8. I answered this for mshenko already, so I'll do this one for my mshep clone, Shawn, and his partner Major (Leigh) Coats :) Leigh really comes to admire Shawn's tenacity the longer they're together. There's a certain determination Shawn has to learn and experience things, coupled with a bluntness that he likely doesn't realize actually encourages those around him to also try new things. Even if he's bad at something he doesn't just give up as a matter of course -- failure may make him grumpy, but Shawn's a natural learner at heart and has an innate sense of curiosity that helped reignite Leigh's own sense of wonder. Shawn on the other hand loves Leigh's steadiness. When they first met Shawn was on a downward spiral of doubt with a full blown identity crisis, questioning his place in a world where there really weren't many (or any, so far as he knows) people like him. Leigh was definitely an anchoring force, one that scared him at first because he couldn't fathom the idea of anyone being interested in him as a friend let alone anything else once they'd learned the truth that he was a partially synthetic clone of the "real Shepard" and not just his long-lost twin that Shepard told everyone he was. But Leigh didn't let it shake him up, thought it over, and decided knowing full-well what Shawn was that he wanted to try anyway -- and that steadiness persisted in the first few years of dating, when so much of their relationship would wind up being long-distance. 18. I'll do this for Shawn and Leigh as well. Dancing, dinner dates, long walks if they're going out, or eating in and watching movies if they aren't. Shawn was learning classical dancing (ballroom, swing) when they started dating and Leigh decided to learn as well, so it's one of their favorite shared activities to do together. Otherwise it's a matter of trying out new things or whatever catches their interest -- new foods, new music, new venues. Botanical gardens or arboretums are a favorite for walks. As for how long they date -- four years before they move in :) Needing breaks never really came up all that much since Shawn traveled a lot in those four years and lived on the Citadel while Leigh lived in London for the majority of the dating stage of their relationship, so the breaks were more or less built-in for a while there. 28. This one will be for Everett and Kaidan (my mshenko boys) Everett is a pretty polarizing figure before AND after the Reaper War, so "vacation" had always been and continues to be tricky for him. He's very recognizable and reactions to him range from love/admiration to absolute, almost unhinged hatred. So trying to go anywhere with a higher human populace always sets him on edge, hyper-aware that people are noticing him and hyper-aware that his loved ones/friends are also noticing people notice him, and then he feels incredibly guilty that no one can have a relaxing time. While no one has gotten close to him so far, that doesn't really stop people (admirers and detractors alike) from trying to get into his space, and it's a coin toss whether something thrown his way will be a nice letter or flower or someone's drink. After the war, though, he does start getting more invitations to non-human or non-human majority places, and has had several lovely vacations on Sur'Kesh, Thessia, Rannoch, and more exciting adventures on Tuchanka. Kaidan will argue that fighting thresher maws is not relaxing enough to be considered a vacation, but Evvy and Wrex beg to differ.

In regards to post/689689779025084416 not 100% sure of the context on this so sorry for butting in if I'm mistaken but I really don't love this mentality. It's very unfriendly toward people with adhd and even autism. Not everyone is the same of course but hyper fixation is something a lot of neurodivergents have and we can't control it. Sometimes it lasts for months, year's, weeks, etc but everyone is different and tbh if within the right environment ( a friendly, interactive rpc ) and with a good amount of free time, you wouldn't believe the amount of stuff I could do and what I could build within a week if I'm fixated on something, even for a short time. From personal experience I can say my fixations are shorter lived now than when I was younger but I also think that has a lot to do with the current rpc climate which is simply not as friendly or interactive as it used to be. I think you will probably find a lot of people who “blog hop” and make new muses / abandon muses constantly are people with some type of neurodivergence and are failing to get the right amount of simulation / dopamine from those particular rpcs/fandoms and/or are being forced to dodge toxic behaviours from other community members.

Again for me personally when I fixate those fixations don’t really leave me, I’ve been fixating on certain things since I was a child, but my drive and inspiration to write for those particular things / characters can be short lived at times. (I never totally abandon a character, but I do have sporadic bouts of activity followed by sometimes lengthy periods of inactivity that oscillate wildly sometimes. I also frequently remake my blog(s) for said characters if / when the mood to “refresh” their aesthetic / generally reignite the vibes strikes. And as a side note I’m trying really hard to NOT do this because of this “i hate ppl who remake/blog hop/abandon muses thing” thing I’ve been encountering more and more frequently.

As I said its different for everyone but speaking from experience one of the biggest things that has rendered me a “flaky” rper in recent years is the toxicity and disinterest of everyone else in the rpc. Sometimes you hit a sweet spot and manage to get a blog up in just the right circumstances (the ppl are friendly, open, welcoming and genuinely want to interact with each other / new people) but I’m finding this to be a few and far between thing nowadays and I’m really sad to report that often when I find these little moments where I can start up a blog for a character / fandom I’m fixated on and get appropriate engagement to keep my brain simulated, toxicity, hate and unwarranted competition (particularly from duplicates) takes over and ruins the experience hard and fast.

And I think you’ll find examples of toxicity or otherwise general lack of interest / engagement from particular RPCs is what creates “blog hoppers” and flakey writers. I think its rarely because they randomly took on a character they didn't want to write/didn't really like.

With that slightly aside: "STOP SHITTING ON PEOPLE WHO GET ANNOYED WHEN SOMEONE DROPS MUSES EVERY WEEK." I don't really understand what is so bad about people who drop muses or hop blogs a lot anyway. Imo, this acts like rping is some serious job contract and those of us who aren't able to provide consistent content for any reason are defunct and evil.

Imo, this is weird behaviour and falls into the toxicity of taking roleplaying way too seriously and trying to view other writers as content machines for your own personal gratification and not as actual humans who don't even need to have “good reasons” for why they abandoned a blog within a week or whatever the case may be. If you can say “boo you cant develop or establish anything within a week etc” why are you so mad? Because the same is true for you / your muse / your “potential” and failed connection with the flakey mun you’re complaining about. You never would have gotten ANYWHERE with them so what is there to be mad about? You lost nothing. You’re just shitting on someone because you couldn’t get something you wanted out of them which it seems you had very little incentive to want/expect in the first place? Like is that not the bottom line? I mean yes it sucks to see a real cool blog and want to establish something with them but by your own admission the blog couldn’t have done / been doing that much in the first place so what's with the rage ? I don’t know this just doesn't connect for me.

The demonization I’ve seen some people lay on blog hoppers or people with shifting/fickle muse inspo has been pretty jarring lately and I find it a little concerning and off putting. Again, sorry for butting in or if I’ve taken this a bit out of context but I’ve spoke about this on my blogs before I even saw this. I just think this mentality lends itself to encouraging weird entitled behaviour at best and ableism at worst and so this is probably just something worth considering...

Blazin' - Chapter 4

Chapter 3

"Good morning." The familiar voice welcomes you as you step out of your bedroom.

"Morning." You respond. Changkyun is sitting on the couch, his laptop sitting on the coffee table in front of him. By the empty cup of coffee next to it, you assume he's been up for a little while already.

"I'm just answering some emails and calls about last night. I'm almost done here." He seems to read your mind and answer the questions you didn't have to ask.

