#I’m not a prolific or good fic writer (or even a good writer in general) but I put my heart and soul into the garbage that I write
ao3commentoftheday · 5 months
Note
This is my reluctant fandom rivalry story. It’s long. Please bear with me.
A couple years ago I got into a major (read: very active) fandom. I wrote a few fics, then began what would become my longest WIP to date. That WIP generated a lot of interest, and as the smut escalated, I started getting more engagement with a fic than ever before – especially after posting a scene in which the characters finally hook up, in a very kinky and unexpected way. While working on this story I was following the work of other writers, and at one point a certain author who is pretty prolific and well-established in the fandom posted a finale to a work that they hadn’t updated in a long time.
Seeing as how this work featured an uncommon ship dynamic for the pairing I write for – which my WIP also featured – I was interested to read this particular work. Then, when I got to their newly-added finale, I was astonished: it featured a scene that very closely paralleled the hook-up smut scene that I had just posted about a week or so prior, to a startling degree of similarity. So here were two characters in a very specific relationship dynamic—ages differing from canon—who were hooking up in the exact same way as my characters (also of this age/dynamic), down to the very same environment and scene context – the same uncommon blocking; same uncommon smut scenario – in a way that I’d thought was highly original when I wrote it (I haven’t seen anything like it before or since), and posted very close behind when mine was posted! The author even went out of their way to say that they’d actually written that scene “months ago,” and were only just getting around to finally posting it… /: *suspicious eyes*
You can see where I’m going with this.
While not exactly plagiarism per se, that author received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from their many followers, while my chapter received a comparably modest response (though still very positive by my own standards, being so new to the fandom). I also worry that a good number of shared readers had encountered the other [popular] story, first, then caught up with mine after, only to wonder if I had copied the other author (unless they bothered to go into “chapter index” -> “full page index” to confirm publication dates, it would’ve looked like mine came after once I posted the next chapter).
I decided not to confront them about it, though. There was no way I could prove that it wasn’t “parallel thinking,” even if it would make for a very odd coincidence. The wording was not the same, but it was structured very closely to what I’d written, including certain spicy details. I didn’t want to stir up drama in a new fandom, especially with such a popular author, lest I inadvertently alienate myself.
But here’s the thing: I decided to just be flattered that my work had "inspired" theirs, and I tried to get past any lingering resentment by befriending them. Left kudos and the occasional nice comment on their work. Followed them on tumblr. Liked/RB’d their posts. But they steadfastly ignored me completely, for reasons I can only guess at. We have many common mutuals and they never like/reblog even my most popular posts (though these must cross their dash), though they will promote similar posts by anyone else.
Over a year later, I’ve continued to follow this author’s work, keeping an eye out for other “coincidences” (though it’d be very ballsy of them to "borrow" from me again, since my work is more widely read now). Meanwhile, I have risen in popularity, myself, and while still not as popular as that author, I’m very proud of my own contributions to the fandom, and feel that my writing is a lot stronger than theirs. So I really shouldn’t let it get to me, but seeing them around all the time, being praised for their mid-level works and interacting with so many of my mutuals (while giving me the cold shoulder) still rankles me. Recently they even posted something about showing common courtesy by not stealing others' work in fandom, etc. that really rubbed me the wrong way. I stewed over it for way longer than is healthy.
Any advice on how to navigate this one?
I want to enjoy my time in this fandom, but their ubiquitous, icy presence and my own lingering paranoia casts a pall over my experience.
This is one of those situations where you either need to confront them directly and let the chips fall where they may or you need to block them on every platform you share and pretend they don't exist.
You can't seem to get past what happened in the past, but you're also not talking it out with them. That means that you're stuck where you are until something changes. That thing is either messaging them directly or removing them from view.
Do not write a callout post. From what you've outlined here, you have a suspicion with no solid facts one way or the other. Writing a public post will just create fandom drama and having been tangentially involved in that before, do. not. recommend.
Personally, I think you need to evict them from your mind because they've been living there rent free for too long. But that's just my opinion. What do the rest of you think?
You can also find this ask mirrored over on Dreamwidth.

Do you think fandom can be sexist towards female characters?
I see the Jegulus fandom wanting to write Lily completely out of the picture and wolfstar people generally hate Tonks.
oof. i have…a very rambly, very long answer to this bc i don’t think it’s a simple yes/no so i’ll put this under a cut for people to skip if they wanna, yeah?
so, straight off the bat, im not a fan of using pejorative labels for writers in general but particularly for fanfic authors. for one, we don’t know who’s writing behind the screen + what their motivations/inspirations/intentions are. two, everyone writes for a different reason. perhaps someone is venting, or projecting, or using it as a therapeutic release; often it’s lifted straight out of their own life. so i try not to judge the text in front of me based on stuff like that. (this leeway could also be because i used to read a lot of bashing fics where the majority of them are women, i think, and often with the flimsiest, most irrelevant reasons that are straight out of the Sexism Handbook of Traditional Patriarchy too so maybe i just started rationalising it for myself? idk)
second, i think it’s pretty well known that the majority of fandom is some combination of women/queer/neurodivergent/POC etc etc. so applying the lens of ‘critiquing mainstream media produced by cishet men’ doesn’t…really work here, i don’t think. the way we would analyse sexism in say, marvel or disney won’t (shouldn’t?) be the same as how we do it for fandom imo.
that being said, it’s still entirely possible for certain ‘problematic’ tropes/ideas to be prolific, right? this is where the sexism u mentioned comes in. i prefer to use symptomatic language here so saying ‘xyz has sexist/x-phobic elements’ instead of an absolute ‘the work/author is sexist/x-phobic’ because i don’t think the latter is either useful or accurate. when it comes to this, there’s one really important thing i look for here. is the author aware of what they’re writing? (which is a whole other issue tbh, complete w why i feel more comfortable around darkfic authors but let’s not go there rn lol) because a lot of the authors who write out lily or tonks in these ships do so knowingly bc it’s the only way for their plot to exist/evolve. sure, you can have an amicable resolution but will it provide the conflict u need? will it make for good entertainment? will it lead to 3D characters?
stories often need an antagonist and is it unfortunate that women often end up filling the role? sure. absolutely. i’d argue that one of the reasons we have so many mlm ships compared to wlw is because of mainstream media giving us better written men more often than not. and i think it’s totally fine to feel angry/frustrated/upset about that, especially when it carries over into fandom which is supposed to be a fun, inclusive, safe space. i get really frustrated at a lot of wolfstar discourse that entirely ignores the possibility of bisexuality. the vehement insistence that that a certain character can’t be with a woman bc they’re queer, for example, rubs me the wrong way and i think what you’re mentioning is something similar too. but, i always stop myself from assuming malicious intent on the author/fic’s part bc just because they write/believe something in fiction doesn’t make it true, ykno? and i can always step back and go look for something else that’s more to my liking.
and i think every creator would have something like this in their works tbh. i certainly do. i know for a fact that the way i’ve written lily in shovel talk and the patronus fic isn’t exactly favourable to her—even though i’ve tried to be neutral, she has definitely come out looking worse than the others and i admit that that’s on me. i wanted a certain dynamic & characterisation for james & sirius and this was the way to achieve it. people are allowed to dislike that. but they must also acknowledge that i’m allowed to write her that way.
i think, more often than not, we end up looking at this in simplistic binaries. ‘i like this -> good -> allowed to exist’ or ‘i don’t like this -> bad -> shouldn’t exist.’ i’m…not a fan of that. my opinion is we should advocate for more mindfulness within our writing but allowing writers to craft their stories the way they want (bc ultimately fic is supposed to simple and fun and not something you agonise over). and this is all interlinked, right? because the moment we say ‘ok. this might be portraying women in an icky manner, i don’t like it but the author can do that bc it’s a piece of fiction’ then u open the gates for more responsible reading & writing. authors would feel comfortable tagging their works with this, they can discuss it openly w/o being worried about reproach or ‘being cancelled’ and readers can make a more informed decision. but if you go in guns blazing with ‘ugh this fandom is so sexist, look at how it’s treating its women’ then you’ve pretty much killed all possibility for dialogue and improvement and that’s not helping anyone.
this kind of also ties in with my previous point about having differing standards for mainstream vs niche mediums of art. fanfiction authors are often, ironically enough, held to higher standards than published/paid creators which is interesting bc u can argue that their work doesn’t even have the kind of social impact that mainstream media does.
anyway. i’ve gone off on enough tangents here lol but i think i’ll end it with this: yes, women definitely come off worse in certain spaces, especially when they have to compete with mlm ships but i think that’s a conscious decision that authors take within the bounds of the material they have. as long as they are conscious of the fact/acknowledge it, i think likening it to sexism isn’t fair because u can’t have a story without plot devices, uncomfortable as they might be. if you see a pattern in someone’s stories of women being constantly shunted aside negatively, then i think u can take note of it and avoid it. maybe have a conversation with the author if they’re willing to talk about their creative choices. i feel like that’s the most u can do when it comes to online writing where u have no idea who’s on the other side of the screen.

