MY TOUGHTS ON PART ONE OF RED HOOD BY CHIP ZDARSKY :)

Finally I have read part one of the Red Hood story in Batman: Urban Legends!

This story is very interesting, we start with the Red Hood looking for the people who are providing Gotham with a new drug. This drug “Cheerdrops” has been passed around for weeks at this point and it has had devastating results among it's users. If you know Jason you understand that drugs are a big issue for him and one that he treats very carefully and seriously.

As he interrogates people he arrives to the building where one of the dealers of this drug is supposed to be, there he finds a horrific scene, a boy is desperately trying to wake up his mother who appears to have overdosed in her bed. Jason is quick to call an ambulance and get in contact with Oracle in order to find the boy's father who is (as he finds out later) the man that he was looking for.

Jason sees this scene and can't help but compare it to the time he went through this situation with his mom all those years ago, so he takes the boy with him so he can take him to his father, who Jason is hoping is a good man that had to sell drugs in order to help his family.

That's basically the premise of this first part of the story but now i will write about my thoughts on the specifics of the story.

The story begins with Jason giving a speech about fear and how it's used,

"Fear. Its a tool, it's his tool. I never really adopted it, maybe because he kept that fear all to himself." Then he continues with "Never had to rely on it, had to work harder to take out the bad guys, had to be...more direct." he finishes that thought with "Rubber Bullets. So that fear doesn't get turned around on me."

I for one really liked this Fear speech, it does really sum up what the Batman does, he relies on the Fear that he imposes on Gotham's criminals and such while Robin on the other hand was never meant to work with fear, which is true.

It did remind me of the speech that Alfred gave in issue #10 of Under the Red Hood about how Batman works with fear and Jason had some thoughts on it, here is some of it,

"Master Jason had a condescending practice of referring to the costumed criminals elements as 'dress ups'. He also noted that such individuals did not fear the Batman the way street thugs and mafioso did. The 'dress ups' did not believe he was a monster." "...the boy did say something to me that chilled me to the bone...even then. 'They all know he won't kill them.'"

Anyway let's go back to the actual comic I am talking about...

Jason speaks from his position as Red Hood in current time and says that he uses rubber bullets in order to keep the Bat at bay, the fear that the Bat uses against other criminals cannot be used against him if he plays within the Bat's rules.

As he was doing that he was actually trying to get info about who is making the drug but all he was able to get was who was selling it to the person he was interrogating. This drug is dangerous and Jason has to work fast.

Here is where we see the first flashback scene, we see Jason in the cave before he was able to go out as Robin and he is not to happy about it. The art is very beautiful but sadly in these panels i found my first problem with the context of Jason becoming Robin and how Zdarsky seems to set Jason's feelings on the first Robin.

It seems that Zdarsky is going for the “Jason believed Dick was the perfect Robin and no matter what he did he would never be as good as him” route, which fine ok, that's your right but, is it really necessary? I must admit i am a little tired of this particular thing because i adore the fact that when Dick and Jason first met they were fine with one another (even if a little wary at the very start). And the whole competitive and “i will never be as good as X person” is really tiring in the Robin/Batfamily fandom.

That problem is not as significant as the next one though.

Jason not thinking that Robin was “badass”. Well this is not only a bad take but it's completely OOC for Jason, no matter how you see it. From his first appearance as Robin to the flashbacks in Winick's UtRH and even through both of Lobdell's runs Jason has always loved the concept and the mantle of Robin as a child.

Batman v1, #385.

So that whole take is wrong, i don't like it and also who on this or any universe would rather call themselves Batboy? Honestly i hope this is never brought up again or i will cry. ((((Also in this house Robin will always be the name that Mary gave Dick and then he used as his hero name so it hurts a lot more))))

Also at the end of this first flashback Jason discovers a room full of firearms and is obviously surprised because Batman hates those so he asks why he has them, B responds that he has to understand how they work for his detective work, but that's not all he says, he also says this “...Guns are a coward's weapon, and we will not be cowards.”

Alright Mr. Zdarsky i see the irony... i also see the Daredevil / Punisher thingie right there.

Anyway we are now back to the present where we see Batman seeing the effects of the drug in one of its victims, after saving that person he takes some samples of the drug. We also get to see two police officers with different views on the “masks”, that's a nice way to set the story after the Joker War and before the Magistrate.

Back to Jason, he seems to be struggling, he can't find the people making/providing the drugs in Gotham and is also doubting his skills, he tells a man that if the information that he gave him is incorrect he “will find him” followed with another internal speech full of self doubt, “...sure thing Red Hood, right now you can't even find a street drug. Half of Gotham's teenagers could find it no problem. You never were the best detective.”

Alright, so Jason feels insecure about his skills now? First you have pre-Robin Jason not feeling like he could be able to keep up with the first Robin and now, Jason as a grown man has doubts about the skills that he has used for a long while now? I mean, press X for DOUBT because UtRH showed us how much of a badass and extremely skilled he is. This man planed everything in order to turn the Bat's world upside down (and this story has references to UtRH so it definitely happened) and now he feels like he is not that good?

Shit. i know where this is going, first the insecurities that he has already worked out... I can see it coming, the next big thing will be Daddy issues. Wonderful i hate it and i hope i am wrong because those “issues” are more than resolved, i know that's the only trope DC throws at Jason but honestly how different will it be this time?

Fine, lets move on. Jason finds himself in one of the apartments and what he sees is horrifying. Lying on a bed there is a woman completely catatonic with a horrible smile on her face and right next to her a terrified little boy.

Here is the best take on Jason's character so far.

Realizing that the child is scared of the situation and the masked man that just came into his home Jason takes off his mask and reassures the kid that he is there to help, it's quickly made obvious that the woman has overdosed on Cheerdrops, he makes sure to call an ambulance for her stating that she seems to be in a drug-related coma.

Its important to note that Jason is doing this as he is having troubling thoughts about how much this scene reminds him of the time he was in this little boy's (Tyler) shoes. Its hard for him but he soon realizes that he needs to make sure Tyler is safe.

He asks Tyler if he has another parent, he does and his name is Andy, after taking a look around the house Jason deduces that maybe the father is also taking drugs so if the police comes they will surely take Tyler and put him in the system, this idea is not one Jason is fond of so he calls Oracle, he asks if she can locate Tyler's dad's phone, when she asks about the kid Jason says that he will be the one keeping him safe.

Now we find ourselves back with Batman where he is investigating the components of Cheerdrops, he finds out that the drug is a modified version of Scarecrow's fear gas that gives the victim a sense of extreme happiness instead of fear.

Here we get confirmation of when in the timeline this story occurs, which is after the events of Infinite Frontier (where there was an attack on Arkham and many patients/prisoners were killed or escaped).

B suggests to Oracle that maybe Crane didn't die there and that he might be behind this drug, he will be on the job right away! To this Oracle is like well shit, so she tells B that Jason is also working this case...and here comes a funny yet confusing interaction.

Barbara says “I know you two aren't exactly friends right now but...” before she finishes Batman interrupts her by saying “He is a killer Barbara. I will do this alone.”

OH BOY is this interaction confusing! First of all may i point out how different this conversation is from the one in Three Jokers where the roles were basically reversed??? Please tell me that i am not the only one who finds that funny! Anyway that story doesn't matter here, but Red Hood Outlaw from Rebirth does, right?

Here is the thing, the last person that Jason “killed” in rebirth was Penguin and he actually didn't do it, he had him trapped in a panic room in his own Casino. Batman already beat the living shit out of Jason in RHatO #25 for it...and some time has passed, B surely found out that Jason didn't kill Penguin by now, i mean isn't he like the best detective to ever detective in the history of the universe??

Not only that but Jason has been using rubber bullets for a while and even at the start he mentions that, he basically implies that he is playing by the Bat's rules to keep him off his back. Maybe B hasn't let go of the duffel bag full of heads or any of the shitty people Jason killed during UtRH??? If B still holds that against Jason then why would he try to make Jason part of his Bat clan at the beginning of RHatO Rebirth?

Maybe he still thinks that Jason killed the penguin...but even then isn't B working with Harley and Ghost-Maker? You know, people who have killed? Why is Jason different? Did Jason kill someone recently that we don't know about? Jason only kills a very distinct set of people (that are very not nice) so i guess i don't see the logic...

Anyway second flashback, and this time we have a look at what was going on in the Batcave with B and Alfred during the events of UtRH! Nothing that wasn't explored in UtRH is said here but we do see Alfred explicitly telling Bruce how much they failed Jason. There is a heavy insinuation that the fact that Batman keeps sending the Joker to Arkham only for him to escape and kill more people actually makes B responsible for those deaths and i love that. Thank you.

