasjonalgalleriet in Oslo, and one of his canvases, Vinternatt i Rondane, was chosen in 1995 as Norway's "National painting"