"Okay, take your time. Do you need more coffee?" He shakes his head no as he lifts his phone to his hear and greets the caller. You make your way to the kitchen for coffee for yourself and some breakfast, leaving him alone to tend to his work again.

Before long Changkyun walks in with a soft smile. "How are you?"

"I'm okay." You sigh.

Changkyun walks to you and without hesitation he wraps his arms around you, his hand softly cradling the back of your head. You rest your head against his shoulder as you melt into his embrace. "I missed you." He murmurs.

"Kyun?"

"Hmm?"

"Now that I know about everything, what does this mean for us?" You force the words out.

"I don't know." He admits.

"What if I helped with the case?" You suggest. You feel Changkyun's body tense.

"No." His voice is cold. He backs away from you to face you, dropping his hands to your hands, holding them in his.

"I can help. He's already after me. Probably more now that you took me away from him." You argue. Changkyun lets out a frustrated sigh.

"It's to dangerous. After all I did to protect you? You want to give yourself to him?" He almost laughs in disbelieve.

"You have other people for the exact same thing. I can just be another. He's obviously interested in me." You reason. Changkyun starts to say something else but you cut him off before he can get another word out. "Listen, please. You need to get proof. I can be that proof. You have the team and knowledge to keep me safe. Anyways, you already said I'm at risk. No use in me being at risk and not helping, taking up more members of your team to protect me when I can be contributing."

"You might as well have a bright red target on you now. He knows I own the club. He doesn't know that I have any involvement with the investigation. As far as we know, he thinks he's no longer being tracked. Which is letting us get closer to him again after all these years."

"So let me go to the club with the intent of getting him to try and take me." You plea. "The faster you catch him and shut everything down, the faster everyone is out of danger."

Changkyun looks at you without saying anything. His eyes full of thought. Finally after a few minutes he drops his head. "Fine."

You take a deep breath. Fully aware of the danger you just begged to jump head first in, you couldn't help but feel a little nervous. "I do have one question." Changkyun raises one eyebrow, waiting to hear it. "Why has it taken so long to get any kind of proof?"

"Well we never see him leave with anyone. We see him at locations every time someone goes missing, but we never see him take anyone. We look at video footage and there's never anything that suggests he has anyone else that he's working with. He enters alone and leaves alone. The girls that go missing, the same, alone. They always walk out looking pretty damn sober. We can follow their movements for blocks on the public street cams, and there's never anything suspicious. The only thing everyone who goes missing has in common is that they talk to him at some point in the night. When one goes missing, he vanishes for months on end. In the four years we have been trying to track him there's only been 3 people to go missing."

You nod, understanding. "Okay."

"We will come up with a plan with the team in three days. I have to get everyone informed on this then will introduce you to everyone. Until then, I don't want you going anywhere alone." Changkyun states. "For now, I want you to try to relax."

Changkyun pulls you to the living room, and he sits down on the couch. You sit next to him and his arm pulls you into his side. You take a deep breath and try to clear your mind, but without luck. Changkyun runs his hand up and down your arm slowly. Your skin hyper aware of his touch.

You turn to look at him and he stills his hand. He searches your expression for a second before he pulls you on top of his lap. Running your hands through his long black hair you rest your forehead on his. Changkyun's hands rest on your hips, but when you pull slightly on his hair, his fingers grip your sides a little more. Unable to resist the temptation any longer he closes the distance between yours and his lips. Instantly kissing him back, it grows with more and more intensity as all the feelings for him that you relentlessly tried to keep buried deep down for so long come flooding back full force, no longer able to be ignored. For a short while you get lost in him and his touches as each kiss reignites the fire you had within that only he could set ablaze.

Ban equestrian sports from the Olympics

On 6 August 2021, we all witnessed Annika Schleu forcibly coercing her randomly assigned horse, Saint Boy, to jump despite its obvious distress and refusal to do so. Annika was ordered to “really hit” the horse and her now banned coach, Kim Raisner, punched it. I watched in absolute shock and horror as this poor horse, baring its teeth and sweating profusely, was suffering.

Cruelty is an old friend of the equestrian sports industry. Remember the “rollkur technique” controversy?

Rollkur involves drawing the horse’s neck round in a deep curve so its nose almost touches its chest. An infamous “blue tongue video” from 2009 shows Swedish dressage rider, Patrik Kittel, riding his stallion hyper-flexed to the point the horse’s tongue is blue, and hanging out of his mouth. Just before the 2012 Olympics, a photo capturing Kittel using the same technique reignited the rollkur debate in the horse community.

After some international pressure, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) eventually banned the practice.

In 2002, a report from the Daily Telegraph detailed “frequent incidents of violence” against dressage horses at competitions, including attacks that left horses with “torn mouths and bloodied flanks”.

There are other various cruel techniques involved in the training of horses for equestrian sports.

For example, Noseband tightening has caused a lot of changes in the behavior of the horses, temperature of the eye, and lastly, cardiac irregularities. Shock collars are used to tame horses. Dressage requires you to use spurs (a type of metal tool attached to riding boots used to direct the horse) despite cruelty concerns. A cursory glance on the Internet reveals countless incidences of suffering and vile tortuous practices.

What can we do to help these animals? Well, it turns out, quite a lot. Think about what we have achieved when we act together.

Zoo /circus goers used to enjoy watching animals perform amazing feats for their entertainment, blissfully unaware of the torture they endured behind the scenes. Once these practices came to light, we collectively agreed that forcing animals to perform in Zoos or circuses is inhumane, cruel, and barbaric.

Now, it’s time to address the ‘other’ elephant in the room.

How can we condemn and legislate against the use of animals in Zoos or circuses for entertainment when we continue to force horses to compete in sports that result in distress, severe injuries, and death?

This petition calls on the International Olympic Committee to ban equestrian sports from future Olympics.

Whats ur opinion on writing blogs leaving the jojo fandom to write for new fandoms? It really annoys me *sips tea* cuz they’ll probs come crawling back when part 6 gets its anime and act like they been real fans

honestly? i don’t mind at all. i want people in the fandom because they care about it and enjoy it! i don’t want people to force out content because it’s what is expected of them, especially if the muse has them moving onto other things. i’m personally kind of hyper fixated on jojo even now - i cling to things even after other people move on (the only other fandom i’ve written for since i started writing fanfic again is overwatch).

my own unpopular opinion: i really do feel like you can tell if people aren’t enjoying what they’re writing; quality really does take a nosedive and it can be unenjoyable and awkward for readers to read too! i’ve read things by other writers and thought “oh, wow, this isn’t good or like them” - and they’ve quit jojo fandom in their next few posts. readers can tell. but personally i want other writers to write things they like and have fun. it’s ok if you’re upset your favourite writer has moved on; it’s not okay to harass and be rude directly and vague post and stuff, you know? they should do what’s best for them!

and if part six reignites their love and interest in jojo i’ll be glad to welcome them back and hope some jojo girls get some love!

The Women of Euphoria and Personal Style: Lookbook no.8

Hi to anyone reading,

I hope you’re well considering everything going on! It feels weird to want to talk about fashion or TV shows or red carpets or whatever when 90% of my Google searches are COVID-19 related but there you go. It’s all about trying to power through as normal (minus the social interaction) and pretend the world isn’t ending, right? Queue nervous laughter.