Back to Jason and Tyler we get to see some very adorable scenes between the two. Jason gives the lower half of his mask to Tyler to protect his identity like a superhero and we have a really sweet moment in which Tyler chooses the Blue Hood as his name because he likes the colour blue (same Tyler).

After he leaves Tyler in a place where he will be safe he goes to the building where Andy should be and let me tell you the more Jason sees the less hopeful he becomes about Andy being just one of the people selling the drug... He does some shooting and incapacitating and then follows the man that is trying to escape and here is when shit hits the fan.

Andy is a disgusting human being. He hates Tyler's mother and doesn't care that she might be dead and the piece of shit hates his son so much that he gave a barely 10 year old drugs.

Yeah. BANG BANG BANG MOTHERFUKER.

If you think that this leads to Jason being a little more like his UtRH self, you know the guy that said that people who gave drugs to kids will get killed without a thought...yeah that's not happening, here comes the guilt!

I get it he just killed a man, but, did you read what that man said?

Anyway that's how the first part of this story ends.

The story is good. it has things that don't make much sense but i think it's because Zdarsky is a Batman fan and not a Red Hood fan in the sense that he doesnt know much about Jason's character and that this is his first ever DC work.

I cant wait to see where this story goes, while i hope “unresolved daddy issues” doesn't become a theme yet again in a Red Hood story i believe it's where we are headed. I will keep on reading because i am invested in Jason and Tyler's relationship and what is going to happen now that Jason killed Andy.

Summary: With the threat of an airborne drug, the Batfamily has to fight against the clock to contain it.Or, I found a plot hole in a previous fic and decided to write 5k of words to remedy that, but instead created much, much more plot holes.

A/N: In Flameo, Batman! I wrote about how Oracle can only narrow possible locations to 5, which means that the kidnappers are actually good, but then I didn't deliver on the fight scene. So I decided to write this, and ends up with 5k of the batfam actually being detectives. This is written almost in a S.W.A.T. like style, because my dad is obsessed with that show and so I watch it too.title from Hozier, Angel of Small Death and the Codein Scene. I thought it's fitting, since this fic is about drugs. (This is Chapter 1, btw.)

“Hey, Red, is it important? I’m kind of in the middle of a stakeout.” As he says that, Dick sees movement from inside the house. He really cannot keep talking to Tim, not if he wants to get as much information from this stakeout as possible. But Tim rarely calls in the middle of patrol, so Dick is assuming that this is important.

“Oh. Not really. I just want to give you a heads-up about B’s kidnapping a few weeks ago. Turns out there’s more to it than just the kidnapping.”

Dick curses under his breath. He knows that that rescue attempt was too easy for an organization that managed to fool Oracle. “Okay. Do you need me there? I can wrap this up in a few minutes if you need me.”

“Nah, I think between Hood, BB, Batgirl, me, Robin, and Batman, we pretty much got it covered. Just keeping you in the loop.”

“Alright, Red.” If Tim says they can handle it, then they can handle it. Besides, Dick has his own cases to work through. “Thanks for the info. Call if you need help?”

“You’re welcome, N. And sure, I’ll call if we need help.”

“Nightwing! Get your ass here now!”

“Hood? Is something wrong?” It’s been a few days after Tim calls about Bruce’s kidnapping, but since there were no other calls about that, Dick assumes that they are handling it.

“Oracle’ll brief you on the way, she’s currently tied up in something else. Just get your ass here now,” Jason practically shouts to the comm.

“Is this about the kidnapping case?” Dick asks, just to be sure.

“Just get your ass here, Dickwing! We need you here yesterday!”

“Shit, is it that serious?” Dick grabs the keys to his bike from the table. It’s lucky that he’s staying in today, working on connecting leads to the murder case on Young Street. If he’s out on patrol, it would take much longer to get to the bike.

“Oracle’ll give you the full briefing in a couple minutes. I’m also currently in the middle of something…”

Two explosions, one after the other, come in from Jason’s end. It was loud enough to be heard over the comms.

“Hood, are those gunshots?”

“Like I said, I’m currently in the middle of something. Just go to Gotham, we’ll meet you at the Cave.”

“Be careful, Hood.”

“Yeah, yeah, see you there, ‘Wing.”

“Yeah.” Tim shrugs. “Their original plan was to distract us, GCPD, and basically the entire city with Bruce Wayne’s kidnapping. We found broadcasting equipment in the warehouse B was held in. But we rescued B fast enough that they couldn’t really use his kidnapping as a distraction, so now they have to find a new distraction.”

“And their new distraction is to blow up the bridge? Haven’t we been through this before?” Dick remembers another case that he works with Tim that involves blowing up the bridge. He is not looking forward to repeating that.

Tim grimaces. “You have to admit, blowing up the bridge is a pretty big distraction.”

It is a big distraction. Not that Dick is going to admit that now. “How do we know this again? And how did we miss that they are part of a larger group?” Dick turns to Babs, who hasn’t stopped typing into the Batcomputer since he got here.

“Since I am very rarely wrong, I found it suspicious that I found five hits to the possible location of B’s kidnapping, considering how easy you took them out.” That was Dick’s thought too, but he didn’t actually stick around long enough in Gotham after they ‘rescued’ Bruce that he got to say that to anyone. He could blame his abundance of cases in Blud, but he really should have said something. Thank god Babs also finds that odd. “I sent Steph to investigate the four ‘not-it’ warehouses. She found traces of this drug there. It’s a more potent version of fentanyl, almost up there with carfentanil. It has a similar composition to the bloodwork from an OD case a few months ago.”

“We thought it was just a guy experimenting with fentanyl and accidentally OD-ed himself, so we didn’t dig too much into it then,” Tim explains.

“I’m guessing that is not the case here.”

“No.” Tim sighs. “That guy was actually part of the group that kidnapped Bruce. He either stole some for himself and misjudged the dosage, or he was the guinea pig for this drug. We have no time to investigate his death now, not with this new drug threatening to spill on the streets tonight.”

“Tonight? What are they planning?” Dick came to Gotham prepared for any situation, so this information that he is going to have to act sooner rather than later comes as a confirmation rather than information, really. He’s been preparing himself for it as soon as Jason called him. But still, it would have been nice to have been called for something that’s not as immediate as tonight once in a while.

“They’re going to release this drug to the air. They have an airbender, which makes it so much easier for them,” Babs says. Airbender plus airborne drugs equals very bad news, especially with drugs as potent as carfentanil. It can cause hundreds of OD cases throughout the entire city. Is Gotham not already crazy enough for these people? “We think that they want to get the entire city hooked on this drug, then sell it to them at a very high price.”

“Damn. Tonight, you say? Is there why it’s only the three of us here?”

“Yeah. B’s with Cass and Damian coordinating with the GCPD on containment and evacuation.” Tim points to three dots, designated Batman, Robin, and Black Bat, on the GCPD building up on the map.

“Smart. Cass and Damian may be the only ones capable of containing this kind of scenario.”

“Steph and Jason are out on the docks, trying to scare some of the goons to giving up their boss’ location.” Tim points to another two dots. These two are actually moving pretty fast. Dick assumes that the two of them are chasing some goons.

“Wait,” Dick frowns, “we still don’t know their location?” That can’t be good.

“We figured out the locations of some of the caches they put to be released to the air, but we can’t guarantee that that’s all of them. And, considering the sizes of the warehouses that were used to store the drugs and the caches we’ve found, there’s still a significant amount of drugs missing. Those must be with the boss,” Babs says.

“Which is why I’m here with Babs, trying to track them down. Also, it seemed that this drug is flammable, so I thought it’s prudent to stay out of the field.”

Tim actually has remarkably good control over his fire and he can fight just fine without his bending, all of them could, but Dick currently does not have time to debate that. He files it in his mental note for a later date. “Okay, what do you need me to do?”

Babs and Tim look at each other. “A third pair of eyes won’t hurt,” Tim says.

“Don’t you think it’s better for him to be out on the streets? Hood and Batgirl haven't checked in yet, they might be in trouble.”

Right as Babs finished that sentence, the Cave’s speaker turns on. “Hood to the Cave, Hood to the Cave.”

“Speak of the devil,” Babs says.

Dick presses the mike button on the cave, then says, “Come in, Hood.”

“Oh, good, you’re here, ‘Wing. O, Red, we got several locations, but they’re all contradicting each other. I don’t know how useful this is going to be.”

“Any additional data is going to be useful, Hood. Where is it?” Babs opens a new window on the Batcomputer, ready to type in and analyze everything Jason is going to say.

“One said that he’s on Crime Alley, 31st Street. Another one said he’s camping near Arkham, just a few blocks from it. One said he’s on the grounds of Gotham U.”

“Fuck him very much for that, by the way. Who tries to release drugs on university grounds? Haven’t college students suffered enough?”

“Focus, Batgirl.”