Another four digit blog here, prolific poster of creativity, regular new genuine follows. Also like being in an empty warehouse with two people in the corner who wave occasionally and might every now and let out a cheer. Anyway, here's an ask - What's your personal favorite piece of fanart you've ever made and what are you the most proud of about it? Who are your favorite fanartists and fic authors?
Oh wow, I reblogged that text post about no engagement yesterday and went to sleep - I honestly didn’t expect to get any answer to it. Thank you for surprising me, Anon! Good to know I’m not the only one with similar experience on tumblr nowadays. And thank you for the wonderful questions and turning it all into spreading some positive feelings <3
Favourite piece of mine I’ve written at the moment is probably my finnpoe fic - even though it’s one of my worst fic in terms of engagement, I’m really fond of it and it has a special place in my heart because how long it is. My adhd brain is awful at multichaptered fics so I’m proud of myself for producing 30k of story of decent quality and ending it. You asked about fanart though but I answered about fics because it was an ask on my main tumblr. But I do have an art tumblr, too, which has double digit followers because it’s a new one and my art is very much a process of figuring shit out right now lol. But just in case you did mean fanart and not fan content in general, my fav would be my latest call of duty fanart. Just because I really felt like I am onto something with digital colouring here.
I’ve got lots of artists and writers who’s work I love but to list some that particularly have been keeping me sane recently I’d say @amikoroyaiart, @bluegiragi, @blackkatmagick, @queeniegalore - go check these people out, they’re amazing <3 (gods I’ve been fighting with myself if I should make it into actual @ since I don’t wanna bother anyone so I can only hope you’ll appreciate some love from a random follower).

red seal of fate #9: author's notes
Design notes
Tumblr media
A rough sketch of their Wangsheng outfits. The base is Zhongli’s and Hu Tao’s, of course, with similar colour scheme but detailing using their respective image colours/designs. As you might expect, black is a pretty traditional mourning colour. However, since Chinese families are pretty hierarchical, the direct descendents and their children can be given different coloured clothes e.g. blue, green, white, so Xiao’s regular colour scheme does still work. Outside of the funeral itself, you’re meant to wear muted colours up to a month (or more) as a show of respect.
There is an exception, though this itself also varies: should the deceased be 100 years or older when they passed, the family may don red instead, as a sign of good fortune and celebration that the person both had a long life, and most likely was able to witness the birth of 2-3 generations.
As staunchly traditional and strict these various rites can be, the ‘modern’ generation may opt to take liberties.
so the stars shall be our witness
I based the brief offerings scene off some things I’ve done myself. I know there’d be concerns over open burning because environment hazards but this is part of the culture. I’m taking things here and there that I know; the Chinese calendar has specific dates and the rituals themselves are practices I don’t really understand. Again, the rigidity depends from family to family, so don’t take this as gospel!
About the burning stuff, there are really elaborate paper crafts you can get to burn and ‘send’ to the deceased, in the form of things they didn’t get in life. The most common stuff gets dubbed ‘hell money’, IIRC to ‘bribe’ the, I suppose, guards of the underworld to let them visit the living world. Real food can get left out for the deceased to ‘taste’, with the offerings apparently tasting a little off / sour since the dead had their fill first. It’s not wasted as family will take home their share.
fleeting, eternal
Inazuma and Liyue have different writing scripts it looks like, but as a prolific writer I'm sure Akahito could have learnt it in the interest of knowing the styles outside of his nation. I tried to confirm the spoken languages for myself too which I find just a little inconclusive (I mean spoken by the nations, outside of Hilichurlian etc). The technicalities weren't  something I felt I could include in the fic naturally, so you have it in the extended notes here.
Following Kuronushi's deceit, the Five Kasen story as it is in-game seems to just end there. Besides the Kazuxiao goggles, I did wonder what would happen to them once they were no longer 5. Even if Sumizome could conclusively prove Kuronushi was behind the deceit, by the time they find out, he'd be long gone, the damage done, much like the Raiden Gokaden's fate.
Misc notes
Yinxing is one of the options I liked for ginkgo. I think you can guess why ginkgo, specifically :)
I hope you enjoy the morons. This felt right to me, so I hope you liked it too. I'm internally calling this a stealth addition to the "whimsy" series lol. Shh. Apparently I started the draft 24 April, it feels so much longer ago…

This week’s Author Spotlight is here! And our author in the spotlight is glitteringmoonlight! We really love this author and it seems like many of our friends do as well. We’ve both been recommended "on restitution" so many times! A testament of how good glitteringmoonlight is. If there was a list of authors to read as a newcomer, we think she would be on it for sure.
She has published 222k+ words on MDZS on ao3 in 12 works. You can find her @glitteringmoonlight on Tumblr.
Her fics:
Dreams of You (Are All I Have Left) - [teen | 2.7k | the 13 years]
love at every s(word f)ight - [teen | 3.2k | established relationship fluff]
one of our own - [general | 7.7k | 5 times the Lans defended WWX]
pay no attention to what’s behind the curtain - [teen | 7.4k | emperor!LWJ and concubine!WWX]
this version of our story - [general | 3.4k | Lan Sizhui learns about the Wens]
no smoke without fire - [teen | 12k | outsider pov about the Yiling Patriarch]
watch what we’ll become - [teen | 59k | arranged marriage between WWX and JZX - but still wangxian]
looking through a window - [teen | 5.4k | modern au online learning outsider pov]
pitfalls of greed (our post) - [teen | 3.3k | Yiling Laozu WWX]
our lives, never ours - [teen | 7.9k | hunger games au]
on restitution - [mature | 98k | WWX doesn’t die at the siege and is kept prisoner by JC - the rest of canon still happens]
this world (what I make of it) - [teen | 17k | wip | avatar au]
Dee’s favourite: I’m honestly torn? I love pitfalls of greed. It is one of the first fics I read. BAMF WWX is my jam. Looking through a window is a great fic too! There’s something so charming about outsider POV getting a glimpse of lovely Wangxian domesticity. The descriptions of LWJ and WWX are so enchanting here. I would highly recommend them.
Ju’s favourite: This was hard to choose, but “on restitution” has a big place in my heart. I was so afraid of reading it while the author was Anonymous, because the synopsis is so sad/angsty. The moment I saw who the writer was I started reading and just couldn’t put it down. And it is just so good!!! The first chapter is really angsty and it hurts a lot, but then the rest of the fic comes and it’s way less angsty than I expected. WWX is full of life, wangxian is absolutely glorious, and soft, and romantic, and sexy, and they tease and trust each other. The juniors are also there, and we get Wei Yuan for once! They are all so in character and it makes me so happy. Mostly WWX pov, but I cannot forget to mention Jingyi’s pov. I just couldn’t stop laughing at his chapter. Cannot rec this one enough.
The Interview:
Q. When did you start writing fics? Did you have fandoms before this one?
A. I used to write for Percy Jackson and Harry Potter in the early 2010s (under a different name), though not very prolifically, but that tapered off fairly quickly. Apart from a few unpublished fic drafts for Lord of the Rings and Leverage, I only really got back into fic writing after I rewatched Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2020.
Q. What made you start writing for MDZS?
A. Wangxian! What drew me to the source material was the fact that I found Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji utterly fascinating as individual characters, but it was how much I loved their relationship dynamic that got me thinking about writing fic. There was also something about the plot and themes of MDZS itself that I found very compelling, and that made me even more interested in exploring it in fic. I didn’t realize it would lead to me writing so many fics in this fandom, but I’m certainly not complaining!
Q. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
A. That’s a really hard question to answer because I love different fics for different reasons, and at any given time, the fic I’m working on at the moment is usually my favourite. Among my finished fics, I particularly love on restitution, because of the way I got to portray Wangxian (and how many sweet, fluffy interactions I managed to fit into it, which… might seem like an odd reason given the premise, summary, and tags) and no smoke without fire, because it contains so many tropes I love— Wei Wuxian being a genius inventor, Wei Wuxian and the Wen remnants as found family, kids loving Wei Wuxian… the list goes on.
Q. What’s your favourite type of fics to read?
A. It depends on the day, really. Sometimes I love a good plot-heavy fic and other times I just want tender domestic fluff. But when it comes to MDZS, I do have a soft spot for fics of the ‘Wei Wuxian protection squad’ variety and fics that heavily feature the Wen siblings and Wei Wuxian’s relationship.
Q. What’s your favourite comment? Or type of comment?
A. Any comment at all! It’s always amazing to know that someone liked my fic(s) enough to let me know! (Though it’s a special kind of thrill to see the same person comment on multiple of my fics, because it tells me that they liked my writing enough to check out what else I’ve written)
Q. What is your favorite trope to read and/or write?
A. Established relationship and all the subtropes that encompasses! I love the familiarity, the casual intimacy, the comfort in each other’s presence… I could go on and on. I also love a good outsider POV (as evidenced by how many of them I’ve written), and as a natural consequence, established relationship from outsider POV.
Q. Do you have any advice for new authors?
A. Write what you want to read. I’ve found that it’s a lot more enjoyable to write something that you personally like, and editing feels a lot less tedious when you enjoy what you’re proofreading. Also, there’s a good chance you’ll connect with other people who enjoy the same things you do!
Q. What do you think is the most important element in writing? Plot, characterization, relationship?
A. They’re all important, but characterization drives everything else, I feel. The characters— and the way they react to situations and to each other— influence how the plot progresses and the relationships develop, so characterization is an essential part of writing.

I usually try to stay off of my fandom discourse soapbox, but hear my heartfelt plea: There are so many amazing short works (I’m talking under 30k) in fandom! If you usually stick to 100k+ works, please take a little breather between your next WIPs or completed works and check some of them out. Some Facts and Figures, because of who I am as a person:
As of today, 12/30/20, there are 11,997 Dramione fics on AO3 and 75% of them are complete
Only 367 of those (3%) are over 100k and only 227 (1.9%) are over 100k and complete
Only 1430 of them (11.9%) are over 30k
In order to write a 100k work in six months, a fanfic author would have to write an average of 548 words a day, or 769 words five days a week (this, of course, doesn’t include other projects, editing time, or rewrites)
The average daily word counts of professional authors vary greatly, but seem to generally land in the 500 - 2000 word range, with some prolific exceptions. Bear in mind that these are the word counts of people who write as their full time job! (Source)
The average published novel is between 80k-100k, but anything over 45k is considered novel-length
Published writers who produce a novel every year are thought to be prolific. However, in fandom, there is such an incredible demand and pressure for a high volume of words in an environment in which people are not and cannot be paid for their labor.
There are many short pieces out there that are crafted with a lot of love by incredibly skilled authors. A great deal of labor can go into writing a 10k piece, rewriting some or all of it, self-editing it perhaps 3-5 times, and then sending it off to alphas and betas for more editing. I’ve been so impressed by the absolute immersive qualities and gorgeous prose of some of the short fiction I’ve read in fandom.
If you work full-time, or even part-time, or have loved ones to care for, or have any number of the Complicating Life Factors that so many of us have, and also have a rigorous standard when it comes to the work you put out into the world, it isn’t always feasible to bang out long works. More power and so much appreciation to those who can do this (❤️❤️❤️) but it just isn’t possible for everyone. And it can be very disheartening to spend all of your free time working to put out a one-shot or a short multi-chap and see so much, “I don’t read anything incomplete or under 100k,” or “It’s pretty short, like 70k, but it’s good so it’s worth it anyway!” in forums and discussion groups. My friends, 70k is a full-ass novel!
Which is to say, go forth and shower love on all those short works now and again. Especially if you’re feeling antsy or frustrated because you’ve “run out” of long, completed works. There is nothing nicer than getting a glowing comment on a six-month, or year-old, or two-year-old one shot! And there are truly so many lovely hidden gems out there!!