And as if things aren't shitty enough, production of season 2 of Euphoria has been postponed until further notice.

Okay, in the grand scheme of things, having to wait a bit longer for a TV show isn’t catastrophic but it does just about sum up the transition from 2019 to 2020 thus far that after HBO redeemed itself by broadcasting Euphoria in the summer following an ending to Game of Thrones that has made the whole series unrewatchable, the glimmer of hope in me reignited by the prospect of series 2 this year has been quickly dashed. 2021, I’m rooting for you, because it doesn’t seem like things are getting better any time soon, and in all seriousness, I think everyone needs a break from the collective suffering of the last few months.

For me (and undoubtedly for many others if the hundreds of makeup looks and styling videos are anything to go by), Euphoria’s effect on the world of fashion and beauty is unprecedented. I really can’t recall a TV show in living memory that has had as much of an impact on the way young people dress. I mean, this might partially be because the style of the characters already kind of caters to and draws from the target audience but also, aside from Blair Waldorf did anybody really give THAT much of a fuck about what anybody in Gossip Girl wore?

The draw of the styling on Euphoria is that it has something for everyone. The style of each of the main girls, Rue, Kat, Maddy, Jules and Cassie, all of whom I’ve attempted (emphasis on attempted!) to base (emphasis on base!) outfits around, is varied and distinctive but still so current and realistic at the same time. It’s also consistent; even if you don’t own the specific pieces worn by any of them, similar shapes and details reoccur enough in different looks throughout the series that it’s not hard to create an outfit which matches your favourite character’s overall vibe without buying anything new. That’s kinda what I have attempted to do here and without further ado, I’m gonna get on with it! First up:

Jules (Played by Hunter Schafer)

When it comes to whose style is the most experimental, Jules is the obvious answer. A lot of her outfits are what I imagine a cartoonist in the near-distant future will envision their cool girl protagonist wearing. Whilst her ensembles are generally whimsical and girly for the most part, there’s usually a few slightly punk-ish finishing touches thrown in there too be it through chunky shoes or bold makeup or that incredible mesh trench coat she wears in the series finale with the trans symbol on the back which, honestly, deserves a moment of silence.

There are definitely nods to current fashion trends sprinkled throughout her wardrobe too. I'm not going to lie, despite someone at work seemingly thinking it was an insult to tell me I look like someone who does (I still don’t know but this person has a Rick and Morty keyring so I don’t give it too much weight), I’ve never watched any anime. BUT, that being said, given the abundance of anime screenshots posted by all these aesthetic oriented Instagram and Tumblr moodboard accounts, I have a vague idea of what some of the more iconic characters look like and a lot of Jules’ looks seem to be very much modelled after or at least inspired by them. In a way, I see a lot of her looks as a blend between modern “e-girl”, Y2K skater chick (yes, I’m thinking early Avril Lavigne), and 2013 Tumblr “hipster” a la 2014 Joanna Kutcha and Charlie Barker, and though on paper that sounds like a nightmare combination, it works. I know-if that sentence were a Depop description I would’ve just gained 30 followers.

When it comes to my own interpretation of Jules’ style, it’s definitely something I like to channel when I’m putting together a proper OUTFIT outfit. Meaning an outfit I actually put effort into and thus will most likely want to get a good photo in, lol. The way her character dresses is almost quite Christopher Kane in that it’s fresh and unusual but still understated enough that I wouldn’t walk into a room wearing any of these feeling like I’m doing a Rick Owens runway.

I’m not TOO far out of my comfort zone but still at the same time, I’d be trying something new and maybe a little bit more zany than I'm used to. As for noting where any of these pieces are from, only a few have been bought in the last 6 months, but from left to right clockwise I have marked out those that have in case they’re still available (though be wary of the fact that it seems a lot of online clothes stores are still forcing warehouse employees to work in close confines at the moment and so perhaps aren’t operating the most ethically):

I LOVE THIS BITCH.

If I had to choose my favourite character in the show, it would be a very close toss-up between her and Rue, and though I think Rue might just about nab the top spot for her relatability factor, Kat is the girl I want to be or wish that I had been when I was at school. I mean, there’s definitely an argument to be made in that a lot of what she’s doing with her cam work could be seen as a means of validation (Sam Levinson has basically said everyone on the show has some kind of an unhealthy coping mechanism and I would guess due to the circumstances in which her cam girl career was borne and the fact she’s underage, this would be hers) but I do think in other ways we really see Kat reclaim her power and recognise herself for the smart, capable, gorgeous woman that she is. Honestly, the definition of divine feminine energy, and I would completely let Barbie Ferreira/basically Kat if she was also actually 23 dominate me.

Plus! Her! Style! Is! The! Bomb! Definitely the easiest character to base looks around because if I’m totally honest Kat’s energy is pretty much just what I want to emulate in every day life.

It’s either pieces that are typically feminine, cutesy, and even slightly preppy at times drenched in everything grunge OR vice versa where you have something semi-gothic and then add a colourful, more playful touch in there that harks back to the beginning of the series before Kat had began to explore her identity and sexuality and dressed slightly more Forever 21.

I’d say, not yet with my whole chest, that on a good day the outfits I put together when making an effort aren’t too far off something Kat would wear, minus the more overtly BDSM touches; if wearing a ring choker in London is enough to get me a creepy comment from a gross middle aged shopkeeper (because I apparently forfeited my right not to be perved on when I decided to buy a bottle of Oasis summer fruits), then you can only imagine the kind of looks wearing a full-on harness would get in my conservative OAP dominated hometown. Not the most doable right now, especially considering the only time I get out is to work and to go for a run. The chafing I could deal with but the horrified glares of pensioners whose M&S prawn mayo sandwiches I’ve ruined by simply being in their eyesight not so much.

Not gonna lie, I was kind of scared to do Maddy. I’m scared to be posting this, lol! Alexa Demie has played this character for a single season and she’s already one of the most iconic women to grace our screens in years. This is a huge undertaking and I don’t have the bank balance or the body confidence (lmao) to raid IAmGia.

And this is where I want to stress: THESE ARE NOT OUTFIT RECREATIONS. THESE ARE INSPIRED BY. I HAVE ADDED ELEMENTS OF MY OWN STYLE INTO THEM. PLEASE DON’T DRAG ME. I KNOW, I’M NOT ALEXA DEMIE. I WOULD NEVER ASSUME TO BE ALEXA DEMIE. I’M NOT ABOUT TO TAKE THE LORD’S NAME IN VAIN LIKE THAT. So now we’ve got that out the way (wipes bead of sweat off forehead), let’s continue.

Everything about Maddy Perez is extra. She has very much been established as a centre of attention character, and her outfits are a key part of that. They’re daring, they’re hyper-feminine, and they are always glamorous. We’re told that she competed in beauty pageants when she was younger and it’s clear that level of excess and coordination and glitz and all-round-boujeeness wormed its way into her DNA during that time. Even the “depression” outfit she wears to school following Nate becoming violent at the fair is costume-like, a 2019 Bratz doll Off-White street style collaboration.