“Right. Some of them said he’s on Robinsville, but some also said he’s on the Bowery, King’s Street. For all it’s worth, all of them seemed very sure about their answers, and they’re all also confused about why their fellow henchmen are giving out different answers.”

“How sure are they?” Tim asks.

“Sure enough that the firebenders are willing to get iced,” Jason says grimly.

“Damn.”

“Yep.”

“How come this guy is in five places at once?” Babs frowns at the screen. “Maybe these are just decoys?”

“No, I don’t think so, Babs. For a firebender to be willing to get iced, they must be super sure of themselves. Even I don’t want to get iced.” Tim shivers. Dick knows for a fact that Steph has once iced Tim, so Tim is speaking from memory at that one. Dick has been iced before too, but the experience is totally different for a firebender, what with their source of power being the fire inside and all. “Oh, that reminds me. Hood, please tell me you didn’t actually ice them.”

“Nah, Replacement.” Tim sighs in relief. “Blondie here did.”

“What!” Tim exclaims.

“Shut up, Hood! I can and will ice you too!”

“Try it, Blondie. I’m a waterbender too, remember?”

“Children, focus,” Babs says. “Let’s assume that this guy is in five places at once. How is he doing that? Meta powers? Spirit world connection? If he has a spirit world connection this case might just turn out to be worse than it already is.”

“Wait,” Dick says, tracing the five places Babs has highlighted on the map. “What if he’s not in five places at once?”

“Are we not acting on the assumption that the henchmen are giving accurate information?” Babs looks at him.

“It can be accurate without him being in five places at once, Babs. What if he’s just moving between these places so fast that when they check in to see where he is, they all get different answers?”

“Huh. That is certainly more plausible. But the speed in which he must have moved suggests that…”

“He’s an airbender. Only airbenders can move that fast. It tracks, though. We already know they have an airbender to release the drug. That airbender is just the boss.”

“If he’s the airbender, he can make sure that he inhaled none of the drugs himself. Oh!” Babs claps her hands. “That’s genius, Former Boy Wonder!”

“Hey, I’m a former boy wonder too!” Jason cries out.

“Same here!”

“I literally had the longest run as Robin, after N here,” Tim adds.

Babs sighs. “You guys really are children, aren’t you? Someone not me please tell Batman about this. I’m going to run an analysis on airbenders outside the League who’s in Gotham right now. There shouldn’t be too many of them.”

“Speaking of the League,” Dick turns to Tim, “are we sure it’s not them?”

“I don’t think so, ‘Wing. This is not their MO.”

“Yeah. Besides, neither Talia nor Ra’s have any interest in these kinds of drugs. I don’t think it’s them.”

If both Tim and Jason, their current resident expert on the League, say that it’s not the League, then Dick is inclined to believe them. They have spent a considerable amount of time with the League to not pick up on their tendencies. “Okay. Let’s rule out the League for now. Any hits yet, Babs?”

“No. There are still quite a few airbenders around, even discounting the League, you know?”

Dick nods. Even though most of the airbenders are present in the League, there are still several groups outside of the League who have their own airbenders. Not to mention the occasional airbenders who’re not affiliated with any of the groups but still managed to master their craft.

Then, the Cave is bathed in red light, with alarms sounding from all the speakers in the Cave.

Dick curses. “What’s that, Red?”

“It’s Bruce’s alarm. Whoever he is, he’s making his move now.”

“Alright, Hood, Batgirl, head over to B’s location now. I’m also moving out right now. Red, you coming?”

“No, I’ll look into containment options other than airbending from here. I’m not risking a city wide fire.”

Dick nods. He really needs to have that conversation with Tim about why he doesn’t want to go out to the field today, but that unfortunately has to wait. “Oracle, keep us posted. B’s in GCPD headquarters, yes?”

“That’s what his last location is. His tracker is down.”

“What about Robin’s? Or Black Bat’s?” Dick asks.

“They’re still at GCPD.”

“Okay. I’m heading to GCPD now. Hood, Batgirl?”

“Already on our way, ‘Wing!” Steph says.

“Good.” Dick mounts his bike and zooms out of the Cave door that either Tim or Babs must have opened for him. He tries to hail Bruce on the way to GCPD. “Nightwing to Batman, Nightwing to Batman, come in.”

Silence.

Dick tries again. “Nightwing to Batman, Nightwing to Batman, come in!”

The same as before, silence. The fact that both Batman’s tracker and his comm are down is very concerning, especially at nights like this, when Bruce knows he has to communicate with the entire family.

“Shit. Oracle, Batman’s not answering. When did his tracker go down?”

“His tracker went down right before he pinged the Cave,” Babs says. “Try hailing Robin. I’ll hail Black Bat. Maybe they know where Batman went.”

“‘Kay, O. Nightwing to Robin, Nightwing to Robin.”

Static. At least it’s not silence, which meant that Robin still has his comms, he just can’t reach it to answer. That’s marginally better. Still not reassuring, though.

“Oracle, I’m getting static from Robin’s com.”

“I’m getting the same thing from Black Bat’s com. Maybe they are in the middle of containing the drugs? That would make them unable to answer the coms.”

Dick wills his bike to go even faster, even as he’s already riding at breakneck speed. “Maybe, O. Let’s hope it’s not something worse.”

The air was hot and heavy as I walked into the garage, contrasting with the cool breeze from outside. I spotted the man I was looking for and walked towards him.

“Hey, Aurelio” I greeted him, causing him to turn around to me.

“Elizabeth!” He grinned at the sight of me, but it vanished when I got closer. “Shit, what happened to you?”

“The usual” I muttered, letting him hold my chin up to analyze the damage.

“Fuck, you look terrible”

“Thanks, now will you forget about it?”

“Want me to get someone for you?”

“Just please, forget about it”

“Fine… What brings you here, love?”

“Watch it” I told him half-jokingly, knowing how much he liked to tease me. “How’s my baby?”

“Well, that bike was pretty fucked up when you brought it” He motioned for me to follow him further into the car garage. “Art takes time”

“It’s not art, it’s a repair” I chuckled, already excited when I saw my motorbike right there. "Besides, it’s not my fault that those dicks rammed into it”

“I think I don’t actually want to know what happened”

“That’s right, you don’t”

“Anyway, I still need more time. You still have the car I lent you, right?”

“Yup”

“That’ll have to do for now”

“Hey, are you busy? I need to talk about something”

“Sure thing” He walked to a small table and invited me to sit down, so I did. “Want something to drink?”

I laughed a little even if his words made me roll my eyes. No matter how many times he asked, he didn’t get tired of his little joke.

“No, Aurelio” I punched him in the arm as he sat down in the seat across from me. “I don’t want a drink”

“So what’s up?”

“I need info”

“About what”

“About… John Wick”

The smirk immediately erased from his lips at the mention of that name. He paused, frowning, and sat up straight in the chair. Then he licked his lips before he spoke again.

“Why?” He eyed me cautiously, with a new darkness in his expression.

“I need to kill him” I cringed at how stupid that sentence sounded.

“Do you have a fucking death wish, Elizabeth?!” Aurelio shouted, nearly standing from his seat in outrage.

“No, I have no choice!” I threw my arms up in the air in exasperation.

Aurelio vehemently shook his head as he muttered something under his breath. I blankly watched him when he slammed his hand against the table in frustration.

After a brief pause in which he mouthed what clearly were swearwords, he made eye contact with me. He bore a serious expression I hardly ever got to see in them.

“I can tell you about him” He heaved a vexed sigh. “But it’s your funeral…”

“Just… tell me” I gulped, but acquired a calm expression nonetheless. “That’s all I ask”

Aurelio paused to gather his thoughts, dedicating me a grave glance. Like I needed a reminder of how much of a bad idea it was…

“Well, he’s known as the Boogeyman” My friend began, but I held a hand up to shush him.

“Yeah, yeah, I know” I closed my hand into a fist and made a stabbing motion in the air. “And he killed three people in a bar with a fucking pencil, I’m aware”

“That’s right”

“Can’t you tell me something useful?”

“Let me think…” Annoyingly slowly, he tapped a finger against his chin, without a doubt to wind me up. “He’s going to kill you”

I tiredly glared at him, trying to convey how I was not in the mood at all. Aurelio rolled his eyes and crossed his hands over the table.

“Did you hear about his wife?”

“Not really” I had heard a lot of things about John Wick, but they usually belonged to the legend side of him. I knew zero information about the man other than his name.

“She died, like not that long ago” Aurelio sighed once more, this time sadly. “And some Russian brat stole his car and killed his dog”

“I guess that guy is dead now”

“You guess right”

I passed a hand through my hair to hide the shiver that took over my spine just imagining myself in that guy’s shoes. Sneaking a quick glance at the tattoo on the inside of my arm, I reminded myself that if for some miracle I managed to accomplish the deed, people would respect the person who could outwit John Wick. It was all part of my stupid optimistic attitude to try and deceive myself, but still. He was just a man after all.