@littleferal is doing an author appreciation event and i was going to participate, but then i realized my list for shout outs was way too long and i didn’t want to flood their inbox, so i thought it better to make it a post instead. thank you for getting this started, Lissie! sorry in advance to anyone reading for how long winded this is..
@beskarberry 🎆 lellow you are a fuckin icon of a writer; Solisequious, Kudzu and literally all of your monsterfucking fics were some of the most inspiring works i’ve ever read. you aren’t afraid to just go there, to throw some batshit crazy things at the wall and see what sticks, and you do it so eloquently it leaves me breathless and desperate for more. it’s also been an honor working on that project i spoke to you about. hopefully it’ll be done soon so i can spread the love of your stuff even more 😈
@starlightmornings 🦋 you’ve always showed up randomly on my dash with one work or another, and i shit you not, there is not a single post i’ve come across that i haven’t enjoyed. your style is so immersive and doesn’t fail to leave me on the edge of my seat! and lets not forget the fucking masterpiece that is Easy, Girl. that was the sort of content i was sorely needing at the time and i didn’t even know it. thank you <3
@absurdthirst ⚜️ keri you are by far the biggest percentage in my likes list. you’re one of the most prolific writers i know of and you always seem to be having fun with everything you write! it makes it that much better and more fun to read the endless treasure trove that is not just your works masterlists, but the ones you reblog too. your blog is always the place i go to when i need a good one shot, or need to expand my horizons to other blogs, since you have so many others in the “find a fic” tag and just normal reblogs in general. you are also so kind and understanding, allowing people to talk about whatever they need to in your inbox; it’s impressive! the following message is for you AND constance!
@wardenparker 💚 friend, you and keri fucking kill me with every word of Wish You Were Here. the way you convey emotion in your writing is so gentle but so realistic at the same time, the grief, the joy, the fluster, and the approach you take to every character in the way they have conversations just- AGHHDHHSKEEMAKQ i just love y’all so much for that work. in the coming year, constance, i’ve made it a point to make sure i read more of your stuff since i’m new to your blog; the whole masterlist by february, that’s the goal, and i could not be more stoked to complete it!
@blueeyesatnight 🌌 YEESH WHERE DO I START, i get so excited whenever i see something of yours come into my orbit. you’re one of the few writers that i don’t have notifications turned on for, but that’s only for the fact that i get SO much joy and pure serotonin when i’m surprised by a post of yours showing up somewhere! seriously, it makes my day so much better every time i find and save one for later so i have something to look forward to at the end of the day. it’s actually improved my day to day life a helluva lot, and for that i am so thankful. back to you specifically, the way you write your characters is so expertly refined, ESPECIALLY pero omfg, and the detail you go into for imagery, among other things, just takes my breath away, i love it
@dincrypt 🌃 i mean. come on. you know where i’m going with this. DADDY DIN GANG NEVER DIES!! E&M is one of those works i keep coming back to over and over and still never get tired of. i get bored really easy and skip a lot of words with most fics due to unintentional skimming and spoiling as a result (adhd is a bitch) but your fics are some of the few that i’ve held onto every, and i mean every word the entire time. E&M specifically is so immersive and well done, the slow burn is an actual slow burn which really helps when i get too spoiled by reading a bunch of things so fast that suddenly the plots all feel dull and blur together. this one forces the reader to take their time and really get a feel for how the characters’ minds work, and that is an aspect in writing i am so jealous of. it’s just SO GOOD, not to mention fulfilling for the kind of dynamic i dream of🥺
@unhinged-summer-fun 🦑 GOOD LOOOOORRD YOUR INATE ABILITY TO MAKE ME PINE FOR CHARACTERS I NEVER WANTED TO PINE FOR— it’s offensive (affectionate). i never would have gotten into Boba if it wasn’t for The Art of Second Place, and i mean never. sweet stars that fic has such a treasured place in my heart. and don’t even get me STARTED ON TRIPTYCH, THE YEARNING, THE YEEEEAAARRRNNNIIIINNNG, i love it i love it i love it, i was never a Pike fan until you. i love your writing so very much and i hope you are doing well right now
honorable mentions; I HAVENT KNOWN ABOUT YOUR BLOG LONG BUT YOUR WORK IS VERY GOOD AND I WANT TO GIVE YOU A LONG AND DETAILED COMPLIMENT LIKE YOU DESERVE BUT ALL I CAN COME UP WITH RN IS FBDKSOENXHIDOEMENXKSYOU’RE REALLY COOL AND ILY THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO
@mandocrasis 🎇
@doveandgeography 🕊
@frannyzooey 🍀
@krissology 🥥
@radiowallet ⚛️
finally, i’ve got these last two because of what they mean to me on not just a reader’s admiration level, but also on a serious personal/social level. i haven’t known either of them personally for very long, but that means all the more with the amount of gentleness and hospitality they’ve treated me with since the moment we started speaking.
@ezrasbirdie 🏵 so not only had i coveted your works for the better part of a year, but when i finally had the balls to reach out and communicate to you how much i loved you and your stuff, plus the things i was struggling with, you welcomed it with open arms and gave me exactly the kind of interaction and friendship i was looking for when i came here. you told me things i didn’t know i needed to hear, made me cry multiple times with your writing AND your messages, and just overall you mean a heck of lot to me
@anaaaispunk 💟 you were so kind to me right out of the gate without even knowing who i was, which was already so elating enough, but with your one reblog of my art, i went from 0 to 9 followers, through which i became mutuals with a BUNCH OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS, INCLUDING YOU, and gained over 50 total notes, all in under an hour! i could not thank you enough for being so kind and welcoming, and helping me finally make a breakthrough into the social circle of the fandom that i’ve been admiring for so long. i hope that so many good things come your way and soon, because i mean it, i do not have enough time on this earth to thank you enough lovey!
I LOVE EACH AND EVERY PERSON ON THIS LIST ON SO MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS AND I HOPE Y’ALL KNOW WHAT YOU’RE WORTH!! YOUR WRITING IS AMAZING, YOU YOURSELF ARE AMAZING, AND YOU DESERVE EVEN MORE RECOGNITION THAN YOU ALREADY GET BECAUSE WOWIE GOOD SOUP MAN GOOD SOUP
I ALSO HOPE TO GET TO KNOW AT LEAST A COUPLE OF YOU NOW THAT IVE MADE A BREAKTHROUGH INTO THE FANDOM, AND I VERY MUCH LOOK FORWARD TO IT SHOULD THAT EVER BE IN THE CARDS! MAY MANY MANY GOOD THINGS COME TO YOU ALL IN THE NEW YEAR!!!