Do you know how HARD I had to try to be HOT!? For these photos. Alexa Demie is one of those blessed women who doesn’t have to try at all, and that translates into the character completely. At any given moment, Maddy could add or remove one item or clothing and be let straight into the VIP section of a club, and that, honestly, is inspiring to us all in these dark times.

One thing I tried to keep in mind is that she always looks polished and coordinated, I.E the kind of look I would prepare for a night out is something Maddy would wear on an average day. Co-ords and delicate prints seem to be more subtle wardrobe staples along with mesh and PVC and glitter and feathers and fur and basically anything that toes the line between expensive looking and tacky. Yes, I am aware we may toe different sides of that line but please let me stay delusional and believe that’s not the case for 5 minutes. Much appreciated xoxo

I have a complicated relationship with Rue as a character. When I started season 1 of Euphoria, I was like “Oh my god, this girl is the worst. Jesus, she’s so negative and draining and willingly self-destructive and-”

Then, oh my god is this what it’s like to live with me!?

I will say, to my own credit, that I don’t think I've ever been quite as hard to deal with as Rue (a lot less smashing stuff up and a lot more moping), and to HER credit, by the end of the season we come to realise she’s been through a fucking lot and so it makes sense, but wow. I don’t think I have ever seen a teen show handle drug abuse and mental illness in such a brutal way. It’s quite a talent to be able to show a character cause so much pain to those closest to them and yet do so through a sympathetic lens. And issues aside, whether it’s her occasional social awkwardness or her relationship with her family or watching bloody Love Island (still quite surreal to see Zendaya Coleman witnessing the Amy/Curtis drama unfold), Rue is just my favourite character to follow.

Her style, though. AH. The thing is, I can hardly drag it, because it’s pretty much what I wear when I’m moping about the house-or just any time I can get away with it to be honest-to a T. I want to stay true to character, but that being said, creating a “Seth Rogen”-esque outfit that’s worth posting on here is difficult. So, with the same kind of artistic license that had me wearing berets whilst cosplaying Maddy Perez, here is the best I could do:

I know, I know, it’s probably too much colour and jewellery for Rue but this is as toned down as I could do and I tried to stick with the key silhouettes we see from her throughout the season; I mean, I can’t see her wearing leopard print but the structure of the coat in outfit 1 is very similar to the one seen in Shook Ones pt.II. I think the bottom line when it comes to her character is keeping things effortless and not overly-feminine; you want to mix street style, athleisure and your dad’s wardrobe favourites like your life depends on it. Plus messy hair and smudged makeup, both of which I’ve already got down according to the completely inappropriate number of customers who’ve asked if I'm tired at work so thanks for that guys, and glitter tears. Lots and lots of glitter tears.

Cassie (Played by Sydney Sweeney)

Style-wise, Cassie is a hard one. When putting outfits for her character together, I found myself gravitating towards a direction that’s probably a bit too bohemian for her character, under the guidance of loose terms like “girl-next-door”, “floaty”, “delicate”, you get the idea. She definitely feels the least fully-realised in terms of all the main girls and I think it’s fair to say she’s probably got a bit of self-discovery to do. Most of her storylines in the season are dictated by her relationships to other people: McKay, Maddy, Lexie, her parents and so on.

Nevertheless, I tried to stick to the airier, more traditionally “pretty” pieces whilst still channelling the confidence and ease with which Cassie pulls them off. Sydney Sweeney has the most incredible figure and I feel like whilst the clothes the on-set stylists put her in flatter that and don’t hide anything, they’re still the focus. It doesn’t feel like there’s anything more inherently sexual about her character than any of the other main female characters despite the way the men within the narrative view her, and I think it’s a testament to the the wardrobe department that to me she still gives off big modern Disney princess energy and a certain innocence even whilst we hear her being continuously sexualised by her male peers.

If anything, Cassie probably dresses the most like an actual teenage girl, and her style, whilst less distinctive than the other girls, still does a good job of capturing the youth and romanticism of her character.

The colour palette of her wardrobe tends to be quite neutral, with a couple of pastels thrown in there, and if there are any details, they’re usually quite dainty. Similarly, Cassie is probably the least experimental when it comes to her makeup; we don’t really see her wearing the bold eyeshadows or liners or gems like the other girls at any point.

SO, I guess that’s it for my Euphoria lookbook! As always, let me know what you think (nicely pls, my ego is fragile lol) and I’d love to hear your opinions on the show too! I really haven’t got this excited over a new TV show in ages and I just think that it does everything so excellently-from the writing to the cinematography to the soundtrack, you can tell each element is so carefully and purposefully constructed. It immerses you into the dramatic highs and lows of being a teenager in a way I haven’t seen since UK Skins and I never thought I’d watch a show which held a candle to that.

In terms of what I’m doing next, I’ve got a very delayed fashion week masterpost in the works as well as something to fill the Met Gala shaped hole in our lives, which I hope to get up over the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, if you read to the end, THANK YOU! And I hope you’re staying safe and AT HOME where possible. I know this self-isolation feels never-ending and if I’m honest, it is having a hugely negative effect on my mental health, but NHS staff are doing their very best with the shitty recourses they have and whilst it seems that our government have thrown workers under the bus once again, we can all do our bit to combat that by slowing the spread of the virus. Also thank you to anybody who’s out working now in such a scary and uncertain time! I work at a grocery store and can say from experience that the best way to show this thanks is just through kindness and following employee’s instructions without giving them grief for it. Everyone’s scared right now and the best we can do is pull together and look out for each other, as difficult as that might seem at times.

Remember this post?

Hey. I’m back and this time I’m ready to talk about the Plot™. Let’s talk about everything Sonic Adventure 3 was supposed to be.

Before I get ahead of myself, let me first introduce this concept with the fact that Sonic Unleashed (2008) was meant to be Sonic Adventure 3, but after heavy criticisms toward the franchise after the flop of Sonic 06 it was scrapped and changed. Sonic Adventure 3 was also confirmed to originally have Shadow and Knuckles, meaning that the plot I’m about to explore has to have important ties to those two characters specifically.

Now then, that doesn’t mean that ideas from the original Sonic Adventure 3 concept weren’t repurposed for Unleashed. As a writer and an avid Sonic lore fan for ~18 years, I’ve taken a good look at Unleashed’s plot and singled out certain elements of the story that seemed like they got washed down to fit the new narrative of Unleashed. It goes as follows:

the corruption of a character important to the main plot (later became the Werehog)

an amnesiac Guardian with forgotten knowledge of the Chaos Emeralds (later became Chip)

geographical locations of importance relating to the lore of the Master and Chaos Emeralds (later became the Gaia Temples)

a dark, ancient power that happened well before the events of Perfect Chaos ~4,000 years ago in SA1 (later became Dark Gaia)

some sort of importance pertaining to the sun and moon

Let’s start with how the plot probably would have involved Knuckles and Shadow. Knuckles is the well-known Guardian of the Master Emerald- but also just as clueless as how he came into the position in the first place, as originally stated in a now-archived character profile on Knuckles. The plot of Unleashed was already heavily centered around the Chaos Emeralds, so it’s safe to say the original SA3 plot had similar ties with the Master Emerald.