“You really have to be in some deep shit to even be considering this” Aurelio’s voice got me out of my thoughts.

Honestly, I had no idea what my options were. Live this torture in which Gaige’s goons kept pestering me, try to kill the scariest man I had ever heard of or… I don’t know, fucking change my name and escape to Guatemala.

“Wish I could, Lisa” My friend’s hand suddenly falling on my shoulder made me jump a bit. “But I can’t help you go after him”

“I get it” I sighed, standing up from the chair.

“Good luck, pal” He went to hug me, energetically patting my back.

“Thanks…” I cut the hug short, knowing what his words truly meant.

Before he could say anything else, I turned around to avoid any awkward conversations. I just left the garage with an empty feeling, since my visit was useless.

No one could help me; everyone else would be just as scared to be the possible culprit of John Wick’s demise. Especially since it was likely that my attempt would be unsuccessful and would only earn his contempt and desire for revenge. I wouldn’t root for myself either if I were them.

The first time I saw John Wick in person was outside the Continental. I watched him for days, trying to learn about his routine, habits and movements. Just anything that would prove useful to bring him down.

Like all the days before that, I was sitting inside the car just outside the hotel. I shook my head and laughed at the absurdity of it all. As soon as he’d sense danger, I would be dead. It would be that fast. My mind went through all the worst case scenarios, imagining all the different tools he could use to neutralize the threat.

I slapped my hands against the steering wheel, trying to remind myself that none of that would happen. Not if I stayed away from him. It was cowardly, but I had a chance from a distance. I had a plan.

There he was. As soon as I spotted him, I hurriedly left the car.

John Wick exited the building, wearing a suit with a black shirt and tie. It matched with my all black outfit, which would hopefully blend into the darkness of the night.

I mentally went through his usual itinerary. He was supposed to go get his car, which he always parked in the proximity of the hotel. Not too close but not too far.

As he passed by, his eyes landed on me as I casually leaned on my car. I froze, but decided to look back at him to avoid arising any suspicion. He didn’t even speak; he only nodded his head at me as a greeting. I reciprocated the gesture, figuring he recognized my face from when I seldom stayed at the lobby to keep an eye on him.

Pretending I was sheltering myself from the cold, I put my hood on and waited for him to continue walking. Once he was far away enough to follow him but not to lose him, I started walking.

I gulped as my boots rhythmically hit the ground. Every step seemed to match up with my heart beat as both paces quickened. As I walked, I rested my hand in the small pouch that tightly wrapped around my thigh. My fingers trembled as they silently opened the bag and landed on the gun.

My eyes never left him as he advanced through an alleyway. I gasped, however, when he turned around and I got a better look at him. His hair was combed back, allowing me a full view of his dark brown eyes. That sight alone chilled me to the bone, recognizing the disappointment, anger and fierceness in them.

Aware of my obvious intentions, he lunged at me. I panicked and took ahold of the gun, wielding it with both hands and pointing it at him. That didn’t stop him at all.

He was a mere two meters away from me already, and I was sure he would kill me as soon as he laid his hands on me. At least I was smart enough to ambush him before he could make it to the car and get his weapons.

A scream got stuck in my throat as I pulled the trigger, causing him to stop dead in his tracks. The tranquilizer dart protruded from his neck, and he lifted his hands to touch it in confusion.

Improvising since I wasn’t supposed to be discovered, I tried to reach out to the actual gun hidden in my belt, covered by the length of the hoodie I was wearing. But John Wick had resumed walking, adamant on unleashing his fury on me.

My brain sent the order to my legs to move, to dodge whatever attack he was going to lead with. But I froze, because John Wick was about to kill me and I was paralyzed.

Time seemed to slow down as he lunged toward me. I noticed the dart stuck in his neck and I was impressed at how he was still standing, considering the huge dose the tranquilizer had. He grunted in anger as he tackled me to the ground, eliciting a groan to escape my lips as my back received the hard impact against the floor.

My instinct kicked in just as his hands wrapped around my throat and he began choking me. Before I could start feeling the lack of oxygen to my lungs, I quickly moved my legs so my thighs wrapped around his neck and squeezed as much as I could.

He grimaced, but didn’t release the pressure around my neck. The edges of my vision were becoming dark, so I shifted my posture to be able to squeeze his neck harder. It still didn’t stop him, and I was starting to feel drowsy from the lack of air.

I analyzed his expression, slightly proud at the fact that his face was turning red from the asphyxiation as well. But the dangerous look in his eyes, dripping unadulterated bloodlust, caused me to avert my gaze.

In a desperate attempt to free myself from his choke hold, I slammed my arm against his wrists. The first time it didn’t work, so I did it repeatedly and he still didn’t budge.

I gasped for breath and squirmed underneath him, but he was relentless. A part of me wanted to try and apologize, like that could somehow quench his desire for vengeance after I had tried to kill him. Him... John Wick.

Just when I thought I was about to pass out and die, his grip softened. I took a deep breath immediately, trying to fill my lungs with oxygen, only to be received with a violent coughing fit instead.

I released him from my own chokehold, allowing him to separate himself from me. My hand flew to my throat, still feeling the ghost of his strong hands as I massaged the sore spot.

John Wick stumbled backwards, clumsily feeling about trying to grasp the dart in his neck until he managed to pull it out. But the damage was done the moment it pierced his skin, and the sedative was now circulating through his body without remedy.

I didn’t move as I still lied there on the ground, breathing heavily and cautiously watching him. He started breathing heavily too, gritting his teeth.

Daring to sit up slightly, I waited to see what he did next. Much to my surprise, John Wick let out a shaky breath as his eyes rolled back into his skull and he collapsed face first onto the ground.

“No way…” I uttered, composing myself and slowly standing to my feet.

My entire body was trembling as I towered over him and stared at his unconscious form for several seconds. He lied face down, completely motionless except for the subtle movement of his breathing.

“Holy shit, I did it!” I breathed out, watching him in awe. Granted, I hadn’t actually finished the job. But I was proud that I had managed to survive an encounter with John Wick.

Now for the hard part.

I was still breathing heavily as I reached out for my handgun. Trying to ignore my arrhythmia, I cocked the gun and pointed it at his head. My index finger shook as it hovered over the trigger. Rolling my shoulders to calm myself, I wielded the weapon with both hands to stabilize my aim.

“Goddammit…” I whispered to myself, breathing heavily. “Come on!”

I could only see one side of his face, yet I was astonished to realize how vulnerable the Boogeyman looked at that moment. So helpless, so defenseless… So unlike him…

No, it would only be one moment. One movement of my finger and it all would be over. But even if the implications of that action instantly made me nauseous.

“I have no choice… I have no choice” I reminded myself, trying to swallow the lump in my throat. “Then why is this so hard?”

I couldn’t stop thinking that John Wick had never done anything to me. Of course, he had attacked me, but it had been in self-defense. Before that, he hadn’t been anything but nice to me. He had been almost friendly and cordial, saying hello to me even though we were strangers. And only because we saw each other every day around the Continental. Little did he know, I had been planning his demise.

“Fuck it” I saved my gun and crouched down to turn him around. His body moved limply as I shoved him on his back.

Firstly lifting my head up to make sure no one was around to witness the scene, I took ahold of his arms and began dragging him. Being a tall and strong man, he was very heavy. I was glad I had meticulously planned for every eventuality and the warehouse wasn’t far from there.

Once I had settled John Wick in the chair, inside the abandoned warehouse, I took a breather. Leaning forward and patiently waiting until I caught my breath, I looked up at him. It felt like he could open his eyes any minute and jump at me again, like a supposedly dead villain in a bad horror movie.

Deciding to rest later, being it a priority to incapacitate him, I moved to stay behind him. Thoughts kept popping up in my head, telling me that he was faking and would take any opportunity to end me. That he was not unconscious but only buying time to finish what I started.

My heart thumped against my chest as I tied his hands behind his back, tight and secure, and tugged at them for good measure. Then I immediately positioned myself before him, not wanting to be anywhere near his reach.

His head was hanging forward, chin against his chest, and his hair covered his face. Nonetheless, I observed him with curiosity. It was hard to wrap my head around the fact that I had managed to capture the Boogeyman, that I was standing right before him.

To distract myself before I could be overwhelmed with emotions again, I pulled out my gun and made sure it was loaded. I shook my head, mentally lecturing myself, at the thought that my backup plan wasn’t the best. How would it help to abduct him if I couldn’t shoot at first?

I had convinced myself that it would be different if he was conscious. And if not, I had plans C and D. Following that conviction, I saved the gun and instead picked up the bucket full of water that was on the ground next to the chair.