Hi there! Do you have any advice on improving traction towards a fanwork/fic? I love writing—and it's not for notoriety by any means—but having validation and feedback also feels nice (I hope that's not conceited). What would you recommend to someone without a large audience/follower base? I do "advertise" on tumblr when my work is written/updated on AO3. How did your journey start? Thank you!
This is an interesting question and I doubt most people are going to like the answers, but here we go:
So, first and foremost, you need to be realistic about why you're creating in the first place. If you're doing work in a fandom that is older, where content has stopped coming out, or that is simply smaller, you're not going to get much engagement, period. There will, of course, be activity in these fandoms, but it will be far less and the people involved—while they may view your work—will be less likely to comment/spread it around simply because there's not much going on. So if you're creating in that sort of environment (which can be a really good environment if you're looking for something chill with no pressure), then you have to be prepared for low engagement, even if the people you do meet and who are willing to talk about your work are more regularly in your sphere. You can probably make better/closer friends in these sorts of fandoms, if you're willing to try.
But, on the other end of this, if you're coming into a huge fandom late, it's also going to be harder to wade through the massive following to get your stuff out there. For example, in both the Miraculous and Sk8 fandom, I started work pretty early on, when the shows were still gaining traction, and so my "name" as a creator gained traction parallel to that growth, as opposed to when I started writing in the Voltron fandom. With Voltron, I came in super late and so what few fics I had that did gain traction took a lot longer to get there because people already had their fav content creators in the fandom, etc. It's not impossible to get popular in this situation—far from it—but it does take longer.
You'll also benefit from having finished works early on in a fandom's lifespan, at least with writing. This is because there's less competition for views and so more people will be filtered to your work, initially. This means that you have a better chance of getting those comments and kudos. Having a finished work increases this engagement because people look for finished works before works in progress. Generally, the length of a fic doesn't matter much for popularity, so long as it's DONE. When I was writing in the ML fandom, quite a few of my earlier fics were shorter, and they compete in popularity with my longer fics, because people care more about having a finished story, not a long story. That's why when it came to Only Practice Makes Perfect in the Sk8 fandom, I worked hard to get that shit done, because it was the most popular story I had in the fandom and I decided—like an idiot—to make it a long fic. Which, yeah, means people probably love it/remember it more in the long run, but if I hadn't finished it in 2 to 3 months, I'd have lost considerable traction as far as making a name within the fandom.
This leads into one of the most important points, if not THE MOST IMPORTANT point in gaining an audience—consistency. If you do want to be a successful creator, you Have To Be Consistent. This is the most difficult hurdle for all creators, and it is oftentimes impossible to make happen. If you want to aim for professionalism, which a lot of fandom creators don't care about (which is fine), then consistency is how you get there. Nobody wants to read a fic or follow an artist who doesn't stick to creating what they start (RIP all my unfinished works and the people who left me as a result, LOL). Using my most recent works as an example, I very, very, very consistently updated Only Practice Makes Perfect multiple times a week. To the point where people got comfortable expecting it, which is the key variable here. When people become comfortable that you will regularly create content, they not only stick around, but will be more interactive with you and your work. Nobody likes the disappointment of getting involved with a work only for that work to rarely get updates. Most people don't have the attention span to care. I'll admit, if I read a fic that's not finished and the writer takes one week to update, then one week, then THREE weeks, I probably will, like, forget about it. That's just life.
The best thing you can do is schedule. And again, this is the HARDEST thing to do, because it holds the creator to a deadline. Most people who create in fandoms don't want that kind of pressure—and that's fine. I go back and forth on when I have scheduled releases and when I don't, depending on what I'm aiming to do. But if you to retain your audience, telling them that you will update a work regularly on such and such a day and such and such a time, it creates something for them to remember. If they're invested in your work, they will think, "oh, it's Friday, that means such and such is coming out with something new." But, with that in mind, you also have to commit to a schedule that people will remain invested in. Which basically means you can't put things out more than a week away from each other, unless you're really, really famous, lol. If I told people I was going to go on a two week update schedule, I would lose most of my audience. But a week is long enough for people to both still remember and anticipate. That's just how the scheduling of the world works. And if you're an artist that's working on a big project, then you have to share progress, or pieces of what you're doing on a regular basis. That's what generates "buzz" and keeps you relevant. And, yeah, that's a really hard schedule to commit to, because it's a lot of work. BUT this consistency is where you see people being successful. Popular youtubers may not have gained their popularity by being consistent, but most sure do retain it that way. And again, there are outlying exceptions, but they generally ARE exceptions.
Speaking of hard work, here's probably the second hardest thing to accomplish—you have to be prolific. Especially as a writer. You have to write A LOT if you want to gain an audience. And yeah, that means you have to work, a lot. I love my work, so I enjoy that "grind," and I also have developed a lot of strategies to work around writer's block and every other obstacle that tends to catch people up. I work in a very professional manner—I do outlines, and drafts, and plan. I do a lot of stuff that people who do this kind of thing for fun can't be bothered with (and that's fine), but that's because I find it to be what works best in creating an efficient environment. I'm also very, very NOT lazy, lol. I was raised in an environment where you have to work for everything that you want. My parents didn't buy me my first computer, or snowboard, or what have you. We were tight on money and if I wanted something, they couldn't help me—I had to get that shit on my own. And I also grew up on a farm, where hard work was a staple of how you did things. You did things the right way, even if it was the hard way. You can't cut corners and it's the same with this. If you want it, you have to actually do the work, that's it. Some people get lucky with popularity, most don't. Most famous actors didn't become well-known off their first efforts, they had to keep trying and keep working and then they have to continue to do that to stay relevant. So if that doesn't sound great to you, then you might want to not focus on your audience and just create because you enjoy it, lol. Sometimes that's what I do too, when I don't wanna deal with the pressure.
Moving on, here's another point that nobody is going to like. Simply put, you also have to be good at what you do. I think some people don't realize that I've been writing fic for over fifteen years. I currently have nearly 2 millions words worth of fics on AO3 and that doesn't include a majority of the stuff I've ever written. I practice A LOT. I write every day. And I'll tell ya, when I started out in middle school, my stuff was not good. But I worked hard, I ignored the hate, and I kept going. That is the only way you will ever get better at anything. There's no quick way to become a better writer, or artist. And a vast majority of people are only going to pay attention to your stuff if it's quality work. Getting to that point is a process, on top of then creating stuff that fits into popular molds. Not only am I good at what I do (and I don't care how arrogant that sounds—I've worked my ass off), but when it comes to fandoms, I rarely write "rare pairs" and "crack ships." Generally, if it's popular, that's where I am. That makes a big difference and I honestly don't have sympathy for people who write rare pairs and such and then complain about lack of engagement. You knew what you were getting into (it's mostly the Miraculous fandom that gave me this bitterness). If you're not writing what people WANT to read, then your audience is simply going to be smaller. And that audience doesn't owe you their attention, no matter how frustrating it is or how good your work is. I could be the best writer in the world, but if I'm writing RekixCherry fic, I have nobody to blame but myself when nobody reads it. BUT if that's your passion, and writing a certain unpopular thing makes you happy, then, again, you need to not be concerned with traction and your audience.
The last point I'll make is that it matters HOW you present yourself online. A good chunk of the well-known creators in any fandom are, simply put, older people. And those that aren't, and are able to connect with those older creators, have generally created a bubble around themselves of maturity and, like, of being nice, lol. A lot of creators are skittish these days, and if you're an asshole (anti) or fight a lot over stupid shit, you may get a bigger audience, but you will isolate yourself from other creators. And this is important because oftentimes it is your exposure to other creators that will get your work circulating. The reason I got popular in the ML fandom? I wrote a short angst fic and a really popular artist shared it/talked about it and the rest was history. But if I'd had a habit of being an asshole, probably wouldn't have happened. And, granted, I'm not saying don't voice your opinions, but if you're loud all the time, it does turn people off. Especially creators because they are oftentimes the ones being attacked. They don't want to pull more of that negative bullshit into their lives. I'll admit, when I was in the ML fandom, I was down for a fight, but then that's what people came to expect, and it probably did turn others off, and then when I didn't fight, or didn't think the way my audience thought I should, it, again, turned people off. It's really not worth it unless being that type of person IS your platform.
So, that's all the advice I can give, I suppose. And even if you do all this stuff, that still doesn't mean you're going to be popular. At the end of the day, the thing that I stick to is this—I do what I want, I love what I do, and I work hard. If I'm in a position to worry about all that other stuff, then sure, I do, but otherwise… There's no easy way to become popular and, quite frankly, it's better to just "live" working hard and being a decent person than it is to focus on all this bullshit. I've created a working environment where I function within these "points" quite naturally, so it's not something I think about (except for schedules, lol). Sometimes I get popular in fandoms, sometimes I don't. At the end of the day, it comes down to how much work you're willing to do, because you will always be giving more than you are getting back, so you have to at least enjoy what you're doing.
Seriously, just do it because you love it. And if the pressure of everything above is something you don't love (I like a good, high pressure situation, lol), then don't do it that way—it's not worth the grief.

My dear little man (cat) is back home and healing after a stroke so now that my heart is back inside of my body I am here to list off just some of my (many) favorite things you have written. I’m keeping it to 5 because that seems reasonable.
I’m sorry to hear you’re having such a rough go of writing at the moment. Hopefully some effusive praise will, at the very least, distract from that. Here we go, in no particular order:
1. The Audition from WATJP
This whole fic is so excellent. Truly delicious writing. (Could I do five favorites just from WATJP? yes, yes I could) I love the relationships between James/Sirius/Remus/Peter - you’re always so good at setting up a clear and interesting dynamic between everyone with just your dialogue. I’m especially delighted by this after James has raised his hand - the interaction between James, Remus, and Sirius there is so funny and lived-in and real.
Of course, your banter between Lily and James is top notch, but I love how you can show so much of their relationship dynamic and their chemistry when they’re speaking someone else’s words.
2 - 3. James’ tells and general misinterpretations in (The Mostly Unwilling Participants on) The Bachelor
It’s so fun in this fic to watch James figure out that he’s into Lily - it’s not a dynamic we get to see often and you roll it out so beautifully - where there are tells long before James knows how to articulate it. One of my favorite examples is in Chapter 5, when you do this, first with James’ enthusiasm growing every time Lily plays along, and then with:
“"You’re not even his type!"
James’s sharp "Ha!" likely made it across the room, through the open (and stupidly) French doors onto the patio, and halfway across the garden.”
and finally with him getting so caught up that he hugs Lily.
You capture so much about the behavior of two people utterly smitten with one another and it makes my heart all fluttery!
Something else I love about your fics where you write from either James or Lily’s perspective is how you write their misinterpretations of each other’s behavior or words - it’s such a fun unreliability that, obviously creates some of the best dramatic irony. In this same chapter (because you are, despite how you may be feeling, rather prolific) is one of my favorite examples of this, with Lily’s pov:
“Clearly, the best she was going to get from James was confirmation that she'd been foisted upon him by Rita Skeeter, and a blokey comparison to a bloody dinosaur.
A velociraptor, of all things.
Dinosaurs were wicked cool, it was true, and she understood the compliment it implied, but he might as well have punched her in the shoulder and referred to her as dude for all the good it had done her. The resulting effect would have been exactly the same.”
*chef’s kiss*
4. James’ humor in Salmon Fishing in the Olympics
Ahhh, another that I love so much. James’ humor is especially delightful here. I feel like other people have brought up specific excellent quotes from this fic, but again:
She comes to a standstill in front of him. "As if you're allowed to eat at McDonald's."
"I'm not, but I sometimes press myself up against their windows."
"What a treat for the diners."
"Puts them right off their nuggets."
..
"What kind of car do you drive?"
"I—er—" Vernon is taken aback by the change in subject, but can never resist an opportunity to discuss his car. Lily has taught James well. "An Audi A4. What car do you drive?"
"None," says James. "I sprint everywhere."
Vernon blinks stupidly. "Everywhere?"
"Yeah, but I can only do it in 200 metre bursts. It took months to get to Rio."
..
"They always let me skip the queue at Starbucks because I'm a national hero."
"I hate you."
are all a sheer delight.
5. All the pining in Shelf Awareness
I’ve read this approximately 128 times because obviously your writing + bookshop setting is perfection for me. And my goodness, the chemistry of it all!
He's so fit that she can't look him directly in the eye without a tell-tale, inconvenient, irrepressible smile that screams, 'I want to wear you like pyjamas,' which makes her feel guilty for looking in the first place—she has a boyfriend, after all, and she's never been the kind of girl to flirt about when she's with someone—so she shrugs and buries her nose in her phone while he scans in the rest of the books.
Or: “smiling at her in a way that makes her feel like her secrets aren't her own” - I mean, come on! The economy of that. A whole culinary school’s worth of chef’s kisses.
All of this is to say that you are a terrific writer and I’m always happy to revisit your writing because it’s so full of humor and pining and banter. Every one of your characters are full, amusing and entertaining and so specific.
Also apologies for the wonky formatting - I am frustrated with my thumbs at the moment.
I don't really have words. I'm just sobbing reading this. I can't believe you took the time to write it all and send it to me, especially when you've just been through the ringer yourself. You have no idea how much this this means to me, no idea. I'm in tears. I'm so glad that your cat is recovering. Actual tears. Thank you so much.
Also I forgot to tag @fetchalgernon because she's responsible for James in Bachelor fic and she 100% deserves credit for that <3