Shadow’s is... a little trickier. Shadow was originally meant to die at the end of SA2 but was brought back with various contradicting backstories due to becoming an instant fan favorite. Chances are, SA3 was going to go more in depth on Shadow’s creation and life aboard the ARK- along with how he survived the fall from space at the end of SA2. I’ll go into more detail about how else he would have been important to a possible plot later.

Now then, let’s start analyzing the parts that actually made it into Unleashed. Corruption, Amnesiac Guardian of the Emeralds, temples across the world, an ancient and powerful force that threatens modern day, and the symbolism of the sun and moon.

Sonic, the main character of Unleashed and the franchise itself, is corrupted to where he’s unable to use his normal powers half the time. It takes a toll on his character as he’s, in a way, lost his sense of self and is desperate to restore his original self and powers- eventually he comes to terms with the new abilities of the Werehog, which is an important plot point as well.

Chances are, Sonic wasn’t originally supposed to be corrupted. With several important, reoccuring characters to choose from it’s understandable that Sonic got the short end of the stick when the cast got severely downgraded to Sonic, Tails, and Amy. So, who else with significant importance to the plot was supposed to get corrupted?

Chip. Or, for lack of SA3 plot, whoever was originally designed to be the amnesiac Guardian introduced in the game. A lot of context clues can be pulled from Chip’s character and story as a whole from being happy-go-lucky and interested in the wonders of the world they can’t remember to the importance of Adabat with how it was that specific temple that helped him recall his origins. Seeing that Adabat is also infested with ruins, it’s safe to say that something pretty terrible must have happened there at some point in the past. The originally scripted Guardian must have come from Adabat and, lilke Chip, was supposed to recall their past at it’s temple.

Speaking of Temples

Unleashed introduces Gaia Temples- large monuments meant to reignite Chaos Emeralds should they ever be damaged. These temples must have had greater significance in SA3, as in Unleashed they’re chopped down to all have the same interior and cutscene. My theory is that each Chaos Emerald belongs to a specific continent, but not neccessarily in the order that they’re restored in in Unleashed. Chances are, these temples were originally meant to be Master Shrines that were once a part of an ancient cycle the Master Emerald followed- I know this might seem like a stretch but hear me out:

In this screenshot of a flashback from SA1, we see the Chaos Emeralds aligned in a rainbow pattern- White, Purple, Violet, Cyan, Green, Yellow, and Red. While this can easily be shrugged off as a design choice, it would be more interesting and plot enriching if a cycle of sorts were introduced- such as the Master Emerald relocating whenever it’s damaged (which would explain why it’s suddenly in... Africa (?) in SA2- it would be following the pattern of Angel Island being the White Shrine and the Purple Emerald being the Sandopolis/Mazuri/Egyptian shrine. The Master Emerald isn’t necessarily at a Shrine when it’s introduced in SA2, but try and keep your mind open about this- in Unleashed the main narrative is restoring the Chaos Emeralds... what if it was originally about restoring shrines?

In SA1, Tikal explicitly mentions the fact that during the Echidna conquer the Knuckles Clan had been attacking the holy places of other countries- could she have been hinting at the destruction of Master Shrines to break the cycle and keep the Master Emerald and all of the Chaos Emeralds in their territory to give their clan unlimited power? It would explain why the Chaos Emeralds seem to ‘randomly’ scatter after being used as well- their resting places have been destroyed and they’re lost without a home. A fully functioning shrine with all the Emeralds would give unfathomable power, as seen in S3&K with Hyper Sonic- a form that Sonic can tap into when balance is restored among the emeralds.

Now, we all know that classifications do really well when introduced in Young Adult fiction (See H*gwarts Houses, Greek/Roman Demigods, Owl House Covens, etc.) and it can be easily implemented in the Sonic franchise as well. Not only with the Master cycle, but with the Chaos Emeralds themselves. There’s been a few confirmed powers linked to the emeralds such as Chaos Control and Chaos Blast- Chaos Control allows users to warp between space and time as seen in SA2 and 06 while Chaos Blast- introduced in Shadow the Hedgehog (2005)- allows users to release a large burst of power as a defense/attack mechanism. Chaos Blast is linked with a fiery red which could link it to the red Chaos Emerald. Red symbolizes passion and strength; it’s color is usually meant to warn us of danger, meaning it’s linked to both our primal fears and the instincts we’ve developed to survive over years of evolution. I’d like to introduce the concept of these powers being blocked if their emerald is damaged in any way- meaning Chaos Blast wouldn’t be accessible via other emeralds if the red one was damaged. I’d also like to link these emeralds to their specific Guardian, meaning that if their Guardian is damaged in a way that would prevent the cycle to continue, the emerald could die out as well. If you’re wondering if these Guardians would exist in the game then have no fear becuase they WOULD and 85% of them are characters we already know and love (I will NOT introduce all of them because I Do Not Wish To Spoil It, but this is definitely where Shadow would play a bigger part like I mentioned before). There is, one, however that we don’t know and that’s because they were reimagined as Chip for Unleashed- the Guardian for the green Chaos Emerald from Adabat. (I ended up making a fan character for this role as you can see in the last installment, but it would be lame of me to force an OC into the game if given the opportunity).

Let’s move on before I go any further into crazy fan-theories. A main villain would need to be introduced- something that Dr. Robotnik/Eggman would want to get his hands on in hopes of conquering the world (a trope we’ve seen before with Chaos in SA1, the Ultimate Lifeform in SA2, and Dark Gaia in Sonic Unleashed). Chaos was, essentially, the first domino to fall over in the pattern introduced in the Adventure games. They were only a small speck in the bigger picture though, as we see that Gerald Robotnik must have taken some inspiration from the stories and depictions of Chaos and created the BioLizard in hopes of harnessing the energy in the Chaos Emeralds. He would later get the idea from an unknown source to instead create a synthetic Hedgehog user, possibly from studying the well-known mural in S3&K’s Hidden Palace Zone:

But there’s something else in this mural we all seem to be forgetting- what is the big figure holding (possibly) the Master Emerald? Well :)) I’m glad you asked. I believe this was originally meant to be the main antagonist of SA3 who eventually became Dark Gaia in Sonic Unleashed. Some sort of powerful being that had some sort of forgotten knowledge pertaining to the Master Emerald.

But there’s more. The Hedgehog-like creature is surrounded by a golden aura, but it isn’t the only one. Behind the creature are 6 smaller aura’s seeming to try and attack the antagonist while it’s preoccupied with the hedgehog. This could depict seven Chaos Guardians using the energy of the restored shrines, all seven Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald to become Hyper Versions of themselves in order to defeat this powerful being. So, who could it be? If Chaos introduced the BioLizard and they were both defeated, what could possibly be hinted at in SA2 that would introduce the main villain for SA3?

Well.

