Den Haag – De vlaggen zijn gehesen. Op woensdagavond 13 september vond de feestelijke opening van het Prinsjesfestival plaats, onderdeel van het koninklijk programma in Den Haag. Daarbij nam burgemeester Jan van Zanen het hijsen van één van de twaalf vlaggen voor zijn rekening als startschot van vele festiviteiten. Volgende week dinsdag is het Prinsjesdag. In de aanloop naar deze belangrijke dag op de kalender van Den Haag staat de hele hofstad tien dagen lang in het teken van haar koninklijke erfgoed. Sinds vorige week zijn er dagelijks rondvaarten op de Hofvijver waarbij opvarenden het Binnenhof en het Torentje van dichtbij kunnen bekijken. In een half uurtje biedt rondvaartbedrijf de Ooievaart een kijk op de 800-jarige historie van het gebouwencomplex. Buitenbios en paardenkoetsen Sinds woensdag spelen er daarnaast dagelijks films in de koninklijke buitenbioscoop bij de Waalse kerk zoals The Lion King (2019), Zwartboek, Corgi, Blue Hawaii, Alice Through the Looking Glass en de documentaire Escher – Het Oneindige Zoeken. Daphne Wray van stichting Marketing Haagse Binnenstad, die de buitenbioscoop en andere koninklijke programmering organiseert, zegt: "Je zit midden in de stad en bekijkt samen met maximaal vijftig anderen de film op een knus terras. Dat maakt het een hele bijzondere, exclusieve ervaring." Zo kunnen bezoekers Den Haag vanuit een koninklijk rijtuig ervaren. De koetsritten, verzorgd door Stalhouderij Hanemaaijer, zouden afgelopen weekend al rijden, maar dit ging niet door vanwege het tropische weer. Anneke Hanemaaijer zegt: "Gelukkig wordt het minder warm dit weekend. We starten zowel zaterdag als zondag een uur eerder en gaan een uur langer door zodat we meer ritten kunnen aanbieden. Het is erg in trek en op een aantal tijden zitten we al helemaal vol." Koninklijke activiteiten Zaterdag zijn er tal van andere koninklijke festiviteiten in de binnenstad, waaronder een modeshow, muziekoptredens, de fameuze hoedjesparade 'The Hague Hat Stroll', oefeningen van de bereden brigade op het Lange Voorhout en de gezellige PrinsjesMarkt op het schelpenpad langs de Hofvijver. Na het weekend gaan de activiteiten door met op maandagochtend 18 september de spectaculaire paardenoefeningen op het strand van Scheveningen. In de avond is vervolgens de eerste editie van het gratis muziekfestival PrinsjesNach, waarbij er op vijftien locaties in de binnenstad live muziek wordt gespeeld van allerlei genres. Prinses Alexia Op Prinsjesdag zelf, dinsdag 19 september, kunnen bezoekers de koninklijke rijtoer aanschouwen met alle pracht en praal die daarbij hoort. In de Glazen Koets zitten natuurlijk Koning Willem-Alexander en Koningin Máxima en ook Prinses Alexia, die afgelopen jaar 18 is geworden, zal meerijden in de stoet. De beste kans om daar een glimp van op te vangen is vanaf de koninklijke tribuneplaatsen, waar nog tickets voor beschikbaar zijn. In 2014, only 274 new Welsh corgi puppies were registered with the Kennel Club, a low enough number for the club to add the dog to its “vulnerable native breeds” list. Largely known for being the Queen’s dog of choice – it is said that over her lifetime she owned at least 30 – the breed did not appear to benefit from the royal association.

Then, last month, it was reported that internet searches for corgis had increased tenfold in the wake of the Queen’s death, and that puppies normally selling for £1,500 – at a push – were suddenly being offered at £6,000. In death, the monarch had conferred upon the corgi the one thing it lacked, besides proportionate legs: popularity.

At close range, this version of events becomes a little porous. Internet searches do not necessarily translate into owners, especially once the price tag becomes apparent. No doubt anyone determined to pay £6,000 for a dog can find somebody to sell them one at that price, but most of the corgi puppies for sale on the Pets4Home website are being offered at £2,000, which would seem to be a more accurate going rate.