How many works do you have on AO3? 209?? I'm sorry what????
What’s your total AO3 word count? 958,942??? HOW????????????
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? *cackles* Oh sweetheart, sit down. We're gonna be here for a while.
According to my AO3 account, I have 54 different fandoms tagged. Most of them are for video games, but the occasional anime sneaks in now and then. I also have a few MCU fics, one book fic, and a podcast fic. My most prolific fandom is Final Fantasy VI with 50 fics.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Wings of Valor and Compassion (Pharah/Mercy - Overwatch)
No Safety in Desire (Urbosa/Zelda - Legend of Zelda)
Give Them Something to Talk About (Dina/Ellie - The Last of Us)
Finally, Beautiful Stranger (Aeris/Tifa - Final Fantasy VII)
Don't Bring Your Black Heart to Bed (Thanatos/Zagreus - Hades)
Glad to see everyone enjoying my quality gay shit. Also very amused that out of these five, three of them were from last year.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I do! Or I at least make a solid effort to do so! I usually can't really sit down to properly reply until the weekend, unless it's something super quick I can shoot off on my phone, so I hope people don't mind the wait.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Depends on the flavor? For straight-up Bad Ending vibes, absolutely Limbo (I really need to crack out another horror fic, because I love those, even if the majority of fandom doesn't). For right-in-the-feels vibes, Waiting for the Dust to Settle was a recent one I did that just sucker punches you with bittersweet Oh No goodness. It also reminds me of In Another Perfect Life, which ends on a similar note. *squints* actually, these are all for Final Fantasy VIII, which is saying a lot about... something lol
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? Um... not really? I don't think I have? At least not in the traditional sense where characters from Fandom A interact with characters from Fandom B. I have written some fusion crossover stuff. If You Had Life Eternal comes to mind, where I took Jaina and Kael from WoW and plopped them in Diablo's setting, because reasons.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? I had someone leave a super homophobic comment on one of my Pharmercy fics back in the day, which like... dude, are you lost?? I've also gotten some general weird comments that have little to nothing to do with the fic. I do remember someone on FFN commented saying that I needed Jesus on one of my witch-y fics. Sigh.
Do you write smut? If so what kind? Yes. The delicious kind (I hope).
Have you ever had a fic translated? Probably?? I've had a handful of people over the years ask to translate my stuff, but I haven't seen anything pop up on AO3.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Nope.
What’s your all-time favorite ship? LIKE JUST ONE???? My brain fluctuates when it comes to this, but I definitely have a type or two I always gravitate towards. The most recent addition is Keitaro/Natsuno (13 Sentinels), which lives in my head rent-free from now until I die. I also always find myself coming back to Celes/Setzer (FFVI) and Aeris/Tifa (FFVII).
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? A bunch of 2016 drafts I started and then dropped when my life imploded. I've yet to revisit any of them and I'm not sure if I ever will at this point :\
What are your writing strengths? Apparently sneezing out 7k words without breaking a sweat.
What are your writing weaknesses? Sneezing out 7k words without breaking a sweat *sobs in a corner* ALSO TITLES I HATE TITLES
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I'm... not sure I fully understand what this means? Like having characters speak in another language randomly? I did this sparingly in Darkness/Starlight, where I had Jidoor be a blend of French and Italian, thus giving Setzer an appropriate accent and the occasional French comment. I didn't translate those into English, because the POV character (Celes) wouldn't have understood what was being said. Plus any time Setzer did dip into it, he was speaking from the heart, but was too afraid to actually TELL her. So if anyone had half the mind to translate those bits, they'd find out Setzer said the most touching things to her in French.
ANYHOW. I honestly don't really do this much, especially when a handful of my fandoms are Japanese and I'm writing in English and we're just assuming everyone's talking in Japanese so... yeah. Take it or leave it, I guess.
What was the first fandom you wrote for? Like when I was 10??? A crossover between Sailor Moon and Final Fantasy VII because FUCK YOU I DO WHAT I WANT.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? You're killing me, smalls, and I ain't picking just one.
Darkness/Starlight is forever near and dear to my heart for being a labor of love for such a small, old fandom and my beloved rarepair.
Learn to Fly is one I love for the amount of research I put in (I replayed Pyre and took so many notes on both Ti'zo's and Rhae's speech patterns to get them just right) and the delightful, yet bittersweet messages it exudes.
Long Journey Home is another favorite, because I poured my heart into it and it's got one of my favorite lines and ending.
Of What's Left of Us and Who We Used to Be was my attempt at evoking the surreal, yet heartwrenching vibes from the series and again, I also poured my heart into it.
Before We Have Another Chance to Go Loving was me cramming a massive longfic idea I had in my head forever into a small triple drabble series and it's forever canon in my heart.
The Lies We Tell Ourselves is my most recent fic I've published, which I wrote/edited/polished in four days, but I'm tickled pink with how it turned out.
tagging: @dvske @deemoyza @rosemochi @fury-brand @aliatori and any other writers who feel like swiping this! No pressure, as always 💕

Friday Feature: June 11, 2021
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Friday Feature, where every Friday I feature a different Fanfic Writer’s blog. This week’s Feature Blog is:
Link to Masterlist
About the Author:
My name is Lou! I’m 30-year-old queer teacher/writer/bookworm/geek living in Virginia. I’m a dog mom and a Gemini and an INFP and a Hufflepuff. I started writing fic when I was thirteen and continued all through high school, mostly in the Panic! At The Disco fandom. I got my BA in writing and took a break from writing fiction recreationally for a while, but picked it up again when I started watching Supernatural in 2017. I haven’t really stopped writing since. These days I’m working on an original YA novel and some original erotica for Kindle, as well as fic; I write Supernatural, Criminal Minds, Marvel, and more.
Other info: I turned one of my most popular fics, Everything, into an Amazon ebook, which is available over here. I also dabble in making graphics and edits and memes, which can all be found here!
Blog Recommendation by @thoughtslikeaminefield:
Lou is a gift to fanfiction. She’s well-read, prolific in her own right, generous with her thoughts, and willing to take chances.
She’s also a really fucking impressive human and an even better friend.
Her words are intriguing, delightful, and, thought provoking. She does the good work of a community member and encourages more!
I’m so honored to have nominated her to be part of this awesome project.
Tumblr media
Author’s Fave Personal Fics:
All That I Ask
Summary: This story is about intimacy and agency and trust. I think almost every woman knows what it’s like to feel powerless or unsafe during sex, and this fic explores how sexy it can be when a partner does prioritize comfort, consent, and communication.
Why the author likes this fic:
This fic was my way of writing out some of the things I could’ve really benefited from hearing during my own recovery from sexual trauma, but I loved being able to turn that “therapy writing” into something hot. It meant a lot to hear from people who needed to read this sort of thing, just as much as I needed to write it, and I’m really proud that I could write smut that also struck an emotional chord.
Coffee & Psychopaths Series
Summary: Sam Winchester and Spencer Reid cross paths at an N.A. meeting and become friends. They drink too much coffee and talk about human nature.
Why the author likes this fic:
These two characters are my favorite, and their stories have so many fascinating parallels and contrasts to explore. I’m so proud of the imagery and themes woven through this series; it’s basically a meditation on a lot of topics that I love writing about, like addiction and psychology, through the lens of Spencer and Sam and their stories. It was a challenge to weave the canon and timelines of both shows together, and I think I managed it in a really fun way.
Marked
Summary: This is a story about trust and control. It’s about the Mark of Cain, trauma and recovery, BDSM, vulnerability, honesty, and the marks we leave on people we love.
Why the author likes this fic:
This was one of the first stories I started when I took up writing again, and over the course of eighty thousand words and two-ish years, I poured a whole lot of my heart and soul into it. It’s hot as hell but it’s also a very real, emotional, honest fic; it’s not a simple fairy tale love story.