OKAY OKAY HEAR ME OUT

We know very little about King Boom Boo and he seems to be a pretty unforgettable character for a reason. There’s something about him that must have been important for a future game. Granted, a lot of this levels design is taken from Sandopolis-

(See the light/dark triggered ghosts from Sandopolis in S3&K vs. King Boom Boo being weakened by light in SA2; see also Egg Golem from S3&K and SA2)

-which also leads us to the Lava Reef zone which then leads to the Hidden Palace Zone- the location where the Master Emerald is first introduced (assuming that these are all the same place) . Could it be possible that the Hidden Palace Zone was once the original and only location of the Chaos Emeralds? What could have possibly happened to that kingdom for it to be buried and haunted for an unknown amount of time? Personally, I believe King Boom Boo committed the ultimate taboo of the Sonic universe and tried to harness the power of all the emeralds to power his kingdom- much like the Echidna’s tried to do and were ultimately punished for as well. History has a funny way of repeating itself like that. Only this time, in modern day, the power hungry monster is Eggman who’s been trying harness the various ultimate powers the Chaos Emeralds can grant. In SA2, we’re also introduced to the concept of a synthetic Chaos Emerald- a fake that can grant a user the link to use other Chaos Powers mentioned previously, but not an infinite power source like a genuine Chaos Emerald. It wouldn’t surprise me if this concept was meant to be further explored in SA3 and present multiple dilemmas for it’s plot. Nevertheless, there’s something about King Boom Boo and the concept of making a deal with the devil that is rather captivating.

Finally, let’s talk about the sun/moon aspects in Unleashed. Obviously these symbolize dark and light, good and evil, yin and yang. There will always be something to fight for and something to fight against. SA3 was meant to have the battle to end all battles. Sonic and six other powerful beings were supposed to work together to fight the greater evil and restore peace and balance until the next Eggman scheme. There was supposed to be something important that would happen once peace was restored. Things were supposed to go back to the way they were before the Echidna’s began conquering and pillaging the world ~4,000 years ago.

Now, obviously I’m ignoring the lore of a LOT of games (modern Sonic games made after SA2, most notably) and this is because there is a hidden plot among these few games. Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) is nine sonic games in a trenchcoat and was only made because of the fandom loving Shadow. Sonic 06 has always been a standalone game from the original series, The Chronicles series aren’t even made by the same people from the Adventure series, etc. Although, I would still like see characters from these games make an appearance.

Anyways... did I do it? Is Mr. SEGA gonna bust into my house and kill me for knowing too much or will he kiss me on the lips soft and smooth and let me turn this concept into a reality? The choice is yours.

Sooo It’s been a while…

Man this place got dusty while I’ve been gone...oops. But I am here and I am ready to dust off this blog because despite 2020’s best efforts I am alive and well...ish. Okay...I’m as well as can be expected when a year looks Murphy’s Law in the eye and says “Hold my beer.” Anyway, the most important thing is I am still the same lesbrarian with the same passion for finding the queer rep on library shelves where it may be hard to find otherwise. It’s just been very hard to sit down and read and then take the time to write up the reviews the way I wanted to, so as many a thing in my life I put too much pressure on myself until I stopped doing the thing all together, well at least until recently when the universe said, “Hey, remember how much you love reading and then screaming about the books you read and that passion project you brushed under about 50 rugs last year...yeah, you should go back to that little passion baby and give it some love. Oh, you have too many other things to do and too many YouTube videos to watch and too many fictional lesbians to obsess over on Tumblr...then how about I take away all other forms of entertainment and plunge you into the dark ages for days and force you to do nothing but read...no, you don’t get a choice...kisses!”

Sooo...yeah. In case you all aren’t aware I live in the lovely state of Oklahoma and we got utterly railed by an ice storm. Just one more thing that 2020 decided was just fine and totally appropriate for us in this year of...occurrences. So there I am 2 days into a week-long ice storm, but hey my house is weathering well...we’ve still got heat and power and internet, so rage on storm, I don’t care. I’m just chilling in my little desk nook neck deep in my newest obsession, Jamie and Dani from The Haunting of Bly Manor, wrapped in a sensible blanket and enjoying that I have a job that pays me not to go to work when the weather is shit when suddenly I am plunged into darkness! Computer - Dark! Room - Dark! Jamie and Dani being adorable and tragic on my YouTube screen - Gone! Pleasant warm air blowing behind me from the heater - Gone! Suffice it to say I was not a happy camper. My happy little hyper fixated fangirling bubble had been very rudely popped and now I was getting cold and cranky, but it was just before midnight so I thought it’s fine I’ll go to bed and maybe we’ll have power back in the morning. Oh, how naive I had been, fair reader!

I awake to a freezing house and still not even a sniff of power being restored. I am yet again not having to work during this trying time (Thank you library for being the best job ever!) but I am faced with the conundrum of what do I do with my time. No internet, no data on my phone and very limited power on said phone even if I had data and no way to charge it. I really have very few options. But luckily because of the lack of central heat in the house for many a year until recently we have a gas-powered fireplace insert that only needs a light to get going in a power outage. So at least we weren’t completely without heat. And as far as light goes...we basically own a camping good store because one of us has an obsession with hiking and climbing mountains, but this isn’t about that. Essentially I have heat and I have light and...I have three library books I checked out because I was determined to get my ass reading again not knowing this newest apocalypse was coming.

Long story short I am gonna jump start this blog back to life with a series of reviews in the same style as what I did before my long hiatus, but these are all the...Books I Read In the Dark!!!

That sounds a lot more ominous than it was. Mainly it was me curled up on the couch or in front of the fireplace with my nose in a book and a blanket over my shoulders. As one of my best friends insists on describing it, “it’s like you were going back to your pioneer roots reading by candle light with your shawl and everything”, though those aren’t her exact words she has a much better power of description and is much more...irish. We were only without power for 2 ½ days but in that time I managed to reignite the voracious reader I once was and inhaled 4 books. So stay tuned for the four posts to follow this one that will outline my whirlwind 2 ½ days of classic escapism while I couldn’t do much else but read by literal (electric) lantern light.

It had been an adjustment the last couple of months. From that point onward, the Hanamura siblings were figuring out their new "normal" and what that looked like for their family. Chiro had moved into the Hyper Force's base while continuing his training and finding he was thriving fully immersed in it. There wasn't a hard time limit, he had all the time he wanted to focus. His mind and body were challenged in ways it had never been before. Mila could see the change in his confidence. While Chiro never lacked it, it only grew and the change was a welcomed one. The light in his eyes, the way he carried himself… although, not to say everything had been perfect. Mila found herself not sure what to do with herself a lot of the time. Refurbishing the store had been a massive project in and of itself. It was up and running now but that had been an… experience to say the least. "WHAT THE FU-" Mila covered her mouth, bouncing in place anxiously as she looked at the damage to her store. She had managed to convince Gibson to let her leave the base just to stretch her legs, provided someone was with her. And checking in on the store, she decided it was a massive mistake. She groaned as she looked at the large bay glass window that made up her store front. "Oh nooooo…" Already the numbers were tallying up in her head. The broken pots, the display cases that kept flowers fresh, all of it had been so pricey when her parents had bought them. She had gotten good at keeping them running but broken beyond repair? Her heart beat faster, as she whined a bit, bouncing even more anxiously. "Holy Shuggazoom…" How much was this going to cost to fix? Otto popped up beside her, his hand turning into a wrench. "Just leave it to me! I'll have you back up and running in no time!" "Uh, let us actually help, Mila. All of us." Nova cringed. "We all kinda feel responsible that you got caught up in this." "Do I have to chip in any money?" "No!" Mila gave a shaky thumbs up before her knees buckled under her anew as Chiro caught her arms. "Okay, that's enough sticker shock. Back to base." She looked back at the store, shaking her head. "Hnnnn, this is gonna be normal, isn't it?" She mumbled. Chiro grimaced, rubbing her shoulder. "We'll try. Now, come on, let's get you back home." "And you moved out… Oh gosh you are moving out…"

And so, Arc 2 begins with a bang!