Interest in the breed has been climbing steadily since it was removed from the Kennel Club watch list in 2018 – a change in fortunes that the club in part attributes not to the Queen, but to the Netflix drama series The Crown.

The Queen’s corgis were pembroke Welsh corgis – not to be confused with cardigan Welsh corgis, which remain on the Kennel Club’s vulnerable breeds list. “The pembroke is a leaner build,” says Kevin Egan, editor of Our Corgi World, the newsletter of the principal club for pembroke owners, The Welsh Corgi League. “They are not as high in the withers – the shoulders, in other words. Their faces are foxier, their muzzles are narrower.”

Cardigans also have brushy tails. The tails of pembrokes were traditionally docked, but some have a naturally “bobbed” tail, a more desirable trait now that docking is illegal.

While the two breeds are now categorised as “pastoral” dogs for competition purposes, both were bred as working dogs in their respective regions of Wales. “Pembroke is a cattle county, which is why the pembroke Welsh corgi was bred to basically drive cattle to market,” says Egan. “Cardigan is a sheep county, so they did pretty much the same job, but with a different kind of livestock.”

Egan has three pembrokes – Edward, 11, Barney, six, and Mungo, 20 months – and remembers what he paid for each of them: £750 in 2011; £1,200 in 2017, and £1,350 last year. He has noticed a rise in interest when he takes his dogs out for a walk, or at least in recognition. “No longer do I get asked, what kind of dog is that?” he says. “I’m getting, ‘Ah, the Queen’s dog.’”

Egan accepts the influence of television on the resurgence of the breed. “The Crown did help,” he says. “Very much so, because it was so novel and the dogs were so skilfully placed in it.” But he reckons the climb back from the brink has as much to do with the work he and others have put in, travelling to the Kennel Club’s Discover Dogs shows to drum up interest in the breed. Last year, 1,223 pembroke puppies were registered with the Kennel Club, the highest number in almost 30 years, but that is still some way off the 1960 peak, when almost 9,000 were registered. The following year, Elvis Presley co-starred with a corgi in Blue Hawaii.

Corgis were never really in danger of extinction. They have been consistently popular across Europe and especially in the US, where the American Kennel Club ranks the pembroke Welsh corgi as the 11th most popular breed. What makes this squat, big-eared working dog a desirable household pet?

“Health, intelligence and temperament are my three sort of keynotes,” says Egan. Corgis are obedient when well-trained, but their natural intelligence can make them prone to mischief. “They have the IQ of a five-year-old child, apparently,” says Egan. “If you don’t train your corgi, your corgi will train you.” As we speak on the phone, all three of Egan dogs begin to bark simultaneously because the clock has just gone four, and they know it’s feeding time.

People sometimes think of corgis as lap dogs, but according to Egan they are more appropriately called foot dogs; his like to rest their muzzles on his instep as he sits. This kind of devotion can be a little intense, amounting to constant supervision.

Welsh pembroke corgis have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years and generally enjoy good health. They do have a reputation as “nippers”, but this may be wholly down to the Queen’s dogs, as they often bit footmen and clock winders.

Egan points out that, as working dogs, Welsh corgis shepherded cattle by snapping at their back legs while being low and agile enough to avoid a kicking. They are easily trained out of this behaviour individually, but harder to manage in large numbers, and at certain points the Queen had as many as 13 dogs. “I think the nips and bites and the odd accident at court were probably a result of somebody simply stepping out of line,” says Egan, “because there was no doubt that Her Majesty was the alpha of the pack.”

After much deliberation with Natasha, you agreed to take Jeff to the vet for a regular checkup. Nothing was wrong with him; you just wanted to establish care with a doctor and make sure that Jeff was at his healthiest (although given the way he ate, you were sure the visit would go smoothly).

You and Natasha sit in the waiting room across a young couple with a corgi. Jeff is on a leash (mostly for appearances–you’ve never had a more obedient pet), and you know he hates it based on the way he scratches at his collar in annoyance. You see the couple put their heads together and whisper, throwing not-so-subtle glances at your family.