Author’s Fic Recommendations:
The Spins by @sp-oops
Summary: “It’s Dean’s birthday. After dinner and a hell of a lot of celebratory beer, the lot of you decide it would be a fucking fantastic idea to play spin the bottle.”
Why the author likes this fic:
I love writing (and reading) anticipation and tension just as much as, if not more than, the sex itself. This is a freakin’ master class in slow build and epic payoff.
SOFreddie Note: I cannot tag this individual. Someone please let them know they are loved!
Crash by @littlegreenplasticsoldier
Summary: “A witch throws a Lust curse at you and you convince Sam to help you out.”
Why the author likes this fic:
This was one of the first SPN fics I read and it still stands as one of my all-time favorites! Ali has the most amazing and distinctive narrative voice; she has a phenomenally snarky sense of humor and an eye for unique quirky descriptive details. This fic is hot, but it’s also hilarious.
Dear Mr. Fantasy by @itmighthavebeenintentional
Summary: “Sometimes when he sleeps, Dean sees flashes of other Dean Winchesters, in other universes. His dreams lately have been filled with himself in a thousand forms, a thousand different versions of what could have been.”
Why the author likes this fic:
I have no idea how Val managed to weave this much life and emotion and beautiful details into two thousand words. She let me see the first draft of this, and even in its roughest form, it was immediately something special; it just grabbed me by the heart and never let go. I’ve never read anything like it and it touches me in a way that very few fics have.

how do you keep track of so many wips and decide how to work on them? what’s your planning process like? you’re so prolific and seem so organized and i’m perpetually curious about how you manage it all!
Aww, thanks! It's good to know I seem prolific and organized 😅 I talked a little bit here about how I got started and where ideas come from and here about consistency(?), structure, and time.
Actually, would y'all be interested in vlogs about writing? I've noticed that I've gotten quite a few of these questions, and the questions that are out there generally have me thinking as well. I've been chatting with fellow writers all week about process, actually. I've also been wanting to experiment with video. My PTD trip video hasn't materialized and probably won't for at least a while, if ever, so I'm still looking for an excuse to play!
Aaaaanyway, refocusing on the present ask! I put together some resources and screenshots for planning and organization, as well as some notes on execution. Read on after the jump if you're into that sort of thing! You can also follow my #how i write tag, check out my BTS case conceptualizations project and follow the #bts case conceptualizations tag, and keep letting me know what kind of writer-y stuff you might be interested in! You know me, I'm always happy to take a closer look!
Tumblr media
Intro
Do you love puzzles? I love puzzles. Words, numbers, shapes, patterns. I just really love puzzles. I like having a set structure and frameworks to play within, but near-infinite ways of going about solving things that eventually dwindle down into a clear solution.
I don't know how popular of a sentiment this is, but I think of all writing as solving a puzzle. This is a conversation that @mochilatae / Roomie and I have all the time! For me, thinking about it this way makes my intentions and goals clear. I then have a set structure that I follow, though the way that I move through that structure changes from fic to fic, or even word to word. This might feel and seem a little formulaic, but that's because it is, by design! Maybe this is why people feel I'm organized/consistent?
Some background context: a lot of my methods come from the basics of script writing and academic writing. There was a period of time when all I did was write plays and spec scripts (you can read some here!). There was also a time when all I wrote were APA manuscripts for academic publication. The things that both of these worlds have in common is that there are set rules and structures that help guide writers and readers alike. There's a shared language and a universal understanding, which translates into clear expectations and more objective ways of identifying if something is "successful" or not. Following a set style guide doesn't work for all types of writing, but if it happens to be your bag, I highly suggest checking out these frameworks!
Tumblr media
Planning
I do a lot of world-building and fantasizing to start. Sometimes, it happens in a very compressed amount of time, like writing all of Like Butter in my head in the 20 seconds of Yoongi's Butter concept video. Sometimes, it happens across time, like the years of experiences I had in academia that informed Office Hours.
I don't use a specific process for this. The planning comes and goes in waves. I don't chase the energy; I follow it. I don't pressure myself to write when I don't feel like it, and I clear my schedule as much as I can if I notice that I'm in a groove. I recognize that that is a privilege that not many people have, but it admittedly has allowed me to adapt to moments when my muse is most fickle.
Tumblr media
Organization
I think of organization in two categories: organization of a fic, and organization of all of my fics.
One fic: The way I organize a fic is very similar to the conventional ways scripts are laid out. I start with characterization, always. I assign clear and central themes and motivations to each character, and the process that helps support that are my case conceptualization tools.
I also outline before I start creatively writing, especially when I'm writing a novel-length fic with multiple chapters. I do this is by deciding on chapters titles upfront. I like using gimmicky chapter titles because 1) they're super fun, and 2) they help me stay focused on the theme of the story, thus helping with consistency and tone. You could say that I use each chapter title as a main thesis statement, or a heading, and each of the plot points underneath that as subheadings. This provides my work with a skeleton.
I also apply TV and play script-writing techniques: I identify my A, B, and C plots, and I go through and make sure that the characters who will support these plots are fully-fleshed out before beginning the story. I don't use specific screenwriting or other kinds of tools to help me manage this information because I often find that I get lost in learning or using these fancy-schmancy tools rather than focusing on the writing. Good ol' Google Docs is my go-to. If I take notes in notebooks or using apps, I always bring them into comments in the Google Doc for the fic. Centralizing everything in one, broad, flexible platform helps me move these little ideas and fragments around into the right places as I write the fic, and it helps me from forgetting anything.
Multiple fics: When it comes to juggling multiple fics, I find that having this set structure to start cuts down on planning time. I can simply copy and paste my template and start getting my ideas on the page. This also helps me jump from fic to fic; the worlds are built out and the structure is set, so I don’t have a huge cognitive load to deal with when context switching -- i.e., moving from one work to another feels easier. I simply save all my fics in a folder on Google Drive and jump around as my muse directs.
Tumblr media
Execution
Many of you have generously said that I am prolific, which, wow, high praise, and I'll gladly take it, thanks! Your questions have also helped me reflect on my process, as well as try to dig into what you we might mean by “prolific”, “consistent”, “organized”, etc. The things I’ve mentioned above are related to the upfront work. Here are some notes on the actual writing. I’ve shared thoughts on this before, but here’s what I think has helped me get my stories out of my brain and into yours:
Playing a musical instrument has, I think, cemented a strong and particular type of expressive connection between my brain and my hands, helping me not only type quickly but also cut down the amount of time it takes for me to translate ideas into words (I wanna do a cognitive study of this too, wish I still had an attachment to my labs).
Using keyboard shortcuts also helps! Honestly, typing feels like playing the piano to me.
Front-loading the brainwork in planning and organizing (i.e., what I talked about above) according to a set structure that is easy to templatize helps me chunk and manage tons of information and multiple storylines (see links to another post and my carrd below for more details).
Slipping into something more comfortable, lol, literally! I was talking with the fantastic Shenee from Grown Ass Fandom about this. I like setting the mood for myself. Minimal distractions. Music and lighting to vibe to and, frankly, eventually ignore. The perfect snackies (hot cocoa is a fave). Most of all, oodles and oodles of time. If I’m going to write an angry scene, I make myself a little uncomfortable or listen to something irritable. If I’m going to write a sexy scene, I wear something that turns me on. Sometimes, I put on a full face, like I’m getting ready to see whoever I’m writing about. Costumes help!
Editing in parallel has helped me a ton! It took me years to develop this skill, but because I weirdly enjoyed learning about US English composition and APA style to what some would say a disturbing amount, I’ve internalized many basic writing conventions, which helps cut down time spent on the editing process. For better or worse, I also happen not to work with beta readers, though I am enjoying the feel of opening up my process to others through projects like AMOMK!
Writing literally all! the! time! Lots and lots of writing! It’s all I do! To the point where, in my deepest writing grooves, I won’t say a word to another human all day! I’ve been writing as a hobby since I was a kid. My research background also helps, in that I am accustomed to researching in parallel, too. My time in grad school was full of writing and editing case conceptualizations, as well as writing and editing academic papers based on my experiment data, on top of teaching classes and editing students’ papers, while also working on a thesis, and then a whole-ass dissertation. Throughout that time, I was also writing grants for lab funding. And, my early user experience research job required me to churn out research reports quickly and thoroughly (like I’m talking a weekly basis) in a way that tells an overarching, easy-to-follow narrative. It isn’t all fiction, but I write a LOT. Practice really is the best learning tool. Remember: writing anything will help with anything you write!
If you're interested in a deeper breakdown of my writing, check out this post, or my carrd! I made some fun little infographics about my process. I’m always super interested in chatting about writing, so let me know what other writing questions you have!