This actually originally was chapter 13 but I wanted a bit of breathing room and to explore the aftermath of Arc 1, hence last weeks chapter. This chapter, was one of my favorites that I had written back in December actually. I honestly, had been wracking my brain over how Mila was going to react to this one when I got to it and when it happened it just flowed. Chiro got distracted by a pretty lady. Breaking the warp barrier for faster-than-light travel Astrophysicist at Göttingen University discovers new theoretical hyper-fast soliton solutions If travel to distant stars within an individual's lifetime is going to be possible, a means of faster-than-light propulsion will have to be found. To date, even recent research about superluminal (faster-than-light) transport based on Einstein's theory of general relativity would require vast amounts of hypothetical particles and states of matter that have "exotic" physical properties such as negative energy density. This type of matter either cannot currently be found or cannot be manufactured in viable quantities. In contrast, new research carried out at the University of Göttingen gets around this problem by constructing a new class of hyper-fast 'solitons' using sources with only positive energies that can enable travel at any speed. This reignites debate about the possibility of faster-than-light travel based on conventional physics. The research is published in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity. The author of the paper, Dr Erik Lentz, analysed existing research and discovered gaps in previous 'warp drive' studies. Lentz noticed that there existed yet-to-be explored configurations of space-time curvature organized into 'solitons' that have the potential to solve the puzzle while being physically viable. A soliton - in this context also informally referred to as a 'warp bubble' - is a compact wave that maintains its shape and moves at constant velocity. Lentz derived the Einstein equations for unexplored soliton configurations (where the space-time metric's shift vector components obey a hyperbolic relation), finding that the altered space-time geometries could be formed in a way that worked even with conventional energy sources. In essence, the new method uses the very structure of space and time arranged in a soliton to provide a solution to faster-than-light travel, which - unlike other research - would only need sources with positive energy densities. No "exotic" negative energy densities needed. If sufficient energy could be generated, the equations used in this research would allow space travel to Proxima Centauri, our nearest star, and back to Earth in years instead of decades or millennia. That means an individual could travel there and back within their lifetime. In comparison, the current rocket technology would take more than 50,000 years for a one-way journey. In addition, the solitons (warp bubbles) were configured to contain a region with minimal tidal forces such that the passing of time inside the soliton matches the time outside: an ideal environment for a spacecraft. This means there would not be the complications of the so-called "twin paradox" whereby one twin travelling near the speed of light would age much more slowly than the other twin who stayed on Earth: in fact, according to the recent equations both twins would be the same age when reunited. "This work has moved the problem of faster-than-light travel one step away from theoretical research in fundamental physics and closer to engineering. The next step is to figure out how to bring down the astronomical amount of energy needed to within the range of today's technologies, such as a large modern nuclear fission power plant. Then we can talk about building the first prototypes," says Lentz. Currently, the amount of energy required for this new type of space propulsion drive is still immense. Lentz explains, "The energy required for this drive travelling at light speed encompassing a spacecraft of 100 meters in radius is on the order of hundreds of times of the mass of the planet Jupiter. The energy savings would need to be drastic, of approximately 30 orders of magnitude to be in range of modern nuclear fission reactors." He goes on to say: "Fortunately, several energy-saving mechanisms have been proposed in earlier research that can potentially lower the energy required by nearly 60 orders of magnitude." Lentz is currently in the early-stages of determining if these methods can be modified, or if new mechanisms are needed to bring the energy required down to what is currently possible. I was re-watching Jenna Moreci's video (https://youtu.be/iLOhJEFNw0M) mentioning bad love interest pet peeves, and I was thinking about how even though I too hate love interests who are just love interests, I also love ingenue characters. I love himbos and pure-hearted maidens. Though, one of my biggest pet peeves is still "female characters primarily defined by their crush (on some guy)".

I find it so strange that even though I ship IchiRuki hard, I should technically be all about IchiHime, yet I was never interested in Orihime. Setting aside the fact that Rukia being so awesome is really distracting, Orihime is the ingenue archetype that I usually love. So what gives?

I mean, if my NaruHina ship proves anything, it's that I don't care about how much time characters spend together, as long as they share the same core ideals/values. So even if Orihime wasn't present for a lot of Ichigo's battles, nor the mental focus of their battles, then why wasn't I on the IchiHime ship? Why didn't I even give Orihime a second thought?

It's not like Kubo didn't try hard to force IchiHime either. He even did the cliche "they lock eyes slightly longer than normal, during character introductions into the series". But that never effected me, so I don't need the ineffectiveness of that trope explained to me for this ship. That whole Hueco Mundo rescue was even a blatant attempt to repeat what had worked with endearing Rukia's importance and bond with Ichigo, to the reader. And yet, it still wasn't effective.

Then I remembered the prototype draft that Kubo originally had for Bleach. That first mission of Ichigo's was all about saving Orihime, and Rukia was just a facilitator. Sure, Orihime died, but the end of the chapter set-up a story pattern where ALL of Ichigo's shinigami adventures, every incident, would always involve Orihime and Rukia. Because Orihime was dead, she was now a ghost, who would have been able to share in Ichigo's secret conflicts with Hollows, that he wouldn't have been able to talk about to anyone else...besides Rukia, who would probably be relegated to practical facilitator of powers. Any other series would have had Orihime, being the hyper feminine childhood friend with a crush on protag-kun, serving as the emotional confidant, then turn Rukia into the 2-dimensional, no-nonsense, fight-focused, semi-mentor, who would only be able to express emotional attachment to Ichigo through annoying tsundere shenanigans. Rukia would have been there more to service the plot, more than emotional endearment in the story. At least, that's how these tropes and archetypes usually go in other Shonen series. And I like those Shonen series. Even Dog Days fulfills those criteria, and I ship those canon ships! Hyper feminine ingenue and all! If Bleach had kept to the cliches, the cliche ships would have worked too.

But Bleach didn't stick to the cliches, and I'm glad, because it made Rukia so much more dimensional and interesting, and the bond with Ichigo equally as refreshing. I mean, I understand why it happened. Any editor would have looked at the end of the original Bleach draft, and the future story it was setting up, and would have said "these 2 female ghost girls both being Ichigo's confidant in Hollow matters are redundant; merge their roles into one character". Clearly, this was a decision forced onto Kubo, because his draft demonstrated that he originally wanted to do the cliche tropes and cliche ships, by separating the emotional confidant into the hyper feminine love interest, away from the pragmatic, plot-facilitating mentor character.