“Um, excuse me,” the man eventually says. “Sorry to bother you, but something looks awfully familiar about—”

Natasha beams. “Oh, well, that’s because we’re part of the—”

“You were on TV the other day!” the woman interrupts.

“Yes, we were,” Natasha says. “It was just a little promotional thing—”

“What’s his name?” the woman asks.

“I—Wait, what? His name?” Natasha is taken aback.

When you realize the couple is talking about Jeff, and not the two Avengers sitting across from them, you almost crack a rib trying to hold in your laughter. Natasha slumps back moodily while you fill in the couple with Jeff’s origins.

“He’s adorable. Can we take a picture of him?” the man asks.

“Absolutely. Smile, Jeff!” you say. Jeff opens his mouth and sticks his tongue out as the couple laughs and snaps several photographs of him. Natasha rolls her eyes and you put your arm around her, sensing that she is jealous of the attention Jeff is getting.

“I’ll take a picture of you later if it’ll make you feel better,” you whisper to her.

“As long as you don’t take me to the vet, too,” she mumbles.

“Deal.”

“For Jeffrey?” A large man in glasses and a white lab coat comes into the waiting room.

“That’s us! Come on, Jeff.”

Natasha follows after the veterinarian, then Jeff, then you. He brings you to a private little room. On the walls are anatomical pictures of dogs and cats. On a little cabinet with a sink sits several large jars filled with treats for different animals.

“I’m Dr. Norway,” the vet introduces, shaking yours and Natasha’s hands in turn. “And this must be Jeff!” He kneels and holds out his hand for Jeff to sniff. “I’ll be honest with you two, Jeff is not the usual kind of patient we see. In fact, I don’t think I’ve seen anything like him before.”

“We found him in Hawaii,” you say. “I call him a land shark, because he’s basically just a shark with legs that can survive on land. He does just as well underwater, too. And he acts just like a dog.”

“Amazing. We’re happy to have you here. What brings you and Jeff in today?” Dr. Norway asks.

“Just a checkup. We want to make sure he’s healthy and is up to date on all his vaccinations,” you say.

“Perfect, we can arrange for that today.” Dr. Norway rubs his hands together. “Let’s start by weighing him.”

You lead Jeff to stand on the table that doubles as a scale. He climbs onto it and sits patiently while it measures his weight.

“Thirty-two pounds exactly.” Dr. Norway presses his large hands around Jeff’s body and feels various areas. “I’m not sure what the average weight of his species is, but he looks and feels healthy. How are his eating habits?”

“He’ll eat anything that fits in his mouth,” Natasha sighs, recalling the time she had to pull an entire potted plant out of his mouth when you told him he needed to start eating more vegetables.

“Little chowhound, huh?” Dr. Norway presses a button on the wall and the table lifts to waist height so he can get a better look at Jeff. “Okay, let’s take his temperature next—”

“Oh, um…How are you going to do that?” you ask.

“The same way we do to all the animals.” Dr. Norway snaps on a pair of gloves and takes out the thermometer from the cabinet drawer. “Now, if I could just have the parents stay by his head and distract him…”

“Who’s a good little land shark?” You stand in front of Jeff and pet his head. Natasha strokes his fin, while Dr. Norway goes behind Jeff and lifts his tail.

Jeff frowns when he feels Dr. Norway grab him and tries to look.

“It’s okay, Jeff. It’ll be over soon—” you say.

“MRRRRRRR!” Jeff screams, his eyes going wide when Dr. Norway pokes his butt. He thrashes violently, slamming his head into your chin. You feel like you’ve received an uppercut from Steve Rogers and your vision blurs.

“Oof!” You release Jeff and stagger away from the table. Natasha tries catching your arm to keep you upright, but instead has to grab Jeff before he can close his mouth on Dr. Norway’s hand.

“Easy, easy!” Dr. Norway backs up.

“Relax, Jeff,” Natasha soothes, trying to calm the little shark. But Jeff is on the verge of a tantrum, aggressively trying to pull away from Natasha and snarling. He doesn’t want to be here, and he’s upset you brought him to a place that would hurt him like this.