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Chimerical
Chimerical’s stories aren’t at Gossamer, but you can now find them at AO3. If you have not read them, are you in for a treat! For instance, Regular People and Regular People Still are some of the X-Files fics I have read and re-read. You may also know Chimerical from her site Chimerical Publications, which was an extensive Mulder and David Duchovny fansite. Big thanks to Chimerical for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
I’m not surprised at all that X-Files fandom is still popular, it was an amazing, creative show with iconic characters. Aside from just being entertaining, like all good Sci-Fi it asked deep, profound questions about the nature of relationships and humanity. It’s these things that people remember more than the MOWs.
However, I’m surprised to hear that my stories are still read, mostly because there is always something new, someone has a new take, and of course, we have the more recent episodes which provides all new fodder for writers, which is wonderful. But it’s super nice to hear that stories from the classic show still mean something. Also, I wasn’t a prolific writer, there are only 12 stories, but perhaps they struck a chord and people like to revisit them the way you like to re-watch a favorite episode or movie.
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
Fanfic is certainly not new, but The X-Files was absolutely at the right place, at the right time. The internet was just really taking off, and it enabled fans to connect instantly in ways that hadn’t before. I remember that Fox used to send out Cease & Desist letters in an ill-considered attempt to stem fanfic because the Suits just didn’t understand what it was. Nowadays, of course, they embrace much of it, encourage it, even. Supernatural wrote whole episodes about it. But in the early days they were really stupid about it.
But what I took away from it was that great community can exist with people you have never met in person. There is a great sharing of ideas and love of great characters.
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
It’s true, no Facebook, twitter, tiktok – it seems strange!
But I connected to fandom though the old Usenet message boards, you couldn’t wait until the episode was over until you could leap on and start discussing the episode. And it was painful if you were on the west coast as I was because you would get spoiled. In truth, it wasn’t must different than Twitter, just without the character limitation. But it was rather the wild, wild, west, no moderators and no terms of service. It could be a free-for-all, and some of the disagreements were legendary! For writing, certainly ATXC was the big dog for fic, and of course alt.tv.x-files for discussion. There were many different Yahoo Groups and AOL mailing lists, that catered to interests in fanfic (Friendship/Adult/Slash) or to the characters and/or actors.
But frankly, the main thing I remember was what a complete PITA it was to just get anything posted. There were all these size limitations and ASCII issues that don’t exist today, you had font and formatting limitations, which cause people to get weirdly creative with italics, bolding, quotes and so on. And you had to break your story up in weird way simply to jam it into the email because there were size limitations. And it never failed that no matter how many Beta Reads you had, you didn’t see that last damn typo until AFTER you hit the send button. There was no edit button, all you could do resend the whole damn thing. It was the fanfic version of the 20 mile walk to school through the snow……Kids today have it so easy!  LOL….
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
Actors are, and always will be, the face of the show. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are amazing actors, and the nuance they brought each week was a wonder.
But one of the things that the X-Files also did was make people aware of the people behind the scenes, the showrunners, the writers, the directors. This was also something new. For most TV dramas, most people couldn’t tell you who wrote an episode if you had a gun to their head.
But people knew the writers like Vince Gilligan, James Wong, Darin Morgan, and of course Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz. And they knew the directors, Rob, Chris and the late great, Kim Manners.. It was like a repertory company. You could count on Morgan & Wong for the creepy, you could count of Vince Gilligan for the humor and relationship stuff, you could count on Darin Morgan for the “what the hell was that, but I loved it.”
So I guess what I took away was a deep appreciation for the craft, for the work. This carried over to other fandoms. I’m more aware of the creative team beyond the actors.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
Believe it not, I didn’t watch at the beginning. I’ve always been a Sci-Fi fan but for some reason this wasn’t on my radar. I came in about the middle of Season 1. I was channel surfing and stopped the X-Files, it was the episode “Ice.”  I won’t lie, I stopped because I saw David Duchovny in a henley and I’m never one to pass by an attractive man. But as I watched, I became intrigued by these two characters, and their conflicted relationship with each other, even though I didn’t really know what was really going on. But I had to know more. That’s good writing, where you can walk in half-way through an episode and be captured.
I immediately checked out the old AOL Service forums and found a group. Of course, back then, there was no streaming, there was no BitTorrent. So, you just had to wait until when and if the network decided to show a repeat, which meant you were screwed if you were trying to catch up. But someone on one of the boards offered to send me VHS tapes of the episodes of missed. That’s fandom as its best - I’m excited about this and I want to share it with you. So in about a week I was caught up and hooked. I had to see how these two people’s story turned out.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
I’ve always written as a hobby, taken many writing classes, have always written short stories, worked on a novel or two. I’ve got friends who are writers by profession. But the closest I ever came to doing it professionally was co-writing a play that ran for a month off Broadway many years ago, so I’m a dabbler, at best. I’m a big reader, and good stories always make me think, “well, what if this happened….”
So, X-Files wasn’t my first fanfic rodeo. I had been involved in Quantum Leap fandom and Beauty and the Beast, some Star Trek. Once I good hooked on the show, I immediately began searching out fanfic. But it took me a long time before I wrote anything. I’m not sure why, perhaps I was waiting to see where the story went. But X-Files was different in that it blended one of my favorite genres with a truly compelling relationship story. And I don’t just mean romance, it was a melding of two entirely different ways of looking at the world that was captivating. Scully was so strong and Mulder so complex, how could you not love them.
So, I enjoy writing, I learn from it. I learn from the feedback, both good and bad. I’ve never understood fanfic writers who say “just sent me nice feedback.”  No one loves criticism, and not all criticism is valid. But you learn from it. I’ve had people tell me they hadn’t looked at an episode from that point of view and they like it - and I’ve had people tell me that I didn’t know what I was doing, everyone knew that Scully would never cuss (to which I say, please, she grew up on military bases!)  But it helps you improve.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
It was a period of my life I cherish because I met some friends who are still my friends to this day, all these years later because we found other things in common besides a show. It was great to share ideas and debate storylines. And it was a fun, creative, and exciting time. Each episode was must-see and then talking to my friends about it later was the best part.
I started to drift away when David Duchovny left the show. I thought then, and still think, they should have called it a day because the beating heart of that show was Mulder and Scully together. You can’t rip out half the heart and expect the patient to live. On an intellectual level, I got why Duchovny left, I got why Anderson stayed and I got that Fox was a fledging network back then and XF was a cash cow. But on an emotional level, it all turned upside down, especially when the much-promised “search for Mulder” never really happened.
Fans got angry. They were angry at David for leaving, they were angry at Gillian for staying, and they were angry at poor Robert Patrick, perfectly decent person, for merely existing. It got ugly and I got up caught up in that. Frankly, I was as much to blame as anyone in carrying on stupid arguments about crap that didn’t matter. And one day I just realized I’d let all the joy be sucked away, and this just wasn’t who I wanted to be, or how I wanted to spend my time. So, I took a break, I still watched the show as it limped on, but I disconnected from the fandom part of it. And by the time I’d had my break, the show was done!
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
I’m always a fan. There are many shows I’ve followed and liked, Supernatural, Fringe, Walking Dead, but I don’t get involved in the internet drama. So, I don’t get as invested.
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
I assume you mean besides Mulder and Scully!  In literature, My favorite writer is John Steinbeck and every character he created was indelible and singular. East of Eden is my favorite book and the characters of Adam & Caleb Trask, as well as Cathy Ames are so well drawn.  Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, they’re all perfect.  Another favorite book and character is Alexandre’s Demas, The Count of Monte Cristo.  The arc that Edmond Dantès’ life take is quite Mulder-esque.  And of course, Harry Potter, I’m a sucker for a character fighting against overwhelming odds.
On TV, Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap.  That was an amazingly well-crafted series, also featuring a female show runner, Deborah Pratt.  I love the character of Raymond Reddington on The Blacklist, there is something about a completely unapologetic bad guy. I would have once said Dean and Sam Winchester, but sadly that turned into a case of staying too long at the fair and I stopped watching a couple seasons ago - But the early seasons rocked. Literally every single character in M*A*S*H was golden, and they knew when to call it quits. Thomas Magnum from the original Magnum PI. (People my age will still remember the “Did you see the Sun Rise, Ivan” episode!)
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
Oddly enough, a few weeks before you reached out to me, I watched the X-Files movie again. I remembered the incredible excitement when it came out. Fox did this tour across the county; it was like a mini-con. But I remember they had the trailer on a loop and my friends and I sat through it so many times we could recite the entire thing by heart. TV shows, such as Star Trek, had made the leap to movie, but I don’t believe a TV show had ever made the leap to films while the show was still on TV. But damn, it was good.
I watched the two recent XF mini-series. They did much to revive the old feeling, especially the episodes by Darin Morgan, who is a national treasure. And it was wonderful to see David, Gillian and Mitch. I’m sorry there won’t be more.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
I haven’t in quite a while. Mostly because real life has interfered (work, personal stuff, Covid) over this last year and I have trouble concentrating. But I would certainly return to it, you need the escape of a good story.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
Oh yes! But they were all from the time I was writing. Lydia Bower, DashaK, BlueSwirl, XFBandit, Paula Graves, Taverl, Prufrock’s Love, and dozens of other are still on my PC.
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
Like children, they each have their virtues but some may be harder to love than others. While I love a good smutty MSR, I was also a big fan of conflict resolution. So, I’m going to cheat and split the baby here. Based on feedback, I’d have to day my most popular story was Regular People and its sequel. And I really enjoyed writing that. It’s simple, it’s sweet, it’s what I hope for Mulder and Scully. The chance to just BE, if only for a while.
I wanted to try a slash story, so Wind River. That story was inspired by the murder of Matthew Shepard. I have dear friends in the gay community and I was so angry that this could happen in this country, so that one was about the need to treat people compassionately and who better to do that than Mulder and Scully.
But in truth, my own favorite is one that didn’t get much attention, called Rock Bottom. I wanted to explore that the fact Mulder and Scully, were, on occasion, just truly awful to each other and yet still reason to come back together.
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
I have a couple unfinished stories. There’s one from Quantum Leap, I want to finish first and when that’s done, I would like to finish the two X-Files that are half-baked.
Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
I do legal writing as a profession now, so I write all day long, but analyzing a case or a legal matter is not the same creatively and I do miss that, so I see returning someday, you need to feed your soul.
Where do you get ideas for stories?
Well that’s all over the place, much like my mind! Often I was inspired by something I thought was unaddressed in the episodes. That’s where the Just One series came from. Or it’s a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern kind of thing -- That is, what’s happening off screen while the main action is going on. I find that intriguing, and that’s where Risking Everything came from. The incident in By Coincidence actually happened to a friend of a friend and I thought it would make good fodder. Pentimento came to me following a lecture I attended at a gallery, what happens when you peel back the layers you thought were true. You never know what’s going to connect.
What's the story behind your pen name?
“Chimerical” means existing  as the product of unchecked imagination, given to unrealistic flights of fantasy- which seemed right for a fiction writer, especially for XF. In the early days, it became the phonetic “KiMeriKal” when I was on the old AOL service simply because Chimerical wasn’t available as a screen name! But I’m finally [email protected]!
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
Yes, my friends are aware, some of them have been my betas over the years. My brother knows I write, but I don’t think he’s ever read anything because he would find the smut elements uncomfortable coming from his little sister!
Is there a place online (Tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
The most recent versions of my stories are at AO3. If I ever get around to anything new it will be posted there as well.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
Thanks for reading, thanks for remembering me, and it was a great time in my life. Fandoms are great communities as long as we can always remember there’s a human being at the other end of the keyboard.  Be kind, be compassionate, and never stop imagining the possibilities.