Imagine, when King Fisher attacked during their cemetery visit, Orihime had the conversation with Ichigo about not knowing how to breach the topic of his late mother "without it getting dirty. So I'll wait. When you want to talk, when you think it's okay to talk....talk to me" (Rukia, chapter 20). Imagine, Orihime instead of Rukia, being the one who was arrested and taken back to Soul Society, somehow taking Ichigo's place, for punishment, in order to save him, just like Ichigo's mother had saved him and died in his stead, repeating the tragedy and reigniting the guilt that had been gnawing at him. Imagine Orihime always just hanging around on the sidelines of battles, not even doing anything other than show the audience that Ichigo had very present and very constant emotional support through her, at every battle; then Orihime would have had all the intimate experience with all of Ichigo's struggles, enough be able to say "Even if no one in the world believes in you...Stick out your chest and scream in defiance!! The Ichigo I know...is that kind of man!!!" (Rukia, chapter 196). Even during one of those early Hollow hunts, when Ichigo decided he was going to save souls from Hollows, even though he was against becoming a Shinigami...Imagine Orihime being there just to reaffirm Ichigo's solidified emotional resolve, even for a moment, after settling the dispute with Rukia. Any other Shonen series would have pulled that exact cliche hackneyed stuff. But hell, even I have to admit that maybe it became a trope because it was effective. All these key moments in Ichigo's character, his development, gaining that emotional Strength of his...If Orihime was much more involved in all those moments as they happened to Ichigo, then maybe I'd be an IchiHime shipper instead of an IchiRuki shipper. ...Then again, if Orihime was allowed to stay a ghost so she could literally shadow Ichigo through all his emotional trials, then Rukia would've become the redundant character and been reduced to a flat, less interesting, purely plot functional role. And that would have been nothing new; nothing interesting. What we did get instead was a much more interesting character in Rukia and a much more refreshing character dynamic with Ichigo, different from most other Shonen series beforehand.

It's just too bad that Kubo really really really didn't want to do that, and just kept awkwardly pushing for the more cliche pairings, whenever he could, especially at the very end.

9:18 PM 9/13/2020 Why did I just ramble on about this? I don't even remember Bleach all that much by now! And I didn't even care enough to finish the series, after Rukia appeared less often. Well, I may not be able to speak about the series as a complete work in detail, but I can explain the thoughts I had about the direction it was showing me it was going. And I guess that's all I really wanted to ramble about. At least to help me understand myself.

Ahahahaha thank you, I am notoriously bad at predicting these things as y’all are clearly picking up 😂

That said, ch 9 has been slightly delayed for several reasons mostly centering around a) I wanted to reconfigure some plot stuff for the end, b) I was working on the first three ch of my prompt-a-thon fic which was actually a blessing bc c) I fell into a p bad writing slump for a minute that the PAT fic ended up snapping me out of so huzzah!

Fret not though, I have worked out enough of my plotting stuff, reworked a solid and respectably detailed outline for ch 9 and have started drafting again so things are in progress! I don’t have a timeline because I’m not trying to rush it this close to the end BUT as a consolation prize, I offer an unedited snippet under the cut

The boom of the gunshot echos around the clearing, shockingly loud and reigniting the ringing that had only just started to fade in Beth's ears.

"Shouldn't I have some kind of ear or eye protection?" she'd asked when they started. It hadn't occurred to her to ask the first time they'd done this, but she'd done her own research—well, watched some YouTube videos—since then.

"You plan on havin' ear muffs and goggles every time you're in a situation you might need to shoot? No?" Rio had said when she shook her head. "Then, you should probably get used to not using 'em."

Beth squints at the target, an ominous outline of a person-shaped space overlaid on a bullseye pinned to the side of a dilapidated barn. She viscerally hates the reminder of what she's practicing to do, but when she'd said as much, he’d given her a long look.

"Lyin’ to yourself about why you're here won't help anyone, darlin'.”

She finds the new hole in the paper up and to the left—well outside the outline—one of at least six shots clustered in that corner of the page. It's almost like she was aiming there instead of the center. There was another cluster in the lower left, and then a handful more to the far right from when she'd tried to overcorrect her aim. Very few were inside the target shape itself.

Steady stance, firm but not locked arms, both eyes open, pull the trigger on exhale.

Beth fires again, rocking back on recoil but not staggering. She lowers the gun and peers at the target.

"It's still left," she says, huffing out a frustrated breath that blows her bangs off her forehead. "What am I doing wrong?"

"Flinchin' ahead of time," Rio says without hesitation, but he sounds preoccupied, and when she looks over, he's leaned up against the side of his car on his phone. Again. It had been buzzing regularly the whole ride out of the city, and once they'd arrived, after giving Beth a rundown of the basics, Rio'd been texting nearly constantly.

"Hey!"

He looks up and eyeballs the target. "Or yankin' the trigger, not squeezin' it. 'S why your shit's going left."

Beth frowns, studying the sheet of paper, then the gun. "How do I stop doing that?"

"Practice, go slow."

She huffs out a frustrated breath. "I am."

"Slower," he says, and she can tell without looking from the rote way he says it, he's back on his phone.

She takes her stance, wiggling a little, digging the balls of her feet into the soft ground. When she raises the gun, she forces herself to keep both her eyes open, to let them adjust down the sight. She takes a slow breath, lets it out, and fires. She still jerks back, but the shot goes much closer to the center, nearly right on the edge of the outline.

"Did you—" But when Beth turns to Rio, her excitement at the improvement, however mild, fizzles when she sees he's still on his phone and not paying attention. "I'm sorry, am I keeping you from something important?"

He looks up at that, eyebrow raised, and Beth can't tell if he's saying yes, or is irritated at how she's acting about it, or both. Probably both, now that she thinks about it, but too damn bad. If he wants her to handle things, she needs to be ready for it.

"I thought you were going to teach me," she says, raising an eyebrow right back at him. He's not the only one getting annoyed.

"What you think this is, then?"

"Well, you're not doing a good job." Beth gestures at the target, and all the bullet holes sprinkled around the edges of the page.

"A'ight," Rio says, pushing off the car and sliding his phone into his back pocket. "Show me what you got."

Beth represses a sigh—she has been, he’s just not paying attention—and turns back to the target, taking her stance.

But she can't suppress her sharp inhale when Rio slots himself in behind her, his chest against her back, his arms coming up to bracket hers, and his hands wrapping around hers.

"Feel me breathing, ma?" He asks, his breath warm against her ear, and she shivers, making him laugh softly. "Close your eyes."

She does, and oh, it's like cutting off one sense makes her hyper-aware of the others. Her entire world narrows down to every point of contact between them, the feel of him warm and sure pressed up behind her. She lets out a shaky inhale, and he laughs again, a smug sort of pleasure threading through it, which only compounds the issue. Beth's pulse pounds like a bass drum.

"You gotta concentrate, yeah?"

"I'm trying," she retorts.

"Breathe in," he says, taking an exaggeratedly deep breath, his chest pushing against her back, and she inhales, matching his speed.

"Breathe out," he says, letting out a slow, controlled exhale, fluttering her hair and tickling her ear, her neck, her cheek. Forcing herself to stay focused, Beth holds steady and breathes with him.

His satisfied hum of approval arrows straight through her, settling low in her belly where the heat that doesn't ever seem to fully dissipate is pooling and turning molten.

"Again."