“Let me go get my assistant.” Dr. Norway darts out of the room.

“Are you okay, Y/N?” Natasha asks.

“Y-Yeah,” you say, blinking dark spots out of your vision. “Jeff, you almost knocked me out!”

Jeff huffs in annoyance.

“You still think this is going to be fun?” Natasha says. Jeff shivers on the table, glaring at both you and Natasha. You feel terrible, but know that this visit is necessary for his health.

“I’m sorry, Jeff. It’ll be over soon,” you say, but Jeff turns his head away from you.

Dr. Norway brings in an assistant, a sturdy young man, to help. Even with three of you holding Jeff down, the land shark demonstrates more strength than all of you combined. He bucks and growls, his jaws snapping dangerously close to human limbs.

After another minute of no success, Natasha turns to Dr. Norway. “Do you… Do you have a muzzle?” she asks, sharing your fear that Jeff might accidentally bite someone. You’ve seen the multiple rows of teeth he has, and even if it isn’t intentional, he could do some serious damage with them.

“We do, but they’re shaped for dogs,” Dr. Norway says.

Natasha thinks for a moment. “Do you have any duct tape?”

You’ve never seen Jeff look so angry before, but you can’t really blame him. Dr. Norway’s assistant found a roll of duct tape and wrapped it around Jeff’s snout the way you’d seen done to alligators. It’s now impossible for him to open his mouth, which gives you comfort that he won’t bite anyone, but you hate that it’s such a miserable experience for him.

Fortunately, Dr. Norway is quick and finally gets a reading of Jeff’s temperature, but the trauma doesn’t stop there. They keep the “muzzle” on while Dr. Norway administers several vaccinations. Jeff whimpers in your arms and Natasha strokes his head gently, promising that it will be over soon.

“All done!” Dr. Norway announces.

You carefully peel the tape off Jeff’s snout, but he doesn’t even look at you. You leave Natasha to deal with the bill while you take Jeff out to the car, sitting in the backseat with him. He refuses to sit on your lap and huddles in the corner, shivering.

“Jeff. Hey, buddy. Please don’t be mad at us.” You reach over and pat his back leg. He grumbles and curls up into a ball. Your heart hurts seeing your little land shark so distressed. “I’m sorry we had to take you to the vet,” you apologize. “But we had to make sure you were healthy and got all your shots.”

Jeff squeezes his eyes shut and sighs.

Natasha finally comes out of the vet’s office and gets in the driver’s seat.

“How is he doing?” she asks, looking at you in the rearview mirror.

“He won’t even look at me,” you say in a small voice, devastated at being rejected by your pet. “Hey, Jeff. If we got you ice cream, would that make you feel better?” you ask.

He perks up, lifting his head to look at you.

“Yeah? You want to stop for ice cream?”

He nods and slowly uncurls himself.

You lean forward to tap Natasha on the shoulder. “Can we stop for ice cream, Nat?”

Natasha doesn’t want to make another stop, but after seeing the pitiful land shark in her backseat, she relents. “Okay. But you’re paying, because that vet bill ate up my credit card. I’m pretty sure they just charged us extra because he’s a shark…”

You stop at a little ice cream parlor. You carry Jeff to counter level so he can see the flavors and let him pick two different ones. An employee scoops them into a cup, while you get a cone and Natasha gets a milkshake. The three of you sit at a table outside, Jeff underneath, sticking his entire snout in the cup and devouring his ice cream in gigantic gulps.

He finishes before you’ve even taken three bites, and stares at you with puppy-dog eyes while you try to finish.

“No, Jeff you already finished your ice cream,” you say, pushing him away when he butts his head against your leg. “This is mine.”

Eventually, you give in and share the last scoop of your ice cream with him. Natasha smiles and pushes her milkshake across the table to share with you.

“See? Going to the vet’s isn’t too bad, right?” you ask, letting him eat the rest of your cone.

But Jeff shakes his head in disagreement. He never wants to go back there again, even if it means getting ice cream.