how’d u get into writing? like, writing fic and being part of the silm community, being Known, that stuff? i’m really new to being a silm cc and i’d love to know ur advice! also: how’d u build up the confidence to start posting meta/hcs? bc i have a Lot of hcs and meta ideas but also i’m really anxious abt posting them bc yknow anxiety is like that
these are some great questions, anon! I’m gonna go through them one by one :)
how’d u get into writing?
not to be like, super cliche, but I’ve...kind of always been a writer? as long as I can remember I’ve been telling stories, and when I was too young to read or write I would dictate them to my mom, who would type them up for me and help me choose clipart illustrations to accompany them. when I got old enough I would always be writing; I attempted my first novel at age 9, and while that never really went anywhere I did finish the darn thing and it had some pretty sophisticated plot twists for a 9-year-old!
like, writing fic
around the same time I got into fandom! I was deep into Warrior cats (like. really deep) and I believe I started writing my first fics when I was like? 10 or 11? my memory is kind of fuzzy on the order of things, but I know I got an account on the Warriors forums when I was 9, and that I was already posting my fic there when I made my FFN account. I believe I was 12 when that happened, but who knows. I haven’t the faintest idea of what happened with those forums, but uhhh pretty much all of my Warriors fic is still up on FFN lmao. you could probably find that if you want to but um...maybe don’t?
my first Big Fic was a self-insert of...my entire 5th/6th grade class into the then-current timeline of the Warriors books...well. I honestly think that might still be my most popular fic of all time l m a o though I try not to think about it because Hashtag Cringe. though as much as I look back on that time with a “yikes,” I am very grateful for the Warriors fandom in a way? that place was so accepting and encouraging of OCs, of AUs, of completely disregarding canon, of worldbuilding that is completely alien from canon - it was a fantastic sandbox to begin with, there were so many ways to write stories and practically all of them were accepted and had fellow fans invested in them!
and being part of the silm community,
soooo I wrote Warriors fic until my freshman year of high school (wow sdjfhkdsjfh), which was when BOTFA came out, and I was absolutely wrecked by the ending and immediately started writing my own fixit fic. I was also super hooked on Kiliel! so that was my intro to the Tolkien fandom; and simultaneously, I joined tumblr, and, well, the rest is history tbh.
I honestly do not remember when I first read the Silm, but I kind of got into the more obscure parts of the Tolkien fandom through fandom osmosis, and I do have a vague memory of doodling the Finwean family tree in geometry class so it might have been later on in freshman year? that was also the same time I was having my Queer Awakening, and Russingon definitely contributed to me unlearning my internalized queerphobia, so probably around then.
anyway - queer awakening, tumblr, Tolkien, transitioning from FFN to AO3 - all of that was happening around the same time. I know I dipped my toes in the Silm fandom then, but I was still primarily a Hobbit fic writer focusing on Kiliel. toward the end of high school I kind of shifted to LOTR and (qp) Gigolas...but somehow the Silm fandom is the most active of the Big Three within the Tolkien fandom, and I was getting dragged further and further in.
it wasn’t until @backtomiddleearthmonth 2019, my freshman year of college, that I really dove into writing Silm fic! I picked some Silm-specific bingo cards and never looked back :D that was really not all that long ago but I am obsessed in a way I don’t really remember being even with TH/LOTR, I obviously cannot see the future but I anticipate hanging out here for a long time. the Silm fandom is great overall and there’s just so much material to work with!! <3
being Known, that stuff?
so I don’t really have a whole lot of context on how “well known” I am in the fandom?? definitely within the past year and a half or so I’ve noticed that I like, get asks like this, and get a significant amount of notes on my posts, and I’ve made a lot of fandom friends especially since I joined some Silm servers on Discord (hmu if you want invites; I’m on the SWG server and 2 general Silm servers and the Russingon server) this past year. and I have 3,000 followers as of this month - and while ever since I hit 1k I don’t particularly pay attention to my follower count I can definitely say that I have more engagement now than I used to! but it took me a long time to build this “audience,” I suppose; I’ve been around the Tolkien fandom since late 2014, so nearly 6 years of this, lol.
really the best way to build a following, in my experience, is to just post a lot of stuff. when I started making edits I got a lot more engagement, because for a long time I would post one every day! (I made them in batches and queued them; I didn’t actually make one every day lol...and now I’m too busy to do that, so I just make edits for events and whenever I feel like it) And I have [checks ao3] 145 works in the Silm fandom as of today - I’m fairly prolific! I’ve come to generally expect 3-10 comments on most of my oneshots, which is a lot more than I used to have back in the day. consistency and quantity are more likely to attract people to your work - and quality, of course.
also: how’d u build up the confidence to start posting meta/hcs?
I’ve been writing since I was very young, and I’ve been writing fic for like...11 years? I think? in that time I’ve produced a lot of garbage, but imo most of that was in my Warrior cats phase, so I came into the Tolkien fandom with confidence in myself and my writing. I’m also working on original fiction on the side (I hope to eventually become a published fantasy author, but right now school takes up most of my time that I don’t devote to fandom, which gives me more immediate gratification and also is just Very Fun) and I know I’m a good writer.
basically, I’ve been doing this for like...half my life, and I’m still fairly young, so I’ve had time to build up my skill and confidence and I know I’m only going to get better with time. you will get better with practice. like I said, I’ve written a lot of terrible stuff, and it’s only through sucking for a long time that I’ve gotten to the point I am now. and I am far from perfect; I know I still have lots of room to grow!
for meta and headcanons specifically, I started with writing fic, and then when I didn’t think I could stretch something into an entire fic I would just make a hc post. I have a vivid memory of writing my first meta in a notebook during driver’s ed because it was so goddamn boring and I had Thoughts about Tauriel and Thranduil!
in my experience, meta comes from having Opinions and wanting to share them and most importantly to back them up - you need to have sources! you need to have reasons! you need to have justification! otherwise it’s not meta, it’s a headcanon or an AU. which is fine!! I love hc/AU!!! but they are not the same as meta, and I’m a stickler for being accurate when it comes to meta. if you have sources and shit to back you up, that will help you build the confidence to share your meta.
sharing disinformation and passing it off as meta instead of just coming out and saying this is a headcanon/baseless theory/AU or whatever is such a fandom pet peeve of mine; it’s not bad for something to not be Accurate! you just have to have that disclaimer - and even when you’re writing meta, you’re offering an interpretation of the text, and you need to acknowledge that other interpretations also exist and are valid.
um. I hope this answers your questions? and sorry for basically word-vomiting my entire life story, lol. this post got long; the main reason I’ve written so much fic is because I really just cannot shut up for the life of me. sooo if you can tear of that filter of being shy and just. say shit. you can go so far~!
OH and one more thing - I can’t believe I almost forgot this - but part of being a writer is participating in the community. this is code for LEAVE A DAMN COMMENT IF YOU LIKE A FIC. that’s how I made most of my fandom friends before Discord! I follow @ao3feed-silmarillion and stalk that blog for new Silm fics; I read the ones that interest me and comment on them.
I know this is not really the most common way for folks to find fic but it’s so rewarding to interact with new fic, new writers, new commentors, new stories - you can find gems that don’t rise to the top of the kudos/bookmark lists; you become friends with your fellow writers; you can watch people grow and change; you support smaller content creators. yeah, you might not be getting Just The Best Stuff, but it’s so so so worth it!!
and if you make friends in the comment section of other people’s fic - I guarantee you some of them will go to your AO3 profile and check out your fic, too! and they’ll leave comments! this is a fic community, and that’s what I cherish about fandom most of all, tbh.
anyway - again - sorry for rambling so much, but I hoped this helped! feel free to send in another ask, or to come talk to me off anon if you’d like! and definitely send me your stuff if/when you decide to share it; I would love to support you!!! <3

thank u!!! <3 <3 <3 under the cut, i didn’t realize how long this one got lmao
Which OCs names do you like the most?
my cousin gave me chance treize (lucky thirteen in french, at least translated literally, idk if it’s actually in use as a phrase in french-speaking areas) when we were like 13 for a whole different character so i can’t take full credit but it’s still one of my favs! actually the names in deep six are all really good. names on point even if nothing else is
a protag in one of my stories i’ve never written to my satisfaction is named dara iliad, and her co-protag’s name is beacán jayne, and i love both of their names. same with song okent and bats “poison” mally. the most recent character to get a name is my DADSASSINATION protagonist, hazel/haze faye, which is directly thieved from flannery o’connor to add legitimate southern gothic flavor to the florida-inspired high fantasy setting, and i’m pretty fond of that
If your wip had a fandom what would you want it to be like? (some examples: size, audience, content, etc)
one of my favorite fic writers recently commented that if their original fiction doesn’t end up with some weird shit on ao3 then there’s no point to anything and i have to agree! my delusions of grandeur and need for external validation want a massive following who are as prolific as they are weird. then i remember that prolific and weird fandoms are generally the crazy ones. then i remember that life is short and i’m easily bored, so maybe a small but still batshit funky following i can depend on to be challenging but never toxic
List five positive things that you like about yourself as a writer.
i have really good names!
if i have a goal in mind, i have trained myself to get the work done. doing nano three times a year for almost a decade will do that for you
i care a lot about the characters i write and i think that translates pretty well to page without being too obnoxious
at my best, i think i balance big emotions and drama with a more stripped-down, straightforward writing style so it’s neither dry nor flowery and overwrought
uuuuuuuuuuuuuhh i have no idea. sometimes i really like my setting descriptions!!
Why do you love writing? Don’t hold back.
god i haven’t felt like i loved writing in so long, it’s just been a source of shame and embarrassment and failure since last year, but i guess at the root it’s what i love about reading, in that it’s both an escape and a reminder? describing stories i love as “escapist” is true but not the end of the definition - what stories i love, i love because they invite me back to the world after i’m done reading, they remind me why it’s worth sticking around. fiction is the epitome of the “the little things matter the most” philosophy because there’s nothing to stories about, like, superheroes, or four sisters vacationing with their dad and their dog, or a wizard and his daughter on an island, or a villain teaming up with a shapeshifter, or a boy with green eyes who doesn’t sleep, or [waves hands] anyway, nothing about those stories has any real bearing on my life, they’re fictional, they’re not real, especially for someone who primarily reads speculative - one of my college friends told me, an english major, to my face, that shakespeare doesn’t save anyone so why should he matter, and i probably internalized that more than i knew i should have. but when i close the cover on a book i loved or that touched me in some way then i feel more equipped to be alive, even just being in those pages for a few hours was a few hours where i was Okay, and it’s like... i don’t know what engaging with stories will be like if i ever get healthy in my head but i doubt they’ll ever stop being a lifeline to me
and that’s what i love about writing, is the chance and the opportunity to make a lifeline for someone else