Taking a deep breath beforehand, I threw the content of the bucket toward his face. He stirred, heavily lifting his head up and opening his eyes. Then he shook his head to get rid of the wet tufts of dark hair that stuck to his forehead and eyes.

I paused, waiting until he was lucid enough to do anything. He peered at me, brows furrowed for a moment until the recognition appeared on his dark eyes.

“You’re awake” I showed him a fake friendly smile. “Good”

His eyes, intelligent and dangerous, carefully traveled around the warehouse we were in. Then they landed on me, watching me in deep though, before he finally spoke up.

“Why are you doing this?” It was the first time I heard his gruff voice, and it sent a shiver down my spine. “Who are you working for?”

I lifted my chin to appear dignified, holding his piercing stare.

“Someone who has unfinished business with you”

“That could be anybody” He said with a humorless laugh.

I moved my hands to where my gun rested, knowing the sooner I finished this, the better. However, he piped up once more.

“What are you getting out of this, money?”

“I don’t want money”

“Everyone wants money” He spoke tiredly, like the whole situation was nothing but an inconvenience. “Why would you be any different?”

“Whatever you say” I feebly pointed my weapon at him once more.

“I was unconscious” He continued, not even looking at my gun. “Why didn’t you kill me?”

“Stop talking” I slowly said, resting the barrel of the gun against his forehead.

“You had the perfect chance to do it“ His eyes were cold and cunning as he watched me closely. “But I’m still alive”

“I said” I paused, crossing his face with my free fist. “Shut up”

John Wick was unimpressed as he recovered from the punch and reconnected his eyes with mine. The silence was dense as we glared daggers at each other.

“You’re afraid” He said through grit teeth, his rough voice dripping with hostility. “You couldn’t do it”

“You want to fuck around? Fine”

I punched him across the face once more, received with the familiar feeling of the adrenaline taking over. Another punch fell. And then another, and another, and another. My brain could only process the catharsis of the act instead of the brutality of it, or how unnecessary it all was. Or how I was only making him mad. And I couldn’t stop myself because I felt powerful for once.

Before I knew, I was struggling to breathe as I saw the results of my outburst. He was completely battered and his shirt was stained with blood. I had lost control, and there was now murder in John Wick’s eyes as a result.

I took a step back, clutching my fist as my knuckles burned in the aftermath.

“Who the hell are you?” When he spoke again like nothing had happened, his voice showcased sheer hatred. Another shiver ran down my spine.

“That’s… none of your business”

“I disagree. I think it is my business”

“Is that a threat?”

We stared at each other, seizing each other up. Then, all of a sudden, he lunged forward in his chair and screamed at me. Even if he was still tied up, I took a step backward.

His dangerous gaze lingered on me, and I held it even if I was busy putting some order into my thoughts. After a brief pause, I pulled out my knife and pointed it at him.

“I don’t think you’re in a position to be threatening me, John Wick” I rested the edge of the knife against his cheek, but he didn’t bat an eye.

To test him, I moved the blade to his neck and slowly began pressing deeper into his throat. He didn’t falter, nor did he try to back up from the threat.

I sarcastically chuckled, even if my heart skipped a beat when I met with his glance. He wasn’t scared in the slightest, but it didn’t matter if he was or not.

“What are you gonna do to me?” His voice had acquired a new roughness, filled with contempt. “Kill me? You don’t have the guts”

“That’s it” I grunted, positioning myself behind him and angrily grabbing a handful of his hair, yanking his head backward as I put the knife against his neck, cutting him slightly. “Stop. Fucking. Talking”

“Or what?”

“Or” I menacingly whispered in his ear. “You’re gonna be sorry”

“Right” There was a hint of amusement in his voice, and I realized why too late.

Standing behind him I had made a terrible mistake. Proof of that was how his hand, still tied up, took ahold of my knee and sharply twisted it, causing me to scream in pain. I squirmed and kneeled down to try and alleviate the pressure of his grip. He took this to his advantage.

Giving that the knife wasn’t against his throat anymore, he pushed his head backwards until it collided with my nose. Then he stood up on the chair and pushed it against me, making me fall down with the force of the movement.

I promised myself not to freeze this time, frantically going for my gun. By the time I pointed it at him, he had crashed on top of the chair with his full weight. When he stood again, he carelessly unwrapped the loose ropes from his wrists. It fell to the ground along with the pieces of wood that survived from the impact. What a beast!

Feeling the imminent threat, I pulled the trigger before he could come any closer. Because I hadn’t aimed first, it landed on his right shoulder. He didn’t even stop, only wincing and groaning at the shot, and continued his advance to me.

I cocked the gun and prepared to fire again, but he kicked it from my hands. It slid on the ground, away from my reach. My heartbeat acquired a crazed pace as he went to retrieve it.

“Fuck” Feeling too shaky to stand, I shuffled backwards to try and escape.

The sight of John Wick wielding my gun and walking closer to me, pointing the weapon at my face, was the most terrifying thing I had witnessed in my entire life. Pure nightmare fuel.

I shut my eyes and tried to mentally prepare myself for death. I gulped when he deliberately elongated the psychological torture by taking his time shooting.

All I could comprehend at that moment was fear. How my chest was going to jump out of my chest if it didn’t stop beating like crazy. I was shaking so much that my hands against the ground stopped supporting me and my back fell against the ground. There was only one thought in my mind. I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want to die, I didn’t want to die, I didn’t want to die!

I jolted up, gasping at the following sound. Something falling to the ground. I slowly opened one eye to see the gun there, not too far from me.

Puzzled, I looked up to John Wick. He was towering over me, watching me with so much disdain that I had to look away. None of us moved for what felt like minutes.

My mouth was completely dry. Tears burned in my eyes. My throat hurt.

“W-W-Why?” I managed to ask him, avoiding eye contact and doing my best to breathe.

“Consider it a rare showcase of mercy” He responded. “For not killing me”

I watched him with the corner of my eye. He put a hand against the bullet in his shoulder and turned around. He just left me there, shaking like a leaf, and walked away.

Covering my face with my hands, I sobbed as I reminded myself to breathe. I didn’t have any strength, so I just lied there until I recovered from the traumatic experience.

The Unmentionables

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #14 MAY 1988 BY KEVIN EASTMAN AND ERIC TALBOT

SYNOPSIS (FROM TURTLEPEDIA)

Casey Jones is patrolling the sleepy streets of Northampton, Massachusetts looking for some crimes to prevent. Northampton is nothing like New York City, however, so the mighty Casey is occupying his spare time as a vigilante by narrating events as if he were Mike Hammer. Jones is a little homesick for the Big Apple, but he's also reminiscing about the good times he had in this town as a kid with his cousin Sid. As Casey walks familiar ground, he passes by Louie's Variety store and is stunned by what he sees... the brass cow that once served as a rooftop landmark for the business has been stolen! Jones is enraged and gets to work on the case right away.

As Casey interviews Louie for details, a local cop walks in and assures the shopkeeper that the theft was probably just a college prank and that the cow will show up soon. Casey gets angry about the police officer's blase attitude, which only angers the cop, who tells Jones to "Butt out—pronto!" Casey storms off, vowing to find the cow.

The following morning, we find April frantically getting ready for work and asking where Casey is. Just then Casey walks through the door, icicles hanging from his hat and chin. Jones moans that he's been out all night looking for "the great cow" and collapses. Fortunately it's nothing serious, and Casey tries to explain about the theft, but April is running late and hurries off to work.

Cut to the Blue Bonnet Diner, where April is waiting tables. As Ms. O'Neil is going through her stubs, she overhears two men plotting something about a cow. One of the men slaps the other and tells him that if he has any info he should leave it at the front desk of Hotel Northampton, room 213. April is suspicious and tries to remember where she heard about a cow earlier in the day when she sees the newspaper headlines—the top story is about the missing cow!

Back at the farm house, Casey is trying to get the disinterested Turtles to help him when April calls. O'Neil tells Jones about the conversation she overheard, but unfortunately the man who slapped his partner overhears April's phone conversation and becomes alarmed. Casey takes down the hotel information and slams the phone down in his excitement over having a lead. April is unhappy because she wanted to go along.

Casey gets to the hotel and tries to get the woman at the front desk to tell him who's in room 213, but all he manages to do is get thrown out of the joint. As Jones sits on the stoop outside wondering what to do next, April arrives. April thinks she can have better luck getting the information, and she goes inside. As Fate would have it, just as O'Neil gets into the lobby, the slapping man (whose name is Howard) walks through with another fellow. April overhears the two making plans. Apparently Howard works for the older Texan man and they're making elaborate plans for a graduation party.

Later that night, April, Casey and the turtles arrive at the parking lot of the Hotel Northampton. Casey has asked the turtles to search room 213, and while the guys aren't happy about doing it, they agree. Jones and O'Neil crash the posh graduation party inside.

The Turtles find a bunch of paperwork and photographs of the Texan, Howard and the Brass Cow—however, they also discover they're in room 215—the wrong place!

As April is prowling the party looking for clues, she's spotted by Howard. O'Neil darts out into the lobby, where she's accosted by three men, Mikal Smengie and his brothers Luka and Luka. Unfortunately April has stumbled into a rendezvous between the Smengie Brothers and the Texan... a ten million dollar meeting that they all want to keep secret. Howard gags April and tells the Brothers to take her with them. Howard also give Mikal a briefcase full of money and an address. The Texan complains about loose ends and Howard says that he'll take care of things.

Back in the hotel room, the turtles decide that this case is too complicated and the police need to be notified. As they head out, they see April being kidnapped. The guys scramble down to the parking lot, but they're too late to stop the van holding their friend from escaping. The Turtles pile into their truck and head off to chase the van.

Casey goes into a rest room inside the hotel to gather his thoughts. He sits on top of a toilet in an empty stall as two guys come in. Jones overhears the two talking about a "prize cow" at Norman Whitty's place on Route 116. After the men leave, Casey dashes out to the parking lot to get his truck so he can investigate... except the truck is gone! Undaunted, Casey hails a cab.

Meanwhile the Turtles have followed the van to an old garage in the woods. Inside are the three brothers carrying weapons, a bound April and a well wrapped cow. As April berates her captors and warns them that she has friends, the Turtles burst in and kick the shell outta the Smengies. Once the Brothers are tied to a post, the Turtles interrogate them. The men talk to one another in Slovakian, which angers Raph and he threatens them. Under duress, Mikal explains that the brass cow was stolen from his family by their other brother Louie before the revolution. They've returned to steal the brass cow back and to sell it to Mr. Cudworth, who collects antique cows. April finds the story dubious, as ten million dollars is involved. Raph gets even angrier and decides to bash the cow to bits. Mikal then panics and exclaims that the cow is solid gold, and that they had stolen it before the revolution so that the new dictator wouldn't be able to use its wealth. They now want to sell it and share the wealth with their people.

Leo is suspicious, but he wants to see how things will play out before calling the police. In particular, Leonardo is interested in the Texan's role in these events. Leo hatches a plan that will allow them to get the real story.

Back at the hotel, the Texan receives a phone call from Leonardo, who tells the rich man that the deal goes down tonight and that they want an additional 5 million dollars. This does not please the Texan but he gathers up his forces and heads out.

Meanwhile, Casey has arrived at Norman's place on Route 116 in the taxi. Casey is jubilant about finding the cow and heads into the barn with glee—only to discover that the cow inside is real! Just then, Norman shows up with a shotgun and yells at Casey to get away from his prize winning heifer. Jones fast talks his way out of things and piles back into the cab, ordering the very unhappy driver to take him back to the hotel.

Back at the Smengie garage, the Turtles are all decked out in trench coats and firearms, awaiting their meeting with the Texan. The men show up and the Turtles demand the money. Howard asks where the Smengie Brothers are and the Texan demands to see the cow. Mike unwraps the cow only to reveal that it's a fake! As tempers flare, the Smengies crash through the garage door in a flatbed truck, with the real "brass" cow chained to the bed. A short fire fight erupts between the Texan's men and the Turtles, but the millionaire and his henchmen take off to chase the Smengies. The turtles pile into their own truck and bolt out in hot pursuit.

As the Smengie's truck barrels down the road, they pass Casey's cab. Jones grabs the wheel of the car and spins it around. The driver is scared to death and Casey screams at him to "follow that cow!" The cab gains on the truck and Casey jumps out onto the hood of the taxi and leaps onto the cow. Jones causes Mikal to crash the vehicle into a ditch and shouts, "You pukes are under arrest!"

Just then the Texan shows up, and Howard yells, "Correction! You're all under arrest!" As the millionaire wonders what's going on, Howard explains that he's an undercover secret service agent. It turns out that the Texan (whose name isn't Cudworth, it's actually Emil Bruzeniak) is in the business of buying and selling stolen national treasures. Howard has been working for Bruzeniak for two years, waiting to build enough evidence to bust him. Howard calls in his backup and two helicopters appear. The turtles and April arrive on the scene. The turtles bail out of the truck as April drives up to see what's going on.

When April arrives, Howard wants to hear why she and Casey are involved in the case. Jones explains everything in long detail and Howard demands to talk to the four men who helped April escape. April tells the secret agent that her allies wish to remain anonymous and pleads that they all be let go, as everything turned out fine. The agent begrudgingly admits that Casey and April helped solve the case and agrees to forget about their friends' involvement, filing it under "unmentionables." Casey and April walk off arm in arm as the criminals are lead off in handcuffs.

The turtles have witnessed everything from the safety of the woods.

REVIEW

This may not feel like a TMNT story for the most part, but it has been kind of adapted into TV. Because the story is centered around Casey and April, the Turtles are once more, on the side of the story.

On the other hand, April and Casey have been on the side themselves as well since they left New York, so it is nice to explore these characters. And it’s only one issue, no one will be hurt.

HI All, my relative incidentally hint the few new motors in in a motor shop which selling new motor. The standing motors fall down each and another. Every day I suffer from pain. I have a wife and kids to support and an autistic son, so my wife cannot work, that way she can give him the care he needs. Medi-cal sent me a rejection. I can't get insurance because they all say they won't cover me for a pre-existing condition. I tried applying for the states pre existing healthcare program, they said I couldn't get coverage because my birth certificate has a different name than I have now. Hey......I have no control over the decisions mom made. I need help.!!! I struggle every single day and minute with this pain. I have a doctor that I pay cash to see, every time I go he gives me heck about writing a pain med. Script. Talks down to me really. He only gives a little bit, and its hard to find a cash doctor at all who would even offer these at all because of the people who abuse it. Food, It Turns Out, Has Little to Do With Why I Love to Travel

It’s the people that make a place — but these days, human interaction is hard to come by

I used to love to travel. I’d wander through new cities for days on end, eating and drinking (but mostly eating) in four-seat izakayas, farm-driven pizzerias, southern seafood halls, and boat noodle cafes, talking to locals and walking for miles. Restaurants have always been my joyous entry point to a place and its people. The food, I thought, was what made me love to explore the world.

That slowly fading memory — what it felt like to discover a new city, stomach first — is what excited me about going out on the road again, which I did a couple months ago, driving from Los Angeles to Corsicana, Texas and back, stopping to eat in places like Albuquerque, Amarillo, El Paso, and Phoenix.

Let me be clear: I absolutely would not and do not recommend frivolous travel. In my case, a looming publishing deadline on The Bludso Family Cookbook is what sent me on the long, not-so-winding road to Texas in the midst of a global pandemic, where I would be staying with my longtime friend, mentor, colleague, and big brother Kevin Bludso. Once there, we would be cooking, writing, recipe testing, interviewing, living together, and, in all likelihood, drinking a fair quantity of brown spirits at the end of each night (please, someone get that man a Hennessy sponsorship).

I’ve spent the better part of the last 15 years working in the food industry in one capacity or another. I’ve been a bartender, server, chef, culinary director, restaurant consultant, cookbook author, and food writer. My plan since last year had been to continue writing and consulting on the side, but also to finally open my own restaurant. Nothing extravagant. Something small and intimate. A humble, comforting place of my own — clean and well-lit, a true neighborhood restaurant where people can get to know each other, where the food and the service is unassuming and genuine, something with no desire for expansion or duplication. I consider myself unbelievably lucky that I didn’t open a restaurant right before the pandemic hit.

Instead, I’ve spent the last several months at home, making a quarantine cooking show with my wife called Don’t Panic Pantry. It’s been a good distraction, but I thought a work-related excuse to drive through the American Southwest and its expansive desert would be a cleansing, meditative, soul-resetting break from what I’d begun to think of as perpetual purgatory.

I took every precaution. A nasal-swab COVID test right before I departed. I also hopefully still had antibodies (my wife and I both had COVID-19 way back in March). It was, at the very least, the polite thing to do: Get tested before joining someone in their home for two weeks.

I had planned on driving straight through Arizona from LA, avoiding anything except gas stations until I made it to New Mexico, surviving on a sturdy mix of cold brew and air conditioning to keep me awake. I’d never been to New Mexico before. I’d pored over Instagram photos of chile-drenched Southwestern Mexican food, enchiladas oozing with melted cheese, their red and green chile sauces popping with Instagram photo-editing exposure. My usual pre-trip Google map was loaded with thoroughly researched restaurants along my route. In earlier times, I’d have peppered each map point with essential info like hours of operation and must-order dishes; now, I was looking up intel like outdoor seating, takeout quality, and, most crucially, whether or not a place had managed to stay open at all.

I had slowly but gradually heaped unreasonable expectations on a green chile cheeseburger.

I left with a bullish heart. But each stop to fuel up took away a notch of my optimism-fueled excitement and replaced it with caution. Each person in a mask made me a little more depressed; each person without, a little angrier.

Ten hours in and I had made it to New Laguna, New Mexico. I stopped at Laguna Burger, an iconic mini-chain inside of a gas station. It’s a fast-food place to be sure, but according to old photos online there used to be stools set up against the counter, and even a couple of tables and a few chairs. Those are, of course, gone now — pushed to the side of the room and leaving in their place a vacuous emptiness, even for a gas-station dining room. The staff was nice but appropriately wary. I did not partake in the self-serve Kool-Aid pickle jar. I got my food and then sat in my car, emotionally deflated and no longer very excited to eat my first-ever green chile burger — something I had wanted to try for years.

Ordering a burger at a place like this was supposed to be a tiny gateway into the culture and personality of the place, however small that sampling was going to be. There is an emotional atmosphere, a vibe, that’s specific to each and every restaurant, and I had perhaps never been so truly aware that such a thing existed until I noticed it had been zapped entirely from this one. In its place was a blanket of nervous, sad precaution — added to, I’m sure, by my own nervousness.

So I sat in my car with my sack of food, gloomily disappointed even before the first bite. They forgot to salt the fries and it felt oddly appropriate. In this moment, to no fault of the restaurant itself, the food didn’t matter. It couldn’t have. I had slowly but gradually heaped unreasonable expectations on a green chile cheeseburger, wanting it to justify a 12-hour drive and to somehow soothe an anxious mind. But the food, it occurred to me, wasn’t what I was after at all.

Later on, in Albuquerque, I picked up a four-pack of beer from Arrow Point Brewing and received the now familiar and appropriate treatment: measured, cautious polite gratitude. It was a transaction, appreciated by both sides, but with a higher degree of precondition from both sides as well. I followed it up with a takeout bag of enchiladas and a taco from the beloved and iconic Duran’s Pharmacy, taking them back to the motel room I checked myself into earlier. It was 5:30 p.m. The enchiladas had sloshed in the bag. I took a bite and understood: It was comforting, but not nearly enough. Like being single and reconnecting with an ex, only to both immediately discover that there’s nothing there anymore — two empty vessels with no connection beyond a memory.

I took a sip of beer and fell asleep for an hour. When I awoke the city had turned dark and I knew there was no point in going anywhere. The world felt dystopian and deflated. I’d left my redundant, loving, comfortable bubble to experience life alone on the road, and all I wished was that I was right back there with my wife and my dog.

When my wife and I had COVID-19, we lost our sense of smell and taste for a bit. It was, as my wife put it, “a joyless existence.” Now I had my taste back, but somehow the joy of eating was still gone.

The enchiladas, in a box, alone, on the floor of my motel, were just enchiladas. Because here’s a thing I’ve come to understand of late: context really does affect flavor. A place, its atmosphere, the people within it, their mood (and ours) genuinely change the way things taste. A restaurant lasagna has to be twice as good as your mother’s — or that one you had on that trip to Italy — for it to remind you of it even a little. A rack of smoked pork ribs will never taste as good on a ceramic plate atop a tablecloth as it does from within a styrofoam box on the hood of your car, downwind from a roadside smoker. I hope that I never find out what Waffle House tastes like while sober, eaten in broad daylight.

So as it turns out, when it comes to my lifelong love of food and travel, the food might not have mattered — not to the degree I thought it did, anyway. Not without everything that goes along with it. The surly bartender in the dark room who fries your chicken behind the bar at Reel M Inn in Portland while a guy two seats down makes fun of you for being from California is a huge part of why that might be my favorite fried chicken in the world. The friend of a friend who abandoned his family (thanks Marc!) to drive a stranger, me, around Toronto for two days and show off the city’s outstanding versions of goat roti (from Mona’s Roti) and bún riêu cua (from Bong Lua) makes me realize that yes, the food is outstanding, but that it’s the people — excited to show off their hometown, its restaurants, and their community — who make travel worthwhile.

Would Tokyo be my favorite eating city in the world if my now-wife and I hadn’t befriended two total strangers in a six-seat dive bar, knocking back cocktails until we both threw up, only to come through to the other side fully bonded over late-night grilled pork skewers with another stranger who gave me his business card and said that he had been eating in this stall for over a decade? What is a bar without a bartender? It’s just, well, being home.

The restaurant business can be both horrible and wonderful. It pays poorly, it requires incredibly long hours, and in many instances, you are going broke while making food for people who complain that it’s too expensive. But it is, as Anthony Bourdain often said, the Pleasure Business. It has always been a place for camaraderie, human connection, and community. Those were the things that made the nearly unbearable parts of our business worthwhile — and that connection, when you can have a genuine one between staff and customer, is what I think everyone really, truly wants out of the transaction. Those things still exist, I suppose, but all at arm’s length, or across an app.

I still eventually want to open my own restaurant. I think. But maybe I just want to open my memory of what it would have been in a different, earlier world. I don’t want to be a dinosaur, yearning for the good old days. But I also don’t want to live in a world where a third-party tech company stands between the restaurant and its customer. I don’t want someone to visit my city and think that a robot delivering them a sandwich is the best that we have to offer. I don’t want to have to download an app to order a cup of fucking coffee. Human connection, it turns out, is essential too, and we need to find a way to make it a part of our essential businesses again.

So what, in the midst of a health and humanitarian catastrophe, can we do? Well, we can decide where we spend our money. We support human connection and small businesses. We pick up takeout with our own hands from the places and the people that we love (safely, responsibly). We know that it is just gauze pressed against an open, oozing knife wound, but we try anyway.

So we travel because we have to, whether for work or as a needed break from monotony, and we reset our expectations, we open ourselves up to receiving that connection, we seek out the places that are adapting and we smile through our masks, and ask each other how we are doing, if only to show that somebody cares.

When I eventually made it to Corsicana, Texas, hoisting a large bag of dried red New Mexico chiles, I was greeted with an engulfing hug by Kevin Bludso; it was the first truly comforting thing that happened on the whole trip. I melted into the arms of my friend. I was back in a bubble, connected to something.

I spent two glorious weeks in that bubble, taking turns doing Peloton workouts and then drinking vegetable smoothies, before recipe-testing dishes like Fried Whole-Body Crappie and Ham Hock Pinto Beans; researching Kevin’s family history and then, true to form, sipping rye (me) and Hennessy (him) before I had to head home. Kevin’s food was outstanding, but it was made all the better by the time spent together cooking it. So when I readied myself to get out on the road again, my expectations had changed. I knew the food alone could only do so much.

This disease has been a reflection and amplifier of all of our weak points — and the restaurant business is certainly no different. This industry was already ripe with flaws. It has been teetering on the brink of a seismic shift for years — COVID-19 just accelerated it, and all the platitudes, Instagram stories, and false optimism won’t fix anything. But there have always been bad restaurants as well as good restaurants. I suppose it’s no different now. Yet it is maybe just a little bit harder to give and to be open to receiving the human connection that makes the whole experience worthwhile.

I hope that I never find out what Waffle House tastes like while sober, eaten in broad daylight.

I hit the road early, and after about 10 and a half hours, fueled by caffeine, Christopher Cross, and Bonnie Raitt — with one depressing pit stop in El Paso at the famed H&H Car Wash, where an old curmudgeon out front insisted I take off my mask before going inside — I arrived in Las Cruces, at La Nueva Casita Café. I called ahead, hoping not to have to wait so I could just grab my food and get back on the road. My guard was still up, but then the woman on the other end of the phone was so charming and kind that I was immediately disarmed. She graciously steered me toward the chile relleno burrito (“it’ll be the easiest one to eat in the car”). A few minutes later I came inside to pick up my food and the two women behind the counter were, frankly, a delight. I paid, and was promptly handed my food and thanked with genuine, casual appreciation for coming in. The burrito was excellent.

Bolstered by the kindness of strangers, I drove another five and a half hours into Phoenix. As a bit of an obsessive pizza maker (I had the tremendous fortune to train with Frank Pinello of Best Pizza in Williamsburg, and also had a hand in helping to open Prime Pizza in Los Angeles), I was here to try the new 18-inch New York-style fusion pie by the great Chris Bianco at their Pane Bianco outpost on Central.

Just as at La Nueva Casita Café, the staff was friendly, genuine, helpful, and kind. In retrospect, it took so little but it meant so much. When I expressed a need for caffeine, they sent me next door to Lux Central for a large iced coffee, where the barista talked to me from a responsible distance, wished me a safe drive, and gave me a free blueberry muffin. Even eaten in my car, Chris’s pizza was truly outstanding — crisp, thin, and pliable, successfully pulling off the New York-modern Neapolitan (ish) fusion that, in lesser hands, turns into an 18-inch bowl of soup.

I drove the last six hours home, finding myself encouraged by these final two restaurant experiences, excited by what the best in our industry are still somehow capable of in spite of everything. It was, frankly, inspirational to find genuine interaction, care, and kindness in this new reality.

It reminds me of my mother, actually. I remember when I was a kid, she would pick up the phone to call a restaurant, or Blockbuster Video, to ask them a question. I would always hear her say something like: “Hi Randy! How are you today?” and I would say, “Mom! Do you know him?” and she would shake her head no. Then she would say, “Oh that’s great to hear, Randy. Hey listen, what time do you close today?” My brother and I used to make fun of her for that — for forcing this connection with someone she had no real relationship with beyond an exchange of services. Now, I plan to do exactly that, whenever and wherever I can.

DISCLAIMER: I am not an expert on Gotham and/or Jason Todd. I merely like the character of Red Hood and know a little about the city and Batman through several different movies.

Weeks passed. The Joker had escaped Arkham once more. Cerys and Gordon were working closely with Batman to get him back there, discovering hidden gaseous traces on some playing cards the clown had scattered across a night-club massacre. Red Hood and Cerys crossed paths a few times, eventually agreeing that Cerys would give him information about the clown in exchange for evidence to imprison Falcone (and, in turn, free Ziva). It was difficult for Red Hood to persuade Cerys to disclose G.C.P.D information to him. But he had proven himself a trust-worthy (and kinda/sorta good person) to her by saving a group of kids from a burning building after Cerys was being held back by other officers. The fire was immense and she, surely, would’ve died going in there. Red Hood not only saved the children, but saved her from a gruesome death.

He had her phone number and calls her while she waits for Gordon to come back to ask if there was anything he should know about the clown. She tells him they don’t have much info, just that Batman told them he was following a specific (and probably illicit) lead in the harbor. Red Hood hangs up on her after that and she mumbles “Dickhead” to herself. Exhausted from another day spent staking out moronic criminals, she stares out of the car window at the night sky.

The door opening startles Cerys so much that she spills coffee in her lap. She was about to take her first sip. Moist, she sits there staring at the stain on her black pants. Brief silence as she glares at the middle-aged Commissioner.

“Oh jeez, are you alright?” Gordon asks, frantically trying to take a few tissues out of his tiny little pack to help her clean. He holds a clump out to her and she takes them, annoyed. She hadn’t slept well since the fire, worrying what would happen to those kids. Orphans now. This coffee was her attempt to wake up.

Patting on her pants with one hand still holding her coffee cup, she yawns quietly.

“Where we HEADED…” she mumbles as she slaps Gordon’s hand away from trying to clean her. “…now?”

“Uh, right. I think we can call it a night. Batman’s following that lead and we don’t have any new information. I’m gonna go back and talk to the DA about the Mob. You should go home and get some rest though. You need it.” Gordon starts the car and pulls out of the parking lot. “I’ll drive you home.”

Gordon drops Cerys off at her apartment. With moist pants, she waddles up the staircase to her door. Once inside, she takes off her stained clothes and throws them in the corner of her bedroom where her laundry-basket is already overflowing. She sniffs her armpits, trying to remember the last time she showered properly and not the ok-ill-just-rub-a-wet-washcloth-under-my-arms shower she does throughout long work periods. She decides it’s time to get her apartment and herself back in order and mentally prepares for the long cleaning process. Shower. Shower first.

Some hours pass with Cerys, back to her squeaky-clean self, collecting the many beer bottles and other trash tossed around her living room. She stuffs all of it in a large black trash bag until it reaches capacity. Looking around and not seeing anything else to possibly shove in the bag, she grabs it and carries it down the stairs. The microwave clock says 1:38 a.m. It’s a chilly night and the alley-way, where the giant trash container is, is deserted except for a few stray cats. Cerys regrets only wearing a tank-top out, feeling her skin cover itself with goosebumps. Some jerks moved the container all the way to the back of the alley, where the street light doesn’t reach. She can make out the silhouette of the container and drags the oozing trash bag, the only sound being the plastic skidding on the concrete. As she’s moving closer, however, another sound becomes clearer and she stops in her path. It sounds like…panting? She frowns, looking over her shoulder. The alley behind her is still empty. Turning back and gulping visibly, Cerys squints into the darkness near the container. Is someone there?

The panting is clear to hear now that she’s stopped dragging the trash bag. Slowly, she takes her phone out of her sweatpants and swipes up to activate the flashlight. Carefully, the woman shines the light towards the end of the alley. The light reveals black combat boots first. Cerys tenses up, realizing that there is a person lying next to the trash container. She moves the light upward to get a glimpse of the whole body.

“Oh my God.” The words escape her as she stares at a severely wounded Red Hood, panting on the ground with a hand on a gushing stomach wound, the other pointing a gun at her. He lowers it once he hears her voice. Dropping the bag, she runs over to him.

“I’ll call an ambulance.” Cerys unlocks her phone and begins typing 911, when Red Hood gives out a large groan and grabs her wrist with his free hand.

“..n-no.” His voice is shaky and barely audible with the amount of panting and broken mask interfering. Cerys looks at him perplexed and stares down at the wound. It’s a deep cut. “What?! You need to go to the hospital! Now.” She puts her hand on the wound to hold back the blood.

Then she scurries to her tiny lab table and grabs a Bunsen burner, alcohol and her first-aid kit. When she comes back to her bedroom, Red Hood is panting heavier than before. His eye is scrunched together in agony.

“Take off your mask.” She says, her voice shaking. What she’s about to do is something she has never done before and she is visibly anxious. If she doesn’t act fast, he’ll bleed out. She has no clue how long he’s been lying out there. Red Hood’s eye opens and stares at her.

“You need to bite into this. If you scream, they’ll call the police.” Cerys is holding a leather belt and points at the walls around them, indicating that the neighbors will notice. She places all of the items on the night stand. Red Hood watches her as she assembles something, and finally, takes off his mask with his free hand.

As she turns on the Bunsen burner, she takes the knife and cuts open his shirt exposing his bloody chest and abdomen. He doesn’t recoil, all he can focus on is the pain.

“I’m not a doctor, but if you can’t go to the hospital for whatever reason I’m going to have to take drastic measures.” Cerys’ voice continues to tremble. The man is only able to keep one eye open to look at her. She’s holding the knife over the blue flame. The blade is glowing.

“I have to cauterize your wound. It’s the only way to stop the bleeding.”

The man’s eye widens and his panting becomes even more intense than before. He’s trying to breathe through his nose now. She stares at him, her eyes boring into him as he’s looking right back at her. She bites her lip again. She’s waiting for confirmation. After what feels like endless minutes, he finally nods hesitantly. With that nod, she grabs the belt with her free hand and holds it in front of his mouth. He bites down on it letting his head fall back down onto the pillow, as his nose breathing becomes all she can hear in that moment. Holding the hot knife over the wound, she looks up at him one last time. He nods once more.

With that, Cerys pushes the flat side of the scorching blade on to the open wound. A loud sizzling noise escapes from the area and the man recoils heavily with suppressed and agonizing grunts leaving his clenched jaw. Cerys tries to calm him with a few “shhh”’s, but it’s no use. The pain must be horrific. She holds the knife down for a solid 35 seconds, making sure the whole wound is seared shut. The man is twitching in her bed, anguish written all over his scrunched face still biting into the belt with all his might. This horrible scene feels endless.

Cerys releases the blade from his body and the relief is visible for both of them. The wound is closed, sort of, and the man’s chest moves up and down as he takes deep breaths to calm himself. She listens to his breathing for a few seconds, relieved that this part is over. Recollecting herself, the woman quickly grabs a gauze and alcohol and begins cleaning the wound. The man spits out the belt, leaving his head lying heavy on the pillow. He is drenched in sweat, the white strands sticking to his face.

“Are…you ok?” she asks, her voice still shaky, as she wraps the gauze around his abdomen. There are tears in her eyes.

There is silence for a while. Cerys thinks he’s passed out as his breathing has become less audible. She finishes covering the wound and tapes it down. She lets out a deep, quivering sigh, not sure if what she just did was the right thing to do. Should she have called the ambulance despite his objection? But he was terrified of someone finding him there. This was the only way to save him…right?

Having gathered all the first aid materials she frantically threw on to the night stand, Cerys gets up and starts to leave the room, thinking she needs to make some morphine in her lab now. As she’s walking towards the door, she hears his faint and weak voice say:
